News bites: June 17, 2023

  • It’s official! After rumors and rumors of rumors, full Squid Game 2 casting is confirmed for Netflix’s sequel with Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-heon, and Wie Ha-hoon reprising their roles. And for the much-anticipated new players, we have — wait for it — Im Shi-wan (Summer Strike), Kang Haneul (Curtain Call), new Netflix it-boy Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), and Yang Dong-geun (The Forbidden Marriage). Depending on how you feel about Squid Game, this is either the best or worst thing you have read all day. Watch the full video announcement here. [Newsis]

Clockwise: Joo Ji-hoon, Choo Young-woo, Jung Jae-kwang, Ha Young, Yoon Kyung-ho

  • Netflix announced their lineup for the medical series The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call (previously, Severe Trauma Center: Golden Hour), which stars Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan), Choo Young-woo (Oasis), Yoon Kyung-ho (Cleaning Up), Ha Young (Taxi Driver 2), and Jung Jae-kwang (My Perfect Stranger). Based on a popular webnovel, which was also made into a webtoon, the drama adaptation will have filmmaker Lee Do-yoon (Confession) at the helm with scripts by Choi Tae-kang (Adamas). [News1]

  • Unsettling us with more promos, SBS released a new poster and video teaser of our possessed heroine Kim Tae-ri (Twenty Five Twenty One) in the upcoming horror Revenant. Also starring Oh Jung-se (Uncle) and Hong Kyung (Weak Hero Class 1), the occult thriller follows Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 in the weekend slot, premiering next week on June 23. [SBS]

  • The great Kim Hye-soo (Under the Queen’s Umbrella) is considering the leading role in the new underdog office-comedy Trigger (working title). If she accepts, Kim will be playing the host of a mystery show, similar to the real-life SBS program Unanswered Questions – which is hosted by Kim Sang-joong (The Banker). Directed by PD Yoo Sun-dong (The Uncanny Counter 2), the story will follow Kim’s character and the production team as they scramble to fight cancellation. [Sports Chosun]
  • A new series called Melo House is in the works, with offers out to Ji Jin-hee (The Road: The Tragedy of One), Kim Ji-soo (High Class), Sohn Na-eun (Agency), and Min-ho (The Fabulous). In a story about making amends and the bonds of both family and love, production is still in the planning stages with filming set to begin once casting has been finalized. [News1]

Ji Jin-hee, Kim Ji-soo, Sohn Na-eun, Min-ho

  • Channel A is planning a new romance as well, courting Donghae (Oh! Young-shim) and Lee Seol (One Ordinary Day) for our main pair in Man and Woman (working title). Aiming to broadcast in the latter half of this year, the webtoon adaptation sets off with our lead couple broken up after seven years together. The story will then explore the realistic ups and downs of dating relationships. [Xports News]
  • Together with a gloomy new poster, JTBC’s latest teaser for Miracle Brothers takes us through all the emotions of our amnesiac tele-empath Bae Hyun-sung (Gaus Electronics) – while Jung Woo (Mental Coach Jegal) tries to help. Taking over the Wednesday-Thursday slot, the mystery-fantasy premieres later this month on June 28. [Sports Donga]

Im Si-wan's casting in Squid Game 2 is the best news. He is going to kill this role. I need him to play a character who we first assume is meek but then turns on the other players in a plot twist. Im Si-wan does psycho so well as he has shown in the film Unlocked, Hell Is Other People, and the childhood portion of Man from the Equator.

Oh My God, YES. Misaeng was where it started for me, I became obsessed with ISW. So glad they get to work together again. Though this might mean we'll have to fall in love and watch them die

Me neither. The only thing I remember about SG is that elementary school teachers in my country being concerned about kids watching it and copy the games and even getting hurt because of it... Find it sad that this type of kdrama getting international attention and end up having a social negative affect...

Donghae could tell the story on the level of the daughter in Dear my friends which I can handle as a serious slice of life if it has good friends/family it could be an interesting watch. Trigger, Trauma code and Melo house are also being long listed.
Revenant is spelling out in capitals exactly what it is is and why this is one I will be running, land speed record style away from😱.

Considering I'd rather erase Squid Game from the face of the Earth than ever read those words again... worst news.

I think I'll delete the internet for a month when it airs. Sigh.

Pardon my intrusion @lordcobol but I have to ask. Why do you guys write Arsedal instead of Arthdal. This million-dollar thought bugs me anytime I see Arsedal in Arthdal's stead.

I for one am mocking the show that deserves it more than any other I have seen.
"Arse" per a quick internet search = "VULGAR SLANG•BRITISH
noun
1. a person's buttocks or anus.
2. a stupid, irritating, or contemptible person."

The made themselves an even easier target early on by calling the show "Aseudal".

I have written 10000 words on Squid Game, (and that, for the record, is not an exaggeration in the slightest, that is quite literal), I need not say anything more but the simplest and firmest statements.

(Re AC2. I did watch AC (2019) (18 long episodes), have no desire and will not watch AC2.)

