You can only pick one: Enemies-to-lovers drama

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one enemies-to-lovers drama

missvictrix: Without a doubt I’m picking Hyena — and not just because Joo Ji-hoon is my #1 oppa. Despite being a legal drama with some of those requisite cliché elements, Hyena was largely cheeky, interesting, well-paced, and knew what it did best: play with the sparring between our leading lawyers, Joo Ji-hoon and Kim Hye-soo. While Kim Hye-soo plays this tacky do-anything-to-win attorney, Joo Ji-hoon is the suave high-end attorney that fell in love with a women she was pretending to be. Their evolving interactions/relationship throughout the drama is pure gold, and between the bruised heart of our hero, and the kkangpae-mode of our heroine, this drama was a blast.

mistyisles: I deliberated between several K-dramas/couples for this one, but in the end I decided to go with one where the romance wasn’t necessarily the main focus of the show itself, and yet it still gave me one of my favorite K-drama couples of all time: God’s Quiz. Dr. Han Jin-woo and Detective Kang Kyung-hee may not have been outright enemies, per se, but they definitely weren’t excited about having to work together at first. Instead, they started out as two very guarded individuals who didn’t want to open up to anyone — least of all each other — and slowly learned to lower their defenses just enough to let each other in and forge a super strong bond of teamwork that ultimately turned into love. And then, once they became an actual couple, their relationship managed to survive every bit of crazy that God’s Quiz decided to throw at it. Like an evil alternate personality. And an entire season with Kyung-hee absent. Despite all of its flaws (and there are many), I loved all five seasons of God’s Quiz — and I’d happily watch ten more seasons of these two working as a team to solve weird cases together.

DaebakGrits: Even though this is one of my favorite tropes, I actually had to stop and think about this prompt for a moment because most of the obvious choices have not aged well. But You From Another Star remains a classic, and the only unhealthy thing about this romance is the fact that kissing knocks our alien hero on his butt — but even that gets resolved with… practice. (*eyebrow wiggles*) Overall, this is a happy rom-com with a makjang murder side plot that helps prevent this 21-episode drama from getting too slow and boring in between all the enemies-to-lovers hijinks. And boy are there hijinks! Our OTP is definitely from two worlds — both literally and figuratively — and their miscommunication and polar opposite personalities make for comedic gold as they go from bickering neighbors to smooching allies.

solstices: Imagine a grumpy kitten glaring up at an oversized goofball, and you have Semantic Error. After the rigid and rule-abiding Sang-woo inadvertently causes his graduation to be delayed, carefree upperclassman Jae-young decides to make the most of his extra semester by wedging himself into Sang-woo’s life. Armed with cheeky smiles and obnoxious red outfits, Jae-young is determined to get on Sang-woo’s last nerve. The best part is that Jae-young eventually goes from intentionally pushing Sang-woo’s buttons and being as contrary as he can, to respecting Sang-woo’s boundaries and giving him a wide berth to back away if he feels uncomfortable. (Except Sang-woo takes the initiative instead — squee!) Their progression from petty bickering, to grudging respect, to flustered attraction, and finally to playful lovebirds is so simple and natural — and so heart-fluttering! The show’s bite-sized length made it a breezy watch, and I loved its attention to detail (the neon signs were on point). It’s a feel-good little gem of a show, brought to life by a thoughtful director and an endearing cast.

Unit: There’s nothing that says enemies-to-lovers better than the “I don’t feel anything for you… you’re not a woman to me,” to the “I will love only you until the day I die,” dialogue delivered by the prince of a fictional South Korean monarchy to his North Korean love interest (a fierce and badass soldier!) in King 2 Hearts. A love story between the high profile duo of a divided nation? It’s simply the best enemies-to-lovers tale there ever was!

Dramaddictally: I’m going with Our Beloved Summer. This is one of my overall favorites, but in the enemies-to-lovers category, I can’t think of a better one. I love Choi Woo-shik and Kim Da-mi, and the characters they play in this drama just grabbed hold of my heart. They start out in high school, disliking each other for being opposites in personality and in class rank (she thinks he’s an idiot, he thinks she has a bad temper) — and then end up totally in love. But then, they break up and harbor ill will toward each other for five years, only to get back together again! Our lovely male lead, Woong, goes from spraying water at Yeon-su’s face to kissing her under raindrops. Now that’s a story. Enemies to lovers twice!

