Netflix whets our appetite for the rest of their 2023 K-content

Netflix is back with a rather attention-grabbing sizzle reel for the rest of their 2023 slate, which means series that only had a lone still or two now have actual footage.

In typical Netflix fashion it’s hard to look away, and there is a little bit of something for everyone. We are also promised “emotions we’ve never felt before” which is rather a bold statement, eh?

Here’s a quick run-through of what’s coming up. For a slightly more verbose take on the titles read the initial 2023 slate announcement post.

Drama: Celebrity
Release date: June 30, 2023
Need to know: Park Kyu-young as an overnight social media influencer with some dark secrets to unfurl in the midst of her new glam lifestyle.

Drama: D.P. 2
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Jung Hae-in and Gu Kyo-hwan return for more harrowing missions. Brace yourselves.

Drama: Mask Girl
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Looks even weird than the premise, which is Nana and Go Hyun-jung playing a famous vlogger who hides behind her mask, because trauma.

Drama: A Time Called You
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Jeon Yeo-bin and Ahn Hyo-seop star in the remake of the Taiwanese drama Some Day or One Day. In case you weren’t already excited.

Drama: Song of the Bandits
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Kim Nam-gil as a 1920s rebel and freedom fighter. (I’m in it for the terrain and horse-riding alone.)

Drama: Doona!
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Campus romance between Suzy and Yang Se-jong. They are pretty.

Drama: Daily Dose of Sunshine
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Park Bo-young as the actual title incarnate, and a nurse at a psych ward.

Drama: Sweet Home 2
Release date: Q4 2023
Need to know: Live to fight another day?

Drama: Gyeongseong Creature
Release date: Q3 2023
Need to know: Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee star in this action-adventure-thriller set in the 1940s, and the hype is high.

And there are Korean films on the list as well:

  • Believer 2 (Cho Jin-woong, Cha Seung-won, Han Hyo-joo) — Q4 2023
  • Ballerina (Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Ji-hoon) — Q4 2023

Who is the guy in the poster Daily Dose of Sunshine? He doesn’t look like Yeo Woo Jin neither Jang Dong Yoon.

Chang Ryul (The Golden Spoon, My Name). I also gasped to see him on the poster because he's amazing.

Now you’re saying it I can see it’s him. At first I a bit confused because I know the ML is YWJ and JDY but why it’s not them in the poster.

Because it's not a poster. It's just a screencap from the preview.

Dear Netflix, I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... So nope, your cheap trick marketing ain't gonna work on me, try more humble and sophisticated approach next year.

No proper trailer for SONG OF THE BANDITS yet, which probably means late Q3 *sigh*. Will consider CELEBRITY if reviews are good. GYEONSEONG CREATURE's better be at least 20% as good as its hype or we'll have to declare it 2nd HWARANG lol.

Why everything on the second half of the year?

I'm kinda excited to watch everything except Sweet Home, I didn't watch the first season. Otherwise, I'm not convinced by Ahn Hyo-Seop's way to talk, it sounds bland.

I get worried that with Netflix steering the projects their K-dramas are looking less and less like K-dramas and looking more and more like Netflix dramas.

My top two are Doona! and Daily Dose of Sunshine.
I'll also watch the second seasons of D.P. and Sweet Home, although without Lee Do-hyun, I'm way less invested.
I'm watching Gyeonseong Creature only for its costumes and sets because I love this time period.
I'm going to skip A Time Called You.

I feel like DP S1 said what it wanted it say. Tho selfishly I’m not complaining for getting more Gu Kyo-hwan, also more exposure might mean getting a leading role soon?

I've been anticipating "Daily Dose of Sunshine" for months, "Gyeonseong Creature" looks amazing, and "Song of the Bandits" is set in my favorite period so I'm in for that reason alone. I avoided "DP" for a long time because I worried I wouldn't be able to sleep after watching, and that turned out to be a well founded fear. But it was so good I don't regret watching it, and will definitely check out the second season.

No interest in "Sweet Home 2"--too much blood and gore for me--or "Celebrity"--I feel like I've already seen that show, in fictional or documentary form, a thousand times. I fear "A Time Called You" is going to be long on the cringe and short on the clever, plus it's a remake of a close-to-flawless original, and that's never promising.

I'm confused about "Doona"--hasn't Suzy outgrown campus romances? Or is she playing a professor having a relationship with a student? Please no.

And I agree--"Mask Girl" just looks weird.

In Doona, Suzy is playing an ex-idol who lives in the same building than the ML.

I'm going to check out nearly all of these. The only ones that don't immediately spark my interest are Celebrity (though with Park Gyu-Young as the FL I may check it out...) and Mask Girl. The rest all look great or are continuations of already great shows (Sweet Home and D.P. second season yeeeeeees!).

Yang Se Jong is playing a sweet character again... He is good at it, but I want to see him in an intense role. Where is Duel when I need it?

I am kind of disappointed also that YSJ chose this drama as his first post military project. At age 30 he will be playing a college student which no doubt he can pull off but a romantic drama would not been my first choice for him.

O/T Your mention of his great multi-character performance in DUEL (2017) (5 stars) leads me to share with those who have not seen it the video of Jang Se-jong’s incredible audition for DUEL on Youtube:

Duel was so hard to watch. YSJ was amazing in it, and I have been watching quite a lot of dark shows in recent years but I couldn't go past ep 8. It was really really hard to watch.

Unfortunately DUEL does not seem to be available on a legal stream (in the US anyway).
My notes tell me that I watched it on the late DramaFever (RIP).

I think both Yang Se Jong and Yeo Jin Goo excel in intense and dramatic roles. Hopefully YSJ's next project will be a good thriller. But I will still watch him in anything.

I understand him. After 2 years of army and his last drama was My Country, it seems normal he needs something lighter.

For his career, it's a good choice. It's a Netflix drama, with the PD of Crash Landing on You and Suzy who is very sucessful.

I want to watch Someday or One Day (Taiwan) before the release of A Time Called you.
By the way, Kang Hoon's dear co-fans, he is in the drama.

I'm interested in Doona and Song of Bandits too. And I want to watch Sweet Home 1 and Uncanny Counter 1 before the second seasons.

Where is Hip/Behind Your Touch (Lee Min-ki, Han Ji-min and Su-ho)? I think it will be taking over the slot of King The Land once it’s finished in August.

I know Ahn Hyo-seop is not going to live up to Greg Hsu's performance, but does Netflix have to pick that scene for the teaser? He sounds so lifeless. If that teaser is deemed good I'm dreading more how the drama will turn out.

I'm really looking forward to Celebrity and Mask Girl. Mask Girld could be really good or really bad.

I've convinced myself that LDH's character is going to return in Sweet Home 2 and that's mainly what's been keeping the hype going for me. I've convinced myself so much to the point that I don't know what I'll do if it doesn't happen 😭

And final notes: ❤️ 💕 🥰 🤩 ❤️ 💕 🥰 🤩 ❤️ PARK SEO JOON!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤️ 💕 🥰 🤩 ❤️ 💕 🥰 🤩 ❤️

it all looks good. Just that i can never seem to get into most of netflix's shows. it just doesn't grab me. I'm still trying to get through crazy in love, glory and some of the big ones dominating discussions. Doesnt OCN make dramas anymore. Has it shut down? changed hands?
