A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 4

It’s a good day to return from our week-long break! This week is all about curse-breaking hijinks, obliviousness to developing romantic feelings, getting rid of phobias, and a surprising identity reveal.

EPISODE 4

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 4

My weekly dose of adorableness is back! Yaay! Last we saw of them, Seo-won and Hae-na became close enough to make plans to attend their colleagues’ wedding together. Like a girl on her first date, Seo-won spends the morning of the wedding going through several outfits (I can watch him change outfits all day!), and making sure his car is all comfortable for the drive. We get the Yellow Umbrella of Swoon moment to ward off the third-wheeling Chae-ah, and our OTP finally sets off for the wedding.

But here’s the kicker: Seo-won is a novice driver! Hehe. Hae-na attempts to play some music to diffuse the awkwardness in the car, but the audio of a “How to look cool while driving” tutorial plays instead. The mood instantly shifts from awkwardness to secondhand embarrassment, and it gets worse when Yul calls to inform Hae-na to flee for her life because his uncle just got his license. Loool.

With Seo-won, this is a case of when it rains it pours — and it actually starts raining, but he can’t even follow the navigation system. Oh dear! A driving genius, Seo-won is not. But I mean, the heavens are fair, right? A man cannot have it all. Hae-na is left to clutch her seatbelt while their trip gets rerouted multiple times. But somehow, they manage to make it to the venue in time for the ceremony. Phew!

Seo-won makes up for the embarrassing trip by being all swoony in fixing Hae-na’s hairpin. He also reaffirms his singing genius by being in charge of the congratulatory song. Pfft. Luckily for Hae-na, she is spared the horror of a return trip with Seo-won. That honor is snatched up by Chae-ah — who arrives just in time for the buffet (my best part of a wedding ceremony to be honest), and drags Seo-won out to give her a ride home.

Hae-na gets to ride home with Bo-gyeom instead. But first, they stop by the beach and as always, Bo-gyeom makes deep remarks disguised as normal comments. This time, he talks about how the moon moves towards the ocean and gets pulled away from it regardless of its will. “If you were the moon, would you feel that it’s unfair?” he asks, and Hae-na replies that not moving at all would be boring.

Whether he finds her answer satisfactory or not, Bo-gyeom doesn’t say. Instead, he mutters to himself that Hae-na will be pulled away from [Seo-won] sooner than she thinks, regardless of her will. “Just like me,” he concludes. Hmmm. We get a flashback of Hae-na in a Joseon-like setting crying over a bloodied and seemingly dead Seo-won. And as we return to the present, we see Bo-gyeom’s true form as revealed by his shadow on the beach: he is a tiger! Bo-gyeom is actually a spirit being! Okay, does he have anything to do with Hae-na’s curse?

Speaking of which, now that the wedding business is concluded, it’s time to resume Operation Break Hae-na’s Curse. Yul is recruited for the operation, and the plan is simple: he sneaks Hae-na in dog form into Seo-won’s room, and while Seo-won is asleep, Hae-na steals a kiss and breaks the curse. There is no plan B, but honestly this is simple enough. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

For starters, Seo-won refuses to go to bed on time. Heh. When he falls asleep, Hae-na is sneaked into his bed, but all she can think about are the heart fluttering moments between them since they got close. Once again, I’m grateful for the illogical and unserious tone the show has set up from the beginning, because Hae-na is just a few inches away from Seo-won’s lips and I’m not thinking, “get that woman away from him!” Instead, I’m all, “Miss ma’am, kiss him already and break that curse!”

Hae-na finally kisses Seo-won and… doesn’t transform back into human. What? To make matters worse, Seo-won wakes up to a dog in his bed and screams bloody murder. Ha! Thankfully, Hae-na scoots out real fast and Yul is on hand to assure his uncle that he just had a “dog” dream (a bad/nonsensical dream in Korean is called a “dog” dream).

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 4

A refresher course on Hae-na’s family dog curse: 1) it is activated after they kiss someone; 2) the curse is broken when they kiss the person again in dog form — but the person has to be fully alert during the kiss, and this is why Hae-na did not transform after kissing a sleeping Seo-won. On the bright side, after breaking the curse, they can kiss the person as many times as they like without turning into a dog. The curse only activates again when they kiss someone else.

With an upcoming overnight school trip, Hae-na has never felt more pressured to break the curse. But how does she kiss a fully alert Seo-won as a dog when he is scared of dogs? “How would you feel if you saw a tiger? That’s how dogs are to me,” Seo-won tells Hae-na. Unlike other people who are vocal about their fear and need for help in scary situations, Seo-won says that he falls apart by himself whenever something like that happens to him.