alathe: Hwayugi (a.k.a. A Korean Odyssey): To get my attention in a crowded square, you don’t have to call my name. All you have to do is yell, “Can anyone recommend some decent enemies-to-lovers media?” and I’ll be immediately identifiable via the high-pitched squealing noises emanating from my general direction. This, for me, is the trope to end all tropes. Still, my pick ended up being a little less straightforward — Hwayugi is hard to categorize, because it gives a couple of twists to that classic rivals-turned-lovers formula. To wit: what if the man who once swore to protect you turns out to be a mythological monster bent on devouring you whole? And what if, in an attempt to save your life, you accidentally cursed him into falling in love with you instead? No one does allies-turned-enemies-turned-lovers-fated-to-be-each-other’s-undoing quite like the Hong sisters. What I love most is that this drama is gorgeously slow-burn and fast-burn all at once. True, our deliciously amoral hero is cursed to love our heroine several episodes in — but he resents it with every fiber of his being! Meanwhile, it’s a long, long road until real feelings develop, hitting all the right enemies-to-lovers notes for me: if there’s one thing I adore, it’s being able to wallow in the journey. What could be more satisfying than watching two people gradually fall into each other, fighting it all the while? This drama will rip out your heart, dunk it in Sohn Oh-gon’s grisly Sam-jang seasoning, then lovingly patch it back in place — and oh, how it aches at the end of it all!

Great picks here!! hyena definitely was a great enemies to lovers plot.

I drew a blank and had to think a bit. I think I will go with an oldie Goong, Princess hours .
There was something about this drama that pulled me in, not to mention it was my gateway to JJH! I loved their chemistry, be is fighting petty teenagers or a bunch of lonely kids in a palace. Their little progress from enemies to hesitant friends to lovers was really done well.
Not sure how well this show has aged. I am just picking this from my memory.

I love the enemies to more trope! I watched 4 of the dramas listed above (I've only seen clips of semantic error).

And funny enough I was just thinking about one of the things I like most is when the character falls despite themselves. Like in The King 2 Hearts, Jae Ha took an interest in Hang Ah damn near from the moment she laid him out and there's all these moments of him watching her but of course he was in such denial over it, it doesn't even register to him. Even when he was mean to her and said she wasn't a woman, he was so thrown by her reaction and tried his damnedest to get her attention, even getting annoyed that he was getting the silent treatment in return. There really are so many times when he's just watching her or he's thinking about her and I enjoyed seeing those moments. On her end, I loved how she went from "of all the men in world, he's who you choose?! Bring me Brad Pitt or Obama" haha. Them still saying as long as they don't marry each other as they share their first kiss is priceless. I'm so glad this was apart of someone's list.

I watched Hyena but I don't remember everything about it; I particularly remember the end and I really liked their bickering chemistry. I think they were trying to promote their business but they were using rival streamers and one crashed the other's live stream. That's their dynamic in a nutshell: they have the same goal but the approach is different until they crash into each other and leave everyone thinking what just happened?! Haha

Another Seung Gi project: Shining Legacy (Brilliant Inheritence). His character and the lead instantly clash (because of his actions) and yet he's still the first to fall but he keeps denying it to himself and others even though everyone can see it. The things I like most is when he smiles little smiles when her back is turned or he's caught staring by other. And then there's the moments of jealousy when he begrudgingly shows interest in her dating life but again refuses to believe it's because he's actually interested but rather another reason not to like or trust her. The female lead summed up their dynamic as they both were either mad or guilty toward the other at any given time and yet, she still ends up falling for him because of the changes and growth he goes through.

Does it hold up? It's on my Viki watchlist but I keep not starting it. It's only 11 years old, but the stills I've seen look kind of dated - maybe it's the gold-braid-festooned uniforms.

I am watching Heartless City which is probably 10 years old but it doesn’t feel dated at all. I mean, except for the camera and fashion etc. But olden kdramas had a timeless quality to them. King 2 hearts is probably the same. From the scenes I remember I think it should work even today!!

7

I think it does; I mean aside from topical stuff like Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie and specific era related things (the clothes, camera work, etc) I don't know why it wouldn't hold up.

It involves conflict/mistrust between North & South Korea
Family dynamics
Culture clashes
The way public figures are treated is the same as now

I always feel so nervous talking about something I like because what if someone hates it.

5

I watched it for the first time about two years ago, and didn't find it dated at all.

3

I think it does. I watched it recently and skipped the crazy theatrical villain for the most part. I enjoyed it on this rewatch more than the original watch, actually.

