Park Min-young rejects Lee Yi-kyung in Please Marry My Husband

The first teaser has come out for tvN’s new revenge fantasy Please Marry My Husband, focusing on our central character played by Park Min-young (Love in Contract) and giving us the quick rundown on her backstory.

In a mockumentary style teaser akin to reality dating shows, we meet our heroine Kang Ji-won (Park Min-young) through an interview, where she announces that she will not select X – referring to her husband Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X).

In the captions, we read the interviewer’s next question: “What is the reason for your decision?” And a teary-eyed Ji-won reveals that, “I was murdered by my husband and my best friend.”

Flashing back to that terrible night, we see that Ji-won – who was battling cancer – had witnessed Park Min-hwan (Lee Yi-kyung) in bed with her so-called bestie Song Ha-yoon (Oh! Young-shim). A fight had then ensued, tragically ending with Ji-won breathing her last.

As the teaser comes to a close, Ji-won turns to face the camera with new resolve, and we know that this is just the beginning to our drama’s story. With the help of a magical little time-slip ten years into the past, our heroine will wake up to a time when she was not yet married – all her memories intact, of course. This means she will now be able to get her sweet, sweet revenge and choose a new path for her future – presumably including our leading man Na In-woo (Longing for You).

On the production side, directing for the webnovel adaptation is helmed by PD Park Won-gook (Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist, Special Labor Inspector Jo), with scripts penned by Shin Yoo-dam (Awaken). Airing in tvN’s Monday-Tuesday slot, Please Marry My Husband will be kickstarting the new year with a January 1 premiere.

The comparisons to PMR are going to be inevitable, they are both based on popular webcomics, the storylines are similar and they both use isekai-esque time travel as a plot device.

This one could be a bigger hit due to having more well known stars, a bigger budget and airing on a bigger network.

PMR has the makings of cult classic written all over it, im curious to see how Marry my husband will stack up.

Luckily both will not be airing simultaneously. For PMR fans this drama will have “bigger” shoes to fill. 🤣 You’re right of course that since this drama has everything PMR but bigger it will indeed interesting to seek how it measures up.
Personally I have grave reservations against anything being called “cult” or “classic” but for PMR it seems natural and apt.

imo Marry My Husband makes PMR look like Dr. Zhivago

I confess to being somewhat uninterested in this because of PMR. 😀 But the tone of the teaser is engaging enough to overcome that. Perhaps drama will also be engaging enough despite Park Min-young. Sigh, it is difficult to watch a drama if the lead is off-putting. While I am not expecting Healer level interest, Contract Marriage level tolerance should suffice.

This is something I would have to see myself because I really don't know what to think about this. I've read the webtoon so a part of me will definitely be thinking about how it compares. I didn't really see Park Min Young as this character (Han Hyo Joo is still my fancast haha) but then I learned she apparently lost a bunch of weight to portray the role and I was like "okay, dedication, maybe I should try to be open minded" and now seeing this, it's not exactly gripping me and I don't know if it's just bias or genuinely not intriguing to someone who already knows what happens or at least me.

I do think it's kinda interesting that this drama won't just be compared to the actual webtoon it's based on but to Perfect Marriage Revenge. Not just the story but how it's adapted.

In my head it was Shin Hye Sun or Lee Da Hee or maybe Seo Ye Ji. But I would also see Han Hyo Joo in it. The character makes me think of actresses with strong "badass energy".

Tbh, I never imagined both stories would be compared until now. I thought they were pretty different. And the little I saw of PMR adaptation makes me think that they really have nothing in common. Just the time slip/revenge.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily compare them but I know others would since it's already started.

I don't know that many actors and actresses by name haha.
I've only seen Son Ye Ji in Lawless Lawyer (didn't even know her name at the time). It's kinda hard for me to imagine her down trodden and being a pushover or introverted.

Shin Hye Sun, is she from See You in My 19th Life? I haven't seen any of her projects in their entirety, only clips or trailers. From the little I've seen, I can see it. She can do the sad & introverted as well as confident & sharp, fiery eyes

But now that I think about it, maybe the comparison makes sense. Even tho Twinkling Watermelon and My Perfect Stranger are totally different shows, I started comparing them because of the time travel and family dynamics.
So I think people will do the same with PMR and this new drama, even if they're actually different.

