Great start for "The Midnight Romance in Hagwon" wondering if it can grow or maintain its initial audience, the first 2 episodes were interesting enough to stick around.

Lovely runner continues to tick up every week (yay), im hoping it can hit 6% by the end of its run, sad that Kim Hye-hoon is being shafted in favour of her co-star in terms of publicity, especially when she is doing most of the heavy lifting acting wise.

Also are we witnessing the death of the weekender, the past 3 dramas have struggled to hit and maintain 20%, i still wonder if its a quality issue or simply the fact that viewing patterns have changed.

Re Kim Hye Yoon,I do hope she also gets the recognition she deserves. Her Sol is just an adorable bulldozer that does not know when to give up! Absolutely the heart of the show!

Unsurprisingly he gets on Sol's nerves too!! I loved Sun-Jae fanning her with his hands to cool down her anger over her brother.

I have annoying brothers too but he is something else.
Sun Jae is cute trying to cool down Sol's anger. ☺️

But still Sun-Jae tries his best to get along with his prospective brother-in-law even though Geum makes it well-nigh impossible for *anyone* to get along with him.

Byeon Woo Seok was on Running Man yesterday and I wondered why it was just him. Maybe it was timing and Hye Hoon could be included but it is kinda interesting how he is the breakout of the show (apparently) when they've both done such a good job overall and both had their cute or endearing moments.

Is this a result of women and girls latching on to him rather than the actual show?

Even on here, people were gushing about him first and then it started shifting to include Hye Hoon.

I would not say it happens all the time, but there is a pattern of male leads getting the most of the attention from hit breakout dramas, regardless of whether they were good or not.

The media and the internet tried doing the same thing with Kang Tae-oh from "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" but Park Eun-Bin's performance was too good (she acted circles around him without even trying) and everybody was essentially forced to acknowledge that it was her performance that carried the drama.

Wait, they were doing this with Extraordinary Attorney Woo, even when the whole show literally revolved around Park Eun-Bin's character? How on earth does this make sense?

I do remember seeing ALOT of hype around the guy and how people were like "he's just breaking out! It sucks he has to do his military now.

I didn't know there was more focus or seemingly more focus on him by the media & press though. Wow

Sadly, this happens most of the time. Thus, I have high regards to rare ones who are able to make his co-star shines as well.

In my eyes, Park Eun Bin was the primary focal point in EAW, with the other characters serving more as supports to her storyline. She truly carried the show with her performance. I didn't quite understand the hype surrounding Kang Tae-oh during EAW airing.

In Lovely Runner, BWS and KHY roles apear on equal footing, creating a dynamic that draws admiration from the audience. It's sad that all the hype now are focus on BWS, but it doesn't mean that KHY delivers less. She's there already and has proven time and time again how good an actress she is. If I were to liken KHY to a stock, I'd rather that she maintains a steady chart, consolidating her position while gaining strength. In time, she'll get to reach her upper circuit limit as well.

I guess it's his agency who booked the show and not the producing compagny neither TVN who likes to send their actors on Amazing Saturday.

kim hyeyoon is in no way being shafted in favor of her co-star. he definitely is the breakout, but this is one case, where one star breaking out has not completely overshadowed their co-star. the audience love BOTH of them, as their characters as well as together. and while the male leads are always going to enjoy more popularity, kim hyeyoon is holding her own with a lot of buzz around her acting and natural beauty. she had a little period of no activity for a few weeks due to her agency changover, but now she's in full promo mode, doing a GQ pictorial and interview and going to salon drip 2 with bws.

I do believe she's going to come out of this experience in a stronger, more marketable position. It may feel like BWS is getting more attention right now--and he probably is--but as you say, he entered this less known than KHY so had more ground to make up. It's also not as though she's being completely ignored. And in the long run, I suspect she'll benefit just as much from LR as he will, and deservedly so.

She didn’t after EY even though the two male leads and a secondary lean who is still a wooden actor leaped over her and became sought after. Gender bias and male privilege still runs deeply in the KD space. Hopefully, with a new agency, she can translate the buzz and hype to actual, good roles and going forward will shine even more brightly so as to leave these male costars of the past and present in her professional wake.

