The Kidnapping Day: Episode 7
by solstices
Our sharp-witted heroine has begun recruiting useful allies into her circle, capitalizing on her persuasion and people skills to draw them in. Joining hands with others may bring her one step closer to escaping captivity, but there’s still the matter of her missing memories — and one very persistent investor.
EPISODE 7
When Myung-joon flubs a line in his panic, Ro-hee takes over the call with lawyer Taek-kyun. Assertive as always, she isn’t above retaliating with a bit of sass — “I’m doing all right for a dead person,” ha — and she stands firm on her demands. Grand-uncle Choi has to cough up 30 billion won, even if that means liquidating all of Professor Choi’s assets. Oh, and one last thing: Taek-kyun has to say that the kidnapper he spoke to was a woman.
Needless to say, Taek-kyun’s words are met with impotent rage (courtesy of Grand-uncle Choi) and wary suspicion (courtesy of Jaden). They can’t risk having the kidnapper make good on the threat to upload proof that Ro-hee is alive and well, since they — and the project — would be done for once it spreads like wildfire on social media.
Elsewhere, Hye-eun finally shows up at the police station for questioning. Pulling off her scarf to reveal the scar on her neck, Hye-eun confesses the truth to Sang-yoon — she had been infected with AIDS due to Cheol-won’s attack. When all attempts at treatment failed, Chairman Choi eventually dissolved her adoption, replacing her with Professor Choi. Hye-eun is sure she wasn’t the only abandoned child — given Chairman Choi’s obsession with his research, he’d likely made many more under-the-table adoptions.
Decades later, Hye-eun ran into Cheol-won again at Chairman Choi’s funeral, which is how they reconnected. However, Hye-eun claims ignorance regarding Cheol-won’s vengeance, as well as Myung-joon’s kidnapping. Feigning shock, Hye-eun even sheds a few crocodile tears, playing up the distraught victim act.
Upon returning to the villa, Jaden takes his frustration out on Myung-joon, threatening him with a gun to his head. Ho-young finds the landline in the basement room, and the jig is up. Did Myung-joon call Taek-kyun? Or did he contact Hye-eun? Jaden demands answers, and he wants them now.
Myung-joon insists that he acted alone, but that only stokes the flames of Jaden’s fury. Jaden cocks the gun, looking like he’s seconds away from shooting Myung-joon, and Ro-hee can’t help but cut in. Against Myung-joon’s protests, Ro-hee reveals how Hye-eun instigated the kidnapping to pay for Hee-ae’s surgery.
Myung-joon may have gotten a bruised head out of that confrontation, but Ro-hee’s managed to glean some useful information that Jaden let slip. Our duo is now aware of the connection between Hye-eun and Cheol-won, which Ro-hee finds odd.
When the kidnapper makes her next call, Taek-kyun picks up in front of Jaden and Grand-uncle Choi. Ho-young traces the call to a server in Russia, and Jaden’s lackeys corner Hye-eun as she exits a public toilet. The caller goes silent for a few long moments. Then just as Jaden thinks he’s caught the culprit red-handed, the caller continues speaking. It’s not Hye-eun after all. So who is she?
Over in Eun-seon’s office, the camera pans over to her screen — and it’s her on the line, with an IP address-disguising program open. Ro-hee had leveraged on Eun-seon’s personal stakes in the project to recruit her into their plan, knowing that Eun-seon can’t afford to lose her to Jaden’s clutches.
During the call, the kidnapper had demanded that they split the ransom money into twenty bags, to be deposited at trash collection points along a particular street; it turns out to be a clever tactic to divert attention by spreading Jaden’s manpower thin. With only three guards left in the house, Myung-joon makes quick work of them when Ro-hee helpfully shuts the lights off, and then our adorable duo are free. Later, Eun-seon and Taek-kyun drive away from the villa, but they’re soon overtaken by Jaden, who smirks that he’s weeded out the mole.
In the alleyway, the truck driver gets cornered by Jaden’s men after collecting all the ransom bags. They bash his windows in, forcing him to exit the vehicle. Except, it’s a gun that emerges first. The driver steps out, pulling off his mask — it’s Sang-yoon.
Ahhh!! I am so excited for Sang-yoon to finally team up with our delightful duo, with his tenacious spirit and unwavering sense of justice. The ‘R’ in Ro-hee definitely stands for ‘resourceful’ — not only did she devise this plan, but she also managed to sneak Eun-seon’s burner phone and Sang-yoon’s name card to Myung-joon via lunchbox. I love that Myung-joon trusted Sang-yoon enough to pull him into their plan, and that Sang-yoon trusted Myung-joon enough to go along with it.
Sang-yoon has displayed a keen intuition, reading people with astute precision, and I think he’ll complement Ro-hee’s brain and Myung-joon’s brawn perfectly. It didn’t seem like he bought into Hye-eun’s sob story, given that he still has his subordinates on her tail, and I wonder how that will unfold. Does Hye-eun still care enough for her family to team up with Myung-joon, or will her selfish motivations win out?
Slowly but surely, Ro-hee’s ragtag team is expanding, bringing together such diverse and intriguing personalities. Despite his mild demeanor, Taek-kyun isn’t one to be underestimated, if his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it smirks this episode are anything to go by. Taek-kyun does seem to genuinely care for Ro-hee, but it’s hard to ignore the amused — maybe even ambitious? — glint in his eyes when Ro-hee offered to appoint him as the guardian of her estate, in exchange for his part in the scheme.
Meanwhile, Jaden continues to be terrifying in the most captivating way, and I’m absolutely loving it. His short temper will likely prove to be his undoing, given how he’s already unraveling at the slightest provocation, but it’s precisely this explosive reactivity that makes him such an entertaining watch. It’s so fun to watch Jaden and Ro-hee go head-to-head in a battle of wits, and even as I’m rooting for our headstrong heroine to come out on top, I’m also relishing their chess game of outsmarting and outplaying each other.

