Love appears for KBS’s Matchmakers Kim Ro-woon and Jo Yi-hyun

More promos have been released as we prepare the wedding bells for KBS’s saguek rom-com The Matchmakers, showcasing leads Kim Ro-woon (Destined With You) and Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead) in a new poster and video teaser.

Giving us another peek at our main pair’s backstory, the teaser begins with our widowed prince consort Shim Jung-woo (Kim Ro-woon). Through the captions and helpful voiceovers, we learn that Jung-woo has been trying to get his marriage annulled, frustrated from living an idle and stagnant life.

It’s been eight long years since he was married to the princess. But she shockingly died during their wedding ceremony and Jung-woo has been living in limbo ever since, forced to stay faithful to his late wife and unable to advance his career.

Our heroine Jung Soon-deok (Jo Yi-hyun) was similarly widowed early. However, she finds life fulfillment through a secret side job and becomes infamous in Hanyang as a goddess of matchmaking.

At first, Soon-deok is suspicious of Jung-woo, but the teaser soon reveals why he sought her services. Finally given an opportunity for advancement, King Jo Han-chul (Race) had appointed Jung-woo with a curious but important task: “Professor Maeng’s three daughters must all be married within two months time.”

We then return to our two leads as they work out the terms of their partnership. As their bickering relationship blossoms over the sequence, the stoic Jung-woo tries to assert that, “Love isn’t necessarily needed in marriage.” But Soon-deok disagrees and we end her argument that, “No. Love appears from here and there, and is the start of everything.”

With production led by writer Ha Soo-jin (Sell Your Haunted House) along with PD Hwang Seung-gi (Memorials) and PD Kim Soo-jin (Nineteen Otters), KBS’s The Matchmakers premieres next week on October 30 in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

I love the look of this but after being bitten by Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist I will see what turns up role palace politics plays in the first couple of episodes.

Very good point, Reply. I’m here rooting for campy comedy all the way through that doesn’t descend into messy politics OR “deep” philosophy. Also we all clearly want beautiful costuming—but I think we’ll definitely get that. It probably won’t be enough on it’s own, though.

I'm curious about their hanboks, they were made by a stylist who won a price in the past. The pink one was worn by officials of high rank. It was kinda cute.

And thinks to @kiara, I can appreciate the little cute ducks on the different posters!

It looks like a real fun drama, it will balance their other sageuk Goryeo-Khitan War that looks very serious and tragic already.

Fact - Rowoon does not look pretty in (pale) pink. Hot pink is of course another matter 🥵 🔥

This is so interesting that the stylist won an award. I can totally see that - FL has some 7-8 colors in her outfit (in various posters) but looks very put together and not a walking fashion disaster if I tried to wear so many colors at once!

The ducks (and their placement over the drama name) is also different each time on the posters.

I like the pale pink on him, he looks cute, But it's a lot of pink with Rowoon's stature. I do prefer more bold colors on him.

He indeed looks very cute in the picture but in a full frame it would make him look little dull. Bold colors really make him twinkle and shine. ✨

Ghostly pale foundation doesn't help either, man looks like he just had a date with a hungry vampire.

Also - is it just me or his sleeves are really way too long? Was that a thing during a certain period in Joseon, like at some point in China, or stylist is trying to make some statement I cannot grasp yet?

3

@Gikata we will probably have to wait for the drama to air to see what "statement" the stylist makes.
Just going by the posters and promotional stills released for now there does seem to be a lot of care taken in the styling and the kaleidoscopic colors used.
The color palette is very interesting - lots of different colors in every scene but all harmonious and soft.
If nothing else at least it will be a visual treat.

@Kurama you said that pink hanboks were worn by high ranking officials. Can you also please guide us about the sleeves being extra long was really a thing or is a stylistic choice. Thank you in advance. 😀

3

@Seeker I don't know. But overall, the comments of the netizen are that they're very happy with the costumes because they look very authentic and even the gat is worn like it should...

