Premiere Watch: My Dearest

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Sageuk, melodrama, romance
Episode count: 10 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: Sweeping sageuk, anyone? MBC’s upcoming My Dearest sold itself almost immediately with its teaser poster (if you ask me). Telling the tale of two lovers (Namgoong Min and Ahn Eun-jin) torn apart by a soon-approaching invasion into Joseon, everything about this screams EPIC. The team of two PDs previously worked with Namgoong Min on The Veil (so underrated!) and the screenwriter here is Hwang Jin-young of Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. In fact, the only downside is the two-part split. But for some reason, when a network separates a drama into Part 1 and Part 2 right off the bat (much like Alchemy of Souls), I’m more inclined to give them a pass than I am when they revive an already-aired series for a second go. In turn, though, I expect an important narrative break in the storytelling that would warrant the two-part splitting — not just a random scheduling decision.

TL;DR: Epic war-torn sageuk love story that practically sells itself

Thank you. Do you know how soon Viki puts up the episode after it airs?

These days within a few hours with subs. I don't see the sub % progressing slowly as it used to before on Viki. Looks like they upload after fully subbing the show. I usually have the show subbed by noon US EST timezone

Normally I would stay away from sageuk, but this one promises to be grand and serious so I will check it out. And I love well done war sequences and war strategies.
The casting is solid too.

I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. We've been burned many times before. Although I may not be fond (putting it nicely) of King Injo, I realized that nearly all sageuks set during his reign are moving, heart-wrenching, memorable and epic.
It's good to see Nam back in a sageuk as the lead. I think this role fits him better than his first sageuk. More vulnerable, emotional, etc.

I am anticipating that the Qing emperor will speak in the Manchu language since the interpreter is part of the show. It would be fascinating to hear a language that is not commonly spoken.

I think War of The Arrows featured Manchu language too.
I also hope the drama does not disappoint. I can stomach a little bit of Injo if the story is good.

Yes , "War of the Arrows" was the first. The Jin characters and Moon Chae-won's character.
I heard it briefly in "Cruel Palace."
I hope it doesn't disappoint too. We need at least one good sageuk for the year. 😆

While I've seen Namgoong Min in many dramas before, I haven't seen him in a sageuk. Looking forward to this one.

*heavy sigh* I'm left with only one show to watch currently, and that's not okay at all, so gonna give this a cautious try.

I haven't seen enough of either leads (yup, even NGM) so I'm curious to see their pairing and their sageuk acting. Also I'm very interested in the epic story & setting!

Did not know there will be a break though. Hope it isn't too long.

I think this will be my first non-fusion saguek. I am so pumped up to see the leads together and individually