4

Oh god, I forgot the theatrical baddy! He was severely entertaining. A caricature of all villains.

3

It’s one of my go-to dramas for rewatches — scenes if not the whole thing. Yes, the central villain is waaay over-the-top, but the relationships of all the other characters are great and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The main couple is one of my all-time faves.

3

I want to pick “Princess Man” but it was more like, lovers - to - enemies - to - lovers.
While on the Moonie train, I might as well go with “Nice Guy.”

What? You can't tell me nothing happened between those guys after the credits rolled. We just didn't stick around long enough to see it.

Hyena is the one that comes to mind without thinking.

Love to Hate You is the latest on this end though.

Clean With Passion For Now.
1% of Something.
Her Private Life.
Full House.
Will You Have Dinner With Me?

Mr. Queen rocked this trope well.

I didn't watch this one but judging from the recaps alone which I enjoyed by the way, Mad For Each Other is another good one.

Completely agree with the Hyena and My Love from the Star picks.

Kim Hye-soo was great in Hyena and Jun Ji-hyun rocked that role so hard, she deserved every single award she won for it.

Mr Queen is a great pick too, our "no touch" couple is iconic

Someone is going to mention Secret again soon! 😁

I seem to love this trope because a lot of my favorite shows have been named already.

I will choose WILD ROMANCE. Going from a top-star baseball player and a die-hard fan of his rival team, to lovers, sure is the height of enemies-to-lovers.

I like Hwayugi (A Korean Odesessy) too but more than their enemies to lovers dynamic, I find his reaction to it funny. The scenes when he's so annoyed and frustrated by the constant disregard from her or the mockery from Ma Wang amuse me haha

The scene when he cries over his sauces while Ma Wang is trying to follow his mood swings is chuckleworthy.

Do Ma Wang & Son O Gong also count though they are kinda frienemies?
There could be a level of platonic love haha

"King2Hearts" is absolutely my favorite. I still think about that sequence where LSG's character goes to N. Korea to bring back the FL but she ends up first rebuffing, then saving him from enemies who attack at a carousel. His look of utter disbelief at her coolness and total adoration when he fully realizes for the first time that *he's* the lucky one is so satisfying to watch.

I'd also vote for "Kiss Sixth Sense" (the first 10 episodes--don't bother with the last two). I agree with alathe that "Hwagi's" set-up on this front was perfect, but I wish I could go back in time and encourage the casting director to pick someone else to play the FL. She had zero chemistry with LSG and was low energy overall which really tanked the love story for me.

I liked how he looked awed by her too. Especially when defeated the villians and just walks off, no looking back, with smoke around her. Because he had seen such a different side to her when they were together, it's possible he forgot just how badass she was.

I don't know enough entertainers and I definitely don't know names so I can never fancast anything or imagine other people in roles.

I just wanted to add that although I thought "Hyena" was a great drama and both actors were amazing in it, I don't consider it a enemies-to-lovers story because the leads never really become lovers again after they've been enemies. The only time they're lovers is when the FL is deceiving the ML at the very beginning, and even though at the end she begrudgingly admits that she had genuine feelings for him then, they don't reunite. I think it's debatable whether or not the writers *should* have made this more explicit of a love story, but I think it's pretty clear that they're not lovers by the end. So to me this is more of a legal drama with some sexual tension thrown in here and there and not a true enemies-to-lovers tale.

4

Required fields are marked *

They've also slept together that one time midway, but the ending was not quite there indeed. Maybe we're supposed to think that they (esp FL) needed more time to start dating again? It always felt like show ended few episodes too early to me. Plus maybe covid robbed us of some kisses...

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's very true. But because the romance is not explicit, the sexual tension is that much greater (since the tension never really gets resolved). I always lose interest after the moment the enemies become lovers.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you on Hyena—they do have sex after she’s in the law office, but its because she needs it or wants it temporarily. Thereafter she’s friendly with him, they work together, and they are holding hands at the end laughing at their triumph, but its not clear necessarily that she is in love with him.

Along those same lines, and this only matters to me, I know—most of the ones people are listing are really “arrogant or petulantly childish men to lovers.” Kings2Hearts is a perfect example, where the North Korean FL, though ridiculously worried about whether she will be able to get married, is otherwise sympathetic, whereas the ML is so unlikeable that you wish the other male characters would punch him in the nose. Same with One Percent of Something, My Love from a Star. Only in Beloved Summer do you have two relatable characters move from dislike to love and then separation to love. But even here, the ML is portrayed as the most annoyingly passive, I would be interested to see an enemies to lovers drama where the misunderstanding is on both sides, rather than dependent on a really unlikeable ML, whose redemption is totally undeserved, based on his behavior in the early episodes.

