Cheer Up: Episode 9

Only one episode this week but it delivers all the pep and shine we’ve been missing. Our tight-knit team hits a misstep and almost misses their debut stage but hard-earned cheer skills help them pull through. To balance out all the light we get a little darkness as well, when the creepy culprit who’s been following our team finally comes forward.

EPISODE 9 WEECAP

Cheer Up Episode 9

As we enter Episode 9 we find our favorite cheer team in festival mode. They’ve been practicing their new routine for a month and excitement is in the air. Unfortunately, on the day of their debut, the team learns the show can’t go on. Their dance song can’t be played at the event due to a drunk driving scandal by the song’s creator. Though it’s a disappointment, the Freshman Five find a backup song and modify their moves. With new lyrics and renewed verve, they aim to perform as planned.

As they get everything prepared, Sun-ja puts on Jung-woo’s captain uniform, just to mess around, and rips a huge hole under the arm. When she learns the uniform is worth $5,000 — or the cost of 5,000 cream buns, as Hae-yi notes — she freaks out and tries to repair it before Jung-woo finds out. With her shoddy sewing job, however, the jacket rips again later while Jung-woo is wearing it on stage. In a rockstar move, he takes off the torn coat and tosses it in the crowd, leaving the newbies nothing to worry about.

Cheer Up Episode 9

As the freshman are gearing up for the show, Yoo-min is on the mystery case. She learns that the culprit of both the falling stage light and the threatening messages is likely a member of the cheer squad. The person texts her, telling her to meet at 4PM at the university’s observatory. Jung-woo says he’ll be on the lookout for anyone leaving at 4 but, in the end, he decides to join Yoo-min in case there’s any trouble.

As Yoo-min and Jung-woo wait in front of the observatory, a guy walks up and delivers a letter — supposedly on behalf of the texter — that reads: “What could Do Hae-yi be doing now?” Jung-woo and Yoo-min realize that rather than a meeting, they’ve been led away from the team. They both run to find Hae-yi.

Cheer Up Episode 9

In that moment, Hae-yi is with her ex, who’s in the band, asking him to rearrange the performance song so the team can dance to it. When Jung-woo finally locates her she can’t tell him what she’s doing since the freshman haven’t told the captains yet of their save-the-day plan. Jung-woo, instead of saying he’s worried, says he’s disappointed in Hae-yi’s lack of responsibility for the team. Why does she go off alone and not answer her phone? Hae-yi doesn’t say anything, even though taking responsibility is exactly what she’s trying to do.

When the newbies’ plan gets approved, all five of them get to perform in their stage uniforms together for the first time. The new routine is fun and high-energy and we finally get to see it in full. The festival is an all-day event but by night, Jung-woo takes the mic in front of the packed stadium and tells the person who is sending the texts to stop acting like a coward and come forward. It doesn’t lead to immediate results, but at least they’ve finally gone public with the problem.

Cheer Up Episode 9 Cheer Up Episode 9

In the middle of all the cheering and mystery solving, we still have our love lines. Episode 8 ended with Hae-yi and Sun-ho hugging on stage as Sun-ho cried. In this episode we learn that someone took a photo of that moment and posted it online, making everyone in school think the two are dating.

When the team finishes their performance, they bask in the glow of their success and stand with the crowd in the stadium. Min-jae looks at Sun-ja with a clear crush and Sun-ho officially confesses to Hae-yi. It’s his first time telling someone he likes them, rather than just asking them out. He says it’s scary, but he’s ready to accept his first unrequited loved.

We later learn in the epilogue that Jung-woo also “confessed” to Hae-yi earlier in the day — but it was while she was sleeping in the practice room. As he’s walking away, she wakes up, pretends she wasn’t sleeping, and tells Jung-woo not to be weird around her. She did have feelings for him, but she understands he doesn’t feel that way, so he should just act normal. Jung-woo seems a little upset, and I wonder how long this miscommunication can go on.