Now Hae-na is resolved to help Seo-won get over his fear of dogs — and not just because of the curse. “I am a teacher and it’s my job to help students who need help,” she says to her sister. “Is he a student?” Yoo-ra teases in reply. But that’s not the point, according to Hae-na. Of course, it isn’t. Lol. Hae-na remains in denial about her growing feelings for Seo-won, but just like the rest of us, Yoo-ra has already noticed. (By the way, I find it hilarious how Yoo-ra just calls Seo-won “Math.”)

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 4

Hae-na doesn’t have a concrete plan to help Seo-won get over his fear of dogs. She just asks to meet him outside the school for now, and they can wing it along the way. Seo-won is all up for spending more time with Hae-na — he just has to quell his imagination of a horde of dogs running up to them on their “date.” Heh. They start with sustaining a few seconds of interactions with caged dogs, and things are looking pretty good. Until they settle down in the park, and a dog breaks free from its owner. Oh no!

Seo-won has a flashback to the time a big dog jumped to attack him when he was ten years old. In the present, he panics, but in one sweeping movement, Hae-na hides them away from the dog’s sight with her Jacket of Comfort. “Think of this as our home. The most peaceful and safest place in the world,” she says to Seo-won — who can’t take his eyes off her reassuring smile. Awwww. We’re just going to be ending each week with swoon-worthy moments now, aren’t we?

If there’s one thing I like about this drama, it’s how the characters serve as a source of comfort and protection to each other — from Seo-won finding solace in Hae-na when he’s faced with his dog issues, to Yul keeping Hae-na’s transformation secret and reassuring her that her “bizarre situation” doesn’t bother him. And of course, there’s Yoo-ra, who gently comforted the dog-form Hae-na as she whimpered after the failed transformation attempt at Seo-won’s — by far my favorite moment this week.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 4

Hae-na and Yoo-ra’s sisterly interaction is always a delight to watch, and I love how they’ve roped Yul into their little crew. The other member of the crew is their childhood friend and veterinarian, SONG WOO-TAEK (Jo Jin-se) — who is also in the know about their dog secret. Woo-taek and Yoo-ra are so comfortable around each other like an old couple, and I need them to get together at some point. I mean, he already kissed her when they were kids, so there’s no issue of a curse with them now.

Yoo-ra’s hesitation to date probably stems from the PTSD of her ex hiding a camera to film her transformation. It’s also why the sisters can’t easily trust anyone with their secret. But so far, Woo-taek and Yul have proven to be trustworthy, so maybe Hae-na can take a step of faith and just tell Seo-won the truth. Who knows? Maybe the key to overcoming Seo-won’s dog phobia lies in the knowledge that the woman he likes has a dog-rella transformation every night. Heh.

First of all, let me say this - one episode every two weeks is a sure fire way to get me to wait to binge. I am not there yet, I love the leads here, just sayin'. I really needed the "Previously on AGDTBAD....." part to remember where we ended eons ago.

Seo Won driving the car for the first time was riotous. Yul is adorable. I hope he plays a bigger part in the story going forward. As gorgeous as CEW is, and this is prolly not going to be a popular opinion, watching him is almost like watching a model striking poses than an actor acting

I'm with you on the binge plan. I haven't watched this episode yet, and now I've just realised there will be another LONG wait before the next.

The "previously on.." part feels very webtoon too. So, who knows, perhaps they are just matching the pace and format a little too well?

CEW did feel a little more comfortable in Island (which I do not recommend watching for the plot because Writer-nim forgot about creating a storyline with that one; the manhwa made more sense) where he was in a comedic/action role. I'm starting to get a sense that it is a lot easier to get comfortable with the camera when you actually have to do something (such as jumping around with a sword, as per Island) and that it takes a lot more skills and camera-confidence as an actor to look natural while doing little... if I'm making sense. But, I'll still be supporting his efforts from afar when I'll be binging. After all, the only way to get better at anything is to practice, right? Hwaiting, Eun-woo-sshi!

Operation Sleeping Beauty Kiss was hilarious if unsuccessful. I'm glad the team had the foresight to pack a change of clothes, underwear included. Having this trio of eager helpers is going to make Hae-na's quest to end the curse even more fun. I feel like we don’t often see realistic yet loving sibling relationships on dramas, and Hae-na and Yoo-ra capture that perfectly.

Poor Seo-won really struggles setting boundaries with the SFL, but he's so disinterested in her that her presence doesn't bother me except that it takes away screen time from better characters. Also, you’d hope Hae-na would realize after the "How to look cool while driving" how much Seo-won's trying to make a good impression on her.