"elaborate" "comments" 🤭 sorry, when you see it you'll understand why this is so funny to me. Pffffffft 😅

Behold, arguably the most outrageous and ridiculous thing I've ever done for a kdrama;

The dB post, posted in all its formatting error glory in the frenzied haze of a 14 hr writing day:

Or the direct google doc link, which is in the above dB post as well, but might just be easier direct, depending on your choice of experience:

2. With Adamas's scriptwriter, I guess this will be better than Jirisan for Joo Ji-hoon.

4. Comedy series? Sign me up. *wait wait* The great Kim Hye-soo. Sign me up again.

5. I only have one prayer. Nothing should be chasing Ji Jin-hee nor is he chasing something or running away from something. This man has better not be running in here, again.

I like that still poster for Miracle Brothers.

But Im Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon and Kang Haneul is.
I'll give it a try.

1) I'm not so interested to watch Squid Game except for Gong Yoo slapping people :p

2) I like The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call cast. I dropped Jirisan and Oasis, I hope they will get a better role.

3) I'm not sure I will watch it. I like the actors, but the drama is not really my favourite genre.

5) Who thought it was good idea to pair Sohn Na-eun with Min-ho? Neither of them is good...

6) This drama is intriguing.

The producers of Squid Game just seem to try too hard at this point. It was stated since the beginning they didn’t have a vision for more than 1 season.

I really hope Ji Jin-hee and Kim Ji-soo are the main leads, not the younger actors.

Squid Game 2 is all about the money. Success breeds a second season or sequel. The vast majority of sequels are not as good as the original. The nuts n bolts of the story was finished in SG1 so what could be the twist? The players revolting against the guards?

I wonder what new games, if any, will be introduced.

No. 7. JTBC’s MIRACLE BROTHERS. MDL reports this will be 10 episodes. Still no information on legal availability in the US. Fingers crossed. This is the third upcoming kdrama on my to watch list with the other two being
MBC’s NUMBERS. F/S (12 eps) (Viki US). Episode one airs June 23.
KBS’s HEARTBEAT. M/T (16 eps) (Amazon Prime Video). Episode one airs June 26.

Thrilled thrilled thrilled with the new casting!

I'll watch anything with Park Sung-hoon at this point, because I started following his career more during Memorials and was blown away by how different he was in The Glory.

Misaeng's whole cast has had my undying attention since that show, so even if I hated Squid Game (I didn't, but wasn't wowed), I'd watch this season for sure. :)

And well, Gong Yoo. And well, Wie Ha-hoon.

1. Mixed feelings about a second season (I thought season 1 told a full story), but I love the new cast. Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul and Park Sung-hoon are all favourites of mine and the thought of them becoming international stars is both cool and terrifying lol. Guess I have to start gatekeeping soon.

2. Yay for Joo Ji-hoon, but did it have to be a medical drama? *Sigh*

3. Love the poster and the orange-red-black colour scheme. Definitely excited for this!

4. Kim Hye-soo in a comedy? Sign me up. I would totally watch a variety show hosted by her.

5. Ji Jin-hee and Kim Ji-soo are fine, but between Na-eun and Min-ho… who is doing the acting?

6. Dong-hae is surprisingly in demand this year.

7. Not gonna lie, I hate the vertical design choice for this poster. It just looks weird and off-putting to me.

It'll be terrifying once all my non-drama watching friends and acquaintances start talking about them. People getting to gush over Park Sung-hoon at the peak of his fame... I was there from the beginning! Down in the trenches, begging into the ether for him to break out from his string of evil suppporting roles. They just won't get it.

*shudders just thinking about it* I feel ya. Hence my 1-3 month internet detox.
If I have to go every form of social media or just platform and see fanart, and every kind of trend, and clickbait videos, and reviews from every corner, again, combined with this^, and my feelings about the first season, I will go more than insane. I cannot handle it. Not again.

(Also can I just say how much I appreciate that you understand this^, what you were talking about, this whole^^, concept, already, because it's so hard to explain sometimes. As my friend would say "They like/know the shiny, but not the gold!".)

@reply1988 oh thank you! Haha I'll tell her you said so.
And no it's not a cultural phrase, just one of hers.
She said she probably had "Tolkien on the brain".

Love that explanation 😊

I was hyped up when I watched Squid Game, but meh by the end of it. I was going to check out the second season if my sister wanted to. (She watched the first one with me. And we rarely watch anything together. XD) BUT omg, Kang Haneul!! Now I'm super curious about his character. ;-;

Damn, this almost has me tempted to watch Squid Game. I love Im Si-wan (never seen him play psychos though) and Wi Ha-jun (I know he was in the first season but I thought his character died). And the guy from Into the Ring, too!

I'm also tempted to watch Squid Game just because it is the only kdrama I've ever seen go mainstream. Like, everyone I knew was talking about a Kdrama and, although it upset me that this was the one to go mainstream when I had zero interest in it, that was pretty cool.
