Love is for Suckers: Episodes 11-12

The feels are back this week but they come from places we might not have expected. As our leads laze along trying to figure out their feelings, the Kingdom of Love characters are starting to steal the show.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

The drama totally went there! I didn’t think it had the guts but Chef John and our webtoon artist Ji-wan are hitting it off big time and reigniting the feels that we know this show is good for. Back at Week 1, who would have imagined that we would be rooting for The Ramen Chef? The redemption arc is underway and I’m totally sold, and also soothed. There is something healing in the interactions between Ji-wan and Chef John (or “Joon” as we learn) as they open up to each other and become fully realized human beings on screen. I hate to say it, but they’re upstaging our leads.

Remember when we hated John Jang? He was an arrogant player not smart enough to turn off his mic before talking bad about his boss — who he was also dating. But now he’s coming to realize all these things about himself too. This week, he apologizes to Yeo-reum for how he treated her in the past. He sees she’s responsible and considerate and he’s now learning that these might be valuable traits — it’s not all about looks.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12 Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

The changes we see in Chef John are thanks to interactions he’s had on set with other cast members. The woman he thought he liked — for her looks and social status — turned out to be vapid and unable to eat the food he prepared for her. In turn, Ji-wan not only eats what he makes, she’s intelligent enough to converse about it. We see his attention start to slip from the superficial weather forecaster to the kind-hearted webtoon artist, especially as the latter begins to have some trouble on set.

This week, Ji-wan’s story of childhood sexual abuse gets aired when new footage of the story is filmed. Ji-wan had initially revealed her story to a cast member who turns out to be a seasoned manipulator. This fraudster brings up Ji-wan’s trauma again on camera, knowing it will be aired, and hoping to gain attention for himself through her. Ji-wan gains the sympathy of the rest of the cast, and Chef John in particular.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12 Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

When our chef gets a call that his mother was in a minor car accident, Ji-wan sees him leaving and asks if she can ride along, not knowing where he’s going. She feels trapped in the house and wants to get out for a while. They go together to his mother’s restaurant in a small beach town, where the three sit down around a table of his mother’s food. Ji-wan lights up with everything she tries and Chef John lights up just watching her eat.

Outside the restaurant, the two are alone again and John reveals that his real name is Joon. He changed it to sound well off. As they walk along the water, he wonders why she’s not surprised by this reveal, since everyone thinks he’s from a wealthy family in Gangnam. The truth is he was raised in a fishing village by a single mother, and all he ever wanted was to succeed.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

Ji-wan says he doesn’t look like a country boy — his face is too pretty. More compliments come as she tells him he takes after his mom in being a good cook, and he responds that she always says the prettiest things. She says she has to speak prettily since she doesn’t have a pretty face. He looks at her and says, “You do have a pretty face.” She’s surprised because no one has ever said that to her before. He continues looking at her and says that what happened to her as a child was not her fault. He wants her to know that. She tears up (my heart completely breaks) and he tries to lighten the mood by asking if she goes to school to learn how to speak so prettily.

This scene is just beautiful. It’s shot beautifully, with the sun behind them and the water reflecting, and it’s written and acted beautifully, as they slowly say what needs to be said with their faces full of pain. Last week I smiled all the way through their scene at the table when she eats his cooking. This week their interactions are really hitting me in the chest. Over just a couple of episodes, these two have become my favorites and my reason to watch.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

I suppose I should get around to discussing our leads now that I have that out of my system. When we left last week, it wasn’t clear if the rescue scene was real. Well, it was. Jae-hoon goes back to find Yeo-reum in the rain and carries her across a flooded area with knee-high water. To do this, he must leave Ji-yeon behind and break the red thread that physically connects them for their Kingdom of Love activities. Ji-yeon cries when he leaves, and continues to cry thereafter.

Jae-hoon learns that in online comments Ji-yeon is being ridiculed because she likes him more than he likes her. (Were they reading the comments in my weecaps?!) They’ve earned the nicknames “superior Jae-hoon” and “inferior Ji-yeon.” When the two go out on a date where the cameras are rolling and people are recognizing them, they hear themselves being called these names in real life.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

Jae-hoon wants to stop Ji-yeon from looking pitiful in the eyes of the public. With the camera on, he says he doesn’t like these nicknames and, from now on, he will be the one that likes her more. He’s made two bracelets out of the red thread that he broke, and puts one on each of their wrists. Off camera, Ji-yeon asks why he did it because it’s not true to how he feels. Jae-hoon says he doesn’t like people thinking she’s inferior because she’s not. He doesn’t want her to have to hear those things — which seems to make her swoon and reinforces her liking him.

While all this goes on, Yeo-reum mopes around the set watching Jae-hoon and Ji-yeon. We see her edit footage of the two of them laughing and getting to know each other, with a longing look on her face. The footage gives us a little more perspective on how Ji-yeon can still be pursuing Jae-hoon, though, because there are intimate moments we’re not seeing.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12 Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

When Yeo-reum finally sits down with Jae-hoon it seems they are going to have a heart to heart. He tells her he’ll listen if something is upsetting her, just like he always has. He talks to her about her career, saying he knows this isn’t the kind of show she wanted to make. (She does not, however, try to make amends in the same way and still has not mentioned what she learned about his father’s death last week.) Their conversation is cut short when Ji-yeon arrives.

In another moment, Jae-hoon tells Yeo-reum that her old apartment downstairs from his is still empty. She moved out when she was going to marry In-woo, but Jae-hoon got the lease, so she can move back in if she wants. Yeo-reum goes to look at the apartment and starts remembering all her times there with Jae-hoon. While she’s there, Jae-hoon comes to check on the place and finds her there, crying.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12 Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

She wants to know why he’s always so nice to her. He asks if she really needs him to answer that — why is she always confusing him about how she feels? She says she’s going crazy because her heart doesn’t listen to her mind. Her feelings are all over the place. She can’t figure out why she wants to date and fall in love again. Her heart is breaking because of him. Jae-hoon asks why she’s saying all this right now. And Yeo-reum answers that she wants to be with him.

