Respectfully, I think everyone and their mother deserves to experience the ups and downs, the rainbows and angst that is Love All Play

I absolutely loved LOVE ALL PLAY. I enjoyed everything including the angst. It was the last drama I finished in 2023 which ended the year with a big smile on my face

I agree best male lead in K drama that year. Longest and sweetest waiting in the wings side character love story. Best dad’s showing off their love for/control over future son in laws.🥰

That's a great recommendation! One of my all-time favorite MLs (but also one of my least favorite FLs...) There are definitely some similarities in tone.

More downs and angst and overall frustration with Love All Play. I felt so sorry for the ML during the whole drama... But the second couple was super cute!

I don't want to binge Lovely Runner again so soon. Even our favorite cakes, cookies and brownies need to be cooled off straight out of the oven. 😂

Those who havent should immediately jump into "Extraordinary you", its a gem of a drama and Kim Hye-yoon is fantastic there as well.

I quite liked A Time Called You; its main problem is just that it's not Someday or One Day. I thought it was easier to follow and the lower episode count made the story tighter, although it doesn't have the emotional impact of SOOD. I'm in a tiny minority in thinking Alice Ke was miscast in the original, and Jeon Yeo-been is more convincing to me in the high school and college timelines that make up the majority of the run time.
Ahn Hyo-seop’s biggest shortcoming is simply not being Greg Hsu, who was magic in SOOD. He’s fine, but lacks that effervescent charm and the ability to be convincing in all timelines and in both his delight and his grief.

You won't go wrong with either version, anyway, and either would be a good follow-up to Lovely Runner.

Well I, for one, will be browsing Byun Woo Seok's images online until I find a perfect reference photo for my practicing drawing portraits. Because I like my references gorgeous.
Also, I just found out via You Tube that BWS and I apparently share the obsessive fear of catching a cold, which is why we both carry around propolis to quickly consume it if we sense even a faintest sign of sore throat, lol. So I think that we can all agree that the boy and me are soulmates. Just sayin'

It’s kinda of funny how I randomly watched this film called GREATEST HITS with my friends today. It reminded me a lot of LOVELY RUNNER and a little bit of ATYPICAL FAMILY. Time travelling back to a loved one and trying to prevent their death. I will say I didn’t feel any chemistry between the FL Harriet and her dead boyfriend, I didn’t even feel they loved each other. However, I absolutely adored her new romantic interest David in her present life. It’s kinda like if Sun-jae was meh, uninteresting and had zero personality so instead Sol ended up with Tae-sung 😁

You know what else is funny? In RECORD OF YOUTH Park Bo-gum’s character chooses to enlist in the military just when his career is on a high and Byun Woo-seok’s character tells him that’s a stupid idea, he will no longer be able to play a young character when he hits the age of thirty…

Oh the irony, Byun Woo-seok’s career highlight is him playing a high-school student in his thirties 😂

Lovely Runner did too great of a job at reviving the time travel sub-genre (after it was used to the point of saturation in the last few years) that I couldn't watch or read another time travel story after it finished its run. Not to mention the sprinkle of time-loop element in the story that hit my soft spot, combined with the loveliest and deadliest chemistry I've witnessed in the recent years (no wonder people wouldn't stop speculating about the 2 leads dating in real life).

And so, I found myself turning to a completely unrelated genre to fill that huge void. Thank goodness the 2nd season of c-drama Joy of Life aired at that exact time. Nothing could be further from epic time-travel romance than palace intrigue and power struggle, after all.

Though I foresee that I'm going to go on a rewatch spree soon. The Seol-Sunjae magic is still going on strong, everyone...

Saaaame. I’m only 4.5 episodes into LR, but I’m already planning which crime thriller/murder mystery/action drama I’m going to chase it with. I like something totally different as a palate cleanser before I try to watch something in the same genre - especially if the drama is really excellent.

I’m not sure yet! I have a whole list of “classics” that I want to watch eventually, but I also like your idea of watching something I know isn’t as good - to reset expectations but also so that it doesn’t compete. Maybe I’ll take a deep dive into the vaults and pull out something campy and a little ridiculous, or maybe something just a tad scary? I’m also watching Uncle Samshik with my partner right now, which is a whole separate vibe too - I almost want something pretty cheesy to balance it all out!

2

For the time travel element that serves to prevent the circumstances that caused the travel, I'll unashamedly suggest Perfect Marriage Revenge.
And maybe a touch of Durian's Affair and The Story of Park's Marriage Contract.

For the fluff...
Business Proposal, Crazy Love, Queen In-hyun's Man.

