News bites: March 21, 2024

Lee Yoo-young, L

  • KBS announced that Treat Me Carelessly (roughly translated) has been lined up on the year’s schedule to air in May, with L (a.k.a. Kim Myung-soo) (Numbers) and Lee Yoo-young (Insider) headlining the webtoon adaptation. In an opposites attract rom-com, a Confucian-abiding traditionalist hero will be pitted against a devil-may-care heroine, who is carving her own path in the world. [Newsen]

  • New promos have dropped for Disney+’s Blood Free, where Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan) proves he’s a worthy bodyguard to CEO Han Hyo-joo (Moving) by passing three qualifying tests: found here, here, and here. Coming to our screens on April 10, the sci-fi thriller also stars Lee Hee-joon (A Killer Paradox), Lee Moo-saeng (Hide), and Park Ji-yeon (A Model Family). [Osen]

  • Kim Sun-young (Queen of Divorce) has been cast in JTBC’s Sales of Virtue, potentially joining Kim So-yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938), Kim Sung-ryung (Kill Heel), and Lee Se-hee (Bad Prosecutor) in the adult wares market, selling door-to-door. Set against the backdrop of 1990s South Korea, production for the series is in the early stages. [Newsen]
  • Casting also continues for MBC’s short comedy I Don’t Like Donkatsu, filling out the little village world with Jeon Hye-bin (Revolutionary Sisters), Lee Joong-ok (A Killer Paradox), and best granny Kim Young-ok (The Midnight Studio). With Jung Sang-hoon (Twinkling Watermelon) as our central hero who has to brave a pending vasectomy, the 2-episode drama is expected to air later this year. [Xports News]

  • A new poster and teaser have come out for Netflix’s sci-fi horror Parasyte: The Grey, where Jeon So-ni (Our Blooming Youth) stands as an outcasted halfling in the divide between parasite and humankind. The showdown unleashes come April 5, with Gu Kyo-hwan (D.P. 2) and Lee Jung-hyun (The Family Is Coming) also starring in the manga adaptation. [Osen]
  • In contrast, tvN brings us sunny smiles in the new character posters for Lovely Runner, bringing down our blood pressure with a sweet timeslip romance between Byun Woo-seok (Strong Girl Nam-soon) and Kim Hye-yoon (Snowdrop). Premiering on April 8 in the Monday-Tuesday slot, the story will transport us to 2008 where our heroine begins Operation Save My Star. [Newsen]

Cautiously adding Treat me carelessly to the long list but the name makes me concerned about what that means? Is it referring to a one sided approach to a relationship; casual sex no commitment relationship when one person wanted a long term relationship or a disrespectful platonic relationship of some kind.

Sales of virtue door to door adultwares 😮I can’t imagine what the products are that would work for and who would have the guts to do it. I am picturing Ann summers type products but maybe I am completely wrong and it’s contraceptives to reduce the growing number of children in orphanages.

I don’t like Donkatsu and Lovely runner remain on the list.

I don't know what exactly the webtoon was about, except that he is a descendant of a family that has believed in Confucianism for centuries (personally, I don't hate Confucianism, because it is a guardhouse of partarchy) and rigidly sticks to the principles of Confucianism, and she does not believe in Confucianism and on this basis their characters collide. Does this mean that she leads a casual sex life? Her image from the webtoon is that of a typical Korean conservative, buttoned up to the neck, wearing a granny sweater, but in Korea clothes don't really determine anything. Lots of characters in Korean dramas have these terrible sweaters, no matter what their sexual/love lives are.

Had to look up Ann Summers because I had no idea what it was (😅), but yes, I think it's stuff along that line.

Honestly, I can see them going all out with the adult wares stuff. Hit the Spot did the same for the topic of sex and sexuality back in 2022, after all. And they went all out on that one, so 🤷🏾‍♀️

The key word here is "hopefully":

Looking forward to BLOOD FREE. Hopefully it will be as thought-provoking and entertaining as we'd expect from the Ji-Hoon Oppa and Hyo-Joo Unnie.

Getting super excited about PARASYTE: THE GREY. I've finished the anime and it was bonkers! Hopefully the K-Drama adaptation will do it justice.

The new LOVELY RUNNER posters look so gorgeous. Hopefully the drama will live up to the promising plotline.

The only one of these I'm not at all interested in is My Lovely Runner. I like both leads but the drama feels very been there, done that and I just cannot.

That poster of Blood free! Love these two actors. Can’t wait.
Hoping it’s on Hulu US 🙏🏽, else dark side it is.

1 - what a weird visual pairing, honestly. I love LYY and L isn't that bad actually, but together... idk, can't see it. Premise doesn't sound hopeful either.
2 - I'll wait until reviews are out. Cast is dream come true, but something is off with synopsis, can't pinpoint what exactly...
5 - same as above.

(1) This just sounds like a fusion sageuk in modern dress.

(2) Agree, there's something a little off-kilter - it all seems too *dramatic* for the premise.

None of the others interests me - although (3) I'm old enough to remember going to pre-Internet "Tupperware parties" selling sexy lingerie and toys.

1 - yes, this whole thing about super old-fashioned conservative guy and wild liberal girl somehow becoming an item feels very retro. Fully expect a lot of unappealing lines and behavior from both leads (and ML's family) for the sake of cheap laughs.
2 - guess I just don't like an artificial drama regarding food, that's already a rather sensitive topic as it is.
3 - that was a thing?! Whoa! And here I thought I've seen quite a bit in life...

1 - Although I didn't watch Numbers, I thought Myung-Soo was totes adorbs in Meow the Secret Boy. Those dimples... oof! I might give this one a try.

3 - Hmmm.... the addition of Kim Sun-Young is making this more appealing than when it was originally announced. I just love her!

6 - Just release it already!! Enough of the gorgeous marketing torture 😜

SALES OF VIRTUE mayor may not really be workable: It works as comedy but only if you understand that the humor has to be on the suggestive and bawdy side- which many K-drama executives would shy away from. It would just go flat if they water it down.

I am not familiar with the webtoon that TREAT ME CARELESSLY is based upon. It could be good but I may need more information.
