The search begins for MBN’s Missing Crown Prince Suho

A new teaser has dropped for MBN’s upcoming Missing Crown Prince — a rom-com with murderous forces lurking in the fictional Joseon backdrop, targeting our title’s hero, played by Suho (Behind Your Touch).

Silly me for thinking this story would be a fun little romp about the soon-to-be crown princess Hong Ye-ji (Love Song for Illusion) kidnapping her betrothed before the wedding. Alas, the new teaser is stepping up the ~drama~, opening with an attack on the palace where an injured but defiant crown prince Lee Geon (Suho) questions, “Do you think your terrible secret will stay concealed by killing me?”

In flashback, we then see the string of events that have been plaguing the royal family. First, Geon witnesses a clandestine affair – only to then discover a dead body while fishing in the pond. Next, a court lady collapses in front of the queen, and Geon’s younger half-brother Minkyu (Maestra – Strings of Truth) finds a dead scholar hanging from the rafters of a room.

But as we read in the appearing text screen, the cherry on top of the ongoing chaos is “the crown prince’s unprecedented disappearance.” Royal physician Kim Joo-hun (Castaway Diva) worries about Geon’s safety and the king Jeon Jin-oh (Vigilante) immediately orders for Geon to be brought back.  In voiceover, we hear the king’s desperate inner plea for his son to be alive.

Meanwhile our crown prince somehow finds himself in the dangerous (?) company of our heroine Choi Myung-yoon (Hong Ye-ji). Although they fight off their assailants together, a wary Geon questions Myung-yoon’s true identity, reasoning, “I need to at least know if you’re on my side, if you want me to follow you.”

Back at the palace, queen dowager Myung Se-bin (Doctor Cha) begs for the crown prince’s life. But the cryptic reply is that the crown prince can be changed if needed. As the final sequence introduces us to the main cast, we end on Geon’s determined resolve to return home to his father and make the culprits pay for what they’ve done.

Directed by PD Kim Jin-man (Rebel – Thief Who Stole the People) with scripts by Bossam – Steal the Fate writers, Kim Ji-soo and Park Chul, MBN’s Missing Crown Prince will be premiering next month on March 9.

Once again I am worried about the acting capability of this cast to carry a drama with this tone and subject matter. None of these leads have exactly impressed me in the past.

Worried about the drama. I prefer that this will be a light romcom.

If, in the absolutely impossible world where I become a Korean actor, I am asked to pick a stage name…It will be ‘Ye Jeon-ha’ for absolute sure.

Ha, thanks. That role is taken here by someone else, but in the meantime I did realize that I could live my dream through my screen name, if only for one day!!

Continuing along the theme of choosing names.

In an ‘alternate’ Dramabeans universe I think I would choose the name ‘Wangseja’ or maybe just ‘Seja’ to pay homage to Crown Prince Sohyeon (1612-1645) and Lee Joon-hyuk (1984)’s portrayal of same in LJH’s first sageuk appearance: SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR & JOY (2021) (Viki US).
(I haven’t seen it yet but hopefully soon I will be able to watch favorite Kim Sung-cheol’s portrayal of Sohyeon in the film THE NIGHT OWL (2022)).

Continuing the royal title. I think I'll pick "Jusang." The Queen Dowager has seniority over the king, and I love it when women rule from behind the curtain, but it could also be a disaster. I'm at a crossroads when it comes to Queen Dowager Insu.

Now you went and broke my heart to a thousand pieces by reminding me of LJH in SRI&J

LOL. On my fanwall if you scroll down a bit to 2021 there you will find LJH in his Crown Prince attire from SRI&J.
I hope LJH’s appearance in SRI&J was not a one-off because he aced his ‘audition’. I definitely would like to see him return to the sageuk genre.

Agree with every word.

I think I'm all sageuk-ed out for a while... 🙃

Ok, this teaser makes a lot more sense given the writers' previous work. I'm still ??? about the ML and FL, so it's a toss-up for me. I think I'll wait and see what the verdict is before starting.

We can never just have a simple romcom. Gotta be some sort of intrigue and murder somehow.

Obviously drama writers are most concerned about our delicate digestive systems being shocked into a slump as it may be unable to handle pure fluff without a meaty bowl of intrigue and murder or intrigued murder ... you can choose anything as long as it is devilishly scheming.

I just found out that my soft-hearted self prefers intrigues and a few murders to the anxious spiralling of pretence of that dominate a comedy like "Abbott's Elementary" that I'm seeing with my family. I know K-dramas use that thing too; someone ridiculously pretending everything is perfect, and one lie bringing the next with it with increasing absurdity. But it is so much worse in typical American rom-com.
And though I avoid tragic tales and the thrill of watching cold-blooded psychopaths, someone pretending they understand the new didactic software seem to frighten me more than an evil Left State Minister who in the introductory scene has killed the main character's mother while she cryingly called her name, 10-15 years before the "presence" of the plot and love story we are going to follow. 🤷🏻‍♀️🫘

I like the will-they-won't-they of Janine x Gregory, but I always did think Abbott Elementary could be improved if Jacob turned out to be a secret chaebol heir, kicking off 16 episodes of that ever exciting corporate intrigue. Or perhaps the ever popular gritty crime storyline...

Omo ... way to make sure we don't come within viewing distance of the drama. 🙈
Sigh, Suho can't you do watchable dramas. My parents still fondly remember you from 1% and I literally can't recommend anything more to them. 🤷‍♀️

Um, where was the "com" part of romcom in that teaser? Unless we're talking about the amusingly over-the-top graphics at the end.

I know that some have their doubts about this rom-com because the preview shows violence and murder, hanging, illicit affairs, etc. But I've watched enough kdramas to know that there is no rom-com without a few bloody stomach wounds.

But I do have a couple of serious concerns:

1st: Is it the left or the right minister who is villain behind the nefarious goings on? Because if there isn't a left or right minister poisoning people we know this show won't be funny or romantic at all!

2nd. The photo of the person who I desperately hope, in the name of good fun, is the villainous left or right minister, DOES NOT HAVE A TRUE WHISPY BEARD. Look, if there's one thing we know about the Joseon era, its that bad men carefully groomed their chin hair to create a whispy beard. I don't think I can enjoy the hilarious stomach stabbing if the villain sports a full beard for the entire show!

I second both your serious concerns. Also, (1) what do we do if there is no left 👈 or right 👉 but an ↔️ ambidextrous minister. (2) When will we have a Joseon era men's grooming products PPL. 🤔

Without a Left Minister there's no villain because everyone knows the Left Minister is always evil. An ambidextrous minister would just be torn. Oh I know, it's Joseon and Hyde.

Wouldn’t it be funny if all the beanies were waiting for other beanies to watch it, which meant no one watched. The weecap would have tumbleweed rolling and after a day of nothing some beanies would venture in to ask who watched it and everyone else would add a comment saying not me I was waiting for reviews.