I'm going to do a few things to get through Lovely Runner withdrawals! I'm going to get my mom to watch ASAP so I can enjoy the first-watch experience vicariously through her. I'm definitely going to do a rewatch, too, just not sure when. After I've watched something really really good, I like to watch something mediocre next, because it helps me to reset my expectations, so I'm watching Dare to Love Me. I also like to switch between genres to reset, so I'm finishing Mr. Queen and My Perfect Stranger. I've also saved all the BTS footage, Byeon Woo-seok's Running Man episode, and Hye-yoon and Woo-seok's interview on comedian Jang Do-youn's Salon Drip talk show to watch. 3

Thanks for deleting the comment and please don’t worry about it, we have all done something without thinking it through. I was pulled up for something similar when I was first on the site as it was an old drama and I was trying to reassure beanies worried about the ickiness of teacher/student relationship I didn’t think about phrasing hence my noticing when others have a similar dilemma. I have seen veteran beanies do the equivalent of spoiling that classic film The sixth sense so it’s not just a rookie error🥰

I just finished a rewatch. 😳 My daughter started LR on Tuesday and wanted viewing company. 😅 It was fun picking up on more of the “echoes through time” moments, like how Sun-jae and Tae-sung had drinking contests with soda, tea and soju. Or how In-Hyuk being on flower petal duty meant a confession/proposal would fail. She got frustrated when Sun-jae kept dying but loved the show overall and will be consulting all your what-to-watch-next recommendations. The school years resonated most with her — leading to her one critique, which applies most to Tae-sung’s arc: “I wish the whole crew from high school still had their memories of the beach trip and other moments 😡”

Required fields are marked *

It looks like the style Sol had in the video for Tae-Sung was the original style KHY's team came with. They reshot some scenes with a new style for her. They released original pictures from the photobooth and she wasn't looking great with poorly cut bangs.

2

Styling a star differently is done all the time. It happened with Park Seo Joon in Hwarang, to a point where they just gave up I think (I think he was getting overshadowed by PHS and they probably wanted to give a different style to make him come across like the ML and failed miserably). But you would never ever hear the director say something so egregiously chauvinistic about Seo Joon. K-dramas go out of the way to present their FLs as someone with stunted emotional growth with a style to match (Behind Your Touch was probably the worst offender), and yet here we are. This is sad to read.

6

@Kurama I think it would have been refreshing if Sun-jae had fallen in love at first sight with "ugly" 19-year-old Sol as it would mean that he didn't fall for her beauty but her heart from sharing her umbrella with "ajusshi" to giving him candies.

Basically, like Su-ho in True Beauty.

3

@panshel I don't think it would have changed the story. He fell in love with her bubbly energy and smile.

2

@panshel: She was even adorable in that hilarious video. She is beautiful and sparkles on screen. That creep of a PD had an agenda. He clearly wanted to belittle her publicly- a no no if you’re a competent professional and have any decency - anc make her seem beholden to him. What a deplorable asshole.

1

I didn't have a chance to miss "Lovely Runner" because I joined the community watch for "See You In My Nineteenth Life", and I had a sensory overload with the fine moments and nuanced sensitivities that coloured every frame of that drama. Its textured narrative at the core filled with exquisite dialogues and Shin Hye Sun's evocative eyes didn't much room to think of anything else. So while I loved BSW and KHY, I hope both get a chance to act in something more substantial.

Right now, I have made a dive into Fairy Tale (it's whacky and is creeping up on me), Joseon X Files (it's so so good) and started Nokdu Flower (I got confused between Tale of Nokdu and Nokdu flower, only recently realising they are different dramas). I wanted to watch JJS in another historical and this is going to be my first Yoon Shi Yoon drama so excited. It's giving Mr Sunshine vibes without the gloss, so let's see.

We are going in for another community watch soon - Soundtrack #1, followed by Just Between Lovers, Happiness and Bossam. If you want to join us, just tag me, or @Claire2009 (Claire) or @seeker (Cera).

Mr Sunshine is layered and beautiful. The romance wasn't the best, but then it wasn't the point anyway (again, K-drama, had an ending it didn't need to have.) Knowing how you love cinematography, I can't wait to hear your take on it. It's dazzling to my eyes. I remember frames and shots despite them not important plot wise. The cinematographer even made linens fluttering in the air hanging on clothesline dramatic (I know they can be made to look beautiful, but this was something extra). What I loved about it is that each character, however insignificant, had a story to tell. I had issues with its pacing but overall I highly recommend it.

Required fields are marked *

I think it's has the best visuals of all that I have seen. My Dearest comes close. What's amazing about it is that even though there is a lot of gloss and shine, it still manages to convey the rustic and raw undertones.

