Premiere Watch: Strong Girl Nam-soon

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Fantasy, romance, action, crime
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: It’s been a looong time since the fun hit that was Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, and JTBC has cooked up a spin-off with the same essential elements: a supernaturally strong woman in the lead (Lee Yumi), a hefty dose of fun and humor, requisite danger, and a hottie or two on the side. In the case of Strong Girl Nam-soon, we’ve got detective Ong Sung-woo — and Byun Woo-seok as our nefarious CEO. But really, this is a story about strong women, and in addition to our eponymous heroine, her mother (Kim Jung-eun) and grandmother (the miraculous Kim Hae-sook) lead the way. I can’t wait to watch them punch through some walls.

TL;DR: The spin-off is finally here!

Okay, I have two questions about this. I will watch 2 episodes, BUT 2 episodes only, if the answers are not to my liking:

1. Will this spin-off have a creepy sexual serial murderer who keeps women in cages? If so, I will not only exit this show so fast that no strong woman can catch me, I will also curse the show by continuously pouring poop tea over all the commentary.

2. Is the policeman suitor once again going to be in a love triangle? I have resigned myself to love triangles in rom-coms, even though I truly hate them with a passion, but unless Park Hyung Sik makes a surprise appearance as the male lead, I'm going to griping so much that everyone will wish I would just drink some poop tea and shut up!

Wasn’t it wine, even? Like a fermented product made from poop? Ugh.

@hacja: Whatever horror poop tea is to one side, please also don’t be tempted to drink luwak coffee (allegedly the most expensive coffee in the world) in Indonesia or elsewhere: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/why-you-shouldnt-drink-luwak-coffee-in-indonesia/

Thanks! I had heard about this, and I thought it was a culinary oddity, and had no idea it involved animal abuse! Of course, this is one of those easy protest actions: "NO! As an animal rights activist I REFUSE to drink coffee that emerges from animal feces! Yes, I am taking this lonely, courageous stand to show my dedication to the cause!

There will be creepy villains for sure. I will carefully read all updates and watch the episode where Park Hyung Sik appears.
Honestly that series is only relevant because of Park Hyung Sik. The entire fringe was a turn off - the kdnapper, the poop team, the land mafia team, the abusive Mom theme, the obnoxiously stereotyped gay bully....I don't know what made them think it was the strong woman that drew the audience...I would be surprised if this crosses 2% rating (barring the cameo episode which no doubt will break the internet), though I am happy to be wrong.

I'm a big fan of Park Hyung Sik myself. But in addition to him I really liked Park Bo-Young, so the main couple was a draw to me, regardless of everything you mention, about which I totally agree! In fact the only reason I stuck with the original was the romance.

But, in a way, even absent Park Hyung Sik, I'm thinking this has a chance to be better than the original, by leaving out all the bad things you mention, so that's why I'll give it a chance. However, if it starts working those aspects in, as a "tribute" to the original, I'm dropping it quickly!

Alas, the aegyo got to me eventually so I’m with Minnie on the OG.

But in the original, wasn’t the policeman the 2ML and the CEO the ML? So we might have the inversion in the remake. Plus, looks like the CEO will be the villain? If they make him a grey character (vs caricature), it might make for an interesting take on the love triangle. And we can have so much fun shipping on DB. (I live for my first DB shipping war.)

He has an amazing superpower (sexy, suited up or doing bare-chested headstands) and most likely doesn’t hold women in cages while drinking poop wine. So we’re off to a good start.

Not sure if this particular drama is really worth the honor to be anyone's first shipping war tho. But I didn't find prolonged love triangle in the original making a lot of sense either, so who am I to judge?

2

@gikata Aww. Way to splash on a girl's dream before even Episode 1. But I can read down thread. Don't tell me you don't see any spicy potential. 🤭

2

@indyfan oh, as I've said below, I absolutely see the spicy potential... but I'm afraid the other two parts of love triangle that aren't the sexy shirtless villain wouldn't be able to deliver a lot on their own. Unless the dark side is supposed to win here, but I seriously doubt that. SWDBS worked because the more interesting pairing among the two was an endgame and guys had plenty of chemistry between themselves even without FL around. Here tho? It'll likely be quite fun in the begging and then go south FAST.

1

@gikata LOL. While I’m prepared to be surprised, the little I’ve seen of the male lead doesn’t lead me to believe we’ll be reading anything under the line between him and the 2ML.

I wouldn’t mind a case where you truly don’t know who wins in the triangle. It might make it more interesting. However, this is theory as it hasn’t happened in my live watching career. 😅

2

@indyfan technically there WERE a few shows where SML got the girl to everyone's shock, but I cannot say such twist was received well, which is likely the reason why this never became norm. One thing kdrama fans love about the genre is its predictability, take it away - and things will get MESSY. Then again, I don't think anyone expect much from this show in general or its romance subplot in particular, so a little messiness to stir some buzz probably wouldn't hurt.

2

…and guys had plenty of chemistry between themselves even without FL around.

This time without strikethrough. Damn straight. Remember the physicality of their fights?

3

@attiton you're being really tactful here to call that INTENSE skinship "fights" instead of "blatant fanservice" or something even more daring lol.

