Premiere Watch: Curtain Call, The Fabulous

This week we’re in for a treat, with the buzzy KBS romance drama Curtain Call finally dropping, and a ~fabulous~ drama coming in from Netflix. Though I’m definitely in the former camp (i.e., give me alllll the old school drama feels but with a new, crisp script), I can’t deny that The Fabulous looks like a dip into a genre where Netflix rarely treads: actual romance?!

Curtain Call

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I am really looking forward to this one — and not just because I love the leading cast. And not just because I’m excited for what seems to be an old-school drama setup, with a complicated love square and The Love That Cannot Be. And not just because it boasts one of my favorite stories of all time: a person pretending to be another and then falling in love with his new false life. But take all those reasons, add the PD (River Where the Moon Rises!), and add Noh Sang-hyun, and — well — you will have a pretty accurate reading of my excitement level.

TL;DR: Kang Haneul, Ha Ji-won, classic drama vibes, chaebol heirs, play-acting grandsons, the makings of drama greatness

The Fabulous

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 8
***10/31/2022 update: This premiere has been postponed due to the Itaewon tragedy.

Reasons to watch: Chae Soo-bin is literally always great — although scripts about life in the fashion industry are not — so we’ll have to see just how enjoyable this story is. With Netflix at the helm, it’s high on flashiness, sexiness, and production value (the colors and costuming in the promo material alone have been great), but as to what kind of a story will really be told — your guess is as good as mine.

TL;DR: Chae Soo-bin, often shirtless Minho, fashion world flashiness, Netflix

Excited for Fabulous.

Cautiously optimistic for curtain call.

Gonna check out Curtain Call! Not crazy about the charbol element, but the pretending-to-be-someone-else could be interesting. I also like the leads. Kwon Sang Woo is in this. Hoping he will have a good role.

Will tune in for Curtain Call. It's always great to see Kang Ha-neul. I enjoyed Insider, even if dark and gritty.

For Fabulous, I'm not into flashy so will wait for the reviews. I hope this doesn't end up like Entourage (Korean version).

CURTAIN CALL is not my thing but for those whom it is I hope you enjoy it.

On the other hand, I am really looking forward to THE FABULOUS.

Looking forward to enjoying both, hopefully two stress free beans. Please, don’t make me eat my words. (Yes Poong, the Joseon psychiatrist, I am looking at you)

I don’t think CC will be a stress-free watch, but this OTP I’m obliged to try the first to.

The Swoon had something on Instagram about delayed post re The Fabulous due to National mourning so I wasn’t sure if that also meant postponing the release of the actual show as well.

The actual show is postponed. They didn't say until when but if it's based on the national mourning, probably by a week. Minho and CSB's Knowing Bros appearance is also delayed.

Not sure if Curtain Call is affected too.

I thought they postponed the press conference for both shows not the shows themselves.

For The Fabulous at least, sounds like both. The twitter translation says production presentation and work release. I think that'll be the press conference and show: https://twitter.com/NetflixKR/status/1586930969516408833?s=20&t=rgwtPSmroQ6tTI5dJa64ng

I'm happy to get 2 new dramas that will be very different! And no lawyer!

Curtain Call souds so mcuh like an old drama, I'm very exciting. The casting is great. Until now, I dropped KHN's dramas where he's the lead, I need a good one >_<

Fabulous is pretty short, so in the worst case, it won't be a prolonged mess :p

Gonna pass curtain call. I love KHN but I totally cannot stand HJW's acting. Will give "Fabulous" a try. I love CSB and its been a while since I have watched Min ho.

HJW is so fabulous she was my girl crush in Chocolate. I am not intrigued by the premise of CC, but I’ll try its first ep.

I have a feeling both of these are going to be bad, but I'll try them anyway.

Sadly, that's what I think, too. But at least The Fabulous looks like it could be fun bad, whereas Curtain Call looks like dull, heavy-weather bad. HJW is not my favorite actor and I just cannot picture her as a couple with KHN. I'll probably wait a few episodes to see what other beanies think, but if the show pairs them up I'm staying away.

Yeah. Fabulous have the advantage of being short. So before it grates us it will be over. Lol. I hope it’s fun and a good time pass.

Curtain call could go either way. I haven’t had luck with KHN and have dropped 3 of his last dramas. Not a fan of HJW either but I haven’t seen her works in the recent times. I usually don’t like it when she acts sweet in romance. If her role is serious she might be ok? Fingers crossed.

I loved episode one of CURTAIN CALL (Viki US). Bring the Kleenex.
KHN and HJW were excellent in the backstory 50s scenes. Tough to watch.

I am treating “Curtain Call” as a fable otherwise its many incongruities would prevent me from enjoying it.
