Ryeoun and Choi Hyun-wook sync up for Sparkling Watermelon

Starting up their promo run with a musical bang, the first teasers are out for tvN’s new youth fantasy Sparkling Watermelon, showcasing our talented leading men, Ryeoun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse) and Choi Hyun-wook (D.P. 2).

The story follows our young student Eun-gyeol (Ryeoun) who has been living a double life, hiding his passion for music and sneaking off at nights to secretly play in a band. Although it’s not confirmed, I do suspect he’s the masked member in the gem of a teaser, featuring iKON’s Ju-ne (a.k.a. Gu Jun-hoe)(Bora! Deborah) as the lead vocalist.

But one day Eun-gyeol stumbles upon a curious musical instruments store, where he’s somehow transported to a puzzling new world. It is here that he meets the energetic Yi-chan (Choi Hyun-wook) and they round up their own little student band, christened Watermelon Sugar.  I was expecting a littttllee more eyeliner – and strutting – from a flower boy band. Alas, those were different times.

But different isn’t a bad thing, and there’s plenty of wholesome cuteness to enjoy in Watermelon Sugar’s video. Paying homage to the 1990s, the group performs a cover of Yoo Seung-beom’s Jealousy, the iconic title song for MBC’s classic series, which starred a young Choi Su-jong (My Only One) and the late Choi Jin-shil (The Last Scandal of My Life).

Now that we’ve gotten some time with the boys, hopefully we’ll be seeing our leading ladies Seol In-ah (Oasis) and Shin Eun-soo (Summer Strike) in the next round of promos.

Coming soon to our screens, tvN’s Sparkling Watermelon is written by Jin Soo-wan (Chicago Typewriter) with PD Sohn Jung-hyun (Mental Coach Jegal) at the helm.

Do wish, personally, as a not fan of that song, that the band was called something else. But ok.
"I was expecting a littttllee more eyeliner" - bring back the eyeliner, I concur.

Sigh. I do so want to watch Choi Hyun Wook on my screen again. He's just such a delight. And I had to pass on D.P.2. But this is a time slip... and I'm still me 😭😭😭
Ack. We'll see.

LOL. Start here. And queens* are embodiments of oppression and class snobbery, so really, are you surprised? 😈

Is the drama set in the 90s? I can’t really tell from the styling. I do like the use of rock rather than more current pop sounds. It looks cute but I’m so jaded by cute promos now that I expect it to actually be about graverobbers or something.

*certain queens, at certain times, may maintain a different standard.

Who exactly am I oppressing, again? Oh right, bad drama writers. They deserve it though.

Choi Hyun Wook is plays his dad, as an 18 year old. So, do the math! 😂

I will be with you on this one Sic. Not generally a genre I would pick up but it will be nice to watch Choi Hyun-wook presumably not throwing punches a la WEAK HERO CLASS 1.
Your D.P. 2 mention reminded me I have a contribution to the ‘Significant Scars’ post.

CHoi Hyun-Wook is an interesting rookie with very different kinds of drama. He was really good in D.P. I think Ryeoun suits better modern dramas than sageuk.

I like both actresses too!

For Juneoh, I hope his role will better than in Bora, because I really didn't like this arc in the drama.

I'm really interested by this drama, Kdramas are soo good for this kind of nostalgic vibe.

Is tvN’s SPARKLING WATERMELON somewhat the reverse of KBS’s 2017 drama HIT THE TOP? In HTT we start in 1993 with Yoon Shi-yoon a vey popular musical artist and time slip to 2017 where he meets up with ‘son’ Kim Min-jae an idol trainee. I really enjoyed it.

I was reading early synopses that mention him having deaf parent and him going back in time befriending his 18 year old dad. some plot summary also mention shin eun soo character is hearing impaired so maybe she is the young version of his mom.

So much happening, but can anyone really live up to Lee Min Ki's or Shin Se gi, I don't think so. So I am okay there is no eyeliner.

Definitely I'm watching this. Time travels + music + retro vibes + Choi Hyun Wook... It seems almost a perfect combo.