At that, he crosses the room and hugs her. They kiss (and kiss and kiss) and then wind up in bed. It’s kind of steamy but also sweet because the familiarity between them is obvious. The scene delivers everything I would have wanted about four episodes ago, but for some reason I just can’t feel what I want to feel here. The only explanation we get from Yeo-reum about how she’s been acting is that her mind says no but her heart says yes. But I’m not totally clear why her mind says no.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

After such a successful setup, the show has taken us in some disappointing directions with the main characters. Ji-yeon, who was so likable early on — sweet but with a backbone — has become impossible to root for. Jae-hoon, who gave the swooniest confession I’ve heard this year, was then unable to handle the offer he made. In both cases, though, their juvenile behaviors are identifiable responses to rejection.

Then there’s Yeo-reum. I loved her at the outset because she was a little bit of a mess but she was relatable and just seemed like a good person who’d been through some bad times. Now she’s gone from very accessible late-30s problems to what seem like made-up obstacles. I was waiting for the moment when Yeo-reum’s mom reappeared because their scenes together always got to me. But this time I was dry-eyed as Yeo-reum cried to her mother because I no longer understand what she’s crying about.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 11-12

As a setup for next time, I should mention that there’s an extended and somewhat unnecessary scene this week where a guy with a knife comes onto the Kingdom of Love residential complex and causes some mayhem. While I think it went on for too long, it serves a couple of purposes. First, the cast member who’s been manipulating Ji-wan is outed as a true con artist. The knife guy is there to try to kill the con man because he swindled him out of all his money and ruined his life.

Second, we find out that Chae-ri knew the guy was a fraud and that’s precisely why she cast him: to stir up trouble. The knife incident is big and terrifying — Sang-woo gets slashed across the arm and Chae-ri shows signs of a possible violent trauma in her past, given her reaction to the event. Afterward, the higher-ups order the show to end early — meaning all the cast members will have to make their final picks for who they want to date by next week.

Now that Jae-hoon and Yeo-reum are apparently together, we’ll have to see how Ji-yeon handles the news, and I’m not looking forward to it. What I do want to see is Chef John make his pick for Ji-wan to the surprise of everybody.

I’m tired of Ji-yeon. Ep. 11 demonstrates once again how expertly she attributes responsibility for her own emotions and responses to others. It really is her genius. She startles JH by saying “my regeneration skills are better than you think” - in the context of the scrape on her arm, but obviously really meaning her crush and her determination to overlook any hurt or slight to obtain him. She’s human rubber cement and completely shameless.

The way Joon-ho hurls Ji-wan at Knife Guy while scrambling away himself! 🤬🤣 I saw the purpose of the knife attack as showing that Chae-ri’s approach to reality TV production is the same as Joon-ho’s to his investors/victims: take a chance on whatever you can get away with, gloss over the potential downsides, offload as much of the risk as possible onto others, and shrug off responsibility as “you signed up for this, that’s just the way it happened” if things go wrong. They both treat people as fools or game pieces and both seem genuinely to believe that as long as their unfortunate victims gave consent, however ill-informed or coerced, they have no moral culpability. They’re both sociopaths, but at least Chae-ri ultimately confronts Knife Guy and says she's in charge (which ties to JY’s earlier assertion that the staff’s role is to protect the cast), even if she’s still mocking his anguish and saying it’s his own fault. JH’s disgusted glance at CR after Knife Guy is subdued speaks for all of us. She’s a horrible person with a defective moral compass. I'm not looking forward to some phony redemption for either her or JY.

Also, three cheers for lovely Sun-woo telling Chae-ri he no longer wants to apologize to her after she airs the revelation of Ji-wan’s sexual abuse.

Image of the week: YR striding into the Kingdom looking badass (but also ridiculous) with her knee-high boots, past the armored statue holding a pointy weapon, to find a scene of real, not romanticized battle.

@dramaddictally, you're so right that the kiss is unsatisfying because it feels unearned for YR. We see lots of moments of her gazing moonily into a monitor at JH or staring at his retreating back, but there is neither the kind of clarifying discussion they need nor some other exposition of how she’s reassessed her relationship with him. I can’t see why he would be so ready to jump into kisses and bed with her when she finally says she wants to be with him. She’s held back too much for too long for that to be so easily overcome (unless of course he’s just being a typical guy leaping at the chance for sex, which would be out of character).

This is starting to look a little like Kiss Sixth Sense in that this episode feels like the end, we can pretty much guess what happens after this, and I’m probably going to wish I’d just stopped here - except for mild curiosity about what has stopped Yeo-reum from tackling JH straight into bed for so damned long.

I agree with your comments these two stood out for me:

‘The way Joon-ho hurls Ji-wan at Knife Guy while scrambling away himself!’ 👈 then has the cheek to go to her and try to get her on his side, he is beyond scum.

‘Also, three cheers for lovely Sun-woo telling Chae-ri he no longer wants to apologize to her after she airs the revelation of Ji-wan’s sexual abuse.’👈 one of my favourite lines in the whole episode and took me to when she was saying he was being used inappropriately when he was returning the wedding gifts to the staff and he told her in no uncertain terms that he would not do any non work related tasks for her.

@elinor: very nicely put. I tried not to have too many expectations of this show but am still a bit disappointed with how devoid of agency Jiyeon has become. Initially, at least she seemed to have a career and a sense of self but it has been subsumed by her attraction/longing for Jaehoon. Their interactions are sooo boring and devoid of any spark of intellectual or emotional connection that it is obvious she was never written as a possible romantic rival. I hate that she is more often than not either crying over him or looking at him longingly. It is just pitiful.
@dramaddictally; Completely agree with you re Jiwan and Chef John/Joon. They shone so brightly in the last episode. I hope the show-runners have the cultural and commercial courage to bring these two closer and at the very least enrich his redemptive arc by making him worthy of her friendship. She is such a gem of a character and the actor has blossomed in the role. I wish they hadn’t forced her to wear those dresses reminiscent of Jane Eyre leaving her orphanage in the 19th century but they went that route. Regardless, she has been a delight.

‘ I wish they hadn’t forced her to wear those dresses reminiscent of Jane Eyre leaving her orphanage in the 19th century’ 👈so so funny thank you.

I am currently listening to the audiobook of Anne of Green Gables and she bemoans her adoptive mum dressing her in sensible clothes. I think in the case Jiwan’s appearance makes perfect sense in terms of modesty and safety considering her history and will be reflected differently as her confidence is restored.

