First look at Cha Eun-woo in A Good Day to Be a Dog

All of a sudden dramaland has jumped on the Interesting Spells and Curses train as a way to add the element of surprise to its rom-coms — and hey, I’ll take a love potion or a family curse over a rando serial killer any day.

With MBC’s upcoming fantasy romance A Good Day to Be a Dog, our heroine Park Kyu-young (Celebrity) must deal with just this problem. Her bloodline is cursed with a very strange and unfortunate setup: when kissed, she will turn into a dog nightly at the stroke of midnight. After a few hours she returns to her human form, but yeah — you can see why she has avoiding kissing altogether and dealing with that whole mess. Well, until ye olde soju has something else to say about it.

Like so many heroines before her, a drunken kiss leads to major problems. And in this case that problem is Jin Seo-won, played by Cha Eun-woo (Island). With the curse activated, the only way our heroine can break it is to get this young gentleman to kiss her again. While she’s in her dog form. Oh, and he’s terrified of dogs. Cue: hijinks.

Happily, the drama’s teaser posters do an excellent job of setting the tone they’re going after, with the little dog’s caption reading: “I’m probably the most unfortunate woman in the world,” and the caution triangle reading: “Beware of dog. Lovely! Caution!” Even though the setup is silly, I think the drama will have a lot of fun with it, and we’ll get a cute story here. Park Kyu-young is never not charming, and Cha Eun-woo is quite good at looking pretty + astonished simultaneously, so, what more can you want? Furthermore, we’ve got Lee Hyun-woo (Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area) playing a mountain spirit (I’m thinking Go Kyung-pyo in My Roommate is a Gumiho here, hah) who’s involved in our heroine’s accursed fate.

Notably, the drama will air once a week in a Wednesday-only slot, as MBC appears (don’t quote me) to be running a balancing act to SBS’s Thursday-only slot.

Directed by PD Kim Dae-woong (Start Up The Engine) and adapted from the original webtoon by Baek In-ah, A Good Day to Be a Dog premieres on October 11.

@missvictrix For what it’s worth, and I don’t know if you get charged by the word here or anything, but I stopped needing that headline after the words, “First Look at Cha Eun-woo…” *click*

Is it just me or is Eunwoo's character looking a lot like Suho from True Beauty in those stillsm because of wardrobe and hair?? I think it's the sweaters that's Suho-fying him the most.

Also another curse drama! I'm here for it!!

With all respect to CEW and his legendary face card, the first thing that came to my mind reading this was "how her bloodline is still going with such a chastity belt curse?" and all the dirty possible explanations...

I know some folks have a bit of trepidation for Cha Eun-woo in this role, but I gotta say: I think he’s going to be great. This character needs to look appropriately scared sometimes, but spends a good amount of time handsomely aloof, and I have total confidence in CEW’s ability to pull that off. Do we know who’s playing the nephew yet? I want a still of him next!

Well, it's bonkers enough to be worth a go surely.

My biggest issue is with CEW being cast as a teacher. Nah. Not a single student would get anything done in his lessons due to gazing at him (or getting mad at the other students fawning over him). He'd be on disciplinary measures within a semester for lack of student progress. But then again, this is billed as a fantasy...

I think you forgot a comma and some ellipses: First, look at Cha Eun Woo… Because, I’ll admit it, I did. Haha. But I love Park KYU-young in everything she does, so I’ll definitely be watching this. And did I enjoy seeing CEW in the mess that was Island? Guilty there too. The recaps shall be waiting for me!

Phew, just glad she turns into a very cute small dog instead of, say, a doberman. No way a person with the slightest fear of dogs could help her break the curse then! 😨

But this sounds fun (and reminds me of some mangas I read back in the day)! If it’s going to be available in my region, I’ll surely give it a try.

I will watch it for Park Kyu-Young, she's really a versatile actress.

Is it really a curse when you change in a cute puppy? I mean it could have been a German mastiff...

also congrats to Eun Woo of course...
I am torn between really needing seasoned actors back on screen vs I don´t really mind this guy, I enjoyed True Beauty but the trend does seem to be Face Over Charisma. But in a cute and silly drama, why not.
if the character was older it would probably use the dog as his therapist and talk about lifes´ disappointments, ex wives and how much they hate their boss and the girl dog would have to endure it...

@missvictrix

I love your introduction - "Interesting Spells and Curses"! 😀

Although it is a bewildering new trend in dramaland, surely a love potion, family curse, psychic power giving cow in meteor shower (though not without its side of murder) is somewhat better (?!) than a rom-com set in the midst of a serial killer spree. Will flying brooms be the next best thing.

Not that I have anything against Interesting Spells and Curses - infact I am rather enjoying our twinkling and fragrant Rowoon (Destined With You) and Han Ji-min is totally adorbs.

I know who is adorbs... the dog, finally we get a glimpse. Totally kissable, right?

All set for watching how "pretty + astonished" can Cha Eun-woo be. Can he also be adorably shining as our other current protagonists. Guess he has graduated from school (Gangnam Beauty, True Beauty) to become a math teacher but come on do you seriously think anybody in his class would be able to even put 2 + 2 together while being faced with such a dazzling Prince Charming.

Surely, one can only wonder how far we//Kromcoms//Kroms have come. We've come very far indeed.

A good dose of sarcasm here and there, missvictrix. Well done, well done. lol

I agree that the actor looks like he is doing great at always looking good and astonished, notably at the same time. I like PKY. Le sigh. SO many curses to be broken. The one before belongs to a man; here it belongs to a woman.

I have to admit I got temporarily excited at you mentioning "Directed by PD ... (Start Up ...). I suddenly thought of Start-up for a moment before realizing it wasn't the case. It's a pity. 🙃🙃

I can already smell the onslaught of CEW fans who's gonna be on my ass for this comment but

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy CEW dramas & I'm really looking forward to this drama but I hope he'll be much more charismatic compared to the tsundere-stoic characters he portrayed in the past.

Cha Eun-woo .. we are all rooting for you. Hope you learned some acting tips from Kim Nam-gil in Island and give us something more beyond your totally adorable face card (living anime - as a Beanie recently dubbed him).
Aja aja, hwaiting!

We really don’t see eye to eye at all, do we? I’m not saying he’s next in line for an academy award, but he’s much better than watching a block of wood. 😜