Yes, that's Shin Hye Sun.
And Lee Da Hee is the one from Island, Love is for Suckers, Search WWW, etc.
Seo Ye Ji had that vibe in the movie 'Recall' so I can imagine her for this role. But I would vote for Shin Hye Sun first (I'm acting like this is the Cast Away post lol).

I've only seen Lee Da Hee in Island, The Beauty Inside, and guest appareances on Running Man haha

As everybody already said the storyline is similar to Perfect Marriage Revenge. I love PMR and I adore how it zips through the makjang storylines. I may skip this since I am not a big fan of the leads and not really interested to watch another drama with similar storyline. I will only end up comparing it to PMR. I hope it does well though.

The press reports are mostly about Park Min-Young "method acting" to lose so much weight (to 74 pounds) that it is shocking. However, a cynic would call this a diversion comeback role to off-set her ongoing ex-BF scandal. She had been out of the public eye for more than 9 months.

In February, 2023 she was summoned as a witness by prosecutors investigating Kang Jong-hyun, her ex-boyfriend and a businessman known to be the de-facto owner of the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Bithumb, over embezzlement charges, fraudulent transactions and dereliction of duty. The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office questioned Park on Monday over possible involvement in Kang’s alleged crimes, probing whether she obtained profits from any illegal transactions made by the company or its affiliates. It was reported that at least one of her family members was a director and officer of the company.

I don't really know what to say about the financial/criminal scandal that she's dealing with, but 74 pounds???? Note to those writing the press reports you mentioned: that's not method acting, that's an eating disorder, which she may have already been dealing with anyway.

I agree this is worrying. She was already way too thin in Love in contract.

Yeah, I really don’t know why she’d “choose” to lose 74 pounds for a brief cancer patient scene that’s only at the very beginning of her show. I’m genuinely worried about the real state of her health.

The report is 37kg which is around 81lbs, which is still dangerously underweight.

There is no way that viewers won't comment on how skinny she looks. It looks like her or the company's PR team is just using the method acting excuse to explain away her dangerously-skinny appearance (probably due to stress or eating disorder) without knowing that her character will go back in time to a younger, pre-cancer her.

Hook Entertainment is likely a mess now since Lee Seung-gi sued it and all their top stars have left it.

I assume she lost the weight under the watch of a doctor and nutritionist so it was somewhat "safe". And if it wasn't, I'm not sure why she would do it if she were already super skinny.

I was surprised she lost weight for the role cause I just assumed they would use clothes, makeup, staging, and lighting to make her look sickly or downtrodden.

I can't imagine any doctor or nutritionist approving of someone losing so much weight that they become severely underweight.

Christian Bale lost alot of weight, a scary looking amount, for his role in The Machinist (I think that's what it was called). Tom Hanks lost weight for Cast Away (but then developed some kind of illness or disorder I think).

There's been other cases but I don't remember which. Did Anne Hathaway lose weight for Les Miserables?

Song Hye kyo (I think that's her name) lost weight for The Glory. No idea how much she lost but yeah.

The webtoon was basically the heroine winning victory after victory with zero pushback from the villains. I was just reading it for the romance and the genuinely wholesome side stories of the supporting characters. So I hope the drama doesn’t cut out ppl like the ML’s sister, her older colleague, etc. in favour of a revenge story that wasn’t even that interesting. Or maybe they should go the PMR route since the villains are cartoonish anyways.

In my most honest and sincere opinion, Park Min-young should have been rejecting Na In-woo instead of Lee Yi-kyung.
That's the major cons I'm having with this drama.
Na In-woo shines the most when he's not opposing anyone. If he's a romantic lead, let him be the lead. No SML out to provide angst to the relationship. Give the SML a relationship from the start that will never have to tie into that of the leads.
I don't see him heading a romance themed drama. And playing opposite Lee Yi-kyung... I can't count how many times I cringed in Longing For You, I fear I'll be doing that all again if there has been no improvement from LFY.

And if it's like the webcomic, his character is super bland and boring. I don't think he'll elevate the material in any way.