@reply1988: But even taking what you said into consideration, it is just ridiculously démodé and unflattering to her. They should have toned that down as it would have been nice not to rely on that trope so heavily.

I think even the characters who don’t have issues often wear clothes that make no sense, so I put it down to fashion PPL and pervy directors that want to show off the actresses bodies regardless of the weather or walking expectations.

3

I think we are heading towards a makeover that makes everyone's jaw drop - except for John Jang who already knows how pretty she is.

5

@kaddicted: You are on the money. Groan. She is lovely as she is but fashion wise, I hope they just give her some decent contemporary clothes and not doll her up so much it will undermine her character.

4

@DancingEmma - it could be dangerous I agree, especially if they dress her the same way as YR .... 😄

It's so much easier with the men isn't it? Get the hair out of their eyes and button them into a suit like Captain Ri in CLOY and long before him, Dal-po in Pinocchio, plus countless others in between.

I have faith in John Jang and have written into the script that he now sees with the eyes of a philosopher and will propose while she is still wearing her orphanage clothes. The makeover will actually be her wedding dress. The congregation will gasp in astonishment as she walks down the aisle and JJ will proudly smile as if to say, "well, of COURSE!!!"

8

@kaddicted: “I have faith in John Jang and have written into the script that he now sees with the eyes of a philosopher and will propose while she is still wearing her orphanage clothes”. This made me laugh!

4

Thank you both for summing up Ji Yeon’s character (and my frustration with her) so well. She’s a wasted opportunity, and it would have been so much better had she been a viable romantic rival. Having a simpering, pitiful, love-me-because-you-feel-sorry-for-me SFL is boring, annoying and disappointing.

I sort of like her clothes! There are a lot of faux-European-setting manhwas/webtoon out there (usually the normal run-of-the-mill FL dies in the modern world and gets soul-transplanted into a beautiful woman from faux-European kingdom) and her style is reminiscent of that.

Thank you for writing that about Chae ri. I felt I was in the minority thinking the same. I get that she's an interesting character and I tend to like grey characters but she skews more towards black than white or grey here. She has fundamentally exploitative and selfish concepts of using humans to her advantage. You put it so well. I'm not rooting for her, she's far too gone to get a redemptive arc. I used to think she's pretty competent but hers comes at the expense of others and keeping her benefit first at all cost no matter how much it affect others. Chae ri is likely to make another hit show, she'll probably also get promoted before Yeo Reum, maybe that makes her competent enough but she'll be getting that at the expense of many people.

Chef Joon and Ji-wan... are upstaging our leads.
I agree and give a Yes this statement. I'm rooting for them big time. I entirely love this two together. It will become perfected for LiFS if Chef John and Ji-wan are the two casts who are rumored to be married/real time dating by the end of KoL2.

I'm choosing to forget his name but dayum! He's a douchebag, a complete one.

I don't know if I should spank Jae-hoon in the head. He sure knows how to say two different things to Ji-yeon. One minute he's telling her with so much care about how much he wants to work towards loving her. The very next minute he's reminding her about their situation, she loves him more...bla bla bla, as if to rub it in her face. It would have been nice if Jae-hoon cleared the reason why he said those words after hearing what they are called, before he switched on the audio waist-pack and made an onscreen statement, that way Ji-yeon wouldn't see a glimmer if hope. Sincerely, I don't see how Ji-yeon hasn't crested an emotional distance in her heart and just play along for the story. Their situation isn't bad perse. It's not a bad thing nor do you lose points for liking someone first and then making the mistake/having the honesty to voice out your feelings when you're definitely sure the other person isn't feeling the same way. I don't know if she shot herself in the leg or I admire her boldness or it both, but I want Jae-hoon out of her head. It got really pitiful seeing Jae-hoon boost her confidence during the date and someway somehow hurt her pride the very next scene involving them both. She really needs to take a break. It's clearly affecting her and I fear her clutching to hope isn't doing her any good. It's just sending her into a continuous loop of high and lows.

With whatever was going on with the leads, it was John and Ji-wan that held my interest and I really love what Chef Joon is turning out to be. He apologizing to Yoo-reum told me that Ji-wan made am impression on him. I like him a lot and I like Ji-wan for the person that forced that sweet persona out.

JH is confusing me too. He says he will be sincere towards JY. then next episode he says he will love her more, Atleast in the show. Like he is helping her clear her image. I don’t get it. He clearly is leading her on. And that woman clearly knows she has no chance at real love with this guy (YR will never go away from his life as a friend and that will bother her always) but she still keeps clinging on to him.

I think JH is in a bit of a pickle. He’s agreed to be in this weird pretend I’m-interested-in-you relationship for onscreen purposes (at JY’s request to save her face), and I think that as part of that deal, he feels responsible for the derision JY is getting from the public. So the interesting thing is, when he says that from now on, he’ll like her more and gives her the bracelet, it’s like he’s figured out the whole reality TV game. He’s basically pulling (to a much milder and more harmless extent) the same move as they did on him when cameras turned up at his safe haven with the young man he’d saved. It’s a moment for the cameras that captures her genuine surprise and emotions in that moment. Later, he’s actually honest with her about how he feels about her (I think he refers to it as the temperature of his feelings for her, or something to that effect).

However, when he tells her (in the previous episode?) that he’ll sincerely try to get to know her, I think that is genuinely confusing. I saw it as him acknowledging her as a person and someone worthy of his attention. It’s just that we all know it’s not going to lead where JY wants it to lead.

I feel like a weird JH apologist now, but I don’t think he’s perfect or faultless by any means.😅 It’s just that I think it’s all a big mess, and at least he tries to take responsibility for his decisions around JY rather than seeing himself as a victim. When he responded to say that he didn’t regret agreeing to go on KoL2, I understood him and his motives a bit more (YR is his romantic end game, and he never gave up, despite her asking for him to be a friend). So his decisions around his relationship with Yeo Reum are another story!🤦🏻‍♀️

I don’t know if it’s the writing or my memory, I can’t really tell when he is playing the reality show character vs when he is being honest. And given JH, I don’t think she can tell the difference either.
Like that whole conversation about her not having to wear a mask anymore. She can be herself. I didn’t get that either. It didn’t really change anything.
I don’t hate JH, but I feel the way he handles JH is wrong. Even if he genuinely wants to try something with her, he should have known he can’t move on from a 15 year love in a span of weeks.

