Nam Joo-hyuk serves his own justice as Disney+’s Vigilante

Adding to a moody lineup of dramas this fall, the promo train has taken off for Disney+’s Vigilante and we get our first peek at the crime-action’s main cast in the first poster and video teaser.

Based on a webtoon by the same title, the series stars Nam Joo-hyuk (Twenty Five Twenty One) as police cadet Kim Ji-yong, who chose his career path with the personal goal of finding the perpetrators who wronged his parents. But Ji-yong finds the legal system riddled with gaping holes, allowing criminals to easily slip away with just a slap on the wrist.

In order to ensure that punishment is served, we see in the teaser’s opening that Ji-yong has gone rogue. As he catches up with one such criminal, he lectures, “You should have lived in remorse for the rest of your life. From now on, you can blame the law that let you go freely.”

But while Ji-yong hides his face with the hoodie of invisibility, he does want his work to be found and leaves a gory statement for the police. Inspecting the scene, head of police investigations Jo Heon – played by Yoo Ji-tae (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) – concludes that, “This is not something anyone can do. It is someone very diligent and crazed on justice.”

We are then introduced to Lee Jun-hyuk (Dark Hole) playing DK Group’s vice-president Jo Kang-ok, who is intrigued by our vigilante hero. Another potential ally is Kim So-jin’s (Through the Darkness) journalist Choi Mi-ryeo, who discusses the article with her boss: “Someone is using violence to serve the punishment for crime that the law failed to do. Right now, the people want a dark hero like this.”

As Ji-yong continues his vigilante work, Mi-ryeo celebrates another hit piece for the news, while Heon fumes in the background. In the appearing captions we read: “A dark hero made by the world. I will do the sentencing now.” The teaser then closes with Ji-yong’s resolve: “There are holes in the law and I’m now going to close them.”

Directed by filmmaker Choi Jung-yeol (Start-Up, the 2019 film) with scripts by Lee Min-seob, 8-episode drama Vigilante will be releasing two episodes a week on Wednesdays starting November 8 on Disney+.

This looks promising and something right up my alley. November release would be a long wait.

I really hope this one is like Moving, insofar as pushing the characterization limits of the genre, but ngl, the “There are holes in the law and I’m now going to close them.” quote made me immediately think of Sylvester Stallone in Cobra -- "Crime's the disease, I'm the cure."

Wow, that's some bold attempt to expand one's resume. Now if only he manages to DELIVER at that... Otherwise I've yet to see anything unique enough to make this plot memorable, seems like writer didn't even try.

And what's with all those dark shows bought by Mouse? Desperate attempt to revive the brand? They're gonna need the necromancer at this point)))

Honestly just sounds like The Killing Vote except we’re supposed to (maybe?) be Team Vigilante. I find these stories can go either way for me, but I’m really enjoying TKV, so I’m not sure I need another one right now.

That one note expression.....this guys is so good looking, and actually has a repertoire of expressions that he does not use...he can be a great actor, if only he would try.....this is definitely giving Dexter vobes though.

Agree. He never impressed me in anything (besides Weightlifting which I think suits his real persona). I always think about others actors that could have been in his place in the roles given to him. To me, he is boring because his expressions never change (or seem forced). Perhaps just like HMH, he isn’t totally immersed in any role, so we see NJH parts also in this projects.

True. There are so many actors with so much more mettle. I have always felt he simply walks through his roles uninterested. Maybe he does not have it in him, but I do think that's not the case. I feel he just does not try. Lately in all his projects all he does is look kind of sad and - I don't know - lacks energy? Synergy with his co-actors?

I haven't thought about him being sad or lacking energy, but now that you mentioned it I started to think so. Perhaps it might be better for him to do something he is really happy about. Like being a model or an influencer? Or he can just choose the roles that suit him. It doesn't matter if anyone else says he is typecast. I think he was wonderful in Weightlifting Fairy. It suited him there.

That’s too bad. I haven’t seen him in an action drama like this, but I know I enjoyed him immensely in both Weightlifting Fairy and Start Up.

Oh, it's the actress of Through the Darkness!

She already had an interesting haircut in TtD, I wonder if there is a reason for this one too.

Otherwise, nothing in this teaser made this vigilante standing out from the other. I guess I will try.

I will watch this, my only question is can NJH pull off the nuance required because I don't know that he can. The one thing he has going for him is that his projects are always interesting even if he himself isn't that interesting.

D+ strikes again. This looks interesting but maybe I won't miss much not being able to watch it cause I don't have D+, however, maybe I won't miss much anyway since it looks like another dark filmed in the dark show and I can't see what's going on.

Sad that it's just another supporting role for Lee Joon Hyuk - and that he hasn't filmed anything so far this year, only a fried chicken commercial, a bunch of variety shows, and magazine photoshoots/interviews. It's going to be a long wait to see this beautiful & talented man on the screen again...

I just saw the promo for this and I'm so looking forward to this! I also saw the webtoon was available but I don't know if I should read it or not.

I'm hoping that I'll like it more than Worst of Evil (I compare them since they're both dark, violent, and on the same steaming service). I hadn't even watched a promo for the Worst of Evil so I'm already slightly more prepared for Vigilante (I tried not to pay too much attention to the promo though haha. Just to get a vibe of what it's about)
