If you’re like me, still wishing there was a Season 2 of Signal, then this drama might just scratch that itch. In MBC’s upcoming crime thriller Chief Inspector 1963, Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) stars as a detective whose righteous spirit and unwavering moral compass often get him in trouble. Interestingly, the drama is a prequel to the drama Chief Inspector, which aired during the 70s and 80s. Not only did it run for nearly 900 episodes, but it also recorded 70% viewership, making it a household name across the nation. Whoa, this show certainly has big shoes to fill.
Rewinding a decade into the past, we’ll meet our protagonist Park Young-han (Lee Je-hoon) before he became the titular chief inspector. Railing against the world for its callous crushing of human dignity, Young-han believes in karmic retribution, and he’ll make sure those criminals get their just desserts. He may seem like he’s full of hot air, but he isn’t all talk — his keen insight and unwavering resolve prove that he has the skills to persevere even under pressure.
Opposite him is Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet) as the detective Kim Sang-soon, who’s made “my way or the highway” his personal motto. Having grown up in poverty, he’s learnt to rely solely on his grit — and his unapologetically unorthodox methods have earned him the title of the police station’s crazy dog. Just when Sang-soon’s energy begins to wane in the face of ubiquitous corruption, Young-han enters his life, creating a turning point.
As for the rest of the police station, we have Choi Woo-sung (Melancholia) as the team’s ace Jo Kyung-hwan. Don’t let his amiable disposition and polite demeanor fool you, because his intolerance for injustice has him charging at cases like a bulldozer. High-five, Young-han?
On the other end of the impulsivity spectrum, we have the level-headed tactician Seo Ho-jung, played by Yoon Hyun-soo (Seasons of Blossom). A brilliant strategist, Ho-jung has a sharp mind and elite credentials to back his schemes up — except his hubris often has him making irreparable mistakes. Through Young-han, he’ll face his life’s greatest challenge, but it seems his initial apprehension may soon turn into an opportunity for humility and growth.
Directed by Kim Sung-hoon (Rampant), and written by Kim Young-shin with Park Jae-bum (Vincenzo) overseeing the production as a creator, Chief Inspector 1963 aims to broadcast next year.

I was asking because I have no idea. 😅
I remember in Life On Mars, there was a female cop but the story took place in 1988. They wanted her to make coffee for them and copies...

This looks great and I will be there (hopefully). Now if CHIEF INSPECTOR 1963 is filmed in black and white that really would be gutsy.

Ok, at first glance, why did Lee Dong-hwi look like Kim Nam-gil and Choi Woo-sung remind me of Kim Woo-bin? Missing these two much? Why yes I am. However, this looks to be engaging. Its one to definitely check out when tomorrow (next year) comes.

Lee Dong-hwi* played a very convincing backstabbing weasel in Big Bet , curious to see him as a cop.
Lee Je-hoon was also in Big Bet, a “bad bastard” as well.
* The drama special Red Teacher w/ Lee Dong -Hwi and Jung So-Min 🥰 is worth watching.

It was a guest appearance , (as a bad guy), if the drama has a Part 3 , (which the ending suggests), he’d be back.
So far no official word for a part 3 as of yet though.
Big Bet is about Korean gamblers (criminals) operating a casino in the Philippines.
Son Suk-ku plays a Korean cop working as a liaison in the Philippines, he tries to investigate crimes , however, local officials are corrupt and protect the gangsters.

My only point of reference for the original show is from Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, because all the more senior cops in Gook-doo’s team watch it for inspiration! Love this cast, and it will be fun to have a way of connecting with a cultural touchstone that I probably will never encounter any other way.

Ah, was that the show the cop guys were watching in the squad room in JTBC's STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON (2017) (Viki US)? Lol the Team Leader said he was an 'analog' guy.
O/T. With all due respect here is a personal favorite bts pic of the cops in SWDBS (in black and white no less!);
