News bites: July 5, 2023

Lee Jia, Kang Ki-young

  • The day has finally come. After stealing scene after scene in supporting roles since who knows how long, our hot-in-demand Kang Ki-young (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) – together with Lee Jia (Pandora: Beneath the Paradise) – is headlining JTBC’s Amazing Troubleshooter (working title). Production is still in the planning stages, with Jung Hee-sun writing and PD Park Jin-seok (Sell Your Haunted House) attached to direct. [JTBC]

  • After Sohn Seok-gu (D.P. 2) turned it down, Kim Sun-ho (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) is now considering a role in the Hong Sisters’ (Alchemy of Souls) next drama Can This Love Be Translated alongside Han So-hee (Soundtrack #1), who is also considering. Directing for the romance will be helmed by PD Yoo Young-eun (Red Heart). [News1]

  • The first character stills have dropped for KBS’s upcoming sports drama My Lovely Boxer (previously Pure Boxer), featuring our two leads Lee Sang-yub (Eve) and Kim So-hye (How to Buy a Friend). Coming to our screens with a story about second chances and chasing your dreams, the series is slated to air in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [Newsen (1), (2)]
  • Over on tvN, love is in the air for Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm 2) and Hwang Min-hyun (Alchemy of Souls) in the newest poster for My Lovely Liar. Following Delightfully Deceitful in the Monday-Tuesday slot, the fantasy rom-com is set to premiere this month on July 31. [News1]

  • Gong Myung (Lovers of the Red Sky) is reviewing an offer for his first project post-army, potentially joining So Ji-sub (Doctor Lawyer) in the action-noir Plaza Wars. The webtoon adaptation is aiming to start filming later this year once casting has all been finalized. [Ilgan Sports, Osen]
  • Go Yoon-jung (Alchemy of Souls) is on the casting table for a new project under PD Shin Won-ho (Hospital Playlist), who will be taking on a creator role. With production still in the early stages, the team could only confirm that it will be a new story and would not be a prequel or spin-off of a prior series. [News1]
  • New character posters have come out for Netflix’s D.P. 2, showcasing the second season’s main players: Jung Hae-in (Connect), Gu Kyo-hwan (Monstrous), and Kim Sung-kyun (Divorce Attorney Shin), in addition to Sohn Seok-gu (Big Bet), Ji Jin-hee (The Road: The Tragedy of One), and Kim Ji-hyun (Thirty-Nine). The military drama’s new installment will be launching on July 28. [News]

Judging from that viral video of Kim Seon Ho and Han So Hee at the AAA 2022, they'll make a cute pair.

Heavens have heard me OMG BB and one of my favorite actresses might be the leads in a same drama I’m speechless and in tears.

Is Kim Sun-ho already out of scandal jail or am I being naïve in thinking he was in there at all to begin with?

Re My Lovely Liar -- does the series have have a yet-to be-disclosed android element? If not, why does the poster make the leads look like Japanese sex dolls?

There's no way in the world I'm going to do an image search to verify your Lovely Liar comparison 😂, but the poster resembles the heavily filtered, waxy, artificial looks we've seen for other recent shows like Love In Contract and Love Is for Suckers. The Law Café's poster had a similar pinkish cast, although oddly the main one for Call It Love (aka The Pink Drama) did not.

Kim Sun Ho pretty much voluntarily stepped out of the limelight when the scandal broke out, even though fans were clamoring to "protect good boy" (or something to that effect). I'm not sure about Korean fans, but international fans seem to be more forgiving when it comes to artists' personal lives. Maybe his team is taking it slow re-introducing him to Korea, but he did a bunch of fan meetings internationally and was received well.

Want to watch Can This Love Be Translated but it is from Hong sisters whom I don't find to have the same joke frequency with me, never pass 1 ep of their dramas.

1. If this was pre-brownface, I would have been overjoyed and over the moon. Now, I'm still happy to see him finally make the envied career-jump, but my excitement has certainly dulled a little. *Sigh* being a South Asian fan can be tough at times.