3

I feel like Bong Soon would've been 100% unbearable if played by someone less naturally charming than PBY, so yes, that epic chemistry was their mutual effort. But I'm with @minniegupta1 on that PHS had the better character in that show - had it been just BS and cop guy being a badass crime solving couple... nah. Color me VERY surprised if this spin-off even comes close to the success of the original.

@hacja I am absolutey not taking away anything from BBY. It was undoubtedly a two-way street between PHS and her. As @gikata mentioned, Bong Soon could have been very annoying with any other actress, but I can still think of a couple who might have pulled it off. However, after watching hordes of assembly-line CEOs, I can't think of any actor who would do what PHS did to Ahn Min Hyuk. His macho princess (for want of a better term) personification of the ML was a unique take on the character. And boy, he had chemistry going with everything and everyone in that series (anyone who did not ship Min Hyuk and Guk-doo for at least a few breathless minutes? LOL!).
@indyfan For this series, I don't know if there is enough to ship the couple in the first place, let alone fit in a triangle. @gikata - I am with you. The original triangle itself was difficult to watch after a while (though it gave some of the best comedy ever - I can put her to sleep...comedy gold ), and this is when the chemistry between the men was off the charts, I don't know how this would work out if they went down the same rabbit hole. It does not bode well for this drama when it's grandma and Mom sucking half of the energy in the trailer, with the shirtless handstanding CEO siphoning off the rest. And then, the cherry on top, you have the OG couple who are basically waiting in the wings to wash out everything and have people run to watch Part 1 (with an FF button on speed dial for rewatchers, of course).

But things are gonna be spicier here since apparently the dreaded love triangle (whether canonical or fanonical remains to be seen) is gonna be between FL, cop AND villain guy. That - and OG leads hyped cameo - are pretty much the only interesting things about this drama, at least to me.

"Why can't she marry both?" was THE question that plagued most viewers of the original for all its run lol. No idea why no one among drama makers thought about such a simple yet brilliant decision, but SK's marital laws might have something to do with that. Sheesh, this country really lost all its fun bones since like Silla era...

She could not take the risk - the men would have decamped after finding each other irresistable.....

3

@minniegupta1 hah! True, but I've always felt that Min Min would've NEVAH do that to his worshiped heroine in shining armor... Gook Du tho kinda failed to convince me he liked her all that much, so him switching teams at the first opportunity presented wouldn't been a big shock. But she herself was never a good judge of character anyway, so her cautious reluctance is understandable.

3

@gikata Guk Doo never had time to like her, he was too busy infantalizing her...
The stunningly different way both men treated her was gobsmacking (in a good way).

TIL - "fanonical"!

Thank you for teaching - word of the day.

I didn't like Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, but I do think the spin-off will be better, but I also don't have the time. 😮‍💨

This is streaming on Netflix, and the cardboard standee is because Ong Seong-wu is serving his military duty.

I know nothing about the original "Strong GirL" (except that favorite Yoo In Soowas in it) but then I see a photo of none other than Kim Hae Sook (Marriage not Dating; Judge vs. Judge; Queen's Umbrella) and I guess I'm hooked for a couple of episodes at least. She is Da Queen.

(I bit the bullet after the scintillating discussions here):

Just gave the first episode a try. I will wait for the recap, but here are my premiere watch first impressions:
The villain (or is he by chance the ML) is as good as the trailers.
The ML is as bad as the trailers.
The FL does not even touch PBY in screen presence though she is quite pretty. She is giving a Shin Ha ri vibe but is bringing that wierd infantalization of the female character I can't stand.
The police cell as usual looks as depressing as last time. The nefarious activity here looks even more sinister than Part 1. I am not sure how I feel about it. It's Netflix so anything can happen (depending on how much boundary cable in S Korea will push).
I must say - the production value is jaw dropping good. They blended avengers and folklore. The opening scenes are fantastic, then slides to mundane. I wish the first part had this kind of a budget and backup.
It wasn't truly interesting, though women on motorcycles are always cool.
I waited for bated breath for OG. No luck.

AND - it didn't make me laugh. The superpower girl intro for part 1 was so poorly executed and childish with bad CGI that it was hilarious (each flight of pain juxtaposed by expressions of incredulity flashing on PHS's face...LOL! Comedy gold).
Part 2 is slick and fancy and very CGI - all sparks without the spark.

4

I just remembered - the entry in both are identical (first one saves a bus and second one saves a plane). The first one had all all the heart (them eyes staring out of the back of the bus which then takes us to the hilaious midnight scene...I need to watch it again), this one has all the CGI.
Well.....

Kim Hae Sook sunbae-nim SLAAAYYYYYYS in that outfit 🤩
Also, this drama will be on Netflix Canada-- I literally just logged into Netflix on my laptop and the preview is literally the very first thing that pops up at the top of the screen for me

I watched this last night and it's a pass for me. The humor is juvenile and falls completely flat, there's no warmth in the family dynamic, the dialogue and plot are basic, and the only character/actor who's grabbing me is the villain. But I suspect he'll end up being a bore, too. I was mildly entertained for the last few minutes, but that's not nearly enough to justify tuning in to ep. 2. I hold out some hope that Beanies will say this one ends up getting really good as it goes on, but I'm not optimistic.

I watched the first 5-ish minutes of episode 1 and my initial impression (before turning it off) was the series is VERY 'low rent'. It makes Do Bong-soon look like Hamlet in comparison. And yes, I enjoyed the original series, despite it being admittedly a bit bi-polar.
