Does anyone ever taste durian? As I live in Southeast Asia, it s aplenty here. Mostly, you will either love it or hate it with passion; there's nothing in between. My mom would even faint when she smells the stench of durian fruit nearby (I'm one of that rare person who's just so-so with it)

So my random conclusion with this drama's weird title is, probably writer Im want to remind us that we will really-really love this drama or hate it, there's nothing in between .... haha

Du Ri-an is the name of the main character. It's probably a double meaning: the name and the fruit with a strange smell, which is considered an aphrodisiac.

I saw the 1st episode and although I don't know if the director is the same as in the previous drama of this screenwriter, but I suspect so. The scenes are cut just like the previous drama. Some have milliseconds and you don't know why they are at that moment and not another. The drama is strange, chaotic, there is a constant snapping of scenes from the present to events from 100 years ago. In addition, there is magic (a boulder in the garden), supernatural phenomena. The scene with the daughter-in-law confessing her love to her mother-in-law in the presence of family members was... I don't even know how to describe it. Typical soap opera. The drama is so weird that I'm going to watch it for as long as my curiosity can take it. In the case of the screenwriter's previous drama, my curiosity was killed by the appearance of a ghost in the plot in season 2. I stopped watching then.

If you ask me, I'm watching three dramas in one here : how the past plays out, how the future plays out, and how the past affects the future moving forward. The part I'm enjoying the most is the 3rd.

The past here is a bit tragic. Not the love triangle but the fact that it was made tragic in the end : Du Ri-an lost both her husband and her flame. I don't think I'm in the mood to watch the scenes after that.

Is there any resemblance between Eon and Chi-gam's son? And who is Chi-gam in the Joseon timeline?

After Love ft Marriage and Divorce 1,2&3, I can't believe I'm sitting in on screenwriter Phoebe's next project, except they've casted actors I can resist.

Really enjoying this. Glad that I started watching, though the initial description didn't appeal to me. I'm not usually a fan of fantasy/time travel dramas, but I'm able to suspend disbelief and get into this because the contrast between the Joseon folks and the modern folks is being handled so well--especially the speech/manners. I'm not at all stickler for manners/etiquette/formality, but I can't help but appreciate the respectful--and perhaps a beautifully feminine--way of speaking by the Joseon ladies compared to the way the spoiled rich moderns talk. Obviously change is inevitable and many changes are good (e.g. the shower and indoor plumbing), but I also think there's always something lost in the forceful march of progress.

I can't make sense of the events in the past yet. Du Ri An was married to a bad husband and had a small baby, then her dad's servant dies (and we understand there was something between them), then she ran after the other girl, then we find the other girl is her daughter in law, so she has an adult son...
So maybe she had a son with the servant, and then she got married to the bad guy? And the mother in law killed the servant?
But she was living quite a peaceful life with her son and daughter in law, and she could say freely the name of the father... so how many lives has she lived in the past? one or two?
If someone had understood what's going on, please let me know!
The pace is too slow for me, yet I keep watching it to see if I can make head or tail from this story.
What I like most is the "fish out of water" part.

What you described in the first paragraph was what already happened but that was what we were shown first.
What you have in the second paragraph are the things/events that happened/led to the first paragraph but we're told later.

For example. I had thought Eon was dead. And yes, while he was already dead cause I later got to figure that the other lady is Du Ri-an's DIL, your second paragraph showed us the moments before his death.

Yes it's a bit confusing and I'm surprised why the writer chose this method of unfolding both worlds - the present from the beginning and the future from the end, but once you get into it, you'll see why it makes sense. For one, it informs us how taken aback Du Ri-an will be at Baek Do-yi's treatment of Chi-gang - which also happens to be my only focus in Durian's Affair at the moment.

Kindly keep watching Annie.

Just caught up with the first 2 episodes but the storytelling approach for Joseon period is a bit confusing. I thought Du Ri-an had two sons then I got there were two timelines in the past. Eom is probably Dol Sae's son but what about in the modern day timeline?

Maybe you need to add this to your list for next week’s post ‘screenwriters you don’t love list’. This sounds like we need a new category for weird endings they can be known as a ‘Fan letter please: planet randomly blown up ending’🥺

This story was absolutely all over the place. How many writers had a hand in this mess? And the end? Too many unanswered questions, too many storylines. Very disappointed in this, wasted 16 episodes to cpme up totally confused
