News bites: October 11, 2023
by tccolb
- New character stills have dropped for Netflix’s upcoming Daily Dose of Sunshine, brightening up our screens with the medical drama’s four leads: Park Bo-young (Doom at Your Service), Yeon Woo-jin (Thirty-Nine), Jang Dong-yoon (Oasis), and Lee Jung-eun (Missing: The Other Side 2). Releasing next month on November 3, production for the webtoon adaptation has PD Lee Jae-kyu (All of Us Are Dead) and PD Kim Nam-soo at the helm, with scripts by the Behind Your Touch writers: Lee Nam-kyu, Oh Bo-hyun, and Kim Da-hee. [Newsen]
- Speaking of adaptations, the first poster has arrived for MBC’s The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract where we follow our Joseon heroine Lee Se-young (The Law Cafe) as she stumbles through 200 years into the 21st century in present day. Also starring Bae In-hyuk (Cheer Up), Joo Hyun-young (Behind Every Star), and Yoo Seon-ho (Under the Queen’s Umbrella), the fantasy romance is set to premiere in November. [MBC]
- Also preparing for their fall-winter lineup, SBS announced that My Demon will be coming this November 24, headlined by chic chaebol Kim Yoo-jung (Lovers of the Red Sky) and her soon-to-be demon husband Song Kang (Forecasting Love and Weather). The fantasy rom-com follows 7 Escape: War for Survival in the weekend slot, with production led by PD Kim Jang-han (You Raise Me Up) and writer Choi Ah-il (Mr. Queen). [SBS]
- Yeonwoo (Numbers) has reportedly been added to the cast of the screwball comedy and thriller Gaslighting, stepping in for Kang Hae-rim (Somebody) who bowed out. The series also stars Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires), Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), and Kim Nam-hee (Family: The Unbreakable Bond), with filmmaker Kim Seung-woo (Bring Me Home) directing and writing by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan). [YTN]
- The promos continue for tvN’s upcoming Castaway Diva and the latest stills give the spotlight to our male leads: Chae Jong-hyeop (Unlock the Boss), Cha Hak-yeon (Joseon Attorney), and Kim Joo-hun (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3). Come October 28, we’ll be following them alongside our lost-at-sea heroine Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and singer role model Kim Hyo-jin (The Good Detective 2) in a heart-cozying story about healing and growth. [Sports Chosun]
- More stills have dropped for KBS’s The Goryeo-Khitan War as well, suiting us up for a long battle with Choi Su-jong (My Only One) and Lee Won-jong (Bait) rallying the troops. Placing Kim Dong-joon (More Than Friends) as our young King Hyeonjong to lead the nation, the grand sageuk begins its epic tale on November 11 in the weekend slot. [News1 (1), (2)]

1. This looks sweet, I hope it isn't a fake out. I'm sick of healing dramas not being healing.
2. I am hype for this. Love, love, LSY.
3. I like this premise, but Song Kang, hmmmm, lol.
5. Castaway Diva with my favorite ML smile, CJH. This will be a ridiculous drama and I am here for it.

Are you reading my mind? The only difference is I am watching Castaway Diva for Park Eun Bin. That Song Kong reaction! (My sister calls him Korean Emmran Hashmi, I cannot even explain why it resonated with me and I laughed like crazy)

1) It's not an easy theme and I'm pretty sure there will be some missteps, but I'm happy they're still trying to tell this kind of story. Both Yeon Woo-jin and Jang Dong-yoon are main lead material? So who is the official one? I need to be prepared to avoir a SLS!
2) I like both actors and I'm not tired by past-present romance yet.
3) Kim Yoo-Jung's drama \o/ I don't think I watched her as a chic chaebol, I'm curious to see her in this kind of role!
5) Potato boy will have to smile a lot to make me forget this haircut!
6) Ready to see a lot of old men with beards! The key is not to confuse them...

“3) Kim Yoo-Jung's drama \o/ I don't think I watched her as a chic chaebol, I'm curious to see her in this kind of role!”
For some reason, I can easily picture Kim Yoo Jung in this haughty, chic chaebol role. First saw her in Angry Mom and even though they were poor, she still had thy glamorous, semi-haughty aura...maybe it was the long, dark hair? Idk😂

GORYEO/KHITAN: I love Lee Won-jong in sageuks and am glad he plays one of my favorite generals. I hope he'll at least live for half of the show. I can't help but feel like this is a dude's sageuk, and it'll take me a while to finish it.

😁 This makes me wonder in what era Rowoon's next drama takes place, though. I'd been assuming the usual vaguely 17th-18th-century-ish Joseon period, but did that hat style really remain unevolved for +/- 700 years since the Goryeo-Khitan war?
And thanks, now I know the Hangul spelling of my nym! My first/last names consist entirely of sounds that don't occur in Korean - I wouldn't even know where to start. 😂
Am I the only one who thinks a theoretical makjang mash-up of Park’s Marriage Contract, My Demon, and Gaslighting would be far more interesting than any of them individually?

@Elinor:😊 Pleasure.
Do you think they were just saddling poor Rowoon with whatever style hat they could find since probably era specific accuracy wasn’t that high on their list of priorities.
And, even though makjangs are not usually my thing, I would watch your makjang mash-up most def.

