The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

If Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and The Moon That Embraces the Sun had a baby, it’d definitely be The Forbidden Marriage. Drawing inspiration from its parent dramas with light themes masking a sad story, our forbidden tale begins.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

Hijinks-y and hilarious is how I’ll describe the first week of this crazy drama, with its even crazier leading lady YE SO-RANG (Park Joo-hyun) who runs a scam marriage compatibility business with her partner-in-crime MR. AX (Choi Deok-moon). Business has never been better for the con artists — despite the marriage ban in Joseon which has been in place for seven years, thanks to the king LEE HEON’s (Kim Young-dae) refusal to take a new wife after the death of the crown princess.

Officially, the crown princess committed suicide, but Heon is convinced she was actually murdered, and his refusal to remarry stems from his fear of putting another woman in the same position. That, and his love for the late crown princess, because unlike the stoic king we see now, Heon was such a lover boy back then as crown prince. And it’s unfortunate that while the crown princess loved him too, she was unable to display those emotions in full — almost as if she knew she wasn’t going to last long in her position.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

Heon has since been subjected to all sorts of rumors ranging from his tyranny to his alleged impotence, and even insinuations that he’s gay. Lol. And our token evil minister of war MINISTER JO (Yang Dong-geun) doesn’t fail to rub the rumors in at every given opportunity under the guise of concern about the plummeting birth rate in Joseon.

Every attempt by Heon’s attendants to get him to at least produce an heir falls through, and it must be tough being one of the attendants on the king’s side. Well, except if you’re investigator LEE SHIN-WON (Kim Woo-seok) who’s also the king’s best friend. While Shin-won understands Heon’s reluctance to remarry, he’s also not afraid to call him out on troubles the marriage ban has placed on the citizens — and this is totally not because Shin-won is looking to wed a certain lady from his past. Hmmm.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

So-rang and Mr. Ax take their matchmaking business to Hanyang under the auspices of a tea house, and I really love the art design of the place — it’s very colorful, just like the palette of the rest of the drama. So-rang and Mr. Ax even hire romance novel writer HAE-YOUNG (Jung Bo-min) to ghostwrite love letters for their clients, and I’m dying at the titles of Hae-young’s famous novels: Scholar From the Stars, Heirs of Arabia, and Concubines of the Sun. Lol.

The infamy of the matchmaking establishment soon spreads to the king’s ears, and he visits alongside Shin-won — who has to physically restrain him from barging in to prove his vitality to So-rang when they overhear her tell some clients that the king is impotent. Aigoo, Kim Young-dae. Still using the same playbook from Shooting Stars? Heh.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2 The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

Since stripping doesn’t work, Heon does the next best thing: arrange for So-rang’s arrest. But So-rang is used to evading the police, and out she flies from the fence down into Shin-won’s arms. Heh. From his expression, he has finally found the lady from his past, but that doesn’t stop him from whisking her to jail where she is given two options: to repent of her actions, or remain locked up. So-rang goes with option C: pretend to be possessed by the crown princess’s ghost. And while her antics are hilarious, I feel bad for Heon who’s really out there baring his emotions to a fraud.

I can’t blame him, though. So-rang is very convincing, and she even manages to guess the nickname Heon wanted the crown princess to address him with — Hunny from Heon. Seriously? Lol. While I’m barely at beginner level in understanding Korean, I can tell that there’s a modern flair to their speaking style in this drama, and it’s not just from this scene. The modern ad-libs kinda make the banter between characters sound even funnier, and it’s not out of place because this is a fusion sageuk where almost anything goes.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

Heon decides to keep So-rang by his side with strict instructions for Shin-won to protect her, and it’s such a bad, bad idea to keep these two in proximity. Actually, So-rang’s real name is YE HYEON-SEON, and she’s the daughter of the Minister of General Affairs who used to be engaged to Shin-won. While they hadn’t met in person, they were both looking forward to their upcoming wedding, and their excitement at the thought of getting married was so cute!