Ugh, now I'm reconsidering watching K2H. I've already met that kdrama foundational course requirement several times over. And yes, the ratio of jerks : actual enemies is at least 50 : 1 in romantic dramas. It’s much easier to find enemies-to-bromance stories, including some that are queer-coded as all hell. I think there needs to be an element of rivalry and (at least seemingly) opposing goals, not just dislike, to qualify two people as enemies.

1
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

You are right about the enemies to bromance, including Beyond Evil. As far as heterosexual romances, I think the category should be "enmity" to romance since most of the time in these setups the male lead is hated by all. (including this particular viewer!) Given, as you say, that rivalry and opposing goals rather than just dislike creates enemies, there might be so few enemy to lover romances because they are much harder to write. Much easier to make the man a total jerk and then bring him along under the influence of love. Also, I've noticed its very easy for many male actors to play an arrogant character who treats a FL with contempt than it is to play a decent guy who treats the female lead as an equal even while he is hates her or what she stands for, which is the kind of enemy model you are talking about.

@hacja there was childish whining in the law cafe?

0

@britney
The first two episodes, which is all I watched, he plays a character who, because of trauma, is living the life of a lazy avoiding work and responsibility landlord who when he encounters his former love acts extraordinarily immaturely. I know, as with the personal growth in Kings2Hearts, in the end he reassumes a role as a competent and skilled lawyer, thanks to his love of a beautiful intelligent woman.

Let me stress I really have nothing against these types of plots, I just experience intense irritation at the early phase of the male character, and then when the ML reveals his true colors, I start liking the show much better. Unfortunately, as with Law Cafe, I often just can't get by those early episodes!

BUT beyond my purely personal response, I don't think they are true enemies to lovers stories. They are instead unlikeable/petulant/arrogant/uptight men made better people by love stories, which again, I like fine but I think is a slightly different romance genre!

2

Although I see what hacja is saying, I personally did not wish to punch the ML in "King2Hearts." To me, he's more hapless than harmful (or more clueless than arrogant). Mostly, he just needs to be humbled by love and loss and that's exactly what happens. At any rate, the FL is more mature than him, but he's still likeable throughout, imo. The only thing I didn't like about this drama relates to the cartoonish villains, but that's easily outweighed by the other, better stuff in it.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I guess it was the scene that included the already cited line "you aren't a woman to me" that just twisted the knife in the FL, knowing her insecurities. That seems pretty harmful and just intentionally cruel--not sure I personally would have been able to take that. But, of course, there are also my personal biases at play--I've never been able to take continuous childish whining in adults. Lee Sueng Gi is very good at playing that kind of character. When I tuned into Law Cafe and saw he was assuming that role, I dropped it like a hot potato, even though I really liked the female lead.

1

He is AWFUL at the start but I didn’t hate it in the way I sometimes do, possibly because other people in the story were aware that he was behaving badly and it wasn’t just ok that he was like that.

I would say one of the best parts of the drama is seeing how LSG takes his character from immature boy to confident leader, but, yes, the journey is rough. And he is not nice to her until he almost looses her. After that, though, they are a team not to be messed with.

Mr Queen came THIS close to being the golden standard of the trope, but then its ending ruined everything. Actually I'm not the biggest fan of this trope in kdramas because I feel like most of them focus too much on bickering while forgetting about organic progression of OTP's feelings. Like you're watching the couple fighting for the 100500th time and can't help but think "Are you two SURE you like each other?" - that's what happens to me WAY too often, sadly. So nope, I can't name anything right now. Maybe I should just ditch k-part and go with LBFAD... They truly nailed it.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the prompt was King 2 Hearts and yeah, I’m sticking with that. Even if the villain was hilariously cartoonish (my sister and I spent half the time calling him the Evil Australian only to discover the actor was in fact from NZ and we had failed to recognise our own accent), the drama is still really good. The chemistry of the main couple is 🔥 and the transition from actual enemies (Lee Seung Gi’s character is SO MEAN to her at the start) to grudging respect to love is really well done.

