Kim Dong-wook might Run Into You in new KBS fantasy
by missvictrix
While KBS has changed the English title for You, Whom I Met By Chance to the beyond vanilla Run Into You, I’m still hopeful that this time travel fantasy will fulfill all of my time travel drama requirements: i.e., please be good. Though the premiere date is still pending, KBS has been dropping character stills like crazy. Stills are nice, and so are really fun teasers, but I’m already ready to see more of this drama, and how it deals with all of its potential time travel hijinks.
Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) and Jin Ki-joo (Showtime Begins) star as our time travelers — they shoot back to the strangely popular year of 1987 (seriously, dramaland, what’s up?) for different reasons. New anchor Yoon Hae-joon (Kim Dong-wook) is trying to solve an old serial murder case — for what else does a hero do these days? — and Baek Yoon-young (Jin Ki-joo) is trying to stop her parents from marrying. Okay, that’s a little more interesting, and creates lots of fun possibilities.
Back in ye olde 1987, we have a younger cast, with Seo Ji-hye (who was so much fun in Love All Play) playing our heroine’s mother, and rookie Lee Won-jung (who had a guest role in Extraordinary Attorney Woo) ostensibly as her love interest.
While I’m curious to learn more about our heroine’s purpose to destroy her past, I’m actually more curious about the mechanics of the story — do they really travel back in time with a car? Is there a flux capacitor involved? Why does present-day Jin Ji-koo look even more ’80s than her mother? These are things I need to know.
Directed by PD Kang Soo-yeon (Tale of Nokdu, Ghost Detective) and PD Lee Woong-hee, and written by by Baek So-yeon (Tale of Nokdu), Run Into You is slated to broadcast January 2023 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.

@missvictrix, thanks for this funny write up!😆
Now I want to know why 1987? as well. I can offer some info, that Korea was gearing up for the 1988 Olympics which was seen as their great leap onto the world stage (after suffering decades as a destitute third world autocracy after the War). They had successfully finished the 1986 Asian Games which had been regarded as a “practice Olympics”. Everything was go-go, build-build, spend-spend and party-party. I wonder if that has anything to do with the interest in that year.

Dramas really love to make their English titles so much more boring!
Looking forward to this 💖

Call me a killjoy, but I am English and I absolutely hate long clumsy and clunky titles. 'You, Whom I Met by Chance' is right up there and to be honest would make me think twice about watching it. 'Run Into You' is not only short and snappy, it is also ambiguous because just maybe one character runs another down with the car ... 😄. It would make me wonder enough to take a second look anyway. I just think these long ponderous titles are more cringy than clever.

I find long, somewhat poetic drama titles to be distinctly Korean, and think it’s part of the joy of watching K-dramas.

Heh, "beyond vanilla." It really does lack the magic of the former one. I like both leads, so I might give this a watch. I just hope it doesn't suck.

1987 is an important year for the democracy in Korea. There was a big democratic movement after the death by torture of a student. Because they were hosting the Olymprics in 1988, they had a big pressure to handle things.
I'm not sure about the story but I really like both actors!

@missvictrix You really have a way with words and I love reading them, all of them! Thanks for that write up! I really want to know the answers too. Guess we have to watch to find out if they are answered.

That new title is so dull I’ve already forgotten it, but the show looks promising. Is this the second or third time Kim Dong-wook has played a news anchor? That's a weirdly specific job in which to be typecast.
If I could travel back in time to interfere with my parents, I wouldn't stop them getting married but I'd have words to say about the rapid-fire way they inflicted four younger siblings on me.

Completely agree about the siblings. I only got one but was told by my mother many years later that the 4 year old me announced that if I had to have one I wanted a brother. "If it's a girl I'm going to kill it", I apparently said. Well I did get a sister but am pleased to report she's still very much alive ("She, To Whom I showed Enormous Restraint" ... 😆😆😆😍😈

That could be a terrific drama title, but it also sounds like the first line of a poem ... or an epitaph! 😂

There's still time for it to be an epitaph. 😎
