Love is for Suckers: Episodes 5-6

Buckets of tears this week when the wedding is called off and we see inside the hearts of our two battered-by-life leads. The way to move on is to get back to work — and, in this case, to ask your best friend to come to work with you. Kingdom of Love 2 is finally underway and we get the pandemonium of a show within a show, bringing with it a series of staged surprises, as well as a few real ones.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

As we surmised, the woman from New York who only appeared in the blink of a frame last week has come with upsetting news. She’s pregnant and In-woo is the father. Yeo-reum learns this ten minutes before the wedding ceremony and confronts In-woo immediately. He only found out a few days ago himself and was “too shocked” to tell her. He planned to tell her after the wedding. Yeo-reum exclaims that he should have told her as soon as he found out — and the echo of three years ago is all around her. Here he goes again, withholding life-altering information.

Yeo-reum refuses to marry him. He tries to change her mind, saying that their parents are there, and everything is already in motion — they can figure it all out afterward. (I am hating him with every thread of my being. Not because of the pregnancy, but because he’s so manipulative.) Yeo-reum says no, not even to save face. She can’t trust him and she won’t go through with it.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

She walks out of the wedding hall in her dress and Jae-hoon follows her to the street, putting his coat around her, and getting his car to drive her away from it all. He’s such a good friend, he doesn’t ask any questions except, “Where should we go?” She only wants to disappear, and so, he thinks of a place he knows out by the beach, where one of his former patients owns a lodge. It seems that Jae-hoon went to stay there himself after his father passed away, not letting anyone know where he was for three months.

At the beach, Yeo-reum gets support from both Jae-hoon and the lodge owner, who tells Yeo-reum about the hardships in her own life — including the aneurism that Jae-hoon saved her from back when he was still practicing as a neurosurgeon. We learn in this episode that after his father’s death, he quit the hospital and retreated into a depressed state, confining himself inside, not wanting to see daylight or other people. It’s Yeo-reum who helps him come back to life by asking him to move into the apartment above hers, checking on him every day, sharing food with him, and trying to make him smile. She’s the one who opens the blinds and becomes a literal life saver.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

Now the tables have turned and Jae-hoon knows how she feels when she asks, “Can someone be this humiliated and still go on living like nothing happened?” He tries to lower the pressure, saying she didn’t do anything wrong. But Yeo-reum blames herself for rushing the wedding and believing that she knew In-woo. Jae-hoon sticks up for her: “You trusted someone who treated you with sincerity. Don’t blame yourself for the sincerity you saw in him.”

Yeo-reum remains in a state of shock and Jae-hoon goes on caring for her, getting her to eat the way she did for him two years earlier. When she goes into their rented room and finds him sleeping against the wall in his suit, the look on her face says she’s seeing him, maybe for the first time, as a man.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

The next day, Jae-hoon tells Yeo-reum they should go home. He hid for too long after his tragedy and couldn’t ever get back to his old life. She’s braver than him and he doesn’t want her to make the same mistake. Yeo-reum agrees, she doesn’t want to dwell on it. And frankly neither do I, because we’ve got to talk about work. Last week, so much happened that I had to cut the parts about Kingdom of Love. The short story is that Yeo-reum is now working under Chae-ri on the show’s second season and she’s brought her whole staff with her. Her task is to rein in Chae-ri while helping to make this season a success.

The shoot is scheduled to start the day after the wedding (so, today) and Yeo-reum jumps into her work. When she turns her phone back on, she finds out that one cast member didn’t show up — the plastic surgeon. Hmm, know any plastic surgeons that can replace him in three hours? Well, Chae-ri does. She was once Jae-hoon’s patient (when she got hit in the face as payback for airing a cast member naked and fighting). When Chae-ri saw Jae-hoon again at Yeo-reum’s wedding, she already had him in mind for the show. She tells Yeo-reum to bring him in as a replacement or her entire team is fired.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6 Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

Yeo-reum goes to ask Jae-hoon for this favor and finds him with a busted lip. He’s just gotten into a fist fight with In-woo outside his house (very realistically carried out, I might add. In-woo’s face bruises and swells immediately and in the exact spot it should after a punch). In-woo wanted to talk to Yeo-reum, but Jae-hoon told him he needed to know when to quit. Yeo-reum ignores this and goes on with her mission to ask Jae-hoon to be on her reality show. She says she needs him and he agrees easily.

