[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Significant objects

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

This week’s treasure:

Significant objects.

Your mission:

Locate all the treasures, trinkets, objects, or other prized possessions that signify and draw our attention to relationships between characters. These could be items that establish a long-lost connection — such as the pocket watch that appears in King the Land, given to our hero by his mother long ago. Or, they might be objects that help verify a character’s identity when seen by someone else (we’re looking at you, time-travel dramas).

Thanks to @marysadanaga for this treasure hunt idea!

Reference drama:

King the Land (Episode 3)

In She was Pretty, I believe there was old photo of theirs together. Or some box. Isn’t this what she finds and they know they had a childhood connection?

Are you thinking of a puzzle piece? As a child, the male lead gives the puzzle piece to the female lead so they can finish the puzzle when they meet again.

😅
We have a photo, frame, a puzzle piece and box. I think we are winning here!

5

Apparently, I am obsessed with this show because I seem to know all the minutiae!!🤣

So Hye Jin finds the puzzle piece in a box that is stored at her parents’ place (when she’s looking for something else).

It is used at one point to deepen the mistaken identity situation. And it is also used in one of my favourite scenes in the office, when she tries to retrieve it discretely.

The rest of the puzzle is actually complete (minus the missing piece) in his hotel room, and is displayed in an expensive glass case.😊 She shatters the entire case by accident at one point.🤣

The front of the puzzle piece shows the face of the hidden woman in the Renoir painting - this alludes to the fact that Hye Jin was hidden in plain sight all along. It’s also part of the theme of the show - that people who aren’t always front and centre are just as important.

On the back of that puzzle piece, young Sung Joon had drawn a picture of an umbrella because she is ‘his umbrella’ - she had protected him from the rain and helped him when he had a panic attack, which is what led them to becoming best friends as children.

He then uses the puzzle piece later on in the show in a sweet and meaningful way.😭 Honestly, I loved the way this show felt like it was written and complete before they started filming. It meant that there were threads and symbols that ran throughout the show.

The other significant object in their relationship is the onion that he leaves on her desk secretly when she has a cold (and 2nd ML has beat him to buying her medication). She puts the onion into a glass with water and it grows healthily!🤣 She draws a happy face on it, and talks to it, but after she has left (he fired in a rage), he draws a sad face on the onion and sends her a photo as part of trying to invite her back to her old position.

What is So Hye Jin doing in this drama 🤔

1

Ok bet character name is Kim Hye Jin 😅
I shd stop writing comments before having my morning caffeine.

Ah. So this was the show with the onion. Wasn’t there another show. Did greatest love also have an onion that the ML was trying to grow?

4

@mayhemf, an excellent example of why punctuation matters!!😂😂😂 I really should have used a comma after ‘So’, but now I’ve rewritten the script of an entire drama!😅

4

@mayhemf, I haven’t seen Greatest Love, but in She Was Pretty, Sung Joon grows his own onion in his hotel room at one point, when his feelings for Hye Jin are also growing. It’s important because he doesn’t realise yet that she is his childhood friend. There’s a scene where he throws it in the bin, and it symbolises a specific decision he’s making. (I’m trying not to give too much away, in case there are people who don’t want to be spoiled.😅)

The other show I love and rewatch uncountable times is Romance is a Bonus Book. In that one, the 2nd ML is gifted a a potted green onion plant by the FL, one of her few possessions. He grows it successfully, and as a gesture of his feelings for her (and apology), he has a green onion cuddly toy made for her. I have wanted that cuddly toy ever since I first watched the show. I don’t know why I love dramas that feature onions prominently?!?!?🤣🤣🤣

I also love the tomato plant in Crash Landing on You, so there seems to be a theme here.🧐🤔

6

Thanks for giving the full explanation so no one is left hanging with this! @panshel, @bbstl, and @mayhemf you would make a great team playing either Pictionary, Charades or Taboo😊

3

Thank you so much for the full story and an excellent laugh about the missing comma 🤣

3

Just because I can’t resist it, I’m going to choose Park Sae-ro-yi’s father’s watch in Itaewon Class. The timepiece sits on Sae-ro-yi’s wrist for almost all of the drama, reminding him of where he’s come from, what he’s lost, and why he’s fighting. It also signifies the importance of playing the long-game.

One of my favorite examples of this is the moon rabbit keychain charm from Thirty But Seventeen ❤️ The charm connects the leads' past, and is a symbol of their reconnection in the present. At the end of the drama, the ML gifts the FL with a copy of the charm (she had given him the original), so they both have one, symbolizing their love. I think it's a really sweet use of a special object.

FIGHT MY WAY
Ae-ra’s passion for the mic, her dream was to hold the microphone in front of her and speak to a crowd. That’s what truly brought her most satisfaction and joy. However with societal expectations a ‘valid’ microphone job meant being a TV announcer. Thus she pursued this path only to be rejected many times due to a very rigged game. Not being ‘qualified’ because she didn’t go to a prestigious university or study overseas. Or not having the ‘right connections’ to get hired.

But Ae-ra’s passion wasn’t being a TV announcer, her passion was speaking in front of a crowd. We saw her joy and excitement when she was the host speaker at her friend’s wedding. When she spoke at a local country festival. Ultimately Ae-ra reckoning with prestige and what she truly wanted. In the end she chose the the latter, she became a MMA announcer speaking in front of a large crowd, finally holding the treasured microphone between her hands! Her lifelong dream coming true!

