Teacher Kim is rising competition 🤭
Bo-ra! Deborah really ended on a low note.
Of course Dr. Cha maintains high numbers with TOTNT1938 keeping a close leash it's audience. I really like that though - maintaining your audience as 9T1938 and My Perfect Stranger does. And 6-7% is really commendable.

So happy that the outstanding acting from the main cast in The good bad mother is being reflected in the viewing figures now we are on the home stretch. I hope they keep climbing. This is amazing to see with so many unlikeable characters still present in the storyline.

No one would have predicted that DR Cha's numbers would be lower this week compared to last week.
Did MBC decided to bow out for the whole week? Kind of sad to see.

I think the time overlap on Saturday are tearing the audience between the two Drs. Dr Kim had an extremely intense episode last Friday and that likely kept some Cha viewers on Saturday - who could still watch Cha repeat before the Sunday episode.

It's sad how the 3 main channels kinda give up. KBS has 2 dramas, SBS 1 and MBC 0.

Really sad. So many of my favorite shows through the years have been on KBS or MBC.

Same here. They were my go to channels for epic sageuks. Here is hoping for reruns.

Then (as a US viewer) the big 3 keep us on pins and needles as to which streams their dramas are going to be licensed. It is not a given now that their dramas will be available on Kocowa (which they jointly own) and thus on Viki US.
I am still waiting to see if MBC’s NUMBERS and KBS’s HEARTBEAT will be available on a legal stream in the US.
(Apologies for the Monday morning rant!)

No worries! I'm ranting with you. If I can't find both of these somewhere to watch, not sure what I'll do. Why oh why is it so hard to watch them. Give me the good ol' days.

I rant also! Delightfully Deceitful streaming tonight, but can't find it streaming to US (someone correct me if it is). So many dramas not available, and I subscribe to most streaming. 335,000,000 ppl in the US, you'd think they'd want the audience!

I think KBS could be happy as I saw on twitter My perfect stranger was most watched drama on streaming last week on a list that combined all Korean streamings platform. (https://twitter.com/ottranking/status/1661915076318875649)
KBS have sageuk Goryeo Khitan war in pipeline for this winter in celebrating KBS 50th founding anniversary. They had script reading a few days ago. They opening Wen-thur time slot again this winter.
SBS also opening Mon-thus in October!

In my opinion, SBS is still thriving. They are producing one hit after another, like Taxi Driver S2, Dr Romantic S3 (that number is still good). Upcoming they will have The Revenant and 7 Escapes which are their flagship projects ("pinned" on their Instagram account)

KBS and MBC need a epic saeguk to make a comeback.

KBS has a proper sageuk in production. The 32 episode THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR. Reports are that filming began on May 17 and it will air in November.

I count at least 3 MBC fusiony sageuks in the works:
1. LOVERS (Namgoong Min)
2. FLOWERS THAT BLOOM AT NIGHT (Lee Ha-nee)
3. THE STORY OF PARK's MARRIAGE CONTRACT (Lee se-young).

Hopefully they won't sell it to Disney+ and cut out the US viewers.

Exactly.

MBC has not been lucky with fusion saeguks this year. The Red Sleeve or stories that are inspired by Joseon histories/other dynasties in Korea are usually big hits.

After recently experiencing OBY and JA I am passing on the whole lot of the possible fusiony sageuks coming down the line this year and waiting for THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR.

My take is this:
The notable new factor is that KDramas are abandoning their cultural roots. They used to be notable for being aspirational, warm and dignified. Now they're becoming focused on murder, crime, adultery and (increasingly) sex.

Things began to change when Hollywood money began to flow in. (He who pays the piper calls the tune.). Hollywood loves debauchery and preaching its soulless values.

Look at the ratings. Generally: The shows which have the ‘heart’ and nobility (that are traditionally found in K dramas) are doing well. The cold, soulless Hollywood-style ones aren't.

Episode 19 had 19%, episode 20 had 20%... Will episode 50 have 50%?? 😄😄

I am actually disappointed at the numbers for THE REAL HAS COME! It is so much better dramatically than what we saw with YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN yet the later show did better with the audience. Apparently a writer can be too topical.

But on the other hand, DR. CHA is doing well simply because it is a superior show.

Yes, The Real Has Come is really getting into form now. Just wonder if it’s becoming a norm that the weekender viewer is shrinking with no rebound.

I wondered that too- but YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN only finished a little over a year ago with only one other weekender in between. It may be that some other shows are simply taking audience away.

But I do think that to some extent this show may be making its viewers too uncomfortable. Because many of the prejudices and problems being shown are common to the average Korean. Such as the prejudice against single parenthood which when combined with the traditional Neo Confucian prejudice against adoption means that a girl who gets pregnant may realistically have only abortion as an option. While it should certainly be a choice it should not be the only choice.

Combine this with the burdens that Korean society places on marriage plus the economic uncertainty facing young people who have difficulty finding a job and it is little wonder that Korea's birthrate has fallen catastrophically (one wit put it this way: "Korea is abolishing itself").

This show is not a "Let's have more babies" show, rather it is a realistic response to such a sentiment. It could actually have been titled LET'S GET REAL, PEOPLE.

As good as this show has been written when compared to several weekenders before it, I actually think that it may be suffering from being too topical and timely. The message has to make people uncomfortable. I would also note that at least some of the problems it shows apply to developed countries beyond Korea and have had the same effects. Italy is a good example of this, for instance.

I think you’re right that the drama’s set up does touch on some very sensitive - or still untouchable - issues like falling pregnant with man A only to find love in Man B. If sperm donation is to take place later on, things will get trickier with the conventional weekender watchers.

BTW, is the younger step-sister of ML pregnant? I recall she had positive test.

So excited that "Kim 3" just showed up on Hulu! Only the first two episodes are there so far, so I won't be able to live watch, but I've been struggling to get through the episodes on poor streaming platforms and welcome the chance to see it without all that trouble.