Also, He really doesn’t share his feelings or his thoughts. He is always trying to be there for someone. Trying to comfort. Trying to say the right things. It’s the same pattern with YR. he holds his feelings too close. And that’s why no one can be in a relationship with him.

I'm with you on the last paragraph. He's giving too much without allowing himself the benefit of receiving the same gift he gives out. That vulnerability he refuses to let out is something Yoo-reum has definitely seen and dealt with when she helped him come back into the world but she just sees enough Jae-hoon lets out. I'd want him to be freely vulnerable. He can be the perfect guy and friend who check all the boxes you mentioned in the prior paragraphs and equally vulnerable to the woman who he can't seem to move on from for 15 years now.

4

I think the writing certainly doesn’t help, and they’ve been toying with us as well, with all the fake-outs. And you’re right that it’s now really difficult to tell his true actions from those he’s just putting on for the show. Who knows how they manage to keep track themselves?!

That mask conversation was bizarre. The only “growth” Ji Yeon has been given as a character, it seems, is her ability to run, which surprised JH so much that it makes me wonder about his opinion of her.😅 How awesome would it have been had she also been a trained martial artist who disarmed the knife-wielding intruder? But I guess that’s probably a different show (and I also don’t need my FLs to know how to fight to think they’re strong - I’m just being silly…)

I think what we see in JH is what can happen with some very principled people - they’re so busy being good people that they forget to ask those they’re being good to about what they actually need and want. Worse even, they don’t listen when they’re told. And he’s definitely not opening up, which is and will continue to be an issue in all his close relationships.

@dramaddictally thank you for the weecaps
The truth is he was raised in a fishing village by a single mother, and all he ever wanted was to succeed.👈 This gave me Golden spoon vibes.

From the first time I saw the webtoon artist it reminded me of the drama Coffee, do me a favour. That was about a webtoon artist who is overweight and in love with her boss who treats her well while everyone else either ignores her as a woman or teases her due to her weight.

‘The scene delivers everything I would have wanted about four episodes ago, but for some reason I just can’t feel what I want to feel here.’ 👈 exactly. YR needs to say she felt something for JH since their first kiss days but was an idiot and lied because she didn’t know what he felt. When they became proper friends she definitely didn’t want to lose the friendship and when she fell in love with the fool she thought her feelings for JH were clearly not that deep if she was happy to marry someone else. When they broke up she didn’t know what she wanted and as none of the other relationships worked she didn’t want to risk checking out the depth of her feelings for JH that had grown considerably over the years through their supporting each other during their bad times. When the fool returned she remembered how they had been so happy together in version one so decided to go for version two believing those deeper feelings would return and thought that was the explanation for why she had not been able to fully connect with anyone since. Now version two is properly over she knew she needed time to work out why she had settled for basing a marriage on memories, and what she feels and is prepared to risk for JH. But, rather than say that she found herself lying again about her feelings when he told her he was prepared to be a friend placeholder until she was ready for the next stage. She initially decided it was better to make a hasty decision to stay as friends full stop rather than feel pressured to come to him. Watching him with Jiyeon let her know she really did love him and it was not lust which she had feared when her heart and body responded to the kiss they aired on The Kingdom set.

We then need to hear JH’s equally confused explanation for why he didn’t ask outright about the first kiss and confess then, why he didn’t admit his feelings when she was dating random guys and why he couldn’t give her the space he initially offered after the wedding fiasco when she clearly needed it. Once they have both talked it out then I will sign up 100% to long term successful wedded bliss confident they will be the happy solid couple and great well adjusted parents like her parents. They may benefit from therapy for their individual issues especially JH re his unresolved regrets about his dad.

What I do want to see is Chef John make his pick for Ji-wan to the surprise of everybody👈 I am also hoping they are in a serious relationship and she makes a webtoon about Kingdom of love two. The gap...

Between series end and the reunion marriage scene is not long enough for a relationship to become a viable marriage. I also don’t get why anyone who had been through the drama of the show would consider doing something serious on such a tacky show. Therefore, I am calling it now as miscellaneous man Janggoon and Taemi as they are the only two where it would make perfect sense for their characters. I am also happy to deal with the shame if they pull someone else out the bag.

I am confused how all the ex forces guys didn’t disarm the out of shape knife wielding man. Anyone else concerned why people were throwing petrol on the flames of a man prepared to die and take everyone with him? Also Sangwoo was bleeding and NO ONE was tending to him even though there was a doctor on the scene. I just want to log that PD Kang would have been dead if Sangwoo had not been brought back on set as he wasn’t supposed to be there.

Just looked the actor up playing Sangwoo and discovered he is 21 and an idol it also looks like this is his drama debut. I have noticed that Asian wiki doesn’t seem to log web dramas for some actors so he may have been in other dramas in the past. I think based on this performance if he is given the right roles he will do well.

Wow he is all over tv and with another drama coming he could do well. It’s competitive in his age range with so many youth focused web dramas and school/university storylines like Dear. M and A moment of 18 so it will be interesting to see. But if he is so active on tv and singing dramas will make him unavailable for significant periods

I was so surprised when JH and YR just started kissing and didn't explain anything. Which didn't give me hope that this was going to last. And didn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling I wanted.

I really am sold for Jonh ans Ji Wan scenes. Whenever their scenes come up now, i just watch them so much happiness. Their conversations are so sweet to watch. Hope they become a real couple in the Kingdom of Love.

As for Yoo reum and Jae Hoon, even though they finally got back together with all the kissing, I did feel happy about it, but I felt something missing. Like I was expecting it be so electrifying with so much passion, but maybe the scenes between them lately were so distant, and suddenly they were having this steamy scene really didnt match at all with thr pacing of the story. A bit disappointed with the way this reconciliation was brought up, the scenes played out because I have waited for this long , for them to be back together because they are perfect. I would have liked a long hug for that part and Jae Hoon consoling her.

Chae Ri has become a character i really dislike now. Even though earlier she was brazen enough and tolerated her for it , but she is way too stubborn. What a heartless character she is.

I am glad Chaeri’s boss over ruled her when he saw she will do whatever it takes for the ratings knowing that bring ads and when the company benefits financially, her career will blossom. He is aware that his use of YR to tame Chaeri’s collateral damage approach to people’s lives was not working and the companies reputation was at risk which has a significant impact on their finances.