Once again, their sweet consideration of each other -- the coat "house" and her soothing voice 🥰 -- takes all the cakes. Not sure what to think of Bo-gyeom’s tiger alter ego or foreboding predictions, but I hope we don’t get too much angst in this cute show.

This episode was fun to watch as Seowon put so much effort in trying to be cool while driving even though he's a novice driver, driving on the expressway for the first time and Yul telling Haena to get out of the car! All of the actors were great and love the relationship between Seowon & Yul and Haena & her sister! Downside is there is a baseball game again next week so we won't be able to see episode 5 until 2 weeks from now. MBC really messed up on te scheduling for this drama, once a week was painful but canceling an episode due to a baseball is such a pain!

Thanks @unit for the weecap.
The nephew brings comedy gold every episode; his phone call telling her to save herself and leave the car and then sitting on his uncle to block her escape from the room, were this week’s highlights. I loved the gang going all in on the operation with their outfits to get the kiss sorted.

I know it’s supposed to be funny new learners not knowing how to drive on multi lane carriage ways or how to take exits but surely a decent driving instructor would cover all that before the test these days.

Let’s hope this is the last of the breaks in transmission.

Even though she says she hasn't changed who her crush is, we can all see that she was way more excited to spend time with Seowon than she was about going with Bogyeom to see that very romantic-looking sunset at the beach; she really is the only one that hasn't noticed, huh?
Although I hate the schedule right now, I love the fact that I can rewatch this drama over and over and I still laugh and giggle with each scene. It's really turning into my comfort drama, the whole cast is great, the coloring and the music, everything is perfect, ugh i love it so much, please MBC give me more episodes !!!!

I didn't understand why they didn't recruit Yul before. So I'm happy they finally did it. The curse was clear : he must kiss her in her dog form, not the opposite, so the result of their mission was obvious (as well as how fake was the dog 😅).

For the episode, it wasn't very entertaining. They didn't spend so much time together at the wedding (did she take the gift?), the holding hand scene was cute but the parking wasn't that far from the entrance of the building.

I really like the sisters together. Yoo-Ra is sincerely worried for her sister and cares about her.

At least, there is no doubts about their feelings. They just need to say it to each other!

I just start this show smiling and the smile never leaves. It’s not anything special, but still enjoyable. Wish CEW would move his face more. Show me some wrinkles. I know he probably makes more money being a commercial model, and his face needs to stay perfect, but it makes for very little depth in his character. But I guess I’m not watching this for depth. I have My Dearest for that.

i literally SCREAMED when they brought up the school trip!!! I was praying so that hard it'll make it to the adaptation AND IT DID OHMYGOD I cant WAIT for the pure chaos!

Aside from that, it just occurred to me how perfect the casting is for our main leads (excluding woo-taek, he wasn't a part of the webtoon so I don't know his purpose here) and gyu-young is embodying Hae-na really well.

I don’t want to speculate too much here because not everyone has read the webtoon, but I really like the addition of Woo-taek! It’s nice that the sisters have an outside-the-curse confidant and helper, and I assume he’s also there to be a stark contrast to Yoo-na’s ex-boyfriend. Plus, his life has been shaped by the curse at least as much as theirs, since I’m assuming it had something to do with why he became a vet. I really love him and can’t wait for Yoo-na to realize that she already has someone who accepts her for who she is and isn’t a total creep, like her ex.

I really enjoy the inclusion of Woo-taek. In the webtoon, feel like the older sister was more of a loner who seemed resigned to singlehood after being hurt (I'm only 75% of the way through the webtoon). I like seeing the sis have a friend here who could possibly end up a romantic interest. And we get an extra person to help out Hae-na especially since the curse in the drama is more difficult and dangerous than the version in the webtoon.

To be honest this show was not very high on my list of dramas to watch. It has turned out to be very entertaining and a much needed bit of escapism.

The FL is awesome in this role, the dog scenes leave me in stitches and her band of co conspirators is hilarious. My only niggle is that the ML is coming across a bit robotic. I’m wondering how much of that is Cha Eun Woo trying to embrace the character’s aloofness or a need to improve his acting skills.

Escapism is the right word! Totally watching this in brains off, swoon on mode, lol. Also found the ML a bit clunky, but it’s also endearing. Hoping while he’s warming up more to the FL that this will sort itself out!

I also really enjoy the cinematography of this: all the bright colors, the shots in the meticulously styled homes (that cozy kitchen of the sisters, all the ultramarines for Math and Yul, the clothing, etc.) All in all, it’s pretty.

