[Why you should watch] I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day

By: @mmmmm

When DB announced this assignment, the good student in me knew right away that I would write about I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day (also known as When the Weather is Fine). I don’t know how to explain this, but I think it suffices to say that the show struck a chord with me. And I don’t think I’m the only one either — it struck a chord with many Beanies.

If I have to provide reasons to support my claim that this show might be just what you need, there are four reasons I can think of right now that might convince you.

First, the show is beautiful. I like shows that are beautiful to watch (so, yes, cross out those gory, dark shows, or shows that contain scenes shot in dim light (*coughs* Kingdom *coughs*). This show provides a respite for me from reality which is quite darker, literally and figuratively. Who would object that Park Min-young and Seo Kang-joon aren’t good-looking? And those sweaters and overcoats? *melts* Everything is just so gorgeous to watch. The show is mostly set in one winter, so you’ll see plenty of beautiful winter wear, and winter itself. For those that don’t have proper winter (or spring or autumn — only summer), watching this show can make you feel like you are being surrounded by cold, beautiful, white-covered buildings and nature, with winter breezes. (And you don’t have to tell me that in reality it’s quite different from this, but one can always dream.)

Second, the show has one of the best found families, with great characters. Leads with traumatizing experiences? Check. Male lead with a very kind adoptive family? Check. Female lead with troublesome family matters? Check. I don’t know if this can convince you, but hey, they have one of the best supportive found families ever. The male lead has this little book club which is held at night, and the club has great members: a boy with a grandpa, a mother and a daughter, the male lead’s younger sister, a person who sells light bulbs, a best friend who works at the City Hall, etc. They are unique characters with unique lifestyles, but one thing that they have in common is that they share a love of books and poetry. Whenever they meet, their jokes, laughter, and the sharing of the stories from the books or poems they read exude warmth in the middle of the cold winter setting. Even watching from the other side of the screen, you can actually feel that warmth.

Third, the show has great pacing and a great soundtrack. If you are a researcher who is also looking for a healing drama, this one is for you. Why a researcher? It’s because I was, and still am, convinced that this show has that perfect pace — and there is something magical about it which makes it a perfect watch when you’ve had a hard or exhausting day. If you are indeed a researcher, my proposal is you undertake this most interesting work of finding out why this show has the ability to heal and relax the hearts of its watchers.

Lastly, the show has great life lessons. I found one of the most important messages to be that even with someone’s best interest at heart, your actions can be a mistake from that other person’s viewpoint. It is important to check with the other person if they are receiving your actions in the way you intend them.

Another important message is the necessity of unconditional love. When you are unconditionally loved by someone — be it a parent, a relation, a friend, or a significant other — you can then learn how to love yourself unconditionally. And when you know someone loves you despite your faults, you become able to extend such love to others. Humans are messy; so are our relationships. But when you’re able to love yourself, you can find the courage to forgive.

*fingerhearts @emsel both hands* You're so sweet.

Real life happened, I think. The difficult part is that it kind of happened all at once (e.g., the first lawsuit in my life- I was the claimant, for the record, tenants leaving unpaid utility bills, strange side effects of medication, study, close relative's sudden passing, a close friend confessed their feelings), so I decided to take a break from drama watching as a result. I could not take anything even remotely angsty at that moment.

But things got better bit by bit. And then came a day when I could sit down, and peacefully wrote this article. It was a good day. I didn't think it would get published, but I'm glad it did! Thanks to @guest-beanie and the DB team for publishing and editing this essay! You know I'm always grateful and happy I'm a part of this lovely community.

Just from reading your comments I feel that's a lot to take in, but kudos to you for handling it well :)

I think I may have watched an episode or two of this drama and stopped because I wasn't in the mood for possible melancholy, but since your essay sounds like a healing-through-book-community drama, I will put this down in my watchlist.

Not sure if I have handled them well or not, but I tried to solve them one by one and bit by bit. And it's still in the process.

The dramas I like don't necessary be the ones you do. But when the mood strikes you, I hope you can give this one a try again.

I loved watching this show. Agree about this being a perfect watch after a tiring day. Seo KangJoon and his eyes were magical. I loved his relationship with his little sister.

What I didn't like was the women in Park MinYoung's family. And her decision in the end which felt like she was taking her relationship for granted.

Seo Kangjoon is at his very best in this show, I totally agree with this. I can't imagine anyone playing Perfect Eun-Yeob than him. He is such a gem here. And as you said, the way he portrayed the ML character was nothing short of magical. I feel calmness just by looking at him making coffee, or doing anything in this show, really.

Why you should watch this show? Because it's BRILLIANT! That's it That's the statement.
Well let me tell you my own story and the reason of MY love for this show.
My hometown was a warm and sunny city, I got married and I moved in with my husband in a cold countryside, it was like 75 kilometers away from my hometown but the weather was soooo different, this town was cold and rainy and snowy in winters, even springs were cold in my opinion. and it was a lot of cloudy days so I was a little depressed to be honest, It was like my heart was frozen!
and then I came upon this show and ....Wow ... it was sooooo warm and it was so healing I forgot all the bad feelings, living far from my mom and my sisters, this cold weather and wet grounds all the time and the lack of sunshine suddenly wasn't that important anymore! And they could even be good and enjoyable just like this show.😄
I really love this show and appreciate the work of crew, specially director who created such a beautiful and warm show from a not_that_great_and_extraordinary script. Thank you so much
P.s. is it okay if I say all the actresses and actors were brilliant in their roles even if they're not usually my faves in other shows (cough* PMY* cough) and I was crazily in love with the aunt and ML and his family after the show!
I'm still waiting for seo kangjoon to give me another drama like this! Pleaseeee!