Seriously for a show that had them both as Co-PD's, I find Yoo-reum relegated or relegating herself to Assistant PD capacity, except for when little moments like when she had to stand up for Sun-woo, or talk to Sun-woo about the authority, power and responsibility. I wish she had more spine, for someone who was supposed to be an empathetic beacon of balance to the show.

This episode also, i thought alteast Yoo Reum will strongly be on the opposite side of Chae Ri, even though for a millisecond she was against Chae ri telling her to not to the cross the line, the next minute she got shut by Chae Ri that she is ruining her dreams. That moment totally infuriated me and more because Yoo Reum just didnt bother to oppose it more firmly.

The two of them don’t work together, they work alongside one another - I think that’s the core problem. But I’m not sure Kang PD is capable of working well with others (or compromise), so every point of disagreement is an uphill battle. I have had colleagues like this and it is very hard to get anywhere with them because things end up escalating and spinning even more out of control very quickly.

Exactly. Chae-ri isn't learning, but I found her statement about the kind of show she would see Sun-woo produce as something. She isn't changing, but she is looking to see her Sun-woo fail and that counts as something because she would never have allowed it Sun-woo the platform to try and prove her wrong, especially not after he tanked his apology to her.

But Yoo-reum is just there. All her growth is found in her statements, and the only time I saw her learn from Chae-ri was the salty situation with the beach * Jae-hoon's safe space.
I'd love to see her grow properly. Just produce an ambitious show without the saltiness. Something a collab between her and Sun-woo + whatever craziness she gleans from Chae-ri, would birth with impressive ratings

And in Ep 14, you can see that Chae Ri will let the [SPOILER].

I so agree! I kept yelling at the screen for YR to just stand up to Chaeri. She’s there to keep her in check, but she’s never really had it out with her. She also has not made a plan to move kingdom 2 in a more positive direction.

What was that? I was just thinking about how the writers were going to make it believable in the remaining episodes that Yeo-reum is ready for a relationship with Jae-hoon and then - poof, suddenly she changes her mind without any comprehensible explanation.

I rather praise the pair of chef and webtoon author, who I'm enjoying a lot more at the moment. Chef John Jang has credible character development.

But at least there's hope now that things will be less gloomy going forward. Yeo-reum hopefolly now has one less reason to creep around melancholy.

The con artist was ridiculous; actually pushing Ji-hwan toward the guy with a knife. Ugh.
Our puppy Sang-woo got hurt and he did so protecting Chae-ri who he was clearly upset with. Kudos to him for standing up to Chae-ri and still being a gentleman and protecting her (though she didn't deserve to be protected, imo).
Can't stand Chae-ri. She caused these problems by bringing in the con artist and she had the nerve to blame Yeo-reum, claiming Yeo-reum ruined the show.

For someone used to wielding power, making quick decisions and taking charge, she was absolute crap in the knife invasion, standing frozen to the spot while Sang-woo defended her with a chair like a lion tamer at the circus. Chae-Ri is Chae-Ri but at least, she's trying to do her job. She didn't run away during the attack. She was there for her colleagues and the members even she was completely terrified.

It's really a weird show when you're more interested by supporting characters and not the main or second leads... But Ji-Wan and John were really cute together and so honest.

Chaeri was not dealing with the attacker appropriately for a person taking responsibility for the safety of others. She was being herself and aggravating the situation by giving him cold hard facts at a time when he was emotionally unstable and under the influence of alcohol, both of which had switched off his rational decision making; he had already hurt a team member with no remorse.

I couldn't care less for leads. I really dislike JH, the man who pushes and pushes the woman he used to call a friend to have sex with him when she said many times "I'm in no place for another relationship, I need a friend". Well, bad for YR, her friend finally got what he wanted, and I am not pretty sure she consented or was forced to. Anyway, I hope these two are unhappy ever after, I am done with them.

The only reason I will keep watching, if i keep watching, would be Chef Jang and JiWan. I love their arch, is wonderfully written and acted (in comparison with the leads one), even if JiWan is not a favourite character. I really don't like when writers push us to like a character at all costs, just because she is shy, fat and not pretty and she's never been loved before.

And contrary of many comments here, I L O V E PD Kang. She is a hard worker, gets the job done, knows how to do the job and gets results. So she knew Joonho was a fraud? And what? Does it make her responsible for the situation? No way! In fact she took care of it. Of course it had to be two men to save the day, but she is honest. I loved her conversation with YR, when she said "Don't you dare judge my innocent desire for wanting my program to succeed". I adored her when she said that: programs like that are consumed every day in TV channels all over the planet... are you telling me all PD Kangs in the world are bad people? That people watching those reality are bad people? No they are not.

Chae-ri's previous Kingdom show also got her network censured by government regulators and threatened with lawsuits by participants, got her physically attacked by a former participant, and got her called on the carpet by her boss and assigned a co-PD to rein her in because she can't be relied on to exercise even minimal discretion about what should and shouldn't be aired. For Kingdom 2, she coerced YR into bringing in JH by threatening to fire her whole team. Deliberately booking a con artist and a person with known mental illness for the expressed purpose of stirring up trouble shows her dedication to never learning anything. And all of this in the service of ratings for a 'reality' show that manages to be both sleazy and boring.

@eazal, I'm not picking a fight - really! 🤣 I liked Chae-ri at first but struggle to find anything positive in her now - but I've also struggled to see JH's actions in a more realistic/negative light because I find his character (and Siwon!) so appealing that I've made a lot of mental excuses for him. I'm also not saying that's what you're doing with Chae-ri, just that the disagreement is making me take stock of my biases. And I freely admit to despising dating shows. Are all PD Kangs bad people? No, but this one is. Are all people watching 'reality' shows bad people? Of course not! But most of those shows are garbage and not worth causing real harm to real humans. If LIfS were actually exploring that theme, both it and Kingdom of Love would have a lot more to say to me than they do right now.

It's safe to say Yeo-reum consented to having sex with Jae Hoon. Neither was intoxicated, she kissed him back, they left Yeo-Reum's apartment to go Jae-Hoon's apartment to have sex, and then there was the slowest unbuttoning of a shirt scene ever. Not once did Yeo-reum hesitate or express reluctance to intimacy with Yeo-reum. Jae-Hoon's also conduct indicates if Yeo-reum had hit the brakes, he would have stopped immediately. We have nothing to show otherwise.