Unfortunately, So-rang’s stepmother had her sent off the Cliff of Doom — and spun a lie to her father that So-rang had run off with another man — in a bid to swap the bride with her own unmarried daughter on hearing about the imminent marriage ban. Thankfully, Shin-won already saw the face of his original bride after sneaking into her house earlier, so he halts the wedding proceedings a few moments before the marriage ban is officially announced. And just like the king who hasn’t forgotten about the crown princess, Shin-won hasn’t forgotten about So-rang — even becoming an investigator just so he can find his bride. *Sniff*

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

In the present, Shin-won and So-rang agree to be friends, and he even tells her about his engagement although So-rang has since known that he was her fiancé based on his name. But since Cinderella is on the run from Stepmother Dearest — who happens to be close enough to the Dowager for frequent visits (and guess who is now a palace maid? Hahaha) — So-rang can’t admit it. Shin-won also choses silence over losing her again, as he doesn’t want her to flee if he unearths her identity as Hyeon-seon. So he lies that he can’t remember his fiancée’s face when she asks, and this is such a heartbreaking and cruel twist of fate for both of them.

So-rang continues to fumble her way through her new career as a palace maid (under the assumed name of SUN-AH), and her get out of jail free card works every time with the king. “The crown princess is right beside us,” “The crown princess said you should feed me.” Blah blah blah. It will never not be funny how Heon seriously swallows So-rang’s nonsense, but it’s pitiful as well because he must really miss his late wife enough to hang onto little glimmers of her presence this way.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2 The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

So-rang’s methods might be spontaneous and crazy, but we can’t deny that she has brought back a bit of spark to Heon’s life — and some excitement to the king’s quarters. To tire him out enough to sleep so that the other maids can get some much needed shuteye, So-rang pits him against Shin-won in a battle for the crown of sexiest man in Joseon — leading to sparring sessions with Shin-won for her amusement, and shirtless scenes for our drooling pleasure. Heh.

And when that doesn’t work, she turns to bedside stories about a goblin with a sword in his chest, and I’m in tears at the visuals the drama provides down to the red scarf and buckwheat flowers against a river backdrop! Hotel del Luna also makes an appearance with an equally hilarious reenactment, and I think Under the Queen’s Umbrella was hinted at too. The common denominator in her tales is the marriage ban issue which she masterfully weaves into the stories, until she succeeds in getting him to sleep. Phew!

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

By morning, all the bags underneath Heon’s eyes have relocated to So-rang’s face, and he thinks she spent the night fighting with an evil ghost. Lol. As she drags her stiff bones out of his room, she catches Minister Jo’s eyes until COURT LADY WON (Hwang Jung-min) manages to divert his attention away from So-rang. But how long until he finds out that the palace maid he saw is not Sun-ah the oldie, but So-rang the crazy — especially since Heon has no immediate plans of letting So-rang leave his side?

The realization that she might have to spend the rest of her life as a shadow of the late crown princess soon hits So-rang, and guilt sets in as the gravity of the situation she dug herself into now weighs heavily on her. This is where we wrap things up for our premiere week, which was as fun as I expected it to be. Park Joo-hyun really sells her act as the grade A level scammer, and while Kim Young-dae is not really giving it as the grieving widowed king, he does have great comedic timing and expressions — especially with his eyes.

The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2 The Forbidden Marriage: Episodes 1-2

Outside the fun, there were little seeds of evil machinations and palace politics sown here and there in the drama, but they don’t look too serious enough to derail the story. (Who am I kidding, though? I’ve been burnt in the past by dramas I trusted). Like I said earlier, the drama reminds me of The Moon That Embraces the Sun: a scheme against the crown princess’s life, a king unable to move on after her death, a king keeping a shaman who supposedly sees the late crown princess by his side, eventually falling for said ghost-seer — and of course, the inevitable love triangle with the man who fell for her first.

