News bites: January 10, 2023

  • As the promos continue for tvN’s Our Blooming Youth, we also got news this week about Lee Jong-hyuk’s (Bad Prosecutor) casting, taking on his first king role as Park Hyung-shik’s (Soundtrack #1) father. Also starring Jeon So-ni (Dr. Brain), the sageuk will be coming to our screens next month on February 6. [Maeil Kyungje]

  • Over on Netflix, it was announced that Choi Hyun-wook (Weak Hero Class 1) will be appearing in D.P. 2, alongside Season 1’s main cast: Jung Hae-in (Connect), Gu Kyo-hwan (Monstrous), Kim Sung-kyun (Grid), and Sohn Seok-gu (Big Bet). With filming already completed, the military drama’s second season will be launching sometime this year. [Ilgan Sports]

  • Perhaps a picture from their happier past, our story’s divorced couple Kang So-ra (Revolutionary Love) and Jang Seung-jo (Good Detective 2) are showcased in a new black-and-white poster for ENA’s Can We Be Strangers. The rom-com premieres next week on January 18, following Unlock the Boss in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [News1]
  • Sadly, we have to wait longer for the timeslip fantasy Run Into You, which stars Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) and Jin Ki-joo (Showtime Begins). KBS announced that it’s moving to their Monday-Tuesday lineup and that they’re putting a pause on their Wednesday-Thursday slot. Because Oasis has already been set to follow the currently airing Brain Works, Run Into You will be releasing later in the year. [News1]

  • Speaking of KBS’s Oasis, the period romance has added Do Sang-woo (Alchemy of Souls 2) to the cast, joining Jang Dong-yoon (Search), Seol In-ah (Business Proposal), and Choo Young-woo (Once Upon a Small Town). With scripts by Jung Hyung-soo (Kye Baek, Damo), PD Han Hee (Goodbye Mr. Black, Empress Ki) is at the helm. [KBS]
  • On the JTBC front, Kwon Yul (Mental Coach Jegal) joins Uhm Tae-gu (Hometown) and Han Sun-hwa (Work Later Drink Now 2) in the lineup for The Woman Who Plays. Based on a popular web novel by the same title, the romance has PD Kim Young-hwan directing with Na Kyung penning the scripts. [MBC]
  • New stills have been released for MBC’s Kokdu: Season of Deity, featuring the fated pair Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) and Im Soo-hyang (Doctor Lawyer) as well as demigods Kim In-kwon (The Good Detective 2) and Cha Chung-hwa (Why Her). The fantasy romance is slated to air this month on January 27. [MBC (1), (2)]

Can we be strangers is the drama I am most excited about. I really hope it is good and a nice lovely romance without crime shenanigans.

1 - what about the actress playing obviously deceased (because no angsty sageuk hero is allowed to have both of his parents alive, well and loving) royal mom tho?

5 - totally forgot about this drama... Hopefully it'll revitalize Jang Dong Yoon's undeservedly hindered career.

7 - how to keep expectations wisely low when those stills alone make me excited?

Looking forward, after seeing the promos for Island, for fewer fantasies in 2023 where the male lead is a cocky superhero who disposes of enemies easily and with a swagger, while the female lead is a plot point but otherwise baggage who has to protected and rescued over and over and over again for sixteen freaking hours. We had too many of them over the last couple years.
