Premiere Watch: The Glory, Island

It’s time to welcome the final two dramas of 2022. This weekend we have Netflix’s high-buzz revenge thriller, and TVING’s smaller (but still kinda buzzy) fantasy action thriller. I guess the year’s going out with thrills!

The Glory

Time slot: Friday (Single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Revenge, thriller
Episode count: 8 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: So much buzz, it’s almost exhausting! The Glory, Netflix’s final original drama of 2022, stars Song Hye-gyo and Lee Do-hyun in a tale written by none other than Kim Eun-sook. Word on the street is it’s dark and compelling — which makes sense, since it’s about a bullied and abused heroine who brings down a world of hurt on her past tormentors. There are no puppies and sunshine in this one, folks. Also worth noting, Netflix has cut the series in two, with Part 2 (a.k.a. the second half of the run) set to premiere in March of 2023.

TL;DR: Kim Eun-sook writing for Netflix. This oughtta be interesting.

Island

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Fantasy, action, thriller
Episode count: 6 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: TVING’s Island comes with an exciting cast of Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and (my beloved) Sung Joon — in addition to a hefty dose of CGI evil spirits and supernatural encounters. Adapted from a manhwa by the same name, the production has had a lot of fun playing up that angle, so let’s hope that means a no-holds-barred drama that has fun and is fun. Maybe with a bit of campiness too? That would be nice. And sadly, as with The Glory above, this drama is also set to endure a two-part structure (why why why!), with six additional episodes possibly maybe headed our way after Part 1 airs.

TL;DR: Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, fantasy premise to fill the coming Alchemy of Souls void?

There is probably nothing that can fill the coming Alchemy of Souls void, but I will happily be watching Island regardless. Basically everything I learn about it (except the two part thing) sounds right up my alley, and even if it wasn't, I would probably still watch just for Kim Nam-gil.

I'll wait to see what others think of The Glory. It looks like kind of a lot.

The good part of part 2 is we get to see Kim Nam-gil AGAIN!

Haha, fair enough! It looks like it will come out fairly quickly too. My main complaint with Part 2s is when there is uncertainty about whether they will happen or not. If it's planned from the beginning, it's not so bad because it means they (hopefully) wrote the story with the correct number of episodes in mind.

Nooo, I didn't know Island was split; I was looking forward to watching it! Supposedly, Part 2 airs in February, so it's not that long of a wait in-between.

I'll just hold off on starting The Glory until Part 2 drops. I enjoy Kim Eun-sook dramas, and will watch anything with Lee Do-hyun.

Plus variety shows since Lee Do-hyun has the wittiest personality.

Neither of them piques my interest...

After Revenge of Others and Weak Hero Class, both with bullying and pure violence without any message, not sure I want to watch another drama about bullying... Clearly, the adults are still the same...

Is Weak Hero that bad?
I am planning to watch it, actually.

If you don't mind to see teenagers fighting and adults being missing during the whole drama, the execution wasn't bad.

No it is excellent and worth watching. Yes, it is all about bullying in school but it is about how kids fight back and gain their own respect. Very well done.

Realistic? I found it far from realistic...

It wasn't realistic and the message of part 1 was violence leads to violence. Very simplistic and one of the characters changed personality just to fit the plot.

Waiting for Island to drop tomorrow! I really like the main cast involved.

It's not showing up in Amazon Europe (I've tried both UK and Germany). Anyone know of a (legal) alternative? Otherwise I guess I'll have to VPN it

I can't find it either (Germany). I tried with US VPN, but it doesn't show up there as well. Or I'm just blind. 🤷

I just found it on Amazon Prime USA. It is not easy to find and doesn't come up in a search. You have to go to the TV shows category and swipe through the featured/advertised shows section at the top.

Waiting for one day for there to be a 2 part drama that is only 3 episodes per part.