One of the things I miss about the longer recaps is they sometimes gave cultural insights into the dramas for example, in You're All Surrounded when Dae Gu & Soo Sun are arguing (before the fight over the phone), they call each other a pain in the ass. A more recent drama that fits the bill, is Sh**ting Stars. I watched it recently and it is adorable how ML is constantly teasing/tormenting FL just to get her attention. He doesn't even realize he's desperate for her attention because he likes her.

If I only can pick one, I choose Live Up to your name (Deserving of the name). But I don't know if it really counts because the only one who "hated" (or at least she couldn't stand) the other one was the FL. It was an interesting progress with lots of ups and downs, because there were moments when it was him who didn't want to be with her...

Honorable mentions: Secret Garden, Flower boy next Door, Hometown Cha, The Happy Loner, Hwayugi...

I realize that I have not watched many enemies-to-lovers dramas. And the ones I have watched are more like "from antipathy to love" than actual hate.

If we categorize Deserving of the Name as enemies-to-lovers, 95 percent of kdramas become enemies-to-lovers. I think there must be much more enmity at stake😁

Totally agree. Lots of dramas start with mutual or unilateral antipathy between the main leads, but "hate" or "enemies" is something different.

I was thinking that even Hwayugi is not pure "enemies to lovers" because the FL has a big crush on the ML since the beginning, when she meets him being adults.

Agree!

I was wondering if Secret Garden could count because while I don't remember much, I think there was some kind of clash in the beginning but no, I don't think it counts.

The female lead didn't even care about the male lead until he kept inserting himself into her life because he was interested in her (from what I remember; I haven't watched this in years). The male lead was, of course, a total jerk and in denial over his attraction but I don't think he ever viewed her as his enemy or someone he had negative feelings towards.

I was thinking about Secret Garden, too.

Secret Garden has two enemies to lovers couples: the ML's idol friend Oska tries to get back (and in the end does) with his first love, who hates him passionately.

I don't remember too well but were Oska and the ex really enemies or at odds with each other? I don't think Oska had any bad feelings towards her except maybe guilt for how things went down and her end, I think she was bitter or heartbroken for the same reason but did she treat him like an enemy?

I think everyone was clashing more haha
The male lead vs the action school director
The ex vs the talented musician
At times the male lead vs Oska (due to jealousy)

As I'm writing, I'm thinking about the body swap scenanigans haha

Greatest Love hands down! It started so petty and was truly satisfying.

I though that enemies to lovers would be more represented in my dramalist, but it only score 19%. The good thing about my file, in addition to having superfluous numbers to jolt around, is that I can cite an unmentioned title: Another miss Oh.
They do not start on good term, but when they kiss they ignite the film.

One of the best kisses I've ever seen... period, not just for a Kdrama

To @dramadictally YES YES YES, just that. Three times watched, and this show still gets me emotionally over-involved every time. 'My Beloved Summer' will keep me warm for years to come.

First thing that came to my mind is Another Miss Oh. Also, Suspicious Partner. I can’t remember much but I think these are enemies to lovers dramas.

I knew you'd come 😆

I did a group watch, and I was constantly being like, "Oh, episode 10, that's a good one. Oooh, I love episode 16! OH MY GOD GUYS, episode 21 is here!!" 😂😂😂

@frabbycrabsis @midnight I'm the same!
If I see a random scene, I'm like 90% sure I can say which episode it is (except if it involves the stepmother; that decreases my chances haha)

But I know episodes 13, 16, 18, 21 haha

Another vote for Hwayugi which I enjoyed so much. Also, there is more than one enemies-to-lovers if you take a broad definition of lovers.

Ma-wang and Son Oh-Gong have got an enemies to friends progression.
P.K. and Jade Dragon in Alice's body go through the same journey.
Even in their own way, Asanyeo and P.K. also experience a form of understanding and somehow attachment and a friends-to-enemies-to-somehow-friendly twist.
Ma-wang and his son also have a nice progression from cold towards each other to warm and sharing, even though it's a subtle one.

P.K. stole my heart in more than one way for his undying and loyal affection for a lot of characters... less his fashion sense, but there you go, one can't have it all.

Soompi channeling Dramabeans. 😆

Most of their titles were also listed here, but I would never have thought of Touch Your Heart as enemies-to-lovers; it's more like mutually-baffled-unwilling-partners-to-lovers.

After seeing the results on IG (God bless who did the pie chart) i saw Goong and spent way past my bedtime watching clips on YT. With age n wisdom (lol) i could spot the problems a mile away but heck i still loved Chae Kyung and Lee Shin to bits.