It's so special because we could feel such warmth when the drama is set in winter. It provides such interesting contrast, and highlights the fact that warmth in human souls can penetrate anything.

It's a great drama and definitely a good watch in the cold season.

My issues with the show was the past stories of the leads, it wasn't very clear and some things didn't really make sense.

But the present was great. I liked the characters. I loved the book club with people of all ages.

I love Kdramas that don't place in Seoul but in the countryside. They have a slower rythm that I like.

I agree that somehow, I generally prefer dramas that are set in the countryside. I live in a big city, so my soul craves something calm, quiet, and uncomplicated. Things like these aren't normally found in dramas set in big cities as they seem to not belong there somehow.

Oh, M. You know how very special this drama is to me.

The story, Eun Seob being probably the best male lead ever in dramaland, the warmth of the drama (it's set on winter, but it's such a warm drama!!!), and the music being just another character in the show.

I loved the drama when it aired, and I love it even more with every rewatch I make, which is one every winter. The OST is my comfort music. Whenever a migraine hits, I just turn it on and it helps finding the quiet and calm place where I can recover.

After all my rewatchs I can tell you that to me, above all, the highlight of this drama is the absolute love between Eun Seob and Hwi. The way these two siblings love each other so fiercely, summed up the moment Hwi tells Eun Seob "I loved you since I was born because you are my brother", sums it up. The unbreakable bond between them is so warm!!

Thanks for sharing your love for the drama. Winter is already here. I feel I need to rewatch.

Dear Eaz,

I was about to tag you once I saw the essay posted! But I didn't do that for some reason, and I saw it not long after that that you saw this essay! I knew that you were going to love it (not because of my writing) but because we knew how much we liked this one. Somehow, I think we could relate to one or more of the characters sometimes?

And Eon-seob is the sweetest, isn't he? A long-time hidden crush seems to be my catnip somehow. And SKJ played this character to perfection. And you are right in pointing out the relationship between this pair of siblings; they aren't blood-related, but their relationship is thicker than many blood-related ones.

It is interesting to see how different the dynamics in the relationships between members of a blood-related family and those between members of a non-blood-related family.

Thanks @mmmmm for choosing to promote this drama in such a delightful way. I agree that the bookclub alone is reason enough to watch this drama, as it encapsulates all the elements that make this drama such a powerful watch.

Both the leads have traumatic childhoods and yet on the whole the drama is an uplifting and healing watch due to the combination of the story, the pacing, the setting, the OST and the actors it is simply beautiful.

The town itself is amazing and you can see it is a place of healing for so many of the characters. The bright boy who went to a top university but returned to his home town because he could not imagine anywhere better to live and use his skills says it all.

The instrumentals from this OST are my go to soundtrack to evoke the peace I need to get through the frustrating commute to work.

Your comment is spot-on, Mother Bean. I read all the comments here the other day (but I wasn't in the place to reply then), and I came to the conclusion that what makes this show different from many shows is its gentleness. The way the story is written, though heart-breaking in some scenes, all the characters were written with gentleness. The characters were portrayed with gentleness. The soundtrack is also gentle and soothing. There is so much gentleness in this show that makes it healing and uplifting. I thought carefully about this and couldn't think of any show that comes close to this level of gentleness in storytelling. For me, this distinguishes it from the rest.

In the ever fast-paced world, I hope we can recover or bring back gentleness. It's normally slow, but it's usually much better than something that is fast and superficial.

Thank you for writing about this show, @mmmmm. To date, I've seen 180 Kdramas (yep, I keep a list), and this is easily one of my favorites... Rewatched it several times, even. And I still play the soundtrack, especially the instrumental.❤️

Everything you wrote is spot-on! I would add that the show has gorgeous cinematography, and wonderful use of ambient sound... It adds so much to the watching experience. I feel like I'm transported into the drama's world everytime I watch it.

Beautiful show, beautiful article @mmmmm !
This was surprisingly interesting to watch, once I stumbled across it. I admit I started because the FL is a cellist - lol! That this fact was actually obsolete in the end didn’t really matter. I really enjoyed watching the found family book club, but strangely found the plot around her aunt and mom really fascinating, too. Plus I appreciated tropes like “being forced to live together”, lol! I will definitely rewatch this.

I am happy to learn that you started it because of something, but stayed because of something else! 😅 In fact, I FORGOT that she was a cellist after I watched the show for a while (I got to remember it again later on of course). The things that happened and people of that town were so interesting I didn't spare a moment to remember what the FL used to do before she came to this town this time. And I agree with you, I think the plot around the mom and the aunt is very captivating. That led me to write that first important message in the last part of my essay.