I'm liking the look of both. I don't think I can stomach any more bullying scenes since the ones in kdramas are just particularly brutal, so I will probably FF through some parts of Glory. Hope Island can give Sung Joon's career a little boost. I'm interested but not interested enough to subscribe to prime to just watch half the series.

I don't know why, but the photo for the Island cast really got my attention in a "one of these things is not like the other" way. Here are four men, not only fully clothed from the neck down, but wearing jackets besides. And beside them, Lee Da-hee dressed in a short skirt and a low-cut top. Either they're warm in their outfits and she's cold in hers, or she's comfortable and they're overheating. I feel like this photo says something about society's widely differing expectations and beauty standards for men and women.

I agree. I’ve noticed this too in the western film premie during the cold/coldish weather where male actors by and large wear nice and warm suits and some of the female actors are wearing these tiny dresses in which they seem to be uncomfortable or cold even if they are inside. Decorative use of women has always crossed borders.

Arghhhh I had no idea Island was split into parts! All I knew was the main cast and that the drama was a supernatural, possibly scary one.

I will still be watching. XD

Thank you all for pointing Island availability on Amazon Prime Video. It is also available in the South East Asia region via This streaming provider. That adds to one more legal provider to pay for.I had ended my Iqiyi subscription seeing they no longer provide any kdramas.
Gave Amazon Prime Video social media account a nudge to include kdramas into its promotions on their social media but I still see Zero promotions. Quite sneakily provide their services in the SEA region.

Omg. What is with these parts? Don’t force a series on dramas that are not made to be series.

Arghhhhh.

I want to check out both but don’t want to wait for second part (as I forget the plot while I wait. Lol)

Sigh.

Disappointed that Island had to be a two-parter as well, but I suppose I can suppress my irritation for Kim Nam-gil. I hope it’s good though. That’s all I ask at the end of the day.

As for The Glory… *sigh*. The promotions have been gorgeous and captivating, but Kim Eun-sook has burned me too many times for me to give her yet another chance. And Song Hye-kyo’s acting hasn’t impressed me in over a decade. Unless I hear universally rave reviews or a ton of buzz around certain actors I do like (i.e. Lee Do-hyun, Park Sung-hoon, Yeom Hye-ran), I think I’m gonna pass on this one. I don’t trust KES to give this very contentious and timely topic the seriousness or gravitas it needs - that 18+ rating is not convincing me.

I watched one and a half eps of “Island’. What an objectionable and monotonous bore. Even worse, depicting the torture of children as well as having a damsel in distress who we are told is the ‘chosen’ one but the story is just so unconvincingly set up that it is hard to believe she is supposed to be this important protagonist. So that’s it for me.

I guess I will check out Island. As for "Glory", its a pass, since I avoid song hye kyo dramas altogether.

For those of us that admire Park Sung-Hoon’s acting abilities, just a wee recap of what he has experienced in the last while.
He was cast in The Joseon Exorcist which never saw the light of day. Then he signed up to do Happiness which was recast with Park Hyung Shik. I believe he did tv shows next. He got a part in The Glory and it has been delayed for some time. Then the FL is cast and it’s Song Hye-kyo. I don’t believe she has the breadth of experience to pull off this role. Despite this, The Glory is attached to only her name for the most part.
Chopping the drama in two will cause people to skip the first part and wait until the second part airs to tune in. And understandably. This genre is not one that can afford to have its momentum come to a screeching halt. So now the first part will amass low viewership.
I noticed in the first cast photo that he looked overweight and unhappy. (His reefer was gorgeous!) Apparently he and his longtime love parted ways. They were definitely headed for marriage.
I have to wonder what role, if any, being jerked around by the industry may have played?
It upsets me because he is a unique talent, an actor’s actor, who has mastered the art of playing serial killers that make your hairs stand on end. Fortunately, he is quite versatile and isn’t typecast into that role.
Funny thing about The Glory, in all the blurbs I have read so far, not one has mentioned which role he plays!
I want to support his work, and I hope he gets back on track very soon. I just don’t know if The Glory will have been worth his efforts.
