Island: Episodes 1-2

Island is finally here, and it’s every bit the thrilling, amusing, and campy rollercoaster ride I was anticipating. I’m instantly in love with its characters, intrigued by its world, and interested to find out more.

EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP

“Island

The drama’s premiere opens with a brief history of the dol hareubang — the ubiquitous “stone grandfather” statues unique to Jeju Island. Originally known as Tamra Island, the land was one where all inhabitants coexisted in harmony. But chaos and conflict soon took hold, and the blood of the 46 children of God was sealed away in the dol hareubang, in order to block Hell’s Gate and prevent monsters from crawling out.

To conceal and protect the real 46, many more dol hareubang were created. However, we soon realize that the more pressing problem isn’t the counterfeit dol hareubang, but the ones imbued with evil by a mysterious man. As a newlywed couple approaches a pair of dol hareubang, a black fog overtakes them, turning both into demons and leaving blood-filled leeches behind.

“Island

Now a grotesque monster, the groom tears into the terrified wedding photographer, until a dagger flies through the air and pierces the demon in the skull. It’s our immortal protagonist BAN (Kim Nam-gil!) to the rescue, whose entrance is accompanied by a grandiose soundtrack and hero backlighting.

That pretty much sets the tone for the drama — part cool, part campy, and all around fun. Our second protagonist, chaebol heiress WON MI-HO (Lee Da-hee), is elegant and eloquent, outwitting both her spiteful aunt and an obtrusive reporter with ease. However, when Mi-ho gets into a scandal of her aunt’s making, she’s left with no choice but to board a plane to Jeju Island for some PR-friendly volunteering and reflection time.

“Island “Island

Mi-ho has barely touched down for five minutes, though, when she feels a strange throbbing in her chest. Then she encounters the demon bride, who’s in the middle of gorging on a human. Mi-ho is no match for a superpowered demon, and she eventually gets cornered in a delivery van which the demon tears into with its bare claws. It’s inches away from reaching her, and that’s when a familiar majestic soundtrack plays. It’s Ban, here to save the day!

At first, it seems like just another regular day’s work of decimating demons, but when Ban locks eyes with Mi-ho, there’s stunned recognition in his gaze. Before he can gather his wits to react, though, Mi-ho’s heart throbs again. She loses consciousness, waking up back in her bed with her worried right-hand men fussing over her.

“Island “Island

Mi-ho’s trials and tribulations don’t end there, though. She’s asked BUTLER JANG (Oh Gwang-rok) to investigate the incident her aunt orchestrated, and he’s dug up some photo evidence — which clearly captured SECRETARY KANG (Lee Soon-won) in cahoots with both the thugs and auntie dearest.

Having trusted her closest aides more than her power-hungry relatives, Mi-ho is utterly devastated, but she refuses to let her emotions get the better of her. This is a betrayal she can’t forgive, and she confronts Secretary Kang, declaring that they’ll go their separate ways from now on. She means that quite literally, too — she walks off, leaving the car to Secretary Kang.

“Island

Of course, that means Mi-ho is walking straight into danger’s grasp yet again. Secretary Kang gets turned into a demon, and once he catches up to his former charge, Mi-ho winds up in a chokehold.

Never fear, Ban is here! In the blink of an eye, he’s sliced right through Secretary Kang’s arm (which Mi-ho flings aside after belatedly realizing she’s holding onto a severed limb, LOL). Ban has an arsenal of slick moves up his sleeve, and after an impressive display of swordsmanship that slashes the demon to pieces, Secretary Kang is no more. Ohmygod, I’m torn between cringing over the campiness and squeeing over how awesome Kim Nam-gil is.

“Island “Island

Ban disappears before Butler Jang arrives, which means that to everyone else except herself, Mi-ho sounds like a spoiled rich brat who’s been hallucinating, ha. Thoroughly spooked by the encounter and frustrated that no one believes her, Mi-ho books it straight to the airport. Unfortunately, danger is still hot at her heels, and a security officer-turned-demon sparks yet another breathless pursuit (and a nerve-wracking car chase).

Once again, Mi-ho is saved by Ban, who’s looking very unimpressed. The demon plunges its claws right into Ban’s abdomen, and how does Ban react? By leveling the monster with the most deadpan stare, as if the monster has just dealt him the world’s greatest inconvenience by ruining his fine suit. HAHAHA. All the while, Mi-ho’s peeking out from behind a wall like an awestruck chipmunk watching a real-life action movie, and honestly? Same.