As for the Moonlight Drawn by Clouds similarities: bright color schemes, a tramp and matchmaking heroine with an ahjussi partner-in-crime, first meeting the king outside the palace, unwillingly getting dragged into the palace to become his attendant, and a love triangle. Again. Anyway, since both dramas had a great run and ended well (the other leg of the love triangle died in both cases, but that’s not the point here), The Forbidden Marriage has no choice but to continue — and end — with this fun and light-hearted pace it set out with.

I think the third drama she regaled him with was actually Joseon-ish Sky Castle 😂.

I liked this. It was fun. The Joseon drama reenactments were funny and there's just enough mystery to provide a semblance of a plot. My favourite part was when she could hear the flute and Mr. Ax asked her if she were an animal lol. I like that she's solving the king's problems by fairly simple methods and by just being her crazy self.

Hope the show retains that spirit - the less we see of the creepy Minister the better (I think I heard his voice in the strangling-the-Crown-Princess scene?).

Yes, probably Sky Castle specifically, but if the clue is just a place where mothers push their sons to do well on exams, that doesn't really narrow it down much more than just -- a kdrama.

Thanks for the recap Unit! ^^
The Forbidden Marriage has no choice but to continue — and end — with this fun and light-hearted pace it set out with Amen to that. This show is so much fun! I really hope it stays like that.

I'm loving all the main characters! They better find another girl for our SML otherwise I'll feel too bad for him. He's such a cutie.
The FL is by far my favorite character. That girl is awesome. She's bold, chill, smart, and fun!
The ML makes me cry with him, so I hope he stops crying soon. Damn, I can feel his sorrow and desperation in the air. That makes me feel conflicted about what the FL's doing. I feel like she can help him move on, but in a wrong way? I'm just scared of his reaction when he finds out everything was fake. I feel like it would be double pain (since I'm pretty sure he'll be in love with her by then).
I just want him to stop being in pain.
I also feel bad for our SML. The girl that was supposed to be his wife is going to end up with his bestie. I mean, if it wasn't for her stepmother (who tried to kill her) and his bestie (who banned marriage), they would be celebrating their 7th marriage anniversary. 🧐
If my boy ends alone, that's really mean from the writer, for real. 🤣

I also like the secondary characters like her coworkers, the court lady and eunuch. They're all fun and cute. They nailed it! 😂 (That scene was hilarious ROFL).

I don't know, but I think December is on gonna be on fire. I'm really enjoying my dramas. ☺️

Surrounded by five kids and a puppy! We know they were definitely going to make babiessssss with the way they both blushed at the thought of their first night together. 🤭🤭

I struggled to get into the first episode but by the second one I could see the potential. I do struggle with the palace politics though and I think this one is particularly bad as that minister killed the princess and then would not let crown Prince mourn her officially by having her name and family disgraced with the death labelled as a suicide. The constant torture with the random noises and killing another woman every year is beyond cruel.

I like that the scammer is going to be the right woman to heal him but it would be better if she is the transition person in a platonic way so he can marry an appropriate Queen candidate and because if she marries his best friend they can all hang out with no hard feelings. Her mentor with his genuine skills could be brought in to the palace too and between the three of them they can keep all evil doers away from the king.

Just guessing, but it looks like the Joseon equivalent of a fabric and linens store - there were bolts and baskets of fabric as well as folded quilts on shelves, and the hanging fabric might be for display or drying after being dyed.

That or it's a gisaeng house with NO privacy.

The candidates for Queen seem to be selected by the Dowager based on the Stepmom's recommendation, and I don't trust that woman with anything that has to do with a wedding.

So-rang and Heon + Bestie and romance novelist = fun hangouts in the pink tea house. 😃

Of course I forgot the King is surrounded by dodgy people who needed the Crown princess gone for a reason so they are going to be controlling whoever becomes his new wife too. I wonder if evil minister has a daughter or friend with daughter he wants in that role.