In the context of that scene alone, it's completely clear that YR and JH both consent to kissing and heading to bed. I had my head turned around by @leetennant's blog post (linked on her fanwall) about JH's repeated pressure on YR and her resistance, though. Maybe the show is clumsily trying to say that "timing is everything" but what's coming across is "keep pushing through boundaries until you get what you want."

The kiss scene is also so gloomy and chilly-looking - the empty room with its dark paneling and colorless decor, JH's and YR's matching dull, neutral clothing, and the stark overhead lighting. It's such a contrast to their bright clothes and bright smiles in the flashbacks to happier times. What is the show trying to tell us about these two finally getting together?

I read @leetennant's blog post and agree with several of the points raised. For quite a few episodes now the word ‘manipulative’ floated through my mind as I watch this drama. Whether it was Yeo-Reum’s ex, Ji-Yeon or Jae-Hoon more recently. Really, production mocks itself throughout this drama. Just like Kang Chae Ri casted the ‘Kingdom of Love’ members according to tried-and-true archetypes, the writer and PD did the same for the characters overall. Stereotypical spunky candy female lead whose childhood love interest has the patience of Job while she deals with her fear of love. The interloper who means well and just really wants to be loved by the childhood love interest with eyes only for spunky candy female. Interloper will eventually briefly learn to love herself just long enough for rando third-party guy to sweep her off her feet. And there’s all the other supporting characters who are more interesting because the writer knows she doesn’t have to invest a ton in them (i.e., what we see, and like, in John Jang and Ji Wan’s relationship). The thing is, in a slice-of-life, no one character is wholly meant to be bad or manipulative. In this genre, the audience should be able to see trace amounts of themselves in every character. Here, the writer forgets this rule and keeps forcing each character into a preconceived narrative. It’s Mad-Libs: K-Drama Edition. Yeo-Reum and Jae-Hoon are the foregone conclusion. The audience already knows and expects the OTP to be together, it’s why we’re here. Why production won’t let the audience float down a lazy river instead of this raging white rapid comes down to the ability to write a cohesive story, or the lack thereof.

4

I do agree that Chef Joon and Ji Wan have upstaged the lead OTP big time. I am rooting for them to work things out for real.

I am disenchanted with both Jae Hoon and Yeo Reum for various reasons. Even if they ended up in bed at the end of the episode, I did not feel anything but meh. Both of them have a lot more talking to do and issues to deal with if they want to make it work. I am not sure I want to sit through that anymore.

I liked Chae Ri at the beginning because I found her interesting but as we get to know her more we see her faults big time. Her lack of moral compass makes her difficult to root for. Yes she gets great ratings for her show but its to the expense of others. I can't believe she got the swindler on the show knowing he is trouble.

As for Ji Yeon, I just wish she stop pursuing Jae Hoon now. He does not deserve her attention. There are better guys out there for her. Jae Hoon is just leading her on at this point despite the previous permission she gave to use her in the show. She must know when to stop and preserve her dignity.

I do not like Joon Ho the conman and want him to be outed as a horrible person on the show. At least that way, he will not be able to con more people once KOL ends. I can't believe he shoved Ji Wan to his attacker then turn around to plead with her once the incident ended. And that is after he outed JW's painful past for his own gain. He is the reason Ji Wan felt suffocated on set.

I want to see more scenes between Chef John and Ji Wan. I want him to choose her over vapid Tae Mi in the final pick. They are the only bright spot on the show for me now.

I thought Chae-ri was an intriguing character at first, but the more we see, the deeper her moral rot appears to be and there’s no backstory so far that could provide insight or any reason to maintain some sympathy and interest. She defends herself not by justifying her (unjustifiable) actions but by attacking YR’s vulnerabilities:

“Don’t you dare judge or look down on my pure aspiration to succeed at all costs.”
‘At all costs’ = as long as those costs are paid by other people. No. HELL NO. That’s a completely appropriate subject for judgement and disdain. There’s nothing pure about it.

“You sure have a talent for causing every show you touch to fail. I refuse to get sucked into the curse that you bring with you.”
This is projection in the service of gaslighting. Chae-ri fails at basic humanity, and that’s why Kingdom 2 is in trouble. She’s utterly indifferent to any consideration for others and places the utmost priority on ratings no matter the human cost. She’s the curse. I just wish YR had the backbone and presence of mind to call her on it.

That last para. That’s when I lost any respect I had for Chae Ri. I didn’t like that she was good at her job(while the kind of show she makes itself is questionable but that’s for another day). But this was unprofessional and uncalled for. It was a personal attack.
The moment something goes wrong she points finger. When something goes right she claims credit.
And to think YR didn’t fight her or call out her BS makes me think YR has had no character growth. She continues to suffer in her own pity party and will continue to do so.

What *was* that crap about Yeo-reum being "cursed?" I've never liked Chae-ri and she's done many despicable things. But this line really took the cake for me. She absolved the crooked investor of any responsibility in the knife attack episode (even though his very real actions had equally real consequences), but Yeo-reum is to blame because she's supposedly cursed (curses don't exist!)? That's an absurd and, as you said, deeply selfish accusation.

What I wanted, in lieu of a kiss scene, was for Yeo Reum and Jae Hoon to have a proper conversation. This reconciliation romance or whatever it is, is bizarre to me and I just felt sad for them both. Hopefully they’ve just gone about things in a different order than I would have liked, and the relationship repair work will start soon.

Recognition where it’s due - @gremlich was right!!🥳 Yeo Reum realised her feelings for JH via a series of flashbacks that allowed her to see that she had loved him all along (and also after feeling shaken/jealous when his attention and care weren’t on her anymore). Can I just say how much I hate this frame for friends-to-lovers? There are many reasons friends don’t always make good romantic partners (apart from whether attraction is present), and I am yet to be convinced that YR and JH will be able to make that transition if they don’t communicate.

On a happier note, I really like Ji Wan too, and I loved the phone call she had with Sang Woo when she realised he wasn’t on set anymore. I also like @reply1988’s suggestion of her finding love with Sang Woo’s older brother or something!😅 But Chef Jang is who’s around, and they’re making him more likeable. I’m not fully convinced yet that he’s good enough for her, though!