“Island

After all the dust has settled, Ban explains to Mi-ho that these creatures are lust demons — embodiments of evil that usurp human forms to leech off the land. They’ll follow her to the ends of the earth, because it’s written into her destiny.

Understandably, Mi-ho is equal parts bewildered and terrified. So when Ban swoops into her room that night, having just eliminated a demon on her rooftop, Mi-ho immediately latches on to the opportunity. She’s at her wits’ end — her mother is dead, her father wants her to live quietly like she’s dead, her aunt wishes she were dead. And now she’s in actual mortal peril? Mi-ho’s had enough. And so, she presents Ban with an offer — work for her. It takes Ban a second to register the words. Blink, blink. What?

“Island “Island

HAHAHA, Mi-ho writes up an employment contract for Ban, promising a handsome salary without knowing he has no need for worldly currency. Needless to say, Ban doesn’t have a family name, ID card, or phone number. LOL. Ban’s just about done humoring Mi-ho, but then he notices the bottle of sleeping pills on her bedside table.

Mi-ho’s plaintive plea for him to stay just for the night tugs at his heartstrings, and he can’t turn a blind eye to her fear and exhaustion. Thoroughly drained from the day’s events, Mi-ho nods off, and when she awakens the next morning, the contract is signed.

“Island

There’s another reason for Ban’s empathy towards Mi-ho, though. Back when he was a child, he’d been taken into a monastery as the only survivor of a lust demon attack. The head monk, in a bid to create immortal demon slayers to defeat the lust demons, commits a monstrous deed himself. He gathers the children he’s taken in, slices their backs open, and pours demon blood into them.

Only two boys survive that horrific ordeal, and they’re named Ban and GOONG-TAN. A kind young maiden named WON-JUNG frees the pair from their underground cell, but Ban’s demon side overwhelms him for a brief moment, and he bites her arm before coming back to his senses. The trio flee, but Won-jung’s worsening wound compels Ban to return with her so she can receive medical attention. Goong-tan is caught, and both boys are forced back into captivity, but Won-jung promises to return and save them one day.

“Island “Island

The next time we see this trio, they’re all grown up. It’s a joyful reunion for Won-jung, but Ban’s demon blood seizes control yet again. His sclera turns pitch black as his irises glow red, and he plunges his dagger right into Won-jung’s chest — giving her the scar that Mi-ho now sports just below her collarbone.

The context of that scene isn’t revealed just yet, but the present-day lust demons’ bloodthirsty homing instinct towards Mi-ho suggests that she’s a threat to them. This is corroborated by the archdiocese, who proclaim that Mi-ho is the one and only savior who can prevent the world’s destruction.

That ties in to our third protagonist, priest YO-HAN (Cha Eun-woo). His priestly talents far surpass his age, and his greatest weapon in an exorcism is… the hip hop music playing through his headphones. LOL, how amusingly modern.

“Island

Yo-han is brought into the Jeju estate by Butler Jang, and it’s revealed that the latter is also a priest. In fact, that’s been Butler Jang’s sole mission all these decades — to protect the savior, come what may. Whoa, I suspected there was more to Butler Jang than meets the eye, but I didn’t see this coming. How much does Butler Jang know, and what ulterior motives did he have in suggesting this Jeju trip?

It’s only been two episodes, but I’m already so invested in this fantastical tale. And the drama tells it so well, too! I had to trim out much of the humor for the sake of brevity, but let me assure you, this drama is hilarious. It’s fully aware of the absurdity of its premise, and it plays into it with gusto. I can’t count the number of times I’ve burst out laughing at the well-timed sound effects, or Ban’s increasingly incredulous expressions in the face of Mi-ho’s antics.

On that note, Kim Nam-gil is absolutely killing it in this role! I mean, I would watch literally anything for him, but his intense gaze and confident smirks as he takes on the formidable demons? Absolutely mesmerizing. Meanwhile, Lee Da-hee is charismatic and winsome as always, reminding me of why I loved her so much in I Hear Your Voice and Search: WWW. And I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive of Cha Eun-woo, but he’s doing a good job so far, exuding a boyish charm that’s immediately endearing. I can’t wait to watch our main trio team up — the dynamics are sure to be entertaining.

Kim Nam Gil is doing it for me again, lol. I like it. Mi Ho's reactions were appropriate and made sense. She didn't do anything spectacularly dumb, except for when she ran into the woods. Cha Eun Woo is fine, I expected him to be truly terrible based on what my fellow beanies were saying, but he really wasn't.