It’s just a sweet and simple story and the leads are endearing. I like all the characters so far.
The show suffers due to one episode a week format and also next episode airs in 14 days said Viki. Ouch.
I am rooting for the second leads too. They make such a great team.
The sisters are sweet together. I love how she keeps brushing her hair in anticipation for her turning to dog. Lol.
CEW can loosen up a little. I have seen him do better. It’s hard to believe he is a school teacher though. He just looks like a student!

Where can I get a shadow like Bo-gyeom’s? That thing is pretty legit.

I continue to find this fun and cute, and that’s really all I need from it. I like that Seo-won is shown to be so competent in so many areas, but also a little socially clueless and bad at other things. I love the relationship between the sisters, and the one they have with their childhood friend. I like that we’re getting hints of who Bo-gyeom might really be, and that they are keeping his mysterious interactions occasional, so that they don’t become annoying.

I really liked Bo-gyeom’s conversation with Hae-na. It’s starting to set up his motivation a little, though the drama isn’t making it super clear in which direction (yet). Would you want to be pushed and pulled by something that you’re barely aware of? It makes the whole story seem fated but at the same time arbitrary, and I’m really enjoying how they are introducing that idea.

I was worried that I was going to end up feeling like there was something missing from this drama, because that’s how I felt about 19th Life and I hadn’t even read that webtoon at the time, but I’m having a great time with this. Yul continues to be a gem, and my favorite moments are the times when all of our characters reassure each other that they are not as weird as they think.

After a long wait and a long re-introduction, the series gets to the crux of matter: the curse is not that simple. Hae-na is learning that it is harder to lift than the fear of confessing your feelings to your crush. We also learn from Yu-Na’s dating history that this happens with every new beau . . . and sometimes takes bribery to get a dog kiss. I do find Yu-Na and Woo-Taek are the perfect support team as they try to plan counter-measures to help Hae-Na. I also liked Dog Ma (pun intended) is the librarian of knowledge but both daughters are afraid of her bite. I do wonder if the curse can be permanently lifted or does one have to go through a nightly routine even if one is married.

I thought the wedding arc was the least compelling part of the episode. Adding anxiety driving to Seo-Won’s plate seemed like overload - - an unnecessary attribute. If it was a way to push women away from him, it did not work.

Hae-Na is having genuine feelings for Seo-Won and they are becoming mutual. Bo-Gyeom’s dark monologue on the beach continues to foreshadow his mission to break a part the couple by any means. I don’t think it is jealousy at this point - - - I think it could be their past life romance is what caused the curse - - - and a revival of it in present day could make it worse (perhaps deadly). Again, I don't like this trope in this kind of rom-com.

Park Gyu-Young is really pouring on the Aegyo with cute displays of affection often expressed through a cute voice, changes to speech, facial expressions, or gestures. This is a real big trend recently with Han Ji Min and Park Eun-Bin acting very cute, too in their current shows.

Oh, one more thing, as a psychologist: exposure is going to be the most effective treatment for specific phobia! The only thing is you want the person to stay in the situation for 30 min to allow habituation to occur, and you also don't want to give the person a countdown to when will be over (that reinforces the idea that the anxiety is intolerable and encourages "white knuckling"). Hae-na seemed to be doing more graded exposure with having him in front of a dog in a window, which is very smart.

This show is such a feel-good happy pill, I'm only sad MBC has totally destroyed its scheduling. But Haena and Seowon are cute as pie together, and I love the slow but steady progress in their relationship. He has always liked her, but now he's starting to trust her too, while she is falling for him yet having no idea what's going on. Meanwhile, Yuna, Wootaek, and Yul are bringing the laughs.

Gyuyoung is always great, but I thought Eunwoo did a lovely job with the vulnerability mixed with awe for Haena at the end there. I can't wait for episode 5 (airing in roughly three years), since we'll finally confront the bullying storyline and probably bring up more of his past.

Yeah, that's what I find really interesting in this case - he's not the most emotive actor for sure, but chemistry is clearly there, I personally can easily SEE that SW likes HN very much. I mean, I called it after the first episodes - BEFORE the show itself revealed as much. Script helps as well - I've already praised it few times for achieving a rare feat of writing a believable stoic introvert character - but he's not THAT bad himself either. There's still a room for growth ofc, but I think it's his best loverboy role to date, he actually seems INTO IT for once. Maybe it's the case of right costar magic, which sometimes can do real wonders. Or maybe I'm a little biased as an introvert with a serious case of RBF myself (no botox/PS involved, my face simply does not move much by default, and when I make a conscious effort to do some expression it usually comes out weird and/or creepy).

This show is way too cute and heartwarming for its atrocious airing schedule, shame on you, MBC!

