News bites: May 30, 2023

  • It’s posters galore this week with MBC taking a serious approach, featuring our three leads facing off in the office drama Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle. Clashing over ethics versus survival of the fittest in a world of finance, L (Secret Royal Investigator), Choi Jin-hyuk (Zombie Detective), and Choi Min-soo (Extracurricular) will be presenting their reports come June 23. [MBC]

  • SBS’s upcoming Revenant released stills from the first script reading, showcasing leads Kim Tae-ri (Twenty Five Twenty One), Oh Jung-se (Uncle), and Hong Kyung (Weak Hero Class 1). Actor Jin Seon-gyu (Behind Every Star) was also present and will be appearing in the series in a special guest role. The occult mystery premieres on June 23 as well. [SBS]
  • The gothic camp continues in the latest poster for KBS’s Heartbeat, with our undead hero Taecyeon (Blind) bemoaning that his coffin was opened too early. Now that his plans to become mortal have been foiled again, we can expect plenty of shenanigans on June 26 when the half-vampire moves in with our human heroine Won Ji-ahn (If You Wish Upon Me). [KBS]

  • Over on tvN, the new poster for See You in My 19th Life promises a miraculous reunion with the drama’s happy foursome. Starring Shin Hye-sun (Mr. Queen), Ahn Bo-hyun (Yumi’s Cells 2), Ha Yoon-kyung (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Ahn Dong-goo (The Law Cafe), the fantasy romance launches in just a few weeks on June 17. [News1]
  • Also premiering on June 17 is JTBC’s King the Land and the new posters once again put the spotlight on the rom-com’s main pair. The tagline introduces their characters with Junho (King the Land) as the man who scorns smiles and Yoon-ah (Big Mouth) as his opposite, the woman who has to smile. [News1]

  • Im Se-mi (Duty After School) is the latest to receive an offer for the crime-thriller Wonderful World (working title). All the while, Kim Nam-joo (Misty) has confirmed casting for the lead role as psychology professor and writer Eun Soo-hyun. The series is still in the planning stages and is aiming to broadcast in 2024. [Xports News (1), (2)]
  • The first posters have dropped for the healing drama I’ll Take the Trip for You (a.k.a. I Will Travel for You), with pretty illustrations of an idyllic countryside. Starring Gong Seung-yeon (The First Responders), Yoo Joon-sang (Alchemy of Souls), and Kim Jae-young (Love in Contract), the novel adaptation will have scripts by Jung Hwe-hyun (Radiant Office) with PD Kang Sol (Delivery Man, Show Window: The Queen’s House) at the helm. Ahhh, those lovely posters. That cute dog is a shape-shifting serial killer, the truck of doom is just outside the frame and there are a few thugs in that balloon waiting to touch down. It will be a healing drama for sure.

Seems like a really good round of dramas coming up! There's a surprising number that I'm excited to tune in for.

“Numbers” just got more interesting with Choi Min-soo in it. He should only be allowed to speak in Busan dialect. 😆

Completely nerdy comment alert: why are KMS and CJH left to right when we're facing them, but also left to right when we're facing CMS? Maybe it's deliberate (and arty!) but I'm just wanting to have a go at the continuity person... Wow, I should get out more...

His character in Zombie Detective needs to live on forever. How I hated seeing that drama come to an end! Zombie Accountant, that's a great one!

The availability angst has been very intense lately. Trying to temper my excitement in case nothing is streaming internationally. Looks like King the Land and See You in My 19th Life are already slated for Netflix though, so at least we'll have them.

1. “ethics… in a world of finance” is an oxymoron.

2. Jin Seon-kyu? As if I already wasn’t excited enough…

3. These promos continue to be everything to me. I keep appreciating them Again & Again.

4. Am I the only one who finds Ha Yoon-kyung nearly unrecognizable here???

5. Oh my god, they’re never beating the ‘used entire budget to pay salaries’ allegations from me. What is THAT??!?

6. Honestly, I’ll watch anything with Kim Nam-joo post-Misty so I’m all in.

7. As long as Kim Jae-young gets to keep his beautiful mane of glory, I will be watching.

1. Choi Jin-hyuk. Choi Jin-hyuk in a suit. Choi Jin-hyuk with his hair styled up. Was this drama about anything else?

3. I'm already Tired of Waiting for this. I don't care whether it's OK or Not.

4. No, and I also keep staring at Shin Hye-sun, trying to recognize her. No matter which poster/promo I see for this, I can't see any resemblance to her in other dramas. I don't think it's just the hair but I can't put my finger on it. Anyway, I'm willing to give it a shot.

5. Ugh, RIGHT? What little was left from the salaries must have gone to sports car rental.

7. I haven't seen any production photos yet but we can hope, can't we? His mane of glory's cameo in Love in Contract was one of the few bright spots in that dreary slog. The poster gives faint Forbidden Marriage feels.

1. Nope. And that's how I like it!

3. I think its been well-established that Heartbeat *is* the best drama of 2023. I will accept no other answers.

4. I can still see Shin Hye-sun even with the reddish hair and bangs, but Ha Yoon-kyung might as well be a different person. I don't know what's doing on, but I hope its better in the final product.

5. Sports cars and gratuitous hotel lobby shots. Nothing else.

7. You're right about the Forbidden Marriage comparison, it is remarkably similar. Drama gods willing, this drama is better than the utter mess that one turned out to be.

No. 1. NUMBERS. GOOD NEWS for US VIEWERS!! MBC’s NUMBERS the Choi Jin-hyuk and Choi Min-soo reunion (both in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) (5 stars) that I have been waiting for is now on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list which means there is a decent chance it will become available on Viki US. Keeping my fingers crossed. One down.

Next up I want to see on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list is KBS’s HEARTBEAT. KBS do the right thing.

O/T. FYI @kiara, MBC’s JUMONG (2006) (81 eps.) is now on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list. JUMONG’s average rating was 40.98%.
Any JUMONG thoughts you can share?

I have no idea. Are you sure you watched it on Viki and not maybe DramaFever?

Interesting that it is my experience over the last couple of years that it is first available on Kocowa and then Viki when an old big three network sageuk comes back in circulation.
However in this case JUMONG (as of today) does not come up in a search on Kocowa.

DramaFever did not exist when JUMONG came out. Most older sageuks they licensed later were already subbed by WITHS2 or Viki.
Back then, the subs took a few days or a week, but it felt like live watching.😃 It wasn't until QSD that the subs were done daily. Fun times!

I may have watched JUMONG on the Korean channel with MBC's subs. I considered buying the DVD for $200+ but bought DAE JANG GEUM instead.