TALE OF THE NINE TAILED:

Yeon’s red umbrella sword
(small rant but I hated his romance with Ji-A, they had no chemistry and Yeon should’ve been asexual imo)

Yeon’s love of mint ice-cream (I personally loathe mint ice-cream, it’s basically like eating toothpaste)

I know I’m stretching it, but Rang’s pet dog being reincarnated into a human child was all sorts of adorable

TALE OF THE NINE TAILED 1938:

Rang in a three piece suit, yes yes it’s definitely relevant to the plot!

Rang’s axes

Rang himself

And to the boring stuff:
The ruler that brings the dead back to life
The crystal that maintains the boundary between the living and the dead

Rang is indeed a treasure, but an object related to Rang is Yeo-hee's mermaid scale that saved his life. I never watched the first season but will always be grateful that Ji-ah was not in Season 2.

Yep I vastly preferred their romance compared to Yeon and Ji-ah’s. I also liked how Rang and Yeo-hee’s romance wasn’t central to the plot unlike in S1 which was forced and overtook the more compelling aspects of the show.

Some light spoilers here, sorry.

In Delivery Man, FL (ghost) has a hair tie on her wrist that belonged to ML's mom, which is how he establishes a connection between them at the beginning. I wanna say this is episode 2?

In Goblin, FL is given a necklace by ML which he sees in a vision of the future (and therefore knows he's supposed to give it to her). Later she forgets the significance of it, but it's one of the things that guides her back to the truth.

Crash Course In Romance had an orange pen that belonged to a student who killed herself back in the day, and that ML gives to her younger brother at her funeral. Later used to ID him as the serial killer *sigh*.

It's Okay to not be Okay has a butterfly brooch that is worn by the person who killed the brothers' mom and is the reason Sang-tae is so terrified of butterflies.

Never Give Up has a cell phone that once belonged to the younger ML's mom that a loan shark with a heart of gold has in her stash and is trying to return to him. Older ML is able to ID him from pictures on it.

Ok, I'm stopping. This was a fun one to think about and I'm sure there are loads more!

This one is a form of allusion to childhood connection. It was well done in You Are My Spring.

By this time, romance has been cemented and the noble idiocy a la compulsory breakup has come and gone. The ML handed the FL one of the many candies he's handed her. In this particular scene, the FL in turn plants the candy in the ground and surrounds it with stones which she shaped circular or heart, I can't recall at the moment. The ML sees this act and immediately recalls his first love from the orphanage. So far the FL has been jealous of the woman who happens to be the ML's first love, and the ML himself doesn't do anything to soothe her jealousy, he rubs it in more instead, lovingly of course. Turns out she has been jealous of herself and he has given his heart to first love all over again.

Significant Object : A Candy, planted in the ground and surrounded by stones.

Most recent : Hae-joon's wristwatch in My Perfect Stranger.

Glass Mask : The female lead has a signature tailoring method called cross-stitching or double stitching. Her sister, who is wicked by the way, knew she was back immediately she saw the design.

At some point (I wonder what year) cell phones started to play a prominent role. Unlock the Boss, obviously. I think in Partner, Lee Dong Wook tosses away the cherished no-longer-functioning phone of Kim Hyun-Joo that was a reminder of her deceased husband (although I feel I've seen that more than once). And I hazily remember in Smile, You, Lee Min-jung giddily receives (or gives?) a cell phone from Jung Kyung-ho just as she's getting interested in him.

One of the best (in my opinion) uses of the cellphone as a plot device is in Kairos. The two develop brilliant teamwork to avert both present and future disasters, despite being able to communicate only one minute each day.

The green and red circus-print handkerchief in 19th Life. Young Ji-eum uses it to bandage teenage Seo-ha’s hand at the playground and he keeps it and shows it to her in the present (both in her current 19th life). It’s from the Dongbaek Circus with which Ji-eum performed in her 17th life when she was a man, Ae-gyeong’s uncle, and young Ae-gyeong carried a stack of them away after her uncle died. She must have held on to one and given it to young Ji-eum. So that object has persisted through 3 lifetimes and connects characters in both past and present lives.

In Signal, Soo-Hyun recognizes Jae-Han’s walkie-talkie by the smiley-face sticker she’d stuck to the bottom years ago, when she was a rookie officer.

In Cinderella and the Four Knights, a pair of matching rings seem to suggest an inadvertent incestuous relationship between the lead couple. But being a kdrama romcom, there is a different explanation absolving the couple of any hint of sin—an explanation involving a forbidden marriage, a fatal fire, and a bunch of unbelievable coincidences.

Here’s another book…the one in Once Upon a Small Town that (child) Han Ji-yool gave to (child) Ja-young when he left town to go on to bigger and better things in the big city. He’d signed it, “I’m Han Ji-Yool. I’ll be back. Let’s be secret friends again!”

Even though he forgets that he did this, and he forgets her…eventually, he does this very thing 🥰

Another cute thing about this, though, is that there’s a plot arc in which our OTP gives conflicting love advice to two young ‘uns about what to do when one of them forgets about a gift the other one gave (which is what had happened to this original book, of course :)). Adorable hilarity ensues.