Boy is just not a main lead material if we talk about talent/skills alone despite getting such roles one after another due to his popularity. But it's the liveliest I've seen him in a drama since The Best Hit (he is a riot in that one, mainly by acting himself - overhyped top idol with heavily manufactured public persona). Seriously, funny supporting characters suit him and his acting range MUCH better than stoic Mister Perfect MLs.

He is popular cos he has lots of fans of his acting ,i think he does justice to his roles . As for cold characters he does what is required of him ,his cold characters are not created to be likeable. As for playing main lead millions will continue to tune in cos we enjoy his acting on screen.

You don't have to explain to me why he's so popular, I have eyes too))) Anyways it's always good to see a fandom that defends their bias in a nice and respectful way instead of... well, opposite. If one day my kpop faves decide to venture into acting (those of them who didn't already) I'm totally gonna use "he's good because I enjoy seeing him on my screen" argument in kdrama discussions too and, hopefully, by that time they're gonna be popular enough to have a few people support this totally valid stance^^

It is actually Priest scenes that are going viral and loved by many. Even on K platforms and forums people were saying they were said coz there were less screentime of Eunwoo

Kim Nam Gil is stealing the show in the first 2 episodes as is the accompanying soundtrack. I agree with the weecapper that the blend of humor, campiness and horror serves up an interesting and unusual mix.

I was very much looking forward to this show based on the excellent trailers. But I think we’re seeing something different than the trailers led us to believe. Its certainly not a straight-up good guys v monsters. I’m also suspecting Cha Eun Woo is playing more of a support v main role if the first 2 episodes are any indication. I’m slightly bummed it’s not an all-out drama, but as long as the humor and sense of campiness work within the storyline, it should be a watchable series. Kinda like Ghostbusters with a vengeance.

I have one early bugaboo. Lee Da -Hee and the constant sweeping back of her hair/bangs with her hands. It feels like she does it at least 10x each episode. If you’ve got bangs and they repeatedly fall in your face, it’s very disconcerting (for me at least) to see an actress/actor repeatedly sweep them back. And 5 minutes later, do it yet again. LOL. I swear if you notice it once you’ll never be able to unsee her doing it. It becomes distracting to the point of annoyance. Pin your hair back, woman! Show that beautiful face without it hiding beneath floppy bangs.

I just commented on @solstices essay “Guilty as Charged” that I’ve had to avoid the dark shows because they’re too depressing for me but … I think this combination of humor and outrageousness may be my ticket back! It sounds very appealing, thanks @solstices! Plus the added appeal of Lee Da Hae in rich-girl wardrobe (no cold shoulder sweaters!) and of course, Kim Nam Gil 🥰

So much fun! This is even more absurd and far-fetched than the promos suggested - in all the right ways. Kim Nam-gil and Lee Da-hee are exercising just enough restraint to not cross over into caricature. My only mild criticism is that a couple of the fights went on a little too long, but that gives KNG all the more time to display his world-weary badassery. I may wait a couple of weeks to continue, though, because this looks like it could help fill the Alchemy-shaped hole I expect to open up in my world after next week.

I looked forward SO MUCH to this one because Kim Nam Gil fighting monsters in a dark fantasy sounded like a dream come true on paper and trailers were actually pretty good... And then the actual opening episodes left me rather underwhelmed. Good things: acting, soundtrack, CGI (not expecting a Hollywood blockbuster level of quality really helps to appreciate what we get in kdramas more), demons makeup, horror, some humor (mostly provided by Ban/Van and Father Hallyu), certain action scenes. But the story and the way it was told is all over place: exposition flashbacks were too short and lacked details and depth to fully make me invested while a lot of screentime was wasted on useless things - like airport security officer fanboying over FL, her school job hijinks despise the fact that we'll probably never see her actually working there or her running and screaming while filming a shampoo commercial while at it again and again until it started looking silly... Directing (or editing?) also could've been way better - you do not need this many scene cuts, extra zoom-ins and Dramatic Slow-Mo™ for action scenes when you have a lead actor who can make them look super cool just with his skills alone. Half of the time I was internally yelling "Fix the camera work so I can see the stunts properly!" at my screen. Was the budget drastically cut at the last minute or something? Why is drama not utilizing fully its insanely gorgeous visual potential in form of cast and Jeju scenery? Who provides ML with an endless supply of perfectly fitting suits when he seemingly has no money? So many questions... Hope for more answers and less food for criticism next week.

Arghĥhh, I shouldn't click on this website again 🤭. There goes my curiosity about this drama 🙈.
Still half way in watching KNG (Through the Darkness), and I was hoping it will drop whole series in one-go for part 1.

