News bites: April 2, 2024
by tccolb
- An official announcement is out for Disney+’s new mystery-thriller Nine Puzzle, with still-a-cop Sohn Seok-gu (A Killer Paradox) suspicious of profiler Kim Da-mi (Our Beloved Summer) as they’re further embroiled in a re-surfacing serial murder case. Slated to release sometime in 2025, filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (Narco-Saints, The Spy Gone North) is at the helm with writing by Lee Eun-mi (Navillera, Tunnel). [News1]
- With promos now in full swing, a new poster has dropped for JTBC’s upcoming No Secrets, showcasing our frazzled truth-speaker Go Kyung-pyo (D.P. 2) and the opportunity-grabbing show writer Kang Hanna (Red Heart). Also starring the once an idol but now a trot singer Joo Jong-hyuk (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), the rom-com’s shenanigans begin on May 1 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [News1]
- Song Hye-gyo (The Glory) is reviewing an offer to star in a new period series by writer Noh Hee-kyung (Our Blues). If she accepts, this will mark Song’s third (!) time working with writer Noh, after The World They Live In and That Winter, the Wind Blows. In the meantime, Song Hye-gyo has been busy with filming for the mystery-occult movie Dark Nuns. [Newsen]
- In more casting news, we may be getting a Moon Ga-young (The Interest of Love) and Choi Hyun-wook (Twinkling Watermelon) pairing in a new webtoon adaptation set in the early aughts, titled He’s the Black Dragon (roughly translated). With both actors currently in talks, the production is in discussion to potentially air on tvN. [Osen]

- Speaking of tvN, Resident Playbook had initially been penciled in for May, but the series has reportedly been pushed back due to various considerations – likely the ongoing medical conflicts in South Korea. Now expected to broadcast in the latter half of 2024, the spin-off stars Go Yoon-jung (Death’s Game), Shin Shi-ah (The Witch: Part 2), Kang Yoo-seok (Black Knight), Jung Joo-won (A Model Family), and rookie actor Han Ye-ji. [News1]
- Starting and ending with Disney+ today, Blood Free released new character posters and teasers of our leads: Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan), Han Hyo-joo (Moving), Lee Hee-joon (A Killer Paradox), and Lee Moo-saeng (Hide). Premiering on April 10 next week, the sci-fi is helmed by PD Park Chul-hwan (Grid) with scripts penned by Lee Soo-yeon (Grid, Forest of Secrets). [Sports Donga]

Will someone please tell Son Suk-ku to stop looking like a regular guy I might see on the street in his press photos? It’s distracting, and is only gonna lead to me to wondering if “that guy” is actually him over there, or maybe “that guy?”
Creepy stalker ajumma is not a good look! 🥹

😂 😂 😂 Be right there behind ya.
All three are strikingly different from the usual slick promo appearances. I have a feeling opinions will be divided, but I really like the strike against the tyranny of perfectionism.

Hmm ... a regular guy in a designer sweater looking suspiciously like another Disney + ML - Flynn Rider. 🍳 Do you have your saucepan ready!!

It's not really press photos but the typical first reading script when people wear casual clothes.

1. I'll be checking this one out for the stellar cast!
2. No Secrets/Frankly Speaking still looking old school 😍
3. This is a modern historical about the early years of the broadcasting industry in Korea.
4. He's the Black Dragon looks fun! The story is set in the gaming industry of the early 2000s.

Yes to Nine Puzzles! Kim Dami and Son Suk Ku as leads is already a big plus. Kim Dami looks adorable in the photo.
Then we got Blood Free coming soon!
Disney + is working hard to be a good alternative to netflix for kdrama content.

Disney+ is making it tempting to subscribe but then letting you drop from a height when you discover it’s not available in your area. We don’t even have the Hulu option in our region.

There is that they have to fix. It sucks when a drama you like is not available in your area

1. Huh ... the other half of Our Beloved Summer OTP and SSG!! Okay then. Just do a rom-com SSG - not angsty melos please.
2. Go Kyung-pyo 😍 😍 😘 🫰
3. Song Hye-kyo as an occult dabbling nun (or shaman?) and a Joseon angsty FL. I'm waiting to be surprised.
4. Yay yah! 🙌 I like this pairing.
5. Not the first time RL affects dramas. Hope the production / crew don't face too many losses.
6. The leads *swoon* are enough for me.

The period piece that Song Hye-Kyo is doing with Noh Hee-Kyung is about the beginnings of Korean broadcast TV in the 80s.

1. Sohn Seok-ku is determined to not lose those stubbles. I wouldn't too. They adorn his jawline so well...
2. Can we have many episodes of Kang Hanna looking this free. Bloody Heart and Start Up had her looking prepared for battle for most of the time. She looks so bright and full and free here.
3. I'm curious to know what Writer Noh Hee-kyung has penned.
After Our Blues, I vowed to watch her pieces.
5. Would it affect the ratings?
6. I'm tightening my belts for this one. It seems like I'm signing up for war. But, I'm up for it.

NINE PUZZLE - profilers. augh. the one mystery thriller subgenre I can't bring myself to care for. Plot seems cool, though, so good for those who enjoy it.
excited for BLACK DRAGON! maybe because I'm into games and the premise speaks to me. also, I loved Choi Hyun-wook in WEAK HERO CLASS!

NO SECRETS (aka FRANKLY SPEAKING) looks like it will be good- and hopefully available on one of my streaming platforms. If it is replacing QUEEN OF TEARS then maybe Netflix?

The article say it's filling the Wednesday-Thursday slot so I guess it's replacing the midweek void. (Yay!) No idea about platform yet.

Oh, I like the Frankly Speaking title better. It has an old-fashioned vibe. Something a straightlaced newscaster might preface their truth bombs with.