Ji Wan’s presence makes it very obvious how ridiculous the size standards are, and how anyone larger than model-thin is often typecast in dramas. It’s also interesting that they’ve made her love of food one of her shining qualities - I’m waiting to see if and how they explore this. Will they make her thinner after a time jump of dieting and better mental health (I hope not), but if they don’t, will we actually see her being accepted and viewed as attractive as she is? The show hasn’t done anything with the eating disorder arc yet, so I’m not hopeful, and I know I can’t expect the show to address everything, but I’ve always felt that there’s a huge elephant in the room. We often have very thin characters of both sexes eating and drinking to excess onscreen, and it is viewed as charming, but how on earth is that actually possible most of the time? At least a character having an eating disorder is more reflective of what happens in real life, given the pressures that these characters face to look a certain way. (Except we all just call it dieting most of the time…😞)

I was a little disappointed in how they handled her eating disorder. I was also surprised how Chae Ri didn’t use it for her show.
I expected to see some empathy from John after seeing this. But I guess he just sees her as shallow.

Regarding Ji-Wan. I don’t think the show shows her as a big eater who seeks food or finds comfort only in food. It’s more like she appreciates good food. A foodie. I don’t even think she is heavy or overweight. As someone who had been stuck at home writing novels, all she needs is a little outdoor activity for her own health. Let’s hope the show doesn’t do anything stupid.

That is so true - they’ve played Tae Mi’s eating disorder as an annoyance rather than an issue that deserves sympathy (perhaps because her character is shown as being quite opportunistic, and we don’t see much vulnerability to her apart from the eating disorder).

It’s exactly this dynamic that I think could do with so much more exploration - as a society, we hold up these beauty standards, but at best, we accept and turn a blind eye to how we actually attain them, and at worst, we find the lengths we go to a nuisance or a character flaw.

I completely agree - I don’t think Ji Wan overeats or is overweight either. (In fact, she’s shown to eat less than most FLs on dramas. For example, I would not put down a delicious macaron that I’ve taken two bites of - it’s not like they’re the size of muffins!) I only refer to her dieting and mental health because she herself mentions it when she first reveals her history of being sexually assaulted/abused to app developer guy. I may have misremembered, but I recall it being framed as her weight being a byproduct of her trauma and I think she said that she was going to go on a diet after the show. I wish it had been more along the lines of: she’s stepped out of her comfort zone and it’s helped her realise how much stronger she is than she had given herself credit for, that she wants to treat herself better from now on, and not bypass opportunities, etc. I live in hope that the show does this justice…but I’ll just rewrite it in my own head if not.😅

These words struck me. As soon as I read them I thought it's more likely another mistake in the long line of mistakes they've made with each other over the years. They do everything wrong, they time everything wrong, they turn a blind eye at the wrong time, he confessed to her at the wrong time and maybe now she's done the same. They talk at each other instead of to each other, and I feel she is just filling a void in her life after Chef Jang dumped her and she walked out on her wedding. There is no new man on the horizon so she is predictably looping back to JH at a time when he appears to be trying to move on. Her ex-fiance's antics held a mirror up to her own face (she is just as bad at not facing up to things and letting them drag on until some unspecified time in the future) but apparently she didn't note the resemblance.

I agree with many of the other comments made - they need to talk to each other, wrangle the deep-rooted problem they have of going round in circles and not communicating. A tumble in bed might have felt great but it's not going to fix anything, especially if it is then added to the burden of complications they are forever carrying around.

I think you’re right - that fits their unfortunate pattern, doesn’t it? If they don’t address all of those missteps and course correct, they will definitely be better off as friends.

I’ve said this before but I think it would be so interesting for a show to explore friendships between close friends who don’t end up in a romantic relationship. In YR and JH’s case, it seems they’ve become each other’s primary person to the extent that any introduction of a partner for either of them would spell the relegation of their friendship, and they would no longer be able to be there for each other in the same way. I think this kind of dynamic puts undue pressure on the friendship to turn romantic, and it would therefore be hard to untangle what feelings are behind the desire to be together romantically. I don’t envy them, to be honest!

☺️ tee hee, I was thinking, does “Ji Yeon” in Korean translate to “whine/cry”?

Yeo-reum is not my favorite character, and it’s hard for me to cheer for a rebound as an OTP, but oh well. I just hope Jae-hoon figures out how to deal with the loss of his father in a more healthy way by the end of this, and I’ll be satisfied.

I CANNOT believe Joon-ho shoved Ji-wan toward the knife guy! I mean I can because he’s terrible, but still – why haven’t they addressed this? I can understand the other characters not noticing because they were understandably focused on the drunk man wielding the knife, but Ji-wan surely noticed what he did to her? I’m glad she’s at least seeming to distance herself from him, but ooph, he is just an absolute waste of space.

Especially in the absence of almost any Dae-sik and Hye-jin, Ji-wan and John (Jun) were my favorite thing this week. Thanks for focusing so much of the weecap on them @dramaddictally! They are what I want to remember from these episodes anyway. It feels like it’s the first time John Jang has had a real interaction with anyone in a long time. And he’s come such a long way in this drama so far! I have gone from absolutely despising him in the first week to him being a favorite now, which is no small feat! I loved his apology to Yeo-reum and his hesitancy to play Tae-mi’s game, but mostly I loved every little time he looked over at Ji-wan or said something nice to her, or took her to see his mom.

It's actually a very realistic thing for her to cling to the idea of him - who has shown her so much affection (even if we all know it is false) which she has deluded herself with. Women with low self esteem will cling to affection and turn a blind eye to flaws in people who show them love, that is a fact. She has been kind of doing this all along. She is not stupid, but she cannot give up on feeling like he likes her, even if she knows deep inside that it isn't real or healthy. Now that Chef John has begun to show genuine affection for her, she can release her hopes with Scammer and lean into the warmer, healthier relationship with Chef. She will probably always feel inferior to him, such is sadly the nature of low self esteem; but at least he is patient and caring with her and seems to have a genuine affection for her without any ulterior motives.

