Premiere Watch: Love Song for Illusion

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Fantasy, fusion sageuk, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Like so many dramas we’ve seen lately, Love Song for Illusion is based off of a popular webtoon. In this historical fantasy story, a young crown prince (Park Ji-hoon) has split personalities which would cause all sorts of drama havoc on its own, but there’s also a female assassin on the loose, and other subterfuge at play. From the drama’s promotional materials, it looks like it’s leaning into the dreamy fantasy angle all the way, and I’m kinda into it? I am hoping for a messy, trippy, and delicious tale of a young prince with more problems than he can cope with. Although this is a Monday-Tuesday drama, we’re getting the premiere episodes back to back on Tuesday, so buckle up. (Bonus: Hwang Hee is here!)

TL;DR: Park Ji-hoon has two personalities and things get fantastical

I really hope they stick to the original webtoon. It was filled with layers and layers of intriguing events and unexpected plot twists. In the webtoon even the villains were complex with credible motives for their actions.

Hope the drama has some relation to original webtoon and is not a hot mess like other wentoon adaptions which has webtoon fans fuming.

The webtoon writers really need better contracts to ensure they retain final say on drama scripts.

While we understand certain changes may be required for adaption but why change the core story.

Why does this drama sound like "fusion sageuk, makjang edit"?

The premise is compelling, but the cast is so green that I'll wait for the reviews to check this out.

Look, it's a genuinely *good* story but it's just so dark, I still haven't finished last 10 chapters of the webtoon. Have to emotionally fortify myself before starting this ig.

I really liked the first episode. The drama is dynamic, intriguing, the editing of scenes is smooth, the actors perform well in their roles. Overall, the drama reminds me of "Alchemy of Souls" in terms of cinematography, but with better editing of scenes. In "Alchemy", the scenes were sometimes too short and the narrative was chaotic. I don't feel it here. I feel modernity in drama. I think that the drama could also be enjoyed by someone who doesn't normally watch K-dramas, not just drama fans.

Wow the first episode was really good!! I've been waiting to start my new year with this and so far this is a great start! The pacing of the show is what was really unexpected to me. I was worried about it being a bit slow, but it was quite fast - which is something I'm happily satisfied with bc other shows would've dragged it atleast 2 eps more imo. I wasn’t also excited about the fashion designer thing, but I love how it creates parallels between the ML and FL. The two personalities of the ML are also quite contrast to each other, but I love the way it compliments each other. I need to see them interact in the next episode!!!!

Another new drama which I thought I will drop after 1st episode; because I don't know much about the ML and FL, and except for the male character has similar vibes like Kill Me Heal Me, the revenge plot of the drama sounds like Moon In A Day, the ruling families similar to Alchemy of Souls and the female warrior reminds me of Our Blooming Youth. I thought I was going to watch a copy and paste drama.

But after watching ep. 1, I thought, well this isn't that bad and I could still wait till ep. 2. Guess what, ep. 2 will air next Monday 😭

Just came here from watching the preview of ep 2 amd it looked so fun!! "What will happen when Sajo Hyeon finds out about ny concubine? What if he kicks her out??" Akhee is in such a big mess it makes me even more impatient and curious. Park Jihoon really never disappoints 👏

Between his two personalities, I think Akhee is more interesting and the one who wants to keep her by his side.

According to the webtoon, Hyun is really ruthless to her (but is still the mc) and YESS akhee looks like he's willing to even die just to keep her by his side

I hope in the end, both personalities will make peace with the Crown Prince and merge with him. Also hopefully, Ak Hee in the drama won't be as despicable as in the comic.