Cheer Up Episode 9

We finally meet Jung-woo’s mom in this episode but it still doesn’t shed a ton of light on his backstory yet. His mom shows up at the university and is angry to learn that he’s on the cheer squad — and captain no less. She says she’s leaving but we later see that she actually stuck around to see Jung-woo perform. She murmurs to herself that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, hinting at why she’s so angry about him cheering. (Man, I really hope there is no crazy reason having to do with cheerleading accidents to explain why his dad’s not around.)

On the mom front, we get very little from Chun-yang and Jin-hee here, but what we do get is precious. Chun-yang and Jae-yi go to Yonhee to support Hae-yi’s big day, and mom and bro are exuberant fans (even if Jae-yi is yawning by the time the thing drags into night). Jin-hee arrives alone to see Sun-ho perform and is just as proud. Both moms tear up at the sight of their kids on stage.

Cheer Up Episode 9

When the festival is finally over, Jung-woo finds a message in the dressing room to come to the observatory — no date or time listed but he runs off anyway. In the dark. Alone. When he arrives he doesn’t see anyone there. We see, standing on the observatory above Jung-woo’s head, the guy who delivered the letter to Yoo-min earlier — and he’s holding a knife.

We then see a montage of him executing all the misdeeds up to this point — the texting, the light falling, the spying, etc. He’s one of the cheer team sunbaes from the prior year who attends all the team events, but we’ve only seen him as part of a larger group. Since this isn’t a character we’ve met yet, we’ll have to wait for the coming episodes to understand his motives.

Cheer Up Episode 9

It’s been a while since we actually got to see the cheerleaders cheering so that was definitely the highlight of this episode. It’s so nice to watch the team finally working together. Now that they’re a small group, we get to see how individual personalities play out in the group dynamic, allowing everyone to have their own role rather than feeling like side characters.

The other highlight for me, even though it was small, was the moms being in the stands to support their kids. They looked totally out of place and so totally proud. With only one episode this week it feels like a lot of information is missing, but that’s also all the more reason to tune in next week to see how things play out.

Didn’t realize we get only one episode this week.

Finally! We see them perform. I really felt the energy of the stadium. It was nice to see them all out there enjoying it and giving it their all.
And was sweet that the moms and bro got to be part of the audience.

This love triangle seems a bit tiring at this point. I hope we get more about Jung Woo’s story. And resolve this cray cray guy issue next week.

Although I don't really care about the crazy knife guy and why he's got beef, I have to admit that they did a really good job of having him on screen but making him completely missable. When they did the quick montage of all the times he's been in the background, up to stuff, I was surprised that he's been there so much. But they HAVE to have a good reason for his actions.

And although Jungwoo is so horribly slow to express anything about how he feels - and knows it and regrets it - I still kind of think he's being pretty consistent. He wouldn't suddenly break out in a confession. It's going to be teased out of him by Haeyi in the end, but it's going to be all the more precious for it. Hoping that the drama gets it absolutely right cos it could be a major squee moment!

The highs for me were the freshmen debut on stage with their own individual costumes no less. Plus the Moms (and Jae Yi) in the stands cheering for their children.

Not sure if Jung Woo's Mom is happy or not but she must've accepted it at some point to [SPOILER].

I am tired of the love triangle and they've dragged it long enough. Its not much a triangle though if Hae Yi already explicitly shown preference for the captain. With three episodes left, Jung Woo's real confession to an awake Hae Yi should be worthy of the wait.

I am glad the mystery is over and they reveal the identity of the culprit. The fact that he has been near them along is terrifying. I am not interested in his reasons and just want him caught. What I want is to know more about Jung Woo and for him to finally confess to Hae Yi.

Omg I think its because the dramas I was watching was less than 16 episodes lately - Gaus and ODL. Now it got me thinking, what are they gonna fill the 7 episodes with?!

