News bites: August 26, 2023

Shin Hyun-bin, Moon Sang-min

  • A new rom-com called Cinderella at 2AM is in the works, potentially pairing Shin Hyun-bin (Reborn Rich) and Moon Sang-min (Duty After School) in the leading roles. Based on a web novel and webtoon by the same title, production for the series is still in the early stages. In the meantime, we can expect to see both actors when their current projects go on air, in ENA’s Tell Me You Love Me and tvN’s Wedding Impossible respectively. [Star News, TV Daily]

  • Ma Dong-seok (Police Unit 38, The Roundup: No Way Out) may be returning to the small screen, putting on his hero’s cape again for the new action Twelve. If he accepts, Ma will be playing the character Tae-san, who leads the fight against the big bad monsters. Still in the planning stages, the series is aiming to broadcast sometime next year. [Osen]
  • New stills have dropped for tvN’s Twinkling Watermelon, showcasing our time-slipping and music-loving lead Ryeoun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse). Also starring Choi Hyun-wook (D.P. 2), Seol In-ah (Oasis), and Shin Eun-soo (Summer Strike), the fantasy romance is slated to broadcast on September 25. [News1]

  • Park Ho-san (Taxi Driver 2) confirmed casting for Disney+’s upcoming Han River Police, playing a former police officer who used to be close friends with Kwon Sang-woo (Curtain Call). For reasons yet unknown, he now works on a river barge. Written and directed by Kim Sang-chul, the comedy-action will be launching in just a few weeks on September 13. [Newsen]
  • Netflix’s Plaza Wars has been busy with casting news as well, with Heo Jun-ho (Bloodhounds), Lee Beom-soo (Private Lives), Ahn Gil-kang (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938), and Ahn Se-ho (Glitch) now up to join the lineup. Reports are still mixed on whether So Ji-sub (Doctor Lawyer) has signed on as the lead, but filming is set to begin later this year once the full cast has been finalized. [MBC (1), (2)]
  • Over on tvN, Arthdal Chronicles: Aramun’s Sword has been generously dishing out promos, including character posters and action-packed new teasers: found here and here. Starring Jang Dong-gun (Suits), Lee Jun-ki (Again My Life), Shin Se-kyung (Run On), and Kim Ok-bin (Love to Hate You), the fantasy series will be returning to our screens on September 9 in the weekend slot. 1. The age gap is a lot in this one, I was wondering why I had never heard of him and then I looked up his age and thay he was in the Queen's Umbrella. But it may surprise as a nice Noona romance.

2. I LURVE Ma Dong Seok. So will check it out.

This over 10-year age difference between the actors has no excuse, because in the original it is only 4 years. Will he be playing a character older than his real age? Let's say he plays a 29-year-old (a favorite age for characters in Korean dramas) and she plays a 33-year-old woman? But is it really impossible to find actors with a smaller age gap when the characters are 4 years apart?

Nods head, it is weird casting, I have no idea why they are putting her with such a rookie.

I think SHB may have trouble getting cast opposite more veteran actors after the criticism she got from Reborn Rich. She got widespread complaints about her acting and lack of chemistry with her co-star, and given how widely watched RR was, that negative reception might've caused her a career setback.

1) I'm not fan of Shin Hyun-Bin. I liked Moon Sang-Min in Under The Queen's Umbrella (even if at the end, I would have liked to see his character opened up more). So I can't imagine this pair together. I will wait for the promotion trailer.

2) Ma Dong-seok is back in drama!

3) I'm really excited to watch this one Twinkling Watermelon. Family and romance themes in a retro vibe!

5) It looks like a violent show already.

6) I wonder if I will watch it. Maybe I will test to see the new casting.

I swore to avoid Shin Hyun-Bin after "Warrior Baek Dong Soo." I hope her acting has improved.

She was so useless in this drama... I watched Hospital Playlist 1&2 and Reborn Rich and she had no screen presence. Both actors she played a romance with were very good in their last dramas with their costars, but didn't have any chemistry with her... So I'm not confident to like her in her next drama. 😅

1. UTQU's Moon Sang-joon...not again🤦🏽
2. It's so nice to have Ma Dong-seok again on the small screen.
4. Of course I am going to watch Han River Police. With another favorite added to the mix, this can never go wrong for me.
5. Who's idea was it to place Plaza and Wars side by side?

Let me add to the chorus of the skeptical about the pairing of Shin Hyun-bin, who is a solid but not great actress, and Moon Sang-min, who had impressive gravitas in "Under the Queen's Umbrella" for someone so young, but has not yet done comedy. And as I've said before, I don't have a kneejerk negative reaction to age differences between actors unless once they're on-screen the characters just look unbelievable together, so I can't say for sure until then that this casting is a bad move because of the age difference. But I can certainly say that based on what I've seen of these two that I'm not instantly thinking they'll vibe well on-screen. Different energies plus the age gap make me hope the casting director goes in another direction on one or both of them.