Ugh, I was SO disappointed by losing an episode this week! I just kept checking on Wednesday as I was in denial haha (reminds me of May I Help You? airing interruptions and how once again, I wish I weren't so invested that I watch weekly vs binging at the end of the series haha)
That aside, I continue to like this show even though I'm not eloquent enough to explain why haha.
When I see characters like Det. Park Sung Yoon, it makes me wish more people like him could exist in reality. On the one hand, that is such a low bar: competent, pragmatic, and upstanding and then on the other, it feels so fantastical because EVERYTHING is about connections and power and money and freaking hierarchy. It feels crazy how I just sigh in relief when he comes on the screen just because the guy is actually doing his job haha. Like yeessssss! A good police officer haha.
As always, Myeong Jun & Ro Hee's teamwork continues being cute and engaging to me. I love how she truly is the brains and he can be like the goofy kid but then he's also caring and protective. He is just a good nice guy and I think that shines through which is what made the detective believe him even though he is technically a kidnapper and I think he may possibly endear that enforcer to his side (but who knows)
I thought the way Ro Hee assembled her little team was cool and I liked that even the detective was included. I guess this would serve as proof that there is more to the story just as he assumed.
The murder is still weird; I thought the killer gave a plausible explanation but it's still so weird. Why *that* day? Why was the wife murdered? Even if the father killed the wife, what made him snap? Who took all the research and whatever vials of that drug? Who hired the junk man to take Ro Hee? Will that jerkass uncle get any comeuppence?

Continuing from last time when I mentioned about the way HIV/AIDS is presented it, I am not a fan. Like I've said, I'm not an expert and things have changed over time but I'm fairly certain that HIV & AIDS aren't interchangable phrases. One leads to the other. One was the absolute death sentence and people could live with the other for years (especially nowadays).
And it grosses me out that even in a fictional hospital, people were so careless with a bloody scalpel, even more so a bloody scalpel that was used on an AIDS patient.
Is there no other diseases, real or fictional, they could have given the character that worked for the story?

Ugh, yes - that’s not how AIDS works! Grrr. Here’s my best guess about the ridiculous way the HIV/AIDS premise is handled: the writer needed a stigmatized disease and that was the first thing that came to mind (or the first hit on google) and s/he looked no further for something more plausible. It's similar to the way we speculated that Numbers featured *aerosol* methanol as a cause of (future, maybe, someday) blindness because googling “blindness+chemical” pops up methanol as the first result, and never mind that the mechanics of disease are complete nonsense in both cases. I'd be less annoyed if there weren't already decades of harmful, vicious misinformation about HIV out there.

I am still crying over the missed episode!
What an ending! So satisfying to see our team come together.
I don’t trust Hye-Eun. I feel like there is more to her.
Jaden is such an interesting villain!!

Hye-Eun feels like a master manipulator. It can't be a coincidence that Rohee's parents were killed when she suggested Myungjeon kidnap her.

I totally agree about Hye-eun. I feel like out of all the characters, I trust her the least. At least with Jaden and great uncle Choi, you know what you’re getting and you know what their motivations are, but I just can’t figure her out at all. I think some of the emotion of her interrogation was real (maybe?) but certainly not all of it. And as she was leaving and Sang-yoon told her that he didn’t think Myung-joon was the type of person to kidnap someone and she agreed, I didn’t know whether to feel good about the fact that Sang-yoon was getting more confirmation for his hunches, or just unsettled because I don’t know what Hye-eun’s plan is.