Ha, they went there - Kim Young-dae actually did threaten to drop his trousers to prove he’s not a eunuch! And Lurch the senior eunuch was a comic gem, especially when he straightened up to his full extent. When ‘Biaguhra’ turned out to be a *blue* powder I knew we were in for a good time. I have a feeling I’m missing at least half of the innuendo in the dialogue, though. I’m ill-equipped to catch all these meta moments and wordplay so I’ll have to hope Viki subbers and the recaps help me out. Our FL has the limitless self-confidence of a born con artist, but I’d bet that - to her own surprise - she’s going to discover she has some genuine supernatural ability. I also can’t quite believe I’m watching something that looks like a sageuk, even if it doesn’t act much like one so far.

@elinor I thought that reference to the "controversy" of "Sh**ting Stars was daring too. You know, as well, I thought the 3rd story in the "Arabian Nights" reference was a "a group of mothers who pressured their children to pass exams" referring to another contemporary drama like the Green Mother's Club The other thing that was clever was to make the second male lead an "inspector"--in other words a policeman--how many times have we seen that in romances. The final thing was to have Kim Young Dae display his impressive torso and have the FL laugh rather than the usual gasp of admiration.
That said, I'm not sure that this isn't a little too up and down in tone, especially with the grim murder subplot. Also, I'm the same with you about sageuks, though Yo So-Rang has to be one of the most contemporary court maids ever depicted--wouldn't surprise me to have her suggest that the whole court go clubbing.

Wait, there was another fairly recent sageuk where the second lead was a very smart investigator. What was it? Surely not Bossam (2nd lead son of a noble family), not Lovers of the Red Sky (2nd lead a prince)... He met the female lead on a bridge and she was the one who was separated from him as they were children, and the petals kept falling over them... I remember it was one I had worked on. Was it "100 Days My Prince"? Maybe.
The description said: Jeong Jae Yun (정 제 윤): Formerly ranked 7a at the capital, then Magistrate (6b) of the Songjoo village, then hidden advisor of the Crown Prince. Has a one-sided love for Hong Shim. He suffers from prosopagnosia or "face blindness", which causes him to initially be unable to recognize Won Deuk as the Crown Prince. The only face that he could recognize is Hong Shim's. He is smart and wise, and is one of the few people to earn Yi Yul's trust.

As a sageuk purist (okay, not much of a purist if my favorites are the likes of Jumong and Queen Seon Deok), I couldn't decide if this show made me want to strangle mbc or raise my white flag of surrender to them. Kim Young Dae was...not terrible and definitely not great, questionable [lack of] nuance aside, he kinda confirmed my suspicions that he doesn't have the gravitas to play a king. At this stage, he still reminds me of a early-mid career kang dong won; very pretty but very...green in the acting department. *dodges tomatoes*
Loved the actress park ju hyun though. The writer better bow to her because with all the silliness they incorporated (like damn...I read and loved the webtoon but sheesh, don't LITERALLY copy paste things as they happened in the original into a live action. my humorless self is unamused.) so rang could've easily been dismissed as overacting and annoying.
That said, the positives: The BGM/ost is *chef's kiss*. These are the signature mbc sageuk vibes I crave. The future serious parts have potential.
Wish mbc kept heading in more of a Red Sleeve direction (with more episodes, ehem), but alas. Still already better than moon that embraces the sun (minus yeo jin goo+kim yoo jung's existence). I said what I said.

Do you remember Hyun-woo and Ji Hyun in "THE GREAT KING SEJONG?" I fell in love with them there.

I think the Kim duo are trying to start from the beginning to connect all of their sageuks together. If Part 2 has something to do with the Proto–Three Kingdoms period, I will watch it.

What I'm waiting for is "GOGURYEO” by Kim Jin-myung but it's going to take forever.

but YES, I loved them in king sejong as well. Even her cameo in that stupid hana kimi remake when she had scenes with lee hyun woo.