2. My love-hate relationship with the Hong sisters aside, Kim Seon-ho's last romcom script wasn't the best and Son Seok-ku turning it down doesn't exactly give me confidence...

3. I hope it's just a mentor-mentee relationship and not a romance because a quick google search tells me that Lee Sang-yeop and Kim So-hye have a seventeen year age-gap, which is more than a little uncomfortable. Especially since she looks pretty young IMO.

4. Now this I am SUPER excited for! I hope I'll get the time to watch it because it has slowly become one of my most anticipated dramas of the year somehow. Please be good please be good.

5. 10/10, no notes. Perfect title.

6. Shin Won-ho??!? Sign me the fuck up. And I'm one of those people who actually really likes Go Yoon-jung so this is fantastic news.

7. The first season was so beyond impressive and difficult to watch, I'm not sure how season two could live up to my sky-high expectations, but I'm still looking forward to it with bated breath.

Ah I didn’t know there was a brownface fuckup. How disappointing.

Disappointing, indeed. I wrote a whole rant about it on my fan wall when it happened because I was so upset. It was brownface along with an incredibly inaccurate and offensive portrayal of an Afghan person. Korea has leagues to go when it comes to depicting foreign cultures.

Oh no, I didn't hear about the brown face, that is so GROSS. Man, I don't like that.

Knowing it’s the PD from the Reply series, Hospital Playlist and Prison Playbook, whatever the focus, unless something ridiculous has happened to the PD in real life, I finally have a guaranteed feel the joy watch❤️ Looking forward to hearing more and more importantly relaxing into a good story with characters I will love. I am literally grinning in anticipation.

I don't need any more info about 1. The leads have safely troubleshot everything and its okayed.
Kang Ki-young 🤭🤭🤭🤭

2. I'm kinda glad Sohn Seok-ku turned this down... Only for Kim Seon-ho to pick it up🤦🏽😩😂. I'm back to praying this is a solid script.
P.S. If the Hong Sisters wrote Sohn Seok-ku's role the way they wrote Alchemy of Souls' Jang Uk, then I have no problem. I can deal with Sohn Seok-ku excess sugar anytime.

Wait. What?
Kang Ki-young as a ML?
Kim Seon-ho potentially in a Hong Sisters’ drama?
Gong Myung and So Ji-sub possibly sharing the screen in an action noir?

*proceeds to clap, squee, and chant victoriously in own mind*

This sounds very exciting indeed!

Heavens have heard me. After these two long years of no BB in K dramaland, things have been bleak *pretends to sob*.

But now he’s considering a lead role in a drama opposite Han So-hee OMG two of my super favorites might be in the same show I’m now over the moon. Please accept it, BB. Hong Sisters aside, let me see your face and you’re acting on the small screen again. It’s been way too long.

I’ve survived AoS, so come what May, Hong Sisters.

I love that for his first lead role KKY is paired with LJ and that the drama sounds interesting itself. Huzzah for good actors and good plot.

Same! Especially for Kim So-hyun. MDL says her character runs a tarot café - although Soompi says it's a trot café 😆, which sounds like more fun whatever that is. Maybe Divorce Attorney Shin and his buddies will stop by for a singalong.

Same here! It’s been so long since Kim So-hyun has done a proper romcom and the setup seems genuinely interesting.

Really pleased for KKY. He's been such a scene-stealer in the supporting roles I've seen him in.

I've thought Kang Ki-young was super good-looking ever since I first saw him in Bring It On Ghost. I can't wait to see him as a ML! Even if it's yet ANOTHER divorce lawyer drama, lol.

So many to be excited for! I am loving all of the except for the last one cause I have a hard time with good guys getting beat up and picked on for no good reason. Its too hard to watch ordinary guys getting beaten down. My heart aches for real life victims of army violence or any violence when they are just doing what they have to do.