This drama is so good, especially Yoon Kye Sang is killing it as an adorable fool and Yu Na as an intelligent kid. Dr. Mo seems like she might be having consciousness, the same as the hitman, but all these people can never be trusted which makes the show all the more interesting. I wonder why Ro Hee asked for money because the investors can easily throw off the cops off their scent using power. I also do not know what is benefit of being a guardian to a real estate, so I am skeptic of the attorney being enticed by Ro Hee's offer.
Thanks for the recap @solstices

This is the first time I saw Myeong-jun shouted at Ro-hee for revealing Hye-eun's involvement in the kidnapping. I know Myeong-jun tried to protect Hye-eun and their daughter Hee-ae, and Ro-hee did that to save Myeong-jun's life from being shot by Jaden, but seeing our favourite duo shouted at each other is still quite heartbreaking.
I am also surprised to see Ro-hee's indifferent expression when seeing Myeong-jun being beaten up by Jaden. Even Dr. Mo Eun-sun didn't dare to watch. I thought a young girl her age would be very scared and terrified to see such violence. Is it because of the impact of all the drugs given all her life, or is she used to see such level of violence before?
And I agree that Hye-eun is very suspicious. It looks like Cheol-won is just covering for her to "repent his sins" for causing her to get HIV. I wouldn't be surprised if Hye-eun is actually involved in Ro-hee's father's murder (which makes her killing her own adopted brother!).
And what's wrong with the family values here, OMG.
- The great uncle really doesn't show any care about Ro-hee.
- Ro-hee's father used his own daughter (which I presume is biological daughter, no mentions that she was adopted so far) for his medical experiment. Which father would have the heart to do such cruel thing to his own daughter?
- Hye-eun also doesn't seem to care at all about the well-being of her own daughter (Hee-ae, which I also presume is her biological daughter with Myeong-jun).
I know this is a work of fiction, but still....

Ro Hee wasn't indifferent; she was worried about him which is why she revealed the ex wife being mastermind of the plot.
The great uncle *doesn't* care about Ro Hee. He didn't even consider her or her father his family cause the father was adopted.

I love the way this show is exploring emotional intelligence (EI) vs intellectual ability. Myung-joon is not quite as dumb as he claims, but his real strength is EI. Sang-yoon is extremely smart and observant and good at deductive reasoning. Ro-hee has both kinds of intelligence - her real genius is that she has somehow developed her EI despite the cold horror of her upbringing and has integrated the two to make better predictions, judgments, and plans than the other characters, even if they’re quite smart or devious. Taek-kyun is still a dark horse - it will be fun to see how he makes his choices.

That kid Ro-Hee is so smart that I have problems keeping up with her plan. @elinor said it best where Ro Hee is is equally emotionally intelligent which makes this kid so endearing.
I don't think I've been soo impressed with a kid actor since Mother
I really like this show. Currently my favorite on-air show at the moment. More Beanies should be watching this gem. It's not surprising that the viewership keeps rising every week.
I also can't unsee Eun-Sun (Seo_Jae-Hee) as Na Hee-Do's mother from 25-21. The same expressions, the same cold shell of a look hiding some tenderness below. It feels like she will be instrumental.

I love this drama more with every episode (and I’m finally caught up yay!). I’ve seen Yoon Kye-sang play a villain and a stoic-but-swoony ML, and he’s killing it with his derpy ajusshi vibe. I’m getting to the point that I want to watch whatever he’s in.
I’m beyond thrilled that our detective is joining the squad! I thought of him at first when the masked person showed up to collect the money, but then I thought that it couldn’t be, and he was more likely to be somewhere else, arresting the great uncle or something. But he’s in deep now and I am here for it! This whole time Sang-yoon has done such an amazing job piecing together the facts of this complicated case, and most of what he still needs is a story to make the whole thing make sense. I hope he gets it and I hope we get sufficient scenes with the three of them together!
I might be in the minority, but while I find Jaden very fun to watch and an interesting antagonist for our heroine and her team, I don’t find him particularly complex. I think he’s smart, and sly, and likes to win, but at the end of the day his motivations seem incredibly simple to me. I’m still loving it, but someone Hye-eun is the real one I’m watching out for. Jaden wants this “investment” to pay off and to make a boatload of money, but I have no idea what Hye-eun wants at this point.
