Jang Dong-yoon finds a bittersweet Oasis

The first teaser has arrived for KBS’s period romance Oasis with Jang Dong-yoon (Search), Seol In-ah (Business Proposal), and Choo Young-woo (Once Upon a Small Town) taking us through the blooms of their friendship and love, before spiraling us into the story’s angst.

Set during the turbulent 1980s in South Korea, our poor but bright country boy Lee Doo-hak (Jang Dong-yoon) is smitten from the get-go when the confident Seoulite Oh Jung-shin (Seol In-ah) moves into town.

Together with top student Choi Chul-woong (Choo Young-woo), the three become fast friends. But alas, as this is dramaland, trouble starts to brew in the form of love triangles as well as the tragic circumstances of their times.

The video teaser begins in happy landscapes with our two boys racing off to school together as Chul-woong asks Doo-hak, “Hyung, do you think you can beat me.” The appearing text screen explains that this was, “Our brightest moments.” We then cut to Doo-hak’s first encounter with Jung-shin and we follow our trio through the sequence as their friendship grows.

Doo-hak shares that Jung-shin’s face keeps flashing before his eyes and that his heart sounds like a beating drum. But Jung-shin calls them crazy, appalled at their thinking that she would want to date when they’ve caused her so much suffering. Still, she surprises Doo-hak by kissing him in the field, leading to an angry Chul-woong stalking off.

Confronting Chul-woong in the rain, Doo-hak questions, “Is it okay if you live and I die?” But when Doo-hak is taken away by the police, Chul-woong just stands by while Jung-shin tries to protest. We then jump to our trio at Doo-hak’s court hearing and we close on his narration: “If I didn’t meet you then, would that have changed my fate?”

Directed by PD Han Hee (Goodbye Mr. Black, Empress Ki) with Jung Hyung-soo (Kye Baek, Damo) penning the scripts, Oasis premieres on March 6 in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot.

Ugh. I was thinking about trying it for the main couple, but I certainly do not need any turbulent times heavy angstfest on my screen when I already have way too much of it irl... Plus plot looks very Monte-Cristo-ish. More ugh, given my hate for love triangle-rooted bloody mess. Oh well, guess I'll just save for the "need to cry a lot" days.

I really like the 3 actors! I'm so ready for it!

It reminds me Inspiring Generation with Kwak Dong-Yeon as the young ML before they changed the writer...

The cakey brownface makeup is so unnecessary. I get that the show is trying to sell these boys as real, salt-of-the-earth small-town young men, instead of the specimens of male beauty they actually are. But they just look unnatural here. I don’t know whose fault it is - the lighting or makeup crew - but it’s enough of a distraction to the eye to lower my excitement for the show.

And that’s before the love triangle antics. The times were tragic enough without that!

Yes the deliberate skin darkening was quite a choice 😑.

I can literally see the caked layers on Jang Dong-yoon’s face. What the hell were the thinking? Not only would it be a huge distraction from his acting, but it’s also just… such a disastrous choice.

It was all I could see while watching the teaser. Definitely distracting and unnecessary.

Why do that obvious and dastardly makeup when they could make different casting, lighting, and editing choices? Mind-boggling.

It does seem like male leads actually got some natural tan for the role, but the added makeup and that heavy sepia filter made them look like they are playing not just the regular country boys, but the country boys who hate bathing on principle.

They look like country boys with access to foundation several times their natural skin tones.

I'd say both, because not only the shade is terribly wrong, it's also painfully unevenly applied.

The kdrama industry would blow itself up before hiring darker-skinned actors. As for the lighting and editing, I have no clue and I don’t get it.

I was thinking they look like they’re 30.

30 y.o. you mean? Because it's Jang Dong Yoon's real age lol))) Other dude is much younger, I think.

I remember the 1980s vividly. Worst decade of my life (except at the end, when I met my wife.)

A coming of age drama set in the eighties with an angry love triangle? I'll save this for days when I'm feeling too good about myself, or if I suddenly find myself getting optimistic about prospects for universal human happiness.

In other words, you'd have to pay me IMF bailout money to watch this. (Oh, wait, that was the 1990s! Maybe I don't remember the late twentieth century as well I thought!)

I still feel for Jang Dong-yoon over the JOSEON EXORCIST (2021) fiasco and being on the Min Ho Young ship from A POEM A DAY (2018) I will give KBS’s OASIS a shot if KBS does the right thing and releases it to Viki US. I don’t know if it will matter but there is a 7 year gap in RL between the ‘boys’ with JDY at 30 and Choo Young-woo at 23. CYW is a blank slate for me but I enjoyed Seol In-ah in BUSINESS PROPOSAL last year.