SW keeps being endearing. What to wear pre-date montage, awww! Cool driving lessons, bwahaha! Nightmarish imagination of how their dog phobia treatment meetings would look like, omg! Poor guy, he's trying SO HARD yet the object of his super obvious affection remains totally clueless. And not just about HIS crush, but her own rapidly growing feelings as well. Which I find somewhat unrealistic - she was shown in love before, what's with this naive "is this a heart attack?" nonsense, girl? Fine, he's not her type, we've been informed, but to actually dismiss the possibility just because of that? When all signs are there in huge neon caps letters? Hmmm. Guess thick-skulled in romance trait inevitably comes with being a kdrama FL. I did rofl when she told him her convoluted reasoning of why she wants to heal his phobia - to his smitten brain that totally sounded like "I want to spend more time with you" tho, so stupidly sweet))) See, drama misunderstandings can be non-frustrating too! Too bad it doesn't happen often... And I hope we are NOT in for a long angst when he KNOWS and probably thinks all her actions were curse-driven, when it's not only that anymore. History teacher being all cryptic for no reason is already enough. Sand shadow CGI was pretty tho. Tiger, hmm. Another semi-retired mountain god?

SFL is such a waste of screentime, honestly - character is awful, actress is NOT doing even a passable job either... Can't we do away with her completely? I'd rather we focus on good parts instead - OTP going on non-date dates, YR and WT being a dynamic duo (just date already!), Yul being super nice and helpful for a teenager and so on.

Curse-lifting kiss having a consent rule caught me off-guard, but it makes sense, I guess. Still, HN should keep this going - I mean, kissing SW with doggie ears on, pretty sure this will wonderfully stimulate him to overcome his dog fear^^ Can't help but wonder how he'd react if that DID work and boy woke up not to a horror of puppy smooching him, but his crush doing so. Naked. In his very bed in the middle of the night. Someone should write a fanfic about it...

P.S. Whoa, it's been a while since I've seen a drama ML getting red hot jealous and NOT making a scene as result.

P.P.S. It's hilarious how SW keeps throwing his friend - and love rival - under the bus EVERY SINGLE TIME he needs an excuse to hang out with HN))) "He's busy with papers and can't go", "he's a sleepyhead that's always late to meetings" etc.

We need the worshipping-an-angel-and-then-some expression on SW - and it did not materialise. Sigh.

It took me awhile to reconcile myself to AGDTBAD being what it is, but I've finally come around. The trick, for me, was to class it among C-dramas, not K-dramas. C-drama rom-coms tend to be entirely brainless. You're supposed to not put any mental effort into the premise, just enjoy it for what it is.

Thanks for summing up the episode so well @unit! This show has so much potential but for some reason I am only standing at the edge of mindless, romantic giddyness but I haven't crossed the threshold.

Things I loved this episode:

Yul begging Hae-na to escape that car if she loves her life (too hilarious)
Seo-won learning to look cool driving for Hae-na (too adorable)
Hae-na using her jacket to make a home to protect Seo-won ( too endearing)
Yul is now part of the team on a mission to get that kiss (too sweet)
Seo-won and Hae-na holding hands, and generally getting close to each other (too heart fluttering)

But just as I start to get on my giddy romantic high other things about the show drag me down:

After a two week wait, I felt cheated that one third of the show was a recap of the previous episode. I wanted more new content.

The lighting choices are distracting. I know the intent is make it feel romantic but it takes away from moment. In the previous episode I ignored the lights going magenta suddenly as our leads connected at the bus stop. This episode, no matter how hard I tried to enjoy Seo-won's singing, I kept getting distracted by the wall sconces short-circuiting ...I mean twinkling.

Like others said, I need some more emotion out of Seo-won. More wistfulness and longing when he gazes at Hae-na. But to his credit, I did feel his terror as that dog ran to him in the park.

Finally, another two week wait to see another episode! They are ruining the momentum.

Overall I like the show though. Will keep watching it because I feel like it has all the fixings to take me on happy, cotton candy-sweet high

I am loving this show. Both the leads are adorable with awesome chemistry. The dog is the cutest and I am in love with Seowon. He is such a cutie. Eunwoo is playing this character so well.

The way Seowon changes expression from smiley happy to fear in a seconds during the end of episode. Good job Eunwoo.

It's interesting reading other people's comments. I enjoyed this episode and am still really loving the drama but somehow I didn't enjoy ep 4 as much as eps 1 - 3. Maybe the car stuff was a bit childish for me, and I'm getting slightly sick of the ML's rabbit in the headlights look. I would like to see more of the confident ML, e.g. when he protected the FL against the bullying students.

I've decided to add this drama to my currently watching list, and it's a charming riot so far.