By stalling the central romance for too long, this show now has a hard job reclaiming my attention for the main pair and extended flashbacks to happier times leave me cold. It's dead, dude, and just has me pressing FF to pick up other happenings. Some comments last week touched on how they couldn't see a reconciliation and after ep 11 nor could I, and to be honest I find harking back to their relationship a distraction and annoyance when I'd far rather watch the magnificent Ji-Wan and John Jang getting to know and appreciate each other.

Let's face it, a budding relationship of the unlikely kind is far more interesting than one apparently going nowhere. When Ji-wan ran to JJ's car and asked if he would take her along (and he didn't consider it for too long before saying yes) that was more exciting than the knifeman turning up the night before, especially when we discover JJ's humble beginnings and realise in just that few seconds, he knew he could take JW there and she wouldn't judge him. Not to mention how she showed no hesitation in approaching our aloof and handsome chef as an equal and not a squealing fan. That's how comfortable they are with each other.

As for YR and JH, more boredom with her sitting on benches eating ice cream, wandering in her old empty house and feeling sorry for herself, with him doing the equivalent wandering the streets and tying himself even tighter to JY, even though he doesn't want her and has made that plain. This fiasco has now reached the point of cruelty with JH holding on to her in order to punish himself for still liking YR, who until her belated confession did everything she could to avoid their uncomfortable relationship. Up to this point they were both behaving like stubborn children and rightly being eclipsed by contestants in the show within a show. So now we finally have the confession but it's too late for me. I'm bored with both of them, so good luck reeling me back in.

I will bet money that most of us are far more interested in JW and JJ, until the end of ep 12 the only two characters moving smoothly forward instead of being stuck in a resentful rut. I hope they win KOL and get married, with Sang-woo directing to show Chae-ri exactly what kind of show he intends to make. That's the kind of academy I went to, the kind that taught me not to "speak prettily", but to let JJ go to a good woman, even though I'm now officially in love with him myself.

It's sort of funny how Chae-ri was trying to manipulate "exciting" things to happen, but the most exciting thing - JW and JJ- is happening in front of her without her prompting (the spark happened before the haunted school pairings) but she can't see it.

👆This is so true she didn't want Jiwan in the show, then she was happy to have her as the odd one out, then she was happy to portray her as the victim but now she is shining she is hidden in plain sight. Chaeri can only see the dark in people and situations.

She is prejudiced. She is scripting the show and in her script JH and JY are the star couple. And sadly they suck. Lol. Wonder how the viewer rating for the show is?
If she could let people be, there would be more interesting things to see.

I think it's really hard to write a show like Coffee Prince, Because This Life is My First, Our Beloved Summer, the Reply series or any other simple straightforward slice-of-life. Making simple look easy takes a skilled hand. This writer is on the right path, but isn't there quite yet. The assignment for Love is for Suckers seems to have gotten away from the writer, and now the entire drama rests in the actors' hands. To me, what really doesn't help though is the writer/PD's self-depreciating attitude towards K-Hollywood. The writer writes as if she's making a commentary on the industry, but instead it comes across as if she hates her job.

i just came on here to say that watching siwon and dahee on My little old boy is way cuter than whatever's happening to the plot of this drama. :/

They were adorable and made me wonder how much of Siwon himself is in his LIfS character - "what kind of people have you been hanging out with?"

Ji Wan and Chef John/Joon are the best surprise/twist in this drama so far, and I'm literally conductor of this love train moving full steam ahead, lol.

I also felt the first scene where he gives her the shoes showed their great chemistry (and I wasn't sure when that scene even happened - I presume before the show started) but that wasn't displayed when they got back together. And that sneaker scene also showed what we've been missing the last few episodes with all the miscommunication and mess.

I'm mad at this show. No. I think I hate it.

1. I think the show is trying to make us hate Chae Ri, dating shows, what the whole thing represents or wtv, but the only person that annoys me is the writer of the drama.
We needed to see Chae Ri disclose on national television Ji Wan's painful past? nope. We were done with that. What was the point of Sang Woo deleting the file? to see Yeo Reum and Jae Hoon kiss?
I really don't understand what was the point of that.

Same thing with the the con artist. I mean, we knew the guy was trash. They really needed to bring a guy to try to kill him? Why didn't they focus on what he did to Ji Wan?

2. Are they going to use a woman with a mental disorder to go all "psycho" or "crazy" because some guys didn't choose her as their date in a reality show?

3. What's the purpose of Kingdom of Love, or the side characters?
Besides Chef Joon and Ji Wan, the rest of the cast feels like the characters of "W" when they froze in time everytime Kang Cheol went to the real world. They have no development, storylines, meaning...

4. The leads... LOL.
Well, I guess now we won't see Jae Hoon's sleepy face and fake smiles or Yeo Reum's eyes full of water in a while. That's a good thing.
But the way they barely had scenes together these last episodes and they just got together after their first pseudo-real-conversation... LOL.

I love how all the good flashbacks, with real romcom vibes, are a bunch of scenes we've never seen before. I literally have no good memories of this couple.

This show could've used the best tropes out there (cohabitation/neighbors, friends to lovers, etc) and give us a nice drama. This could've been the next Fight for My Way, but nope. Nothing happened. They made her move out (no neighbors), and maybe they were never friends? (I'm not sure if they were really friends or if JH was good to her because he always liked her). Even the besties... Nope, I'm done. Such wasted potential.

Your first point is one of my major gripes with the storytelling. Ji-wan’s past has always been a plot device.

1) Episode 11 was really, really HARD for me. Like I might violate my personal drama watching rules and drop this show, hard.
2) Yeo-reum sees herself as the reason why all her relationships fail. She said, or eluded to, that in an earlier episode.
3) Even with them sleeping together, I don't think we're off the Yeo-reum/Jae Hoon merry-go-round just yet. Jae Hoon's still a cast member so they can't go public. Also, because of #2 above, I believe Yeo-reum's going to pump the breaks hard. And Jae Hoon won't want go public because he's trying to help Ji-Yeon save face.

Were the producers of Love is For Suckers told to wrap up the show like Yeo-reum and Chae-ri in Kingdom of Love, because what is happening. I am getting more and more frustrated with the show. I agree with you that where they've gone with Ji-yeon is infuriating. She is always crying! Or is she the sucker the title alludes to. Yeo-reum too! I thought Jae-hoon asking her if this is the show she wanted to make would be a wake up call to get her mind back in the game, and not just make half-hearted comments at Chae-ri. Argh.