1

I fail to see HOW Arthdal Pt2 can already be at Proto Three Kingdoms since Arthdal in general is supposed to be about the Founding Myth of Gojoseon (which was founded roughly 2333 BC according to the myth) and it's founder and god-king, Dangun, and our dearly beloved Chosen Ones, specifically Carrot Boy (the aforementioned to-be god-king), hasn't founded ANYTHING yet. Even though PT2 is supposed to be several decades on from PT1, the time line still doesn't work.
On the other hand, Arthdal never did make much sense, so it is hardly going to try in PT2 either.
The Vampire Theory continues to make the most sense: perhaps they are all immortal unless killed.

2

@sicarius

I have amnesia every time ARTH is mentioned. Song Ji-na's version of the myth made more sense in LEGEND, although it was extended to Gwanggaeto the Great.
You are right about the timeline. I know it doesn't make much sense, but I prefer the Proto–Three Kingdoms period since it'll take us back to JUMONG, who is more interesting than any of these characters.

Lol. I didn't realise this was an MBC drama. Hopefully it delivers on the entertainment factor, since beanies seem to like it. For me it's a pass.

QUEEN SEON DEOK and JUMONG are my favs! They had their amusing moments and lovable funny characters, though of course they were more on the serious side. I just can't get into the more recent lighter, ahistorical dramas. It's fine to have fictional kings in fictional Joseon, but after a few dramas they all merge in brain under the category of "stereotype king", with the same broody personality and nothing that really sets them apart from others.

Oh well. I guess I'll go back to Chinese dramas for a while. I'm enjoying THE LONG RIVER but ran out of subtitled episodes. *cries*.

2

Some writers do fiction hoping to do away with the proper custom and tradition.
I don't have much patience, to be honest. Why can't they tell their fictional story but keep the custom and traditions intact? That's what makes it a sageuk.

Spoiler coming. I am suspending disbelief and going along for the ride. I am enjoying the humor.
One of the most ridiculous scenes so far is a flashback of the Crown Prince on his knees outside the King’s meeting hall pleading to be allowed to have a funeral for the Crown Princess which is forbidden because her death is a presumed suicide. Evil Minster Jo (portrayed by ‘chewing up the scenery’ Yang Dong-geun) stands at the top of the steps and tells the CP (very publicly) it doesn’t matter what the King will say. Minister Jo put the King on the throne so what matters what he says. So get lost. No funeral. That is the gist of it. 100 percent totally absurd.

But this show never claimed to be a pure sageuk. It made it abundantly clear in the first few seconds, and of course it was confirmed during the course of the episode.

I LOLed when they did that humorous disclaimer - "there is an Earth-like planet with a country called Joseon. If it looks familiar - well that's on you!" I think these fusion sageuks should just make up fictional royalty instead of using real life people and fictionalizing them too much. There really should be two genres - sageuk for more historical stuff and costume drama for more purely fictional stuff that take place in historical clothing.

Have to agree on Kim Young Dae' acting unfortunately. For me he also comes off little too green still and is lacking some natural charm to keep all these different sides to his character grounded. At the moment it feels like he is playing in three different series, in one he mourns his wife to the point of losing his mind, in the second he's playing the easily gullible stuck-up a la sh**ting stars and in the third he's doing some questionable aegyo.
I'm sure he'll improve over time and I wish him best of luck, but at the moment he's bitten more than he can chew.
I like the show a lot otherwise, it's nice and light and the FL is a hoot. For some inexplainable reason I laughed so much when they finished the dinner lol

I think he has loads of charm and charisma. The character of the king is written as childish and gullible and not very kintgly. But that's on the writers! And of course he's been told by the director that this is more than everything a comedy.
However, he's manning up the more the episodes advance, for her sake, and you'll see this if you watch the next ones. As if she has brought up a more decisive side of the king.

He doesn't have the gravitas to play a king? But did you notice how this king's character is written? The situations, his actions, his words... The actor just followed what the character suggested. And I thought he did it brilliantly. He brought up the vulnerability, the troubling charm, but also the childishness and unstable mind of someone who has gone through a lot and has almost relinquished his power, his will, his desire to live, struggling as he is with nightmares and visions and guilt. And the evil people around him doing everything to keep him that way.
But, as the episodes progress, we see him gradually getting out of that slump - mainly thanks to our girl. Becoming more serious, more human, more reasonable, and more decisive. Not to mention less petty. The actor interprets those nuances in a very credible and subtle way.