1 - nope, drama, it won't work on me even with those stills of YWJ and JDY looking super cute... I said it won't!
2 - LSY always looks good in hanbok. Still, this is a nope too.
3 - why does it have to be this guy? And this writer? I have a personal bloody vendetta towards anyone responsible for MR QUEEN's script. Premise tho... demon husbands are all rage now in kdramas too? Sorry, guys, but to me this race has already ended in April, everyone else can settle for participation prize)))
5 - Hakyeon in glasses! With rolled up sleeves! And partially open forehead!!! Yep, that's it, that's all my comment will be about 'cause I sincerely doubt drama manages to give me anything beside that. But who knows...
6 - those guys BREATHE serious business vibes. I'm scared^^

I mainly want on my platter the head of the other writer, not this one, but they both should be held responsible for that abomination of finale. And THEN once again, now for that horrible retcon-ish spin-off BS. That wasn't just the ending, we've got spit in the face by them TWICE!

@attiton OMG that image.....it has me rolling. hahahahahaha!! Darn, had a looooooooong day at work, and was feeling bone tired. The laugh did me good. NOT weird at all!!!
@gikata Let me see if I can convince you to at least not not like him. To be honest Song Kang is not someone I would stick to a series for unlike some people we know (check his new noir pics, especially the close up, they are to die for but I digress).
Back to Kang, the last three episodes of Nevertheless is beautiful. Epecially when he realises how bad he has it for Nabi. Some of his emoting when he returns to help her fix her work is marvelous. In Navirella he is green, and still has some way to go before he reaches a certain maturity, but there is an earnestness about his perfomance that is heart warming. I could not finish Nevirella because it was just way too mauldin. But so far what I have seen, he has potential. Of course, he has a certain softness that might be a put off for some (I found him very off putting in Forecasting Love and weather) but I don't want to write him off, yet.

@minniegupta1 I wouldn't say I DISLIKE the guy as I've yet to see much of him aside of some snippets from different shows, but from those brief encounters it seems to me that he lacks... well, most of the things I usually like in my faves. Not gonna comment on his acting with so little info, but neither his natural charm nor visuals nor role/drama choices appeal to me in the slightest. Combine this with his recent overexposure and you'll get why I'm mostly "huh?" whenever I see the news about him. Perhaps at some point the right show will prove me wrong, but so far... *shrugs* Not a fan of FORCING myself to like an actor, it should happen naturally.

1. Love the cast (yay, Jang Dong-yoon!), but classifying something as a ‘healing drama’ is a huge red flag.
2. Even setting aside the always-incredible Lee Se-young who I would watch in literally anything, the premise has potential to be fascinating. When dealing with time-travel narratives in kdramas, the traveller is almost universally male and especially so when the subject is moving forward in time. I am interested to see how they tackle the enormous social and cultural challenges LSY’s noblewoman character will undoubtedly face. I don’t really expect this to be a feminist narrative, but there’s no avoiding the earth-shattering culture shock of a Joseon-era woman in 21st century Korea. And probably even more so, the ways in which society, perhaps, didn’t quite progress forward. Lots to chew on.
3. Very mixed feelings about Song Kang, but Kim Yoo-jung as a chaebol has hooked me. And I will always, always be a sucker for a good contract marriage (and there’s two in this news list!).
4. Hmmm. I don’t remember seeing Yeonwoo in anything before so I can’t speak to her abilities, but Kang Hae-rim was pretty good in Somebody and it’s a shame we can’t see her back on the screen sooner.
5. The world will finally see the vision we have seen for years now: Chae Jong-hyeop, the next big star of his generation. Manifesting this with a prayer circle. And maybe a few sacrifices.
6. The revival of the traditional epic sageuks is something so pleasing to me. Nature is healing fr.

There's enormous potential if they stick the landing. I'm not holding my breath on whether they manage to properly utilize the sheer magnitude of a Joseon woman's alienation in modern Seoul, but I hope they at least explore some aspects. Maybe they take a look at gender roles in relation to dating and marriage, as that directly relates to the contract marriage plot? I can't imagine LSY's character's standards not clashing with Bae In-hyuk's more modernized sensibilities, even if modern Korea remains hopelessly sexist in many ways.

That would be amazing. My money is 100% on the show reducing it to fish-out-of-water laughs, possibly with a backstop of showing LSY's Joseon character being relatively liberal/rebellious and ahead of her time. I'd be happy to be wrong, though. And at the very least, I'm thrilled that it's a Joseon woman who gets to visit the future.
I won't mind the inevitable scenes of the FL grappling with elevators, convenience stores, and cell phones. Queen Inhyun's Man's ML provided a good template for this. But technology, or at least its function, is relatively easy to grasp. Social mores can take a lifetime, although women are less incentivized to ignore changing cultural standards than men are.

@elinor: My money’s also on the writers reducing the cultural barriers to the occasional fish-out-of-water gaffes, but I hope not. It’s such an interesting premise and one practically demanding a more in-depth exploration. Although I have to disagree on technology being easy to grasp. I am a thoroughly 21st century woman and still sometimes feel like an alien trying to handle modern tech.
As for the sacrifice, I have so many people in mind, it’s difficult to limit it to a small group. One thing for sure, screenwriters will be the first ones dragged to the altar. I have a vendetta and require bloodshed.

1. Coincidentally, I was just watching Yepn Woon Jin in some scenes of Introverted Boss. Lil Sis is watching and loving it, I on the other hand, love only Yeon Woo Jin, the brief cameos of Jang Hee Jin (why couldn’t he date her😩) and what little time we had with the actress who played Park Hye Soo’s diseased older sister, Hwan Ki’s former secretary. Dazz all!
2. Maybe Park’s Marraige Contract will be the healing I need from The Red Sleeve trauma. Hopefully. Lee See Young is so adorable in the 2012 melo drama, I Miss You, which is my current watch.
4. ‘Gaslighting’ as a drama title is interesting, I’m inclined to keep my eyes on this one, even if I’m not in the mood for a thriller.
