Premiere Watch: Parasyte – The Grey

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Sci-fi, horror, mystery, action
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: Yeon Sang-ho fans, prepare! His latest production is here in the shape of a 6-episode adaptation of the manga series by Hitoshi Iwaaki. Now, I can’t say I’ve ever made it through a Yeon Sang-ho anything myself, but I pay utmost respect for his craft and storytelling abilities. In Parasyte – The Grey (in addition to a perplexing spelling choice for “parasite”) we have the story of a parasitic invasion. Human hosts are grotesquely taken over, and it’s Team Parasyte for planet earth. The drama stars Jeon So-ni, Gu Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun, among other familiar faces.

TL;DR: Yeon Sang-ho is back with is latest creation

The images that popped up on Netflix reminded me of a mix of the clicker zombies in the Last of Us (I'm talking video game, I have not watched the TV show) and Stranger Things demogorgon.

Hmm, debating if I have in it to sit through 6 episodes of horror and gore. I liked the anime and the Japanese live-action, but my capacity for the horror genre isn't what it used to be.

Not the drama you can watch while having lunch (made the mistake of watching 10 min during lunch). Not the drama you want to watch before going to bed.

I hate, hate the image that has been popping up on Netflix. It viscerally repulses me so on that basis only this a big no for me.

It's not bad. There is gore but after a while you simply get used to it because it's never used for jump scares or creeps. It's not a slasher and the action sequences are tastefully done. For me, it looked more sci fi than horror. Of course, it does have a couple of scenes that might be a tad disturbing. Ironically, the first two episodes have most of it. If you can tolerate that, it veers away from gore pretty quickly.

Is the "Parasyte" used here the same as the title for the movie in Korean? I thought it was an interesting choice to use the same or similar title as another very, very well known piece of Korean media.

Tbf, Parasyte the anime was a bigger phenomenon in East Asia, well before Parasite came about

The titles are different in English (Parasyte/Parasite) and in Korean (기생수/기생충).

a perplexing spelling choice for “parasite”

The manga that this drama is adapted from is spelled "Parasyte," and the Korean title is a direct translation of its Japanese title 寄生獣. (Also, the manga was published in 1989, so it came before the 2019 film.)

Ahh, that explains it then. Thanks for the info!

Come to think of it, I do remember hearing about a manga with that title

Hm, two episodes in and I’m leaning toward a drop. It’s not terrible, merely passable at this point. Has anyone gone further along?

I have only watched one episode.
It was a decent start but I found it predictable. I guess the team leader of the special squad was supposed to be ‘cool’ but I found her delivery a bit annoying 😅

I've watched till 4. Some parts stayed predictable, but others were unexpectedly good. I'm liking it more, if not Train to Busan or Hellbound levels.

The special ops leader was so hammy, I cringed at times. But her backstory shown later helped a lot.

Just finished it - it's late and I don't yet have the notes ready, so will come back, but I started episode one, thinking I will space it, and ended up finishing it. I really liked it.

Oh good. I'm glad I persisted because it already improved. Two more episodes to watch.

I think the second and third episode had a bit of a pacing problem, but not too bad. Let's share notes tomorrow.

I couldn't get to any today, but tmrw for sure. But, I admit I was watching the last few episodes late at night, fighting sleep for a bit of me time. If I took mental notes then, they'd be an unintelligible scrawl.😊

I'm almost done with this drama and I really like it! It's not as innovative as KINGDOM or as scary as THE GUEST but PD-nim and Writer-nim have done a decent job of adapting it from the original anime series and they keep the pace brisk and the action on point.

I wouldn't call it Horror. It's more like Dark Sci-Fi. But then again, a drama/movie/book needs to make me feel creeped out or terrified in order for it to qualify as Horror for me.

Exactly my thought. It's not truly horror. There is way more bloodbath, gore and scenes of brutality in many non-horror dramas.