The love triangle is already hurtful. Both of the male leads deserve to find love, they were so cute being in love in the past. The FL deserves to get her revenge against her step-mother!

I don't really take this drama as a sageuk but just as a normal rom-com in costume. Neither of the character/actor looks or sounds in a sageuk.

That's probably the best way to watch it, as a "normal rom-com in costume". If you are a sageuk fan like me, you can't really overlook how modern the drama is.

I think you're right. In the first episode, for a second I thought I missed something and the FL was actually from the present (2022) and she traveled in time. LOL

Even more the new teahouse hire. That girl with the lipstick and the bangs (was it Hae Yeong?). Her appearance was seriously clashing with everything around her.

Maybe it is mainly the music used in the drama, but I get some very strong Mr. Queen vibes, reinforced by the viewer hearing the thoughts of the adorable leading lady and her problem solving skills.

Love this drama, the humour and (another) crying king. It will be a heart breaking love triangle. Park Joo-hyun is a favourite of mine and she does the comedy really well.

I haven't watched this, but just reading the recap I get strong Mr Queen vibes too!!!
I didn't plan to watch this initially, but I'm quite tempted now.
If it stays good I might jump on board too at some point!

The best part of this drama is when she is cutting uo and being ridiculous. The worse parts of this drama are the serious parts, the stupid love triangle, and the murder mystery. I have to determine if the cutting up part is worth it.

The first two episodes were fun, I'm looking forward to the coming weeks. This drama reminds me a bit of a fairy tale, including wicked stepmother as well as stories from 1001 nights.

Fortunately, I'm immune to SL syndrome, so I'm rooting for the king to have a happy ending with So-rang (but I admit I was slightly worried researching on the internet how the webtoon ends).

Hmm... the webtoon has a predictably happy ending with the leads so I'm confused what you read from the internet.

I guess I expressed myself a little inaccurately. I wanted to know how it would end, so I looked for the webtoon on the internet.

I enjoyed the first two episodes. This is the second drama in a couple of weeks showing the FL chow down like she hasn’t eaten in a month. The other was SUMMER STRIKE where the FL did the same thing but simultaneously got stinking drunk.
When So-rang pulled out the booze I figured here we go again with the madatory scene of the FL getting sloshed. Fortunately that did not happen and the scene was used to fill in the back story of Shin-won and So-rang.

It took me a while to get into this but by the second episode I was in. I loved the meta references and as per some other beanies I think this is a rom com with costumes as opposed to a saegeuk.

I admit that I had low expectations for this drama, and I'm so glad that this drama is defying them because I'm in love with the first two episodes. I usually take awhile to warm up to Park Joo-hyun, but she has charmed me. I like how she has added some swagger to the webtoon FL's. Kim Young-dae is still rough in his acting in some places, but he is great at playing the naive romantic marshmallow who looks like a rebel. And the SML is adorable! The actor's smiling face reminds me of Jin Ki-joo's

The drama reminds me a bit of 100 Days My Prince - not just because of royalty effing around with dumb marriage laws. It's the way it balances humor with just lush romance. And it's got a SML who would have also matched well with the FL. I love the slick editing and humorous cut-to which adds dynamism to the webtoon. And the music is just beautiful.

I really like the modern touches too to add some relatability. Times may change, but romance novels are always popular; erectile dysfunction treatments existed; and there are solo people who don't want to be solo. And currently, south korea is also struggling with the declining birthrate, just like how this alterna-Joseon is with marriage being banned.

I've watched past these two episodes now so just coming by to record for idk posterity or something that I loved this premiere week. It was so much fun, Park Joo-hyun is hilarious and amazing, and the witty dialogue and meta references made me laugh out loud.

Really hoping for another Secret Royal Inspector and Joy, which was such a fun fusion.