@dramaddictally thank you for this week weecap. The observatory was an interesting use of PPL. The only other buildings they use regularly in a range of dramas because they are picturesque are The Namsan Tower and a light house at the end of a stone walkway, not sure this worked in the same way! Why would anyone run off on their own to an out of the way place to meet a person they know intentionally tried to kill two people? I am hoping broadcasting team rogue trying to make good is on the case and will capture the key evidence on camera and save the day. It would also be good to have a team chase scene in their cheerleading outfits. We are more likely to have a crying confession scene at the hospital.

Talking of crying scenes, finally, Minjae’s tears show that he is in the cheer squad for important reasons. The way he looked to the stands I wondered if a sibling/significant other had died and he was on stage representing their dream hence him being rubbish but determined to succeed. I do hate the way they make someone really bad and then give a ta da sad story reveal and expect that to be enough for us to forgive and forget their previous terrible behaviour.
This was one of the better episodes, I think the drama has found it’s feet and I am hoping this means we are going to have a decent ending with properly resolved storylines. The right twin will get the man and the one who misses out will feel regret as she will see how sweet he really is and the depth of his commitment to the one he loves.

I doubt that Yonsei University needs PPL when every student already wants to go to SKY. I'm sure mystery dude chose the observatory because Jung-woo is an astrophysics major.

Min-jae still hasn't been redeemed for me, so I'm bitter that he'll get Sun-ja as a consolation prize.

That’s a good point is the observatory on their campus?

Yes, behind the outdoor theater, which was why Jung-woo ran through the crowd leaving the festival. https://obs.yonsei.ac.kr/yonsei_obs/index.do

Thank you, it seemed to be off campus when we saw him looking up at it hence my thinking it was a public venue. How rich must a university be to have something of that scale on-site. Like you said it is one of the SKY universities so money is no object.

Sun-ho's confession was love. With Jukjae singing "Do you want to walk with me?" and the crowd waving flashlights, it was beautiful. Hae-yi was sweet when she tried to reassure Sun-ho that it was okay to cry, but he avoided her touch. I was shocked when Cho-hee said that freshmen should date each other because doesn't their team have a no dating rule?

Hae-yi has the best chemistry with Jae-hyuk. Their bickering was cute and funny how the music cut off every time she rushed him. "Should I not do it?" I just hope that they can stay friends.

I squeed when Mom asked Jae-yi, "Why don't you have any childlike innocence?" I still don't forgive Hae-yi for slapping Jae-yi or Mom for making him apologize, but how cute was he waving to his noona?

Aww at both moms tearing up. How did Jung-woo's mom get a ticket to the festival? I laughed out loud when the freshmen ignored Jung-woo's hand to do their own high five.

I don't care about the mystery, so I don't care who this guy is or what is his motivation, but his reveal was a great cliffhanger, so I'm glad that we only got one episode this week. I appreciate your weecap, @Dramaddictally!

Are we back to two episodes next week?
I enjoyed this episode although some kind of response from the FL to SHs confession would be helpful to everyone. She does an open mouthed stare that annoys me. I'm not really a fan I have to say.
The scenes with the Mom's were my favourites this week.

Yes hopefully, but I am wondering if baseball season is going to be a regular impact now.

After 9 episodes, I still don't see any new things... There are no development except in the love stories, but I don't still see why the characters fell in love with the FL... I really can't stand her manners , why she's always eating in her scene when she has to talk?

For the mystery, nobody cares about it except the ML and the last victim. So it's kinda deconnected from the rest.

The performaneces look pretty much the same for me.

This episode was just the thing to get me out of the emotional hole I was in because of the stress of my job.

For the first time I really respected Sun-ho. His confession and the realisation afterwards that he can't expect anything from Hae-yi shows that he is finally growing up emotionally.
I'm just surprised that Hae-yi was flabbergasted.

I would like to see a styled Jung-woo more often.

Jung Woo is the noble idiot in this drama (trying to protect her when it probably doesn't make any difference to the antagonist). Hae Ri even called him a coward.
