Premiere Watch: Miraculous Brothers

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Mystery, fantasy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This fly-under-the-radar JTBC drama stars the ever-loveable Jung Woo and newbie on the block Bae Hyun-sung in what might be the perfect bromance dynamic.* Jung Woo’s character is a struggling novelist, and Bae Hyun-sung is the young man who he finds himself aligned with. But even more than just a regular ol’ abandoned puppy, the boy has amnesia… and an empathetic superpower. Cue: Hyung and dongsaeng joining forces to help the people in pain and despair around them, and solve a couple of mysteries while they’re at it. The drama promises to be heartwarming and moving, and from the writer of Beautiful World and Memory — I believe them.

*Please reference their adorable matching outfits at the premiere for evidence of this.

TL;DR: Fantasy bromance, anyone?

I am curious about this one but also concerned so will let this weeks episode and potentially next weeks get released and see the general response as heavy mystery means I am out but if the main focus is on sweet healing and I am in and happy.

The posters seem quite dark, which means, it will be dark ....

Something I learned after seeing Big Mouth, Why Her, and Good Bad Mother's posters haha, the posters signed on the tonality of the series!

Yes, I have picked up that vibe too hence my hesitation. I can take some kinds of dark. The good bad mother dark tones were tolerable and I actually enjoyed it as the other elements more than balanced it out but Crash course in romance was a early drop even though I really wanted to watch that one.

I find this sooo fascinating, @reply1988! I think we’re inversely “dark-tones/creep-factor-intolerant!!!!” 🫠

Interesting perspective! @reply1988 : I like a dark tone, and the promise of it pushed me to watch the Good Bad Mother til the end (I thoroughly regret almost every second of it, but it's a story for another day).

I hope that ‘another day’ comes soon, I am intrigued now…😊

Heartwarming bromance and empathy superpowers sound like a nice side dish to the other shows on at the moment.

This is on Viki in the US.

More accurately it will be on Viki- it is still listed as "coming soon". Which is a shame because I wanted to start watching it.

It was licensed so late that I am sure the subtitling team and all the rest is being put together now.

You are correct- when I was finally able to winkle it out of Viki it had the notation that "This Show is Looking For A Channel Manager". Not a good sign if you want to see the show now.

Viki, Viki, Viki, why do you insist on playing these availability games?

Thanks for finally licensing JTBC’s THE MIRACLE BROTHERS now going under the title MIRACULOUS BROTHERS.
I will be here because of Bae Hyung-sung. What a great opportunity for the young actor.
Jung Woo is a blank slate for me. I haven’t seen any of his work.
One concern is the possibility of a lot of yelling early on which is a big turn off for me. I loved writer-nim Kim Ji-woo’s BEAUTIFUL WORLD (2019) (Viki US).
(As an aside in MyDramaList BEAUTIFUL WORLD (2019) is listed as Kim Ji-woo’s most recent drama. I often wonder what writers or directors have been doing when there are long gaps in projects for them.)

Jung Woo was Trash in Reply 1994. He was great in it.

I wonder if a lot of people decided to sit out the pandemic working. Who wanted to deal with all the restrictions and expose themselves unnecessarily if you were lucky enough to have the money to tide you over it was a good time for reflection. They probably have a rest period after making a drama and then the two things collided.

That is a good theory why around 2020 there may be gaps in production or projects for artists. We all know the appearance of the coronavirus was a disaster for the performing arts. I observed it first hand in NYC.
Life moves on. How soon we (I) forget.

Who is the boy? Bae Hyunsung? I’ve google fatigue so haven’t looked up his real age (SK’s adoption of International age standardises ages in most contexts. Hurrah!) but he doesn’t look like a minor?

Why he should look a minor?

He was born in 1999.

Because he was referred to as a ‘boy’ and not as a man.

Maybe I took it literally and shouldn’t have.

Me too, @dncingemma, this threw me off a little too. I was also excepting a much younger character. But then I remembered the Kpop fan world happily calls their favourite stars "baby" so I assumed I was just being too literal.

It was written young man before. 😅

@kurama: I must have read it far too quickly as “the young man” didn’t register but “the boy” did so that’s why.

1

@dncingemma As you know, all men are just innocent boys at heart, with empathetic superpowers.
