News bites: March 28, 2024
by tccolb
- Coupang Play announced that the rom-com Cinderella at 2AM has been added to 2024’s lineup, slated to release later this year on both Coupang Play and JTBC. Putting a spin on the well known fairytale, the webnovel/webtoon adaptation will have Shin Hyun-bin (Tell Me That You Love Me) refusing to become Cinderella when she discovers boyfriend Moon Sang-min (Wedding Impossible) is a chaebol – opting to break up and take that fat money envelope from chaebol mom. [Coupang Play]
- Perfect Family is reportedly headed to MBN and is currently in talks to potentially air in May or June. Starring Park Joo-hyun (The Forbidden Marriage), Yoon Se-ah (Sweet Home 2), and Kim Byung-chul (Doctor Cha) among other talents, the mystery series has already completed filming with Japanese filmmaker Yukisada Isao (The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese) at the helm. [Star News]
- In the meantime, Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) has packed his bags and is ready to go as MBC’s Chief Detective 1958. With Lee taking on the title role previously played by veteran actor Choi Bool-am (Goodbye to Goodbye), the latest teasers (found here and here) once again pay homage to the much celebrated original series. Also starring Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet), Choi Woo-sung (Melancholia), and Yoon Hyun-soo (A Good Day to Be a Dog), the crime-action’s new prequel will be coming to our screens on April 19. [MBC (1), (2)]
- Speaking of MBC classics, a remake is in the works for the 1994 drama M, a horror-mystery that still haunts me because apparently I was old enough to watch it at age seven (thanks Mom). Currently called M – Reboot, production for the new series is in the early stages, with an offer out to Park Ji-hyun (Flex x Cop) to play a leading role. [Sports Kyunghyang]
- Bae In-hyuk (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) may be returning to Joseon (again) for the new historical fiction Check-in Hanyang, which also has Kim Ji-eun (Branding in Seongsu) in talks for the central character. In a coming-of-age story about growth and love, the story follows a group of four young adults upon their meeting at a guest house. [Newsen]
- A new group poster has been charted for Disney+’s Blood Free, showcasing leads, Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan), Han Hyo-joo (Moving), Lee Hee-joon (A Killer Paradox) , and Lee Moo-saeng (Hide). With scripts by the acclaimed Lee Soo-yeon (Grid, Forest of Secrets) and PD Park Chul-hwan (Grid) directing, the sci-fi thriller is now just two weeks away, premiering on April 10. [MBC]

I am very interested in Perfect Family and Blood Free. #1 reason is I love the cast. Yes even Kim Byung Chul, he may have been a creepy guy in Goblin but he made me a fan with what he did with his character in Doctor Cha.
As for Bae In Hyuk's next project, I may have to wait for his next drama. I am not a fan of his potential FL.

1) Another noona romance for Moon Sang-Min as chaebol son... I'm not a big fan of Shin Hyun-Bin and MSM is still green... not sure it's the best pair.
4) It sounds like a modern drama for now.

I was excited about #1 until I saw the casting. I'm not a big fan of age gaps regardless of gender

I don't really care when the actors are good. It depends a lot on the actors, their characters, their interactions, etc. I found some actors having an age gap more confortable than actors around the same age.

It really does depend on the actors and the story. I don't mind age gaps at all, in either direction.

Wow! The cast for 2 is solid as solid can be.
The more I read about Blood Free, the more the ante is upped.

Some beanies including me really love JJS, the other main lead. I hope she will get cast again in a (good) drama despite WI’s low ratings. MSM did his best as it was his first leading role. Give him a chance. He showed promise in UTQU and hopefully will improve.

1. Maybe....
3. Yesss
4. Maybe...
5. Not fond of this type of coming-of-age saeguk, but once in a while, I will dip my toe into one or two saeguk for fun.
6. JJH and sci-fi thriller...I am going to watch it.

Tell Me That You Love Me
This an interesting premise. If ONLY that's how the drama would progress. In Kdrama love preservers and it's going to end up being another predictable basic romcom. Blood Free and Chief Detective 1958 may save the day.

Maybe, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I'll be busy for a few months. Do I have a life they say. This is my life I say. Retirement is good for this kind of life. Slow down and enjoy what you like! So good to sit down for a drama with homemade Kimchi Jigae and Korean anything. (There's always the FF button and the drop it or not.)

I don't like Shin Hyun-bin and you can also see the age gap between her costar. Skipping this drama.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm suddenly feeling overwhelm with all the upcoming k-drama news. It's been like a fire hose lately (and not all of it has been discussed here on DB yet). Right now I'm just trying to sort out all the Q2 options 🙃
