Ex-mobster Uhm Tae-gu is a fool for love and Han Sun-hwa

More promos have arrived for JTBC’s upcoming My Sweet Mobster, with second lead Kwon Yul (Longing for You) joining Han Sun-hwa’s (Work Later, Drink Now 2) pink party in the new group poster, while the character teaser focuses on our charismatic-but-bumbling hero Uhm Tae-gu (Hometown).

Indeed, Seo Ji-hwan (Uhm Tae-gu) had once commanded a seedy bunch, intimidating his opponents with his steely gaze and iron fists. But as we read in the teaser’s text screens, what happens when our scary mob boss decides to turn over a new leaf, switching to the fight for good and embarking on his first journey into romance?

The answer is, well, hijinks, as we watch a flailing Ji-hwan try and try to make our heroine Go Eun-ha (Han Sun-hwa) swoon. But with no experience when it comes to women and love, Ji-hwan is in a constant state of panic around Eun-ha, turning him into an adorably awkward and fumbling mess.

The accompanying captions repeat Eun-ha’s question in voiceover, asking, “Who is the pitiful person who made it to age 36 without dating any women?” The teaser then comes to a close as our smitten Ji-hwan wears his heart on his sleeve while his unamused acquaintance remarks on Ji-hwan’s excitement.

Based on a popular webnovel by the same title in Korean, production for the rom-com has PD Kim Young-hwan (Today’s Webtoon) and PD Kim Woo-hyun (Life) co-directing with scripts by Na Kyung. JTBC’s My Sweet Mobster follows Frankly Speaking in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, premiering next month on June 12.

It looks so cute but I hope they don't overdo the aegyo.

Also - please no serial killer/stalker storyline.

Just wish the inevitable "dark" past disappeares when he sets foot in Barbie land.

I love Kwon Yul and can't wait for him to grow out of his 2ML comfort zone. I don't want to hate him too much. Maybe he'll turn out to be a Lovely Detective. 🥰👌

Not usually a fan of "inexperienced" MLs in their mid-30s ... this does seem to have a sweet fairytale vibe. Hwaiting Team. Hope its as good or better than Frankly Speaking. Also Kwon Yul!! 😍😍😍

I am joining you in Hope city as that would be the perfect approach to take; Frankly speaking is our new benchmark💪🏾

I find it odd he has ZERO experience. Dating, sure. Sex? That seems less likely.

Yeah well ... unless the "first love" childhood connection counts as experience!?

So Kwon Yul is in this drama, Frankly Speaking and Connection and no lead roles? 😥

Can someone fill me in on where the love for Kwon Yul started? I haven't really seen him in anything, I don't think, so I don't have an opinion on him, but everyone seems to be sad that he's the SML here! Help?

I have only seen snippets of him in The Great King, Sejong but I've loved him since Bring It On, Ghost.

Kwon Yul by now is a veteran, how time flies! His first drama is the high school drama Mackeral Run in 2007 with Lee Min Ho and Moon Chae-won both taking their first ever lead roles.

He’s been in so many dramas as 2ML. I like him a lot in One More Happy Ending until he became suffocatingly obsessive with Jane Nara and used up all the goodwill with his bestie in Jung Kuang-ho (ML).

He stole the spotlight in his 2-episode cameo in My Unfamiliar Family and it seems all Beanies watching that drama love him so much that a spin-off is on their Wishlist. Then, he was firstly quite swoony until becoming another suffocating 2ML in Dali and Cocky Prince. I always enjoy watching him.

His turn in Frankly Speaking is the best kind of cameo drama watchers like. A ML role is long overdue.

Let's Eat 2

Dojoon bromanced him while coaching Seo Hyun-jin how to make Kwon Yul fall in love. It was double the heartbreak when the OTP gets together and leaves him all alone again.

At least he is employed, in this economy that has to count as a positive.

At least he isn't playing a psychopath in Frankly Speaking... that we know of

My husband still calls him "Steverino" to this day, in reference to his role from Bring It on Ghost (Steverino is a reference to American Dad)

The ML reminds me of an older Gu Jun Pyo for some reason. Maybe its his character type minus being extremely wealthy.
