Happy to see Marry My Husband cross the 10% rating and on a Monday-Tuesday slot. I am also happy that the AFC has little effect on Knight Flower's rating as well (a slight decrease from 13.1% to 12.6%).

Queen of Divorce did quite well for itself (getting close to 5%) for the second episode.

No doubt, Koreans love their revenge plot and their cartoonish villains.

I think it's wish fulfillment - there's a lot of injustice and power imbalances that they see and have to put up with daily, and these stories are likely cathartic. At least, that's what a Korean person said when they discussed the popularity of the Marry My Husband webcomic on Reddit.

Oh, it's the same reason they loved their makjangs.

But it always made me sad for the ones that are well written (the plot and the characters), good acting and have heart like Like Flowers in Sand. Marry My Husband is nothing of that for me (Song Ha-Yoon is really great in this role).

Yes, Song Ha-yoon is fantastic. Marry My Husband is better than the comic but I don't think that makes it a good drama. My favorite makjang was Graceful Family!

Chill...it is just @kurama 's opinion, and she has the right to express it here (no matter if one likes it or not).

4

In case you are wondering, I love Marry My Husband, but I do understand that not everyone will share the same taste/opinion in drama.

3

I never wrote the opposite but I don't stop commenting what I think. So your comment is useless.

2

So? They arent even on the same time slot. You seem to hate MMH ever since lmao

Oh I never really liked it an never hide it neither.

But you didn't understand my comment. I was talking in general. Other revenge dramas were successful like Taxi Driver and other little gems were not like Tell That You Love Me.

5

Sounds legit. 🤭 I think that is pretty reasonable.

PS - I love cartoons but like Molang and Piu Piu.

Romcoms are rather un-popular or should i say out of flavor in Korea these days, unless it is accompanied with conflicts/thrillers/something else (apart from romance) or they have big stars on their cast list (such as Kim Soo Hyun).

Pretty much. Plus having a marketable OTP helps a lot - like DR SLUMP had more than 1.5% jump in Ep4 which amped the romance up. Ofc this can also be attributed to two less competitors on a Sunday night, but that's a significant leap for just that.

The romance is super low key. Like, rather than huge dramatic developments or tropey scenes pushing the characters together, they are just forming a friendship, spending a lot of time together, and realizing how much they mean to each other. It's lovely.

10

Aside of small bits of campy comedy I'm partial about, rather sweet and heartwarming. Basically two gorgeous doctors nice people at the lowest period of their lives finding comfort and support in each other. Overall quite pretty and well-shot with decent acting and some chemistry. I'm not crazy about it but so far it has been a good watch.

I'll probably binge it later, then.

3

Agreed. But also, there haven’t been any good rom coms to come out lately minus Samdalri which is reflective of the ratings. Hoping for some good/great rom-coms this year because when done right, kdramas does it best.

Acquaintances (Lee Joon Hyuk and Han Ji Min) on SBS. The rest I have to wait and see. These days i prefer my couples to be more mature something like Crash Course in Romance.

1

I somehow missed CCIR but I am also looking forward to Acquaintances. 😊 I agree with your preference for mature couples too.

While I like school romance as much as the next person (A Love So Beautiful K-drama is one of my favorites), I would be much more interested in a "mature" romance. Where are you Gong Yoo oppa.

Planning to add Queen of Tears (the cast, PDs and writer). The cast and production crew are all A-listers and some of the best in their field in Korea.

3

@peiyeelai I have my fingers crossed for Queen of Tears and am trying to be *cautiously optimistic* to temper my expectations. 😀

2

Shame Like flowers in sand didn’t get to 3.0 for the finale.

Good to see Dr Slump and Queen of divorce climbing hoping they both hit 10.0 before the end of their run.

Is it simply that there are too many Saturday shows? All the weekend shows have their Friday or Sunday numbers higher. Except poor My Happy Ending.

Nice to see so many shows doing well.

Good to see most everyone doing well. tvN really hasn't had a breakout hit in its Saturday-Sunday slot since Crash Course in Romance a year ago.

TvN was fresh with interesting dramas a few years ago, but now all their shows look similar and predictable. It wouldn't be a surprise if they end up like the public cable channels in ratings.

CJ E&M would not let their cable channel end up like the public channels. They have the funds to buy potentially high-rated shows that Studio Dragon does not produce.

tvN (like OCN back in the day) has offered some terrific dramas, the problem for us outside SK has always been availability. For those of us in the US it is hit or miss.

Now that you've reminded me, losing OCN really hurts(((

4

Same, I miss the times when they were still fresh and dared to really push boundaries instead of just betting on the biggest stars they could afford. Don't think they're in huge danger financially, but their identity is clearly lost.

MARRY MY HUSBAND is doing very well- in fact great for its time slot.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE has climbed to respectable but still not great numbers for a weekender. The draw is the mystery. The drawback is that many of the relationships are flat- at time the script seems to be paint by numbers.

QUEEN OF DIVORCE has started well.

Live Your Own Life...if the secondary characters interacted with some supporting characters, say in locating missing father, etc. it would be more interesting.

I think it counts! It’s not a weekender or daily (it’s “only” going for 30 episodes). It’s just a traditional sageuk so its numbers have been hovering around 10% for a while.

Why did Captivating My King had such a low Saturday? That show should be going places, even though I still don't like the FL (she has beautiful eyes though).
Dr Goofball Slump made a neat jump. Sk likes things OTT, that is for sure.

Is Captivating the King a "serious sageuk" in the reins of Bloody Heart, or a lighter one a la The King's Affection, or somewhere in the middle of the two like The Red Sleeve?

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

Captivating the King is a serious fictional saeguk like the Bloody Heart; whereas The King's Affection and The Matchmaker is a light-hearted one, while The Red Sleeve is a faction saeguk (Saeguk drama that combines the use of real historical facts and imagination of writer/author).