I thought this series sounded familiar when it was announced. turns out I've read the manga when I was younger. i don't remember much so I went back to reread bits of it last week and wow it's so dated 😂 but in an amusing way. I'll just say the biggest difference is Cha Eunwoo being way too cool to play Yohan LOL

I loved this episode. Kim NamGil was perfect Van, Dahee was perfect Miho and Cha Eunwoo was perfect Priest Yohan. I loved Van action and dahee car chasing scene but my fav was definitely that exorcism scene and Eunwoo's italian and latin. The pronunciation was so good. Can't wait for the next episode. All 3 were awesome.

I totally agree with your takes, and thanks for the weecap @solstices!

I had a blast watching these episodes. At one point my partner looked over and said, "Are you watching Bulgasal again?" because of the fiery/blackened hands demon visuals, but despite some aesthetic similarities, this drama has a totally different feel to it. I laughed a lot while watching and it took me a couple of scenes to realize that I wasn't just laughing from delight at the cool action choreography of Kim Nam-gil, but also because it was legitimately funny! It's a welcome tone for what could have been a really dark and heavy story.

I like the lore too (but I always like lore). The origins of the demon slayers reminded me of The Witcher, and the dynamic between them and Mi-ho made me think of the one between Link and Zelda. I'm excited for more of it and more of the backstory of our leads, and thrilled that their relationship is off to a hilarious start. As usual, Kim Nam-gil's facial expressions are a major highlight, and I think my favorite was when the demon ruined his suit!

It if has KNG and LDH I have to watch, I have no other choice. And I had so much fun while watching these two first episodes. The balance between the action and the humour was perfect. Waiting to see more.

I have mentioned it before, but I was surprised by EunWoo's Italian pronunciation. I went back to check. I think it's pretty good. I can't say anything more about him right now, but I can say something about his character: did they have to make him Catholic? Really? I know it's a drama, but please invent some ancient cult or something... a Catholic Priest with earrings? Talking about a woman who would save the world that will be reborn? That is blaspehmy!!! 😂😂😂😂😂

I always find fascinating how fascinated are other cults about Catholicism...

I saw an interview where apparently when they reviewed Eun Woo’s italian the first time round they thought he did well but when it was reviewed by a native speaker he said he couldn’t understand anything so Eun woo practised until he could perfect his pronunciation.

Required fields are marked *

I didn't know this. Well done, Eun woo! It sounded credibly Italian to me and the Latin parts did sound like spoken from someone who learned Latin in Italy. Given that it's a dead language, each education system gives Latin a unique "clang". Eun woo nailed down the melody of the Italian sentences so beautifully: pausing at the right time, the right intonation, etc.

I always struggle when they make an actor speak a foreign language with what sometimes seems like 12 seconds of preparation (see Lee Hanee in One the Woman slaughtering French with brio or Baek Hyun-sung in Gaus Electronics where you could understand about 50% of the German words). I tend to blame it on the prep time or the lack of support rather than the actor/actress themselves. There's only so much they can do when nobody's helping.

Based on your analysis, I want to know your opinion on song joong ki’s Italian if you’ve watched Vincenzo. Was it any good?

Required fields are marked *

What I call good when is comes to speaking foreign languages is: being able to tell most individual words apart when the person is speaking, identifying the sounds that are made, recognising the tonality and melody of the language, and finally understanding what is said (assuming you happen to speak the language). I don't mind if someone still retains an accent when they speak a foreign language (because we all have an accent, even in our mother tongue) SJK's Italian hits all the right notes for me, especially even more because he still channelled the emotions through the foreign language without affecting either the pronunciation and the typical Italian melody. He has an accent when he speaks Italian, but then it still makes sense in the storyline as Vincenzo learned Italian as a second language after he was adopted and would have still worked somehow to maintain his Korean skills too (perhaps we need a prequel where we see young Vincenzo listening to Kpop..?) Does it affect how fluent his Italian is? Not in my opinion. As said, everyone's got an accent. I've heard some criticism regarding how sometimes words were a little tough to understand at the start of the drama. This is correct. But I don't see it necessarily as a bad thing as SJK still maintains the Italian phrase melody throughout. I've watched plenty of dramas where I didn't get 100% of the words native speakers were saying. (Shetland, a UK drama based in a rural part of Scotland is one of those, for example. Some US actors are also a tough job because they don't always enunciate properly)

An Italian YouTuber reviewed his pronunciation a while back, if you're interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O698GuAd0gc

There's another point as well here. SJK's Italian is deliberately slowed down so the audience would still catch some known sounds. This makes it sound a little off at times. If you listen to how foreign actors sounds in K drama when they speak, they tend to sound off for similar reasons. John D. Michaels (he seems to be everywhere, he's the US bar owner in Chicago Typewriter ep.1, he's also the villain in I'm Not a Robot with the iconically ham-acted line "WhAaaaT The HeeEEllLLLLL") always sounds like he's never heard of English before.

