Ji Sung hunts for the conspiracy Connection in first teaser

Giving us an early sneak peek before the looming new year, SBS released a special teaser for the new crime-thriller Connection, where a dark and dire scheme is conspiring for our two leads: Ji Sung (Adamas) and Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine).

The trailer begins with a slew of news reports, where we learn that South Korea has become mired in a sudden surge of drug-related crimes and the government has declared a war against drugs. We’re then introduced to our hero Jang Jae-kyung (Ji Sung), a police inspector who is considered the pride of the drug investigations team and is well-respected by his adoring colleagues.

But what happens when even Jae-kyung gets dragged into the pit of drugs? Lured by a mysterious text message from someone called “Doctor,” we watch as our cop is kidnapped and drugged against his will. Enter journalist Oh Yoon-jin (Jeon Mi-do) who hears the shocking news that someone on the drug investigations police unit has allegedly used drugs himself.

Her co-worker explains that it was “lemon meth” and although Yoon-jin is excited to nab an exclusive story, they also worry that there’s something suspicious about the whole thing. As they further investigate, Yoon-jin astutely realizes that the police are trying to cover up the case and brush it under the rug.

Meanwhile, a panicked Jae-kyung is trying to discover the truth and the teaser ends as he desperately wonders where the connection to everything starts.

Directed by PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) with writing by Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor), SBS’s Connection is slated to broadcast in 2024.

This probably isn't the best timing to promote this show. Or air it.

Lets just hope it manages to steer its course properly and make an insightful commentary on the matter. I believe it not trying to be preachy will soften it's reception.

This is going to be tricky in light of all that has just happened.
I would’ve thought maybe they postpone for it for a while.
It would be sad to see the show get low ratings and everyone’s hard work go to waste because of some association to current events.

Actor Lee Sun Kyun was found dead on the 27th of December. He allegedly committed suicide after being suspected of using drugs. From what I gathered the allegations were false but he got harassed by the media and netizens.
Dunno the details.
Very sad for such a brilliant actor. First saw him in Coffee Prince, though he's mostly known worldwide for his role in the movie Parasite. He still had such a brilliant career in front of him. I've been checking this website for the past few days and I'm still wondering how come there's no article addressing his death here...
Or maybe they're waiting for a more sensible time to talk about it...

But yeah... Postponing this drama wouldn't be a bad idea given what recently happened... Particularly when the last drama Lee Sun Kyun did was also SBS and the whole cast didn't attend the SBS awards because of what happened.

Same person answering here:
Not everybody's first language is English. The expression "to commit suicide" is literally used everywhere, how exactly is a non-native english speaker supposed to know the historical context or the right expression to use I wonder.

Maybe instead of giving lessons to someone who is trying her best speaking a language that is not her own, giving the proper equivalent without the accusatory tone would be more helpful.

Yet another crime thriller in which only the police can save us? Check.

Surge of drug-related crimes? Check.

War on drugs? Check.

Police hero who is adored by his colleagues? Check.

Mysterious made-up drug with any evil property we want to ascribe to it? Check.

Nonsensical kidnapping-and-drugging plot, as if that ever happens? Check.

Implication that even the righteous are secretly doping? Check.

I assume this kind of copaganda is sponsored by the SK government and I want nothing to do with it, no matter who stars in it. I don't think the timing is accidental. I think it's deliberate, to advance the narrative that all drugs are equally evil, that they're everywhere (no one is safe!), and that extreme measures must be taken - and extreme powers granted to the police - to fight them.

THIS!!! Made easy by the fact that they pretend alcohol also isn't a drug so they can continue to drink like fish. It is too bad because I completely miss Ji Sung on my screen.

Exactly. And, let’s not forget that there are valid concerns based on political precedent that the current Conservative Government has amped up this “War on Celebrity Drug use” to detract from its many and varied policy failings.

shikes. im not sure. but on the other hand, maybe it is just the right time to probe and expose. it might hurt, but it will also make it uncomfortable for Korean Police force. on the other hand, they are making a policeman the innocent who is framed when it is actually police doing it to regular people to boost their numbers.

What do they say, “timing is everything”? If this article appeared six months ago, or probably six months in the future it might not be receiving the reaction it seems to be getting. Well, I will be a bit contrarian. This is really the first I have heard of SBS’s CONNECTION and Ji Sung’s ‘connection’ with it.

THE PRESENT. As first of all a cops/crime/mystery genre guy I have observed how that genre in kdramaland has really been left behind the last couple of years. SBS is one network that can still produce a gritty c/c/m drama. THE KILLING VOTE (2023) and THROUGH THE DARKNESS (2022) are two recent examples so on that score SBS’s CONNECTION for me has potential for a good watch.

THE PAST. Back in the early days of my entry into kdramaland (2016/17) it seemed there was available one terrific crime drama after another. One of my early favorites was Ji Sung’s (SBS’s) DEFENDANT. It was my first Ji Sung drama and he was outstanding in it. The ratings were so good that 2 episodes (17 & 18) were added. Remember those days? Episode 18 (final) had a nationwide Nielsen rating of 28.3%. Not only that but this drama aired on Monday and Tuesday.

So even though I have not seen a Ji Sung drama since his DEFENDANT I have a soft spot for the guy and will definitely give SBS’s CONNECTION a watch.

I don't know how much "behind-the-scenes" influences are there. Just hope the drama can rise above that.
