[Drama catnip] Reunited lovers

By @zeinabsamir

When it comes to dramas about reunited lovers, I jump in headfirst without giving it a second thought. The idea that people who are fated to be will end up together, no matter what, is one of the few beliefs I hold dear to my heart.

Some dramas are about couples who met, fell in love, got together for a while, and then, unfortunately, broke up. The epitome of that genre is Our Beloved Summer, where the plot revolves around the relationship between Woong and Yeon-soo. Be it their high school days, their dating phase, the heart-rending breakup, or how they met again after all those years — never had there been a moment their hearts stopped beating for each other. But perhaps they needed that time apart to grow up more, both as individuals and as a couple, before their happily ever after.

Other dramas I love in the same genre are: Go Back Spouses, When My Love Blooms, Emergency Couple, and the currently airing drama Strangers Again.

Some dramas about reunited lovers feature love stories that transcend a lifetime. Can anyone get over the Ryeon and Jung-gil couple from Tomorrow? If it were up to me, I would have focused on their backstory more, and somehow brought them back together. Since the first time I spotted Jung-gil’s gaze at Ryeon, I knew it was one of a besotted man. Jung-gil was mad at Ryeon for leaving his side, but he never once hated her. And as for Ryeon, she wore that pink eyeshadow endlessly since it was a loving memory from the one with whom she wished she had stayed forever.

Aside from Tomorrow, I love the couples in Mystic Pop-up Bar and Showtime Begins, but my second favorite couple goes to Chicago Typewriter, although I liked the past timeline more than the present-day one.

The reunited lovers story which tugs at my heartstrings the most is where the couple meets as children, falls for each other, meets again without knowing who they are, and then falls in love for the second time. The couple from She Was Pretty is a great example of this. Hye-jin knew all along that Sung-joon was her first love, but it was Sung-joon who had no clue. Still, he fell in love with her again.

Other dramas that share the same context are 100 Days My Prince and The King’s Affection. Some people might view it as a simple childhood connection trope, but for me, it is a story about two couples who, despite having to part ways in the past, met again as adults and won’t let go this time.

Last but not least, if I could choose two catnips, I would undoubtedly go with friends-to lovers-set up. No matter how many love stories I watch unfold, the Iksong couple from Hospital Playlist will remain at the top of my favorites. Those two were friends for over twenty years, and crossing that line was no easy feat. The spark was always there, and working in the same hospital brought them closer. If anything, the maturity with which they handled their relationship might be the true charm of their love story. Ik-jun always gave Song-hwa her space and stayed around without being pushy, and Song-hwa mustered up the courage in the end to go to him.

@zeinabsamir thanks for sharing this lovely piece. The Hospital playlist one is the one for me because he stepped back for a friend and later married someone else so they really did go the long way round to end up together. 100 days my prince was great too I am so close to finishing it I just need to accept I am going to have to fast forward through the palace politics hanging in there right to the end. Go back spouses was on point too. I didn’t realise how much I love this trope too although I definitely prefer the rom com version to melodrama every time.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I hope to see some good quality dramas with this trope come out this year.

I am glad you liked it. Yeah, the Iksong couple went a long way before their ship finally sailed. For me, they are at the top of my favorite couples.

I also agree with you the rom-com version is more enjoyable. I hope your wish comes true and we get some quality reunited lovers stories this year.

I like this theme too. But sometimes, if the couple didn't get back together, I would have been happy too.

For example, in Our Beloved Summer, I think during the half the drama, I didn't want them to be together. In Stranger Again, clearly, I would prefer them separated because they didn't show any growth since the past.

In Tomorrow, their story was very tragic but I liked the fact they had to assume their decisions and their consequences. I think at the end, they were both in peace with their past.

In The King's Affection, it was the childhood connection trope. But the ML didn't fall in love with the FL because of that, he didn't know. But their meeting as a kid influced his whole life, he became a doctor for poor people after what she said. He learned the truth way after. But for the FL, he was special and he made her opening herself to others.