I think I will give it another try one day. I’m no stranger to slower drama and slice of life dramas—which this drama is both of those things— but I think the pace of this one definitely took me off guard because it feels EVEN SLOWER than the slow dramas I’m used to 😅😅

Though the slower pace can be a challenge, I enjoyed this drama quite a bit and am happy to see you championing it. The book club was probably my favorite of everything you mentioned. But I also agree that the lessons it teaches are pretty valuable. The one drawback for me was how passive Eun Seok is. It drives me crazy! I’m not necessarily an advocate for the alpha male, but he took beta to the extreme. Of course that is just a personal opinion of mine.

I'm happy to learn that you quite enjoyed this drama. I completely understand that Eon-seob may be considered super beta by some. But for me, the FL was broken before the end of the show, and it was Eon-seob who was always there for her (with or without her knowing). To me, he is the one who provided a respite for her, and is the one who loves and accepts her unconditionally. That is what she truly needed to move on. And it's super sweet and believable to me since he is also loved unconditionally from his family.

@mmmmm thank you for writing this. It's the perfect time of year for this drama. This is one of my top favourites not simply because it is a beautiful and gently paced, but because it made me question alot of things. My opinion of the characters flipped as the drama told it's story. And one I thought inconsequential actually grounded the whole thing.

The aunt is probably my favourist drama character ever. What a role ! And Moon Jeong-Hee played all that complexity behind a pair of sunglasses.

I can't agree more with your comment, Margo! (Why is your lip gloss resilient, btw?)

I read your comment a while back, and you are actually the person who made me realize the reason behind my love for this drama. It's actually in your words: Gentleness. It is such a gentle show, something I rarely see in many dramas and real life these days. Gentleness is what makes me appreciate the past a little more than the present because it was more abundant in the past for me. There was more gentleness in how people dealt with one another in the past, gentleness in relationships, gentleness in almost everything.

And yes to your last point. To think that she delivered even when we couldn't see her eyes 80% of the time she appeared on the screen! What a marvelous actress she is!

Congratulations @mmmmm on being published and for your lovely WEATHER essay. I think you covered all the bases.

(Something that interests me are the folks who discover Seo Kang-joon (a favorite of mine) for the first time in WEATHER. If they start to go back through his work to let’s say KBS’s ARE YOU HUMAN TOO? (2018) (Viki US) they discover the sweet SKJ in WEATHER is quite capable of doing “nasty” and are they shocked at all.)

OCN’s WATCHER (2019) (Viki US) is my favorite SKJ drama. I thought the three lead format (also with Han Seok-kyu and Kim Hyun-joo) was perfect for SKJ because he didn’t have to carry the whole load and he was in full ‘kick-ass’ mode which I loved. His physicality (ie fighting) was fantastic.

I concur. AYHT was my first SKJ drama and I loved it. He was great in the dual roles of Nam Shin and Nam Shin III. I then followed him to the excellent THE THIRD CHARM (2018), WATCHER (2019) and of course WEATHER (2020). GRID (2022) was not an option for me because it aired on Disney+. Then he was off to the military.
I eagerly await news of what his first post military drama or project will be.

I somehow avoided anything that has SKJ in it besides Weather. He is extremely perfect in this role, I think I was afraid of seeing him in other roles. Weather is so good that if you told me there were those characters and that town somewhere on this globe, I would have believed you.

Let’s see what SKJ decides as his first post military project. If it is the right project maybe you can tippy toe in for a look. 😊
I compare the townspeople in WEATHER with their exact opposite in the town in (the lamented) SUMMER STRIKE (2022). In SS Siwan played the sweet burdened ML in a lovely coastal town but he was surrounded by the most awful people. I shipped the whole lot to a deserted island to learn how to be human.

@mmmmm I’ve been thinking of you as you seem missing in action - and voila, comes this piece.

This drama is a unique drama as no others portray the cold winter as ‘warmly’ as it does. Amidst all the white snow and cold weather, the community especially the book club anchors the heart and soul of this drama - the dark past of our leads notwithstanding!

I was never a fan of Seo Kang-joon until his Eun-seob here. He nails this introvert and vulnerable character. This led me to watch The Third Charm and Watcher - he’s now on my approved list.

Together with Healer, this might be the two Park Min-young dramas that I like. She’s too vanilla to my taste and I wish she could pick more challenging roles instead playing the same again and again.

Totally agreed with other Beanies’ comments that Moon Jung-hee as the FL’s aunt and Kim Han-hee as the ML’s sister are the two standout. This is also where I discovered Lee Jae-wook, thinking he’s a late twenty actor when he was much younger then.

I have to admit that I didn’t finish the last two episodes due to the negativity expressed by so many - but perhaps it’s time to close this off. If anything, the snow and the OST alone are reasons enough to watch When The Weather Is Fine.

I'm not sure how others define "healing" or if it is supposed to be defined anyway. But because you asked, I think healing for me involves a lot of likable characters and an abundant amount of gentleness in the way each character was written. There is also so much warmth in the town in winter. I don't know if and how all these things are related, but it soothes one's heart watching so many likable characters like and spend quality time with one another.
