Joo-won balances work and crime-fighting in new teaser

Being a vigilante can take a huge toll on your body. Just ask our civil-servant-by-day-art-thief-by-night and his battle with his lack of sleep. In the second teaser for tvN’s upcoming Stealer: The Treasure Keeper, we see Joo-won (Alice) struggle to balance his day job as Hwang Dae-myung with all his clandestine night outings as the moniker Skunk.

He might be a complete slacker at his cover job at the cultural heritage department, much to the annoyance to his determined coworker police officer Choi Min-woo — played by Lee Joo-woo (Why Her?) — but he’s fully committed to righting the wrongs of the art world. He’ll steal art acquired by sketchy means and send it to the Jang Tae-in — played by Jo Han-chul (Big Bet) — the head of the secret government art recovery team Karma. Intrigued by this mysterious ally, Tae-in seeks to figure out Skunk’s identity and possibly bring him in as a team member.

And of course, because no heist is complete without a behind the desk crew, the rest of the Karma team consists of Kim Jae-won (Our Blues) playing the team maknae Shin Chang-hoon, and Choi Hwa-jung (Jealousy Incarnate) as the elite hacker Lee Choon-ja.

The teaser opens on Dae-myung sleeping on the job, getting his ear talked off by Min-woo, and generally being unbothered by any responsibility. This is a marked contrast to the following shots of him breaking into buildings and beating up thugs while in the voiceover, we hear an incredulous Min-woo ask Tae-in, “Where did you get all of these art pieces?” “Skunk stole them and sent them to me.”

Skunk’s a thief that steals from thieves, the title cards tell us. And if the gun Tae-in points at him is any indication, Karma is very interested in knowing his identity. However, it looks like the secrecy won’t last long, since the teaser ends with Dae-myung leveling a cool look and admitting to someone, “It’s me. I’m Skunk.”

Written by Shin Kyung-il and directed by Choi Joon-bae (Mouse), Stealer: The Treasure Keeper will premiere on tvN on April 12.

I knew there was a lot of vicious school bullying and serial murdering in art, but I had no idea until reading the premise for this show that the museum world required the wrong-righting of a vigilante supported by an elite female hacker. Of course that's one of the main reasons I watch kdramas, to learn new things about high culture!

By the way, I have enormous respect for women's computing skills, but it does seem as if the most brilliant female tech geniuses are squandering their abilities supporting lone-wolf vigilantes. As an admirer, let me urge you all to get out in front start your own high profile social benefit computing corporations!

At least supporting lone-wolf vigilantes beats getting laid off by Meta or Twitter.

And if you go the start-up route, don't follow the start-up herd opening an account with Silicon Valley Bank.

museums are research experts but it really doesn´t take a hacker tho, just a regular archiver . I am a bit puzzled why they need secret government establishment when people in museums actually do find lost items and reveal all the secrets in history.

Lol, although there is truly a lot of shadiness in acquisition such as colonialism, Nazis, and modern heists that are often acts of cultural theft.

I want this more than anything, it is going to be terrible in only the best way. I see it's going to air in the month of my birth and I consider this to be Dramaland's birthday present.

I hope this So Bad It's Good drama doesn't disappoint by being a) good or b) so bad it's just bad a la Island.

I've been avoiding live watching for the past few months, but this preview really made me laugh. The name Skunk is just too weirdly funny. Kind of like The Tick. Besides, I really like art and art museums. The art world is a fine place for shady happenings! Hope it is on a platform I can watch.

Right? Have the writers ever *smelled* skunk? Maybe they were thinking of badgers. I am not confident of my ability to not think about actual skunks if I watch this.

@redfox: That would be something. If I was a security guard, I would quit on the spot because there’s no job in existence that pays enough to deal with skunk smells.

A cursory google search tells me there are no skunks in Korea, which makes a lot more sense as to why the writers thought this name was reasonable.