In She Would Never Know, they did pretty well the separation/reunion after 3 years. I really liked this drama because we could follow the feelings of the characters and the way they took their decision.

I am on board with not wanting the couple in Strangers again to get back together since nothing changed for them. But it was worth a try in our beloved summer, especially since both of them dealt with their feelings with honesty and had some much-needed character development.

What I love about the king's affection is that he still fell in love with her despite not knowing she was his first love. I think it is a distinct taste from the usual reunited lovers' stories.

I was the same as you in OBS, didn't want the couple ending up together for the first half. In fact I didn't like FL until that second half. And then I was totally sold. Yes, they indeed needed that time away to fix their relation.

The ML always was angry with the FL when he looked happy and relaxed with the second female lead. But they could work on their issues and they learned to be happy alone and together.

Is there hardly a Saguek that doesn't have a reunited lovers theme or plot.

I couldn't sit through Our Beloved Summer but I totally enjoyed 100 Days My Prince. Go Back Couple will always be my no 1 reunited lovers drama, ever.

Sageuk and reunited lovers come hand in hand but those two hit different to me.

Go back couple was really good. I loved it too. They started the drama wanting nothing to do with each other but realized slowly how much they care for each other.

“I like to see people reunited, I like to see people run to each other, I like the kissing and the crying, I like the impatience, the stories that the mouth can't tell fast enough, the ears that aren't big enough, the eyes that can't take in all of the change, I like the hugging, the bringing together, the end of missing someone.”
Reason why I love this catnip. You name the dramas, not promise to finish it but definitely try to watch the 1st few eps

Mystic Pop Up Bar!! The way Chief Hwi looked at Weol Ju every single time, broke my heart as she was totally clueless of who he really was. I was rooting for them from the moment I realised who he was (and it was in early episodes).

I have to bring here also the main couple of Lovestruck in the city. I never liked FL, I never wanted them together, mainly because she needed professional help because she was broken. I ranted about them in the weecaps like crazy, saying he must move on and leave her behind. Yet the drama managed to make me see why they could be together and how their relation could be a healthy one once they were honest to each other.

Oh yeah, I was the samefor Lovestruck in the City! I really didn't like how the FL lied and hurt him when she could tell him the truth, but she was a coward.

But at the end, I was happy with the couple because they could be honest with each other and act as themselves.

Chief Hwi's eyes were full of love. I loved how he was a softie around Weol-ju. While she was the one with a temper.

I hated the female lead in Lovestruck on the city too. The male lead was holding onto her till the very end and I too wanted to tell him he was too good for her. but somehow the drama managed to get me on board.

I love this trope. It’s a large part of why I love dramas and now find so many Western shows dry. They lack heart, in my opinion. But if it’s a childhood connection, I still want it to be done well and integrated into the storyline and not just tacked on as an afterthought.
Thank you for this lovely bit of catnip, @zeinabsamir! I’m now purring contentedly.

I generally am not a fan of the childhood connection, to much fate for my taste, and as Lonestar Girl noted, often it's tacked in as an afterthought, but thought it worked great in What's Wrong With Secretary Kim (and not so great in My Private Life, totally unnecessary in my opinion).

For some reason I do like stories of divorced or broken up couples that meet again later and have a second chance to resolve misunderstandings, such as Discovery of Love (also feels like closure for Que Sera Sera).

Oh, I completely forgot Discovery of Love!

This drama is perfect for this theme and I was rooted for the couple since the beginning. I really liked their jobs too.

I forgot to mention one for the friends-to-lovers category: Fight My Way is my favorite for that.

Mystic Pop-up Bar's reunited lovers is my fave. Separated for 500 years. Chief Gwi then worked for her for the last couple of years, knowing who she is and her not knowing that her employee was her lover.

I loved that they stayed together managing the bar. They really worked hard to reach that happiness.

Does 18 Again count? Reunited with his wife and his kids, too :)

I considered it too but wasn't sure. Either way, the male lead's journey to realize he loves his family more than anything was indeed touching.
