Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 27-Dec. 3, 2023

Our fresh contract marriage dramas (My Demon and The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) seem to have settled into their respective comfort zones in their second weeks — we’ll see if they’re there to stay, or if they will get any more growth. As for our other contract marriage, Perfect Marriage Revenge finishes well, but just barely misses that 3% mark.

Our other finale for Castaway Diva hits a farewell high of 9%, and healing rom-com Welcome to Samdal-ri starts off with over 5% already.

Perfect Marriage Revenge stuck its landing and ended up tripling its viewership from its first episode (yay)

Excellent start for Welcome to Samdal-ri as well as a nice jump for Parks Marriage.

Castaway Diva could have been bigger but the second half of the drama was not as compelling as the first, still those are good numbers.

Oh! So I'm not the only one who felt the second half dip in CD.

I think ENA Tell Me That You Love Me is missing on the Monday-Tuesday's ratings.

I'm surprised by My Demon's ratings. I thought they would do better.

Oh it’s an original? I didn’t know.
Kidnapping day, Bora Deborah was also on Amazon prime but had ratings.
You mean it’s not on any network channel but just on Prime (similar to Disney + shows)?

Yeah. It didn't find a Korean channel to air it, I think it was SBS at the beginning. But now, it's only on Prime. So it's not Prime that produced it, they are just releasing it.

Have times changed ? The only show with double digits is weekender LYOL
Perhaps due to more content, more distractions ?
I usually don’t pay attention to the ratings but I seem to recall that big dramas would have double digits at least.

Then again these are K viewers, not international streamers
I wonder what those numbers look like.

Audiences have become increasingly fragmented over the past few years, streaming and the increase in On-demand accesibility has made it worse.

two second memory spans and the never ending need by producers to make content for these services hasnt helped either.

A side effect of all this is that the quality of the dramas have declined drastically compared to ten years ago for instance.

There are exceptions like Reborn Rich, Dr Cha, Sky Castle etc but they are rare

Audiences are spoilt for choices..though some genres retain its popularity. No longer they have to stick to family or even makjang on public television, they can move around genres, channels and etc these days.

Big time. We didn't have these many dramas during the early 2000s. We used to have 3 to 4 dramas per week and none on Fridays.
I don't remember when we last had a national weekday drama (40%). "Moon Embracing the Sun" 2012 was probably the last sageuk and "Descendants of the Sun" 2016?

So divided 4 ways and now we have 16 dramas on the Currently Airing list on the right.

And I think the availability of overseas content also cut into viewership. I'm sure koreans are also picking up more US tv shows, cdramas, etc. than before. And not sure how the Netflix regional licensing stuff is over there, but in the US, I can see offerings of French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, etc. tv series.

PMR did well. It almost went to 3% on the penultimate episode. Happy for the show!

I thought My Demon would have higher rating!

My man is Cupid is missing from this list. So is the ‘tell me you love me’ drama.

Nothing surprising about My Demon. The plot has the typical yummy chummy song kang who is still enjoyed for his visual internationally and yes...even domestically. But the show has garnered plenty of criticism for the cast poor performance, even if it is trending on netflix.....https://dramadazz.com/my-demon-kim-yoo-jung-and-song-kang-face-criticism/

Plus, fantasy saeguks-romance are still popular especially when LSY is in the lead. And the writing has more to offer than just romance....

I wouldn't rely on that article. The publication is non-credible aggregation and regurgitation of articles from other places online, and it doesn't include any sources or backup - it's all vague "some say" or "many viewers." Maybe My Demon has garnered plenty of criticism, but there's no way to tell from that.

We already know the article is unreliable by it saying

Song Kang... has received positive reviews and praise for his previous works like “Love Alarm,” “Forecasting Love and Weather,” “Nevertheless,” and ‘Sweet Home’.

I am with you on this Elinor. I have a soft spot for Song Kang but I am not watching MY DEMON but I am currently watching his SWEET HOME 2 on Netflix.
The MD ratings (in today’s viewing environment) seem decent.

I didn’t watch tvN’s MR. QUEEN (2020/21) either and I am sure on a historical level some feathers were ruffled in SK while it aired but nevertheless the fact remains that MQ had an average nationwide Nielsen rating of 12.581% with episode 20 (final) rating of 17.371%.
I would think those are terrific domestic numbers especially for a cable outfit.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with The Goryeo-Khitan War? Is it really that good and worth watching? The only time show is pulling off such numbers on public channel is when it stars A listers, it is adaptation of some popular romantic webtoon, or it is a Penthouse.
Plus, the show is competing with Castaway Diva.

Because it is a daeha saeguk, think the epic and well-researched saeguk that highlight the wars and struggles of King Hyeonjong (yes, he is in the history book of Goryeo Dynasty) in keeping Goryeo free from being invade by the Khitans. The drama basically captures how he grow as a naive boy to a great king, who managed to lead his kingdom well. It is in the Korean history

What makes this drama unique is the fact is this is not a drama fill with lovey dovey scences, or fill with terrible stepmother or stepsiblings. It focuses on the king, how the king managed to unite his nation to fight the khitans along with the politics at that time. It has no divas, no idols, no amnesia, no superheroes or an adaptation of bla bla and definitely not a Penthouse 15.0

First, it's an KBS anniversary's sageuk, it's kinda a tradition and it's a public channel not a paid one like TVN. It's a big production with a higher budget.

The era is Goryeo, it's rare to have drama about it, usually it's Joseon era.

It's a sageuk that the older generations in Korea would appreciate, as well as the history nerds. There is a certain level of historical accuracy based on actual historical figures and events. The tribulations they went through are still quite relatable. Their true stories can give messages that transcend time.
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Maybe the later invasions would have turned out differently if they had learned from the past.

PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT deserves the love.

Our Weekender is still struggling but now that we have our OTP holding hands maybe things will pick up? At least this weekend the show seemed to finally remember that Grandma is a character and not a piece of furniture.

I am still surprised by the low ratings of PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE.

I'm curious about Park's Marriage Contract because of not only the ratings but because I saw people compare it to The Law Cafe, saying it was already better and I want to know & why that's the case. From what I can understand, Lee Se Young plays similar characters in both: determined, independent, passionate. So there must be something else there.
Never seen the lead actor in anything except a variety show (which was fine but not great)

I'm curious but not interested in actually watching haha

PMR almost hit 3% on the penultimate episode. Overall the ratings was steady and it was good run for such a fun makjangy show.

The weekend dramas has better ratings overall, as usual.

As everyone's already said, I'm also bit 🤨😞 about My Demon's ratings BUT I'll find solace in staring at its Netflix streaming stats because at least it's doing pretty well there. And also, 4 is up from episode 2's dip into 3. something so FIGHTING!!

Very happy that Park's Marriage Contract is doing well :D