2

I have said this on Vincenzo's recaps: his Italian was good, but he would never pass as an Italian of course, but considering he had never spoken the language, I think he and his coach did a very good job.

2

🤣 Regarding religion, I'd already decided to mentally substitute "ancient clan of made-up mages" for every reference to Catholicism because otherwise I'd get too distracted wondering what's accurate and what's kdrama nonsense ten times per episode. And I had no trouble understanding CEW's bits of Italian, so credit to him for having really worked on it.

I thought the monastery looked familiar - it's Sumela Monastery (in Turkey, not Italy). I could swear I've seen that same complex of cliffside buildings playing a role as a palace or something in another kdrama, too.

I swear Kim nam gil is one of those actors i cant bear to watch because of how charismatic and sexy he is ❤️ Those gazes are just damn deadly. I really like him and lee da hee as a pairing and find their dynamic hilarious. How could i not love a spoiled chaebol heiress and tsundere male lead! (Crash landing im looking at you)

I expected the tone to be a lot darker and the directing to be less campier, based on the trailer, but the guitar riffs during the fight scenes made me snort a little. Nevertheless its still entertaining to watch.

I think this may be the role of cha eun woo’s that i like since hit the top. He’s finally smiling and showing some expressions and i cant deny he looks good in that priest robe.

All in all it was a pretty solid premiere and I’m looking forward to the development between Mi Ho and Van since im a sucker for them already.

Reading the recap, I'm surprised that there were a lot of funny scenes which I either did not notice or did notice and was unamused. I think it is my cue that this drama is not for me. Also, it kind of reminded me of "Bulgasal" with the flashbacks. On the bright side, I was impressed with Cha Eun Woo's scenes because I had dropped every single drama of his as a lead.

For these 2 episodes, I was feeling like each character was filming a different genre : comedy for LDH, dark fantasy for KNG and shonei manga for CEW. It was kinda weird.

For the acting, KNG was great, not sure for LDH and CEW yet. CEW is really handsome but he doesn't have this flirty/cool vibe his character was trying to sell.

I didn't know how much campiness would be in this drama! Omg....
I got into it after fully accepting this. The extra fancy fight scenes lol.

The show briefly touched on the background info before zipping through the heroine's situation. It was a little too fast, but meh, that's typical with this genre. I wonder if her chaebol-ness and issue with her aunt will have a bigger part in the story or if it was just a minor device in catapulting her to the island.

I like the humor we got so far. The contract scene between Mi Ho and Ban was funny. Kim Nam GIl & Lee Da Hee are a great match.

I've only seen Cha Eun Woo in a few roles, but he's so much more lively here as one of the commenters have mentioned.

I thought this drama was going to be more scary and/or bloody, but thankfully, it hasn't been too bad. Only the demons look scary and some of the backgrounds.

It was also nice to see Go Doo Shim after seeing her recently in Curtain Call. I thought her voice was familiar in the beginning narration.

Just watched the first two episodes and they were so much fun! Dark and campy in the best ways, and I'm liking the characters so far. Someone else mentioned Bulgasal (which I also just started!), but our trio is giving me slight The Guest flashbacks. But with way more humor, and I'm here for it.

Also suspecting the other boy is the one going around destroying the statues... In all their scenes, I kept thinking - couldn't they at least have given the poor kids some clean clothes? Beds to sleep in? Like if you're going to create these super powerful beings, maybe don't give them every reason to resent you... I wouldn't be at all surprised if one went villain.

As for the setting - Jeju Island with it's wild coastline and spooky forests and that weird fortress-y cliffside mansion? Love it!

the entire time i was watching this i only had one thought:

"...how did they chain up that large ass monster?"

anyways what in the stranger things/Demon Slayer was that?

I was lowkey highkey excited when they announced this cuz kim nam gil omg i love him. I did have PTSD from eun-woo's previous dramas but so far he's doing alright here, Im looking forward to seeing more of his character as the show progresses!

i LOVED how fast they progressed the story like it was really entertaining and poor girl the SECOND she touched down she was not given a break AT ALL (but the second she went off alone on the dark road was her literally asking to get killed)

gosh Im really praying the drama carries on well and doesn't take any sudden downward spiral id be so disappointed
