Princess Go Ah-sung seeks her own Love Story in new sageuk

Go Ah-sung, Jang Ryul, Chani

Preparations are underway for TVING’s new romance and racy sageuk The Love Story of Choon-hwa, and the main lineup has been announced, led by Go Ah-sung (Tracer) and Jang Ryul (Bargain).

Our heroine is the wayward (and fictional) princess Hwa-ri (Go Ah-sung), who is not content to simply marry any old suitor that the royal family has chosen. Defying traditions, she journeys beyond the palace walls in order to try her hand at dating – like all the common folk do – and find the perfect husband for herself.

This leads us to our hero Choi Hwan (Jang Ryul). Coming from wealth, he’s the first on the royal list of marriage candidates and the whispering rumors label him as a known Casanova.

I presume Hwa-ri will thus be (briefly) distracted by SF9’s Chani (Under the Queen’s Umbrella), who plays the prestigious Sungkyunkwan scholar Jang-won.

In supporting roles, Hwa-ri’s older brother is crown prince Sohn Woo-hyun (Happiness Battle), who was married at a young age to crown princess Im Hwa-young (A Superior Day).

We also have Han Seung-yeon (Twelve Nights) as Jang-won’s talented younger sister, Hwa-ri’s half sister and rival Do Yeon-jin (Numbers), Hwa-ri’s second brother Kim Taek (The King’s Affection), in addition to rookie actor Bae Yoon-kyu who plays a ~genius~ artist.

Last but not least, we can’t forget the heads of the Joseon royal family – who are also Hwa-ri’s parents – with king Park Won-sang (Oasis) and queen Park Sun-young (The Forbidden Marriage).

Written by Seo Eun-jung (So Not Worth It) with PD Lee Kwang-young (Call It Love) at the helm, TVING’s The Love Story of Choon-hwa is currently slated to release next year in 2024.

The writer from "So Not Worth It" working with the PD from "Call it Love?!" That might be one of the most bizarre pairings behind the camera that I can recall in forever.

I love a Joseon heroine with an unrealistic amount of agency. This looks like it might be fun!

But now I’m going to endeavor to forget all about it until next year when it actually comes out ;)

This promises to be one of those where no one stays in the Joseon period. Sigh!

Almost want to watch it JUST for the PD... and what colour filter they'll pick this time (I'm kidding; SLMOS was also well directed, and also normally directed lmao, so her helming a sageuk could be really engaging visually).

Oh giant baby Kim Taek is back, he was even taller than Rowoon 😂. It was funny he played the oldest brother when he was the youngest. After SF9 Rowoon, he will act with SF9 Chani.

I trust GAS choice. She always chooses interesting dramas.

Sexy romcom about princess running away to do dating samples tasting to pick herself a fully satisfying husband sounds too good to be true. I'll remain safely skeptical for now.

This sounds so fun! I love Go Ah-sung’s choice of roles. I don’t know if it’s her agency that chooses for her or she has the freedom herself, but she’s successfully avoided being typecast and shown off her versatility across genres. Love that for her.

I’m always here for stories centring around Joseon princesses or queens. It’s a nice change of pace from the oversaturation of crown princes and all-powerful kings.

I've love Go Ah Sung since Heard it through the Grapevine and her choices have consistently been fascinating, so I too love that for her.

I am glad to see Han Seung-yeon back in kdramaland.
Channel A’s TWELVE NIGHTS (2018) (Viki US) (12 eps naturally) is my only HSY drama but she and Shin Hyun-soo gave lovely performances and back then there were a faithful few beanies who followed it.
HSY does have previous sageuk experience having appeared in JANG OK JUNG, LIVING BY LOVE (2013) (Viki US).

My last sageuk (JOSEON ATTORNEY) revolved around a princess operating outside the palace.

And we know how that turned out. 😆

Go Ah-sung is one of my faves, but I’m not sure about the male cast.