She made different choices. She chose a small film, The Girl on a Bulldozer, and she won the best new actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and at Daejong Film Awards.

I'm not worried for her.

9

I agree with @kurama
Just because she isn't getting the press and attention of her costar, that's not necessasily a bad thing as long as she is still able to get projects and sustain herself as well as get recognition for her skills and effort.

With the popularity comes the drama and stress of the fans/public's entitlement and expectations.

Just recently, BWS's agency had to instantly shut down dating rumors cause heaven forbid a handsome 30 something year old guy possibly be dating (especially when the masses are enamored with him)

5

I can’t agree with you more re KHY. She is doing a stellar job in frequently fraught dramatic situations here and as good as BWS is in this role, she has been exceptional, deeply affecting and memorable. She has elevated BWS’s performance and that needs to be acknowledged until the cows come home.

YES to this. BWS is good, but Kim Hye Yoon makes him fantastic. Honestly speaking, a huge reason I feel Ryu Sun-jae is as awesome as he is, is because Im Sol tells me so. Kim Hye-yoon has elevated multiple male co-leads (e.g. don't come @ me, but while I think Rowoon is doing better now, he was very green in Extraordinary You, and their OTP was heavily carried by Kim Hye-yoon.)

I'm only coming @ you to agree! 😂 She was 90% of that duo. Let's just say that playing a character who is supposed to be a blank slate was within Rowoon's capabilities at the time. I'm glad to see KHY getting some catch-up attention and promos.

“ Honestly speaking, a huge reason I feel Ryu Sun-jae is as awesome as he is, is because Im Sol tells me so”. A secular amen to this.
I love that you articulated this visceral reaction I’ve had to how she sees him. It has favourably shaped and textured the views of the audience towards Sunjae and BWS in RL and has allowed many of the more thoughtful viewers to anchor their liking to that and not only his looks, height and the voice.

Yes! Because from another angle, Sun-Jae is kind of weird LOL? He’s been holding on to a high school crush / sweetheart for 15 years (the traumatic experience of the OG timeline, I actually understand, but the new timeline? Not at all). His good looks make him a prince but if it was a short, overweight, balding, middle aged man, no one would be sympathetic.

But anyway, right now even I’m swooning over him, and it’s because Sol loves him haha - so his affections are valid too. If she liked Tae Sung romantically and Sun Jae only as an idol, I’d have been behind that too!

Hence! My views - I love Sun-Jae, but in part because I trust Sol when she tells me he’s lovable.

9

@greenfields: Exactly. Sunjae shines because some of us were persuaded to see him through Sol’s loving eyes otherwise apart from the objectively beautiful BWS bringing all that to Sunjae, he is not portrayed as a remarkable figure. He is a filial son but isn’t particularly kind or generous to others. He is just nice enough which is fine. Certainly much better than a lot of the toxic and awful young men in KDs. But she is bonded to him for better or worse and that love is both ordinary and extraordinary.

8

I dropped EY because of how awfully wooden Rowoon was in it (as I did with most of his other shows as well, he got marginally better in Matchmakers). But I might take it back up because I love KHY so much.
@greenfields

Kim Hye-yoon has elevated multiple male co-leads

I read a post today that this role was written with her in mind. Goes to show that she is being taken seriously where it matters. I do think even in LR both male leads shine more because of her. Honestly, if she were to choose Tae today, I would back that too. She is that believable. (Though if Tae chose Sunjae I would back that too 🤣)

Sun-Jae is kind of weird LOL

That was the first thing that had struck me. I like flawed leads and it's ok that he is a little mean, but I did find his fixation with Sol a little unnerving, vs Tae who has a very healthy outlook on a woman he likes but does not cling to. But Sol made it ok haha!

6

This I agree too..I did find him weird sometimes but it's ok because of sol😂

2

She was teaching Rowoon how to act in some of the bts videos. The fangirls may not want to admit it, but she carried that whole show.

Absolutely! Thanks for mentioning this. He was supposed to be a blank slate as a character in a good portion of the drama as Elinor mentioned above but any discerning viewer could tell he was extremely green and a novice. Fortunately for him, being beautiful, very tall and having a lovely voice as well as being an idol, propelled him into the role and past it to stardom.