I can't see the differences personnaly.

3

Thank you @Kurama. Even I cannot make out any differences. Just seems like a lot more colors than usual, but beautifully done outfits. I am looking forward to analyzing the outfits as much as Ro-swooning!!

@Gikata
Looking at the pictures, it looks that she paid way more attention to FL's outfits than his. I feel the materials are too light weight, transparent. I like hanboks that have fabrics with more details, that are somewhat plied at the bottom, they look more majestic. MD's stylist did a great job.
Have you seen The royal tailor?

Kodra, on the basis of the posters / teasers it seems like the robes of Rowoon in the drama initially are pale colored with fewer colors used and gradually during the course of the drama as the FL colors his life, his clothes too become brighter and more lively.
We will of course have to watch the drama for that. 🤣

I haven't seen the movie you mentioned. What is MD?

The Royal Tailor was good but I don't think Queens were wearing this kind of dresses on the other hand.

The inspiration for the pink hanbok : https://images.app.goo.gl/EdDpWTn65rwqnVFW8

2

If I remember corectly, the length of the sleeves of hanboks were discused in the movie.
He is the widow of a princess, right? In that context I think that they look basic, the colors l like.
I will give it a try, for sure.

2

@kurama
Yes, of course those dresses are out of line. The movie talks about the lenghts of sleeves, I think.
To me, he looks good in any color. And he would look good dressed with potato sack. But it looks like his are some bed sheets tied at the waist and hers are more detailed. And he doesn't look like a princes's widower, more like a entry level scholar.

Perhaps his austere style reflects his grieving status? Wouldn't be surprised if rigid Joseon laws had some regulations regarding that too.

2

Possible, since FL appear to be the more energetic one from lead duo. Still, under dressing a man so pretty as RW IS a crime that should not be committed without a very strong reason. Let's see if drama manages to provide said reason and convince me...

No, I haven't. Is it good, aside of fashion commentary?

As a princess (almost) consort it is perhaps expected for him to maintain a rather austere appearance but eight years? Also the wedding was never solomenized and he has been petitioning for annulment of the marriage.
Hopefully, we will get cleverer woven answers from the writer and not loose threads. 😀

We absolutely want Rowoon to look his best!

2

@seeker yes, 8 years is quite a lot, I believe a standard expected period of heavy mourning was either 1 or 3 years, depending on the statuses of people involved. But he could've been pressured into doing it for longer by either royal or his own family since performative grief over a dead spouse was a big thing in that era. Or he's doing it willingly in self-irony, his character is described as extra grumpy and bitter about his unfortunate circumstances after all.

I think we all collectively agree that ultramarine and black warrior uniform from DWY flashbacks is RW's best sageuk look to date. High bar to beat for this one...

4

Rowoon literally shines (irrespective of makeup) in bright colors and hanboks make him look really good.
Going by the care and detailing in the poster I am hoping for a visual treat!

3

We will soon find out, seems like we will have, quoting @seeker, a treat with this one. And you are right, maybe those were the rules in Joseon at that time, do we know when the story is taking place?

Not great, but not bad also. It's ok to watch it if you're into sageuks and need to fill an hour or so when you're stuck with nothing to watch.

1

The colors and scenes are very pretty.

But I will wait for reviews before I will check this out.

Ah good - Rowoon, oraenmaniya. We can’t seem to see him soon enough!
Hopefully we will be able to finish this drama peacefully.
Styling is really really good and stands out. Hope the drama maintains a light tone and does not get too involved in palace politics.
Also can we have a meaningful HEA and not a haphazardly slapped on one.

I'm so used to thinking of Cho Yihyun as the schoolgirl from the zombie drama and bro towers over her so much, I thought she's too young to be his FL and that the age gap was huge. But nope, IRL, they're quite close in age. Will the height difference between them be cute or make it weird? It worked for JBA and Rowoon in DWY, so fingers crossed it works here too.