4

To add, the closest I can think of, that has been permanently imprinted in my mind from outside of Mr Sunshine, was the brown overlays of the scene where NKM comes upon Ahn Eun Jin in the slave market getting bidded upon. It was searingly beautiful, and communicated the pathos so evocatively that it lingered so long after the scene was over.

4

Isa, I loved so much about “Mr Sunshine” too. As Minnie said, the romance didn’t work for me as well given the huge age difference and just not vibing together but everything else was phenomenal. It is moving, funny in parts amidst the tragedies unfolding and importantly engages profoundly with how the non-noble classes suffered and how valiantly they resisted both the colonisation and their own dehumanisation at the hands of the so-called noble class.

5

This is my JJS's second show. After Captivating The King, it's interesting to see him here. The man can speak with his eyes.

I didn't realise how insanely good looking Yoo Shi Yoon is. He reminds me a bit of young Zo In Sung (who I watched in a very old drama that that I dropped in the early episodes because the FL was being treated like a bag of poop and I could not relate to any of them). And a good actor too. I am seated.

if the going between past and future is what gets you, I can't recommend better than the OG, Answer Me 1997 - it has the fangirl heroine, the music, the adorable high school parts, the chemistry (!!) and the catching up as adults <3, only there the past is, well, 1997 and the present is 2012 - just four years after LR's high school timeline!

also ever since that edit of Kim Hye-yoon and Byun Woo-seok's sageuk scenes from their earlier dramas into a four minute 'remake' of it, I would recommend watching the original Goong (2006, also known as Princess Hours). It's a Hallyu legend for good reason despite the occasional frustration/lagging bits, the chemistry was 10/10 and the costumes and sets remain to die for to this day, I've never seen anything quite like it.

if you want the cinnamon-roll hero (I prefer my drama male leads to not have jerk personalities), The Tale of Nokdu is a good bet.

also if anyone was really into Eclipse and would like a drama that focuses more on the band, Shut Up Flower Boy Band (2012) is a perennial rec - the OST is one of the best I've ever heard in a kdrama, though more rock-focused than LR's Eclipse.

For a drama with a young star who was isolated and burnt out similarly to Sun-jae at the start of the drama, Producers might be an unorthodox rec and is VERY different from LR in every way from structure to tone (no real rules on who is a second lead) but I loved the behind-the-scenes look at variety shows and IU made a fangirl out of me with this one.

(lol it was only a month ago I was trying to fill the Queen of Tears void and found Lovely Runner was the only current drama that did it, now I am bereft of anything to watch)

P.S. I tried Moonshine over the weekend with a finger firmly on the fast-forward button so that the bulk of what I watched were BWS's scenes, I would recommend this method of watching as the drama/central romance is something of a bore but BWS held up his end as the rule-breaking Crown Prince quite nicely.

In the days after the final episode, I did rewatch the final 2 episodes multiple times.

During the weekend, I missed seeing such a cute couple, so did a quick speed rewatch (skip all scenes with the bad guys and the palace people) of 100 Days My Prince while I was lying down and recovering from over-exercising. It felt like the drama and the couple mainly worked because of Nam Ji-hyun and Do Kyung-soo's pairing. They're just so cute! And I'm not sure if either actor will be in a rom-com anytime soon.

If your heart thrills at the whole love and waiting part, I want to throw in Mystic Pop-Up Bar as a suggestion for those who haven't watched it yet. It's got a found family thing going on too.

Going opposite end of the spectrum with Connection with Ji Sung and Mido. But not just them, but a whole cast of standout talent. IT IS RIVETING!

Continuing Atypical family which I find quirky enough to keep me engaged and I just really like Jang Ki Yong’s voice. I find it absolutely soothing. He could read the phone book (yeah, I’m that old) and I’d listen to it on repeat.

But I’m now scouring social media for interview crumbs with BWS doing press junkets these last few days. His interviews are so sincere and I’m learning a lot about him and about how in love he was with Sunjae, like all of us. He’s planning to binge watch the show again before going off to his fan meets next month. It sounds like he can rest for a couple weeks at least. I’ve also watched him on Hyeri’s YouTube show. I really ship them. I also ship her with Jang Kiyong. It’d be a real life love triangle. I don’t know if it can happen because of how they all know each other, but she’s single now and they are as well (from what I can tell). I might be writing a fanfic in my head right now. 😂

Maybe before anything else grabs our fleeting attention, we can all hope that the awful and sexist PD from Lovely Runner has a comeuppance and at the very least, apologises to KMY for his hateful and derogatory comments. As a dude, BWS will do just fine unless he stuffs up by the prevailing standards. I’m much more interested and concerned about KHY having to navigate the misogynistic KD waters. May she go from strength to strength and endure.