6

It's not true. They were helping each other. Not teaching how to act.

They all said how this project was important because it was their first important role and they often went to a coffee shop to discuss of their roles.

Kim Hye-Yoon was surely the heart of the drama because Danoh was the heart of the story and she did a great job in this role. I can't imagine another actress in this role.

But we don't have to belittle her costars to make her looking good because she's already great.

I love Kim Hye-Yoon but be

You have strong opinions and express them frankly even if other people might not like them. Hence, you should be able to cope with other people’s opinions. There was nothing belittling in our exchanges so I suggest that you take it easy and not through unsubstantiated accusations around.

I continue to live in hope that Lovely runner will get to 5% and maintain or rise even more than that in the last two weeks of its run. Is that really a big ask for a Mon-Tuesday show that is as consistently good as this one?

I'm so happy for "Lovely Runner!" It's definitely the little drama that could right now--a gem that more and more people discover and fall in love with each week. Yes, BWS is the one getting the lion's share of the buzz, and that's both deserved (he is doing a great job in it) and expected (I don't know enough about the Korean entertainment apparatus to comment on whose agency is doing or not doing what, but I do know that considering the demographics of the audience and those most likely to start clamoring for more of their fave, it's no surprise that BWS is getting so much publicity, although I expect in the long run, that buzz will also benefit KHY in terms of more choices of roles offered and exposure as it must be clear to any exec. who's watching that she's very talented and anchoring the show).

I also really liked "Midnight Romance," and was incredibly curious how it would land with a domestic audience. It's thoughtful and immersive, but also tackling some heavy issues and definitely adult in tone and theme. I could see viewers loving it obsessively or deciding they want something more lightly entertaining. Will be interesting to see what happens on the show and in the ratings.

Finally, after this week, I'm fully on-board with "Atypical Family" which is weird, sometimes unsettling, and occasionally magical. This one, too, is unconventional enough that it was hard for me to predict if domestic audiences would stick with it, but their numbers are respectable so far.

I like "Frankly Speaking," but I think it took a bit to get going and find its footing. The first two episodes were a lot of set-up, and the main premise provides its humorous moments, yet maybe wasn't as lighthearted and fun as viewers were expecting. But these last two episodes picked up the dramatic stakes and things are progressing so hopefully the audience will grow. Both leads are certainly doing a great job!

Even after 3 years of looking at this DB feature and reading the comments, I still have very little idea about why a show appeals to the Korean viewing audience, but could it be the networks were right in no longer scheduling dramas on Wednesday and Thursday? I can't see why that would be, myself--the start of the work week, MT, would seem to me to be the least watched scheduling slot, but certainly the ratings reflect differently.

Next Monday Ji Sung returns to kdramaland in SBS’s CONNECTION (As of now I don’t know of a legal US stream.)
Ji Sung’s 2017 SBS Wed/Thur drama DEFENDANT (still available on Viki US) was an early favorite of mine. Its ratings were so good (with a range of 14.5% for episode 1 to 25.4% for episode 16) that 2 episodes were added with ratings of 27.0% and 28.3%.
I don’t know what the problem is with Wed/Thu.
I hazard a guess that if tvn’s QUEEN OF TEARS aired on Wed/Thur it would have had the same ratings it got as a weekend drama.

A nice bump up for episode 4 for JTBC’s A TYPICAL FAMILY. I have a soft spot for Jang Ki-young but haven’t seen him in a drama in 5 years (OCN’s KILL IT (2019) but I think JKY and cast and crew can be pleased with these early ratings especially after the way the writer introduced the characters (so negatively) in the first two episodes. I imagine TAF (being so unusual) will find its core audience maybe around 4%-5% who will stick with it to the end. I think by episode 4 it will be a drop for those who are tuned off by certain aspects in the drama. I will be staying to the end.

Ah! Well thank you The Midnight Studio, you didn't disturb the ratings much. But you're a drama I enjoyed. 😊

Even without competition Frankly Speaking does not appear to be finding its audience in SK. If only Beanies' voted counted.

Sun Sol please continue your Lovely run.

In the packed weekend most dramas seem to be doing well. Hope Chief Detective bows out next week with its highest rating. Hwaiting!!