Kingdom of Love is set up like this. Ten people, five women and five men, will be living in a house together for a month. The point is for couples to pair off and find love, and they’ll be filmed and recorded everywhere as they do, including in their bedrooms. As Jae-hoon says on arrival, “I thought this was Kingdom of Love, not Kingdom of Perverts” (touché). Among the other participants are Yeo-reum’s ex-fling, Chef John Jang, and — as a surprise to everybody involved — Ji-yeon.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

Chae-ri, talented at building drama, wants to make Ji-yeon the star of the cast. On their first night in the house, she tells Ji-yeon to trip and fall (making it look like an accident). Ji-yeon falls into the pool, in nothing but a long slip, and after a moment of hesitation, Jae-hoon dives in to put his jacket around her so she can get out. It’s exactly the kind of footage Chae-ri is looking for, knowing things are about to get interesting. (As vicious as Chae-ri can be, I find her intensely likeable.)

After the first day of shooting is finished, Jae-hoon and Yeo-reum meet up to talk alone. He wants her to know the reason he’s on the show is for her. She says she hopes he can find a relationship out of it since he hasn’t seriously dated in so long. Then, in the most understated confession in the history of confessions, he says he’s sorry he didn’t hold her back from marrying In-woo — “It’s not like I have to get into a couple from a dating show, right?” Wait, hold on. What? Yeo-reum is just as confused as the rest of us. It’s so slight, she thinks she’s misunderstanding. He clarifies, but she’s understood correctly. He won’t approach her right now, since she needs time to get over what she’s been through, but he wanted her to know. He just wants to be there for her. If she needs a friend, he’ll be it. If she needs a man, he’ll be it. (My. God. Understated and highly effective.)

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6 Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

In the first week, In-woo shows up at the filming location wanting to apologize to Yeo-reum and ask if there’s still a chance. She shuts him down. If he had told her beforehand, she would have considered it, but he wasn’t honest. She wanted to marry him because he was a part of the happiest time of her life, but it’s over now, there’s no going back. She’s strong and brave, and then cries her heart out as soon as she’s alone. For his part, In-woo seems truly wrecked by the whole thing too.

Later, Yeo-reum tells Jae-hoon she needs a friend right now, not a man. And he proceeds with the craziness of reality TV for her. At Ji-yeon’s request, he meets off-camera to discuss the show. Ji-yeon asks him to choose her as his partner. She understands he likes Yeo-reum, but she doesn’t want to be embarrassed on TV as someone no one wants. If his choice will be meaningless anyway, he should pick her. So, when it comes down to it, he does. However, Ji-yeon already made it known during her introduction to the cast that she and Jae-hoon were seeing each other before and he turned her down. She also says she will keep pursuing him.

Chae-ri and even Yeo-reum love the drama of Ji-yeon’s confession. But it seems to make Yeo-reum antsy when she sees Jae-hoon actually pick Ji-yeon during filming. It gets a little more uncomfortable when Chae-ri tells Yeo-reum she will have to film their kiss scene (which we won’t see until next week).

Love is for Suckers Episodes 5-6

I continue to love everything about this drama. For one, it’s acted so well. Siwon continues to amaze me. I’ve always liked his ability to play extremes. He can go goofy (more so than many actors would even dare to try) and then pull it right back in and play serious and mature. In this role, he’s a natural no matter what it’s calling for and I find him so believable.

Lee Da-hee is breaking my heart in just about every scene, and this week, every time she interacted with her mom I was in straight-up tears. When her mom cries after the wedding, I got nervous about exactly which part might be upsetting her. So, when she talks to Yeo-reum on the phone and apologizes for rushing her into the wedding — feeling like a burden on her — and we see how understanding and worried she is, I fell apart just as much as the two characters did.

After the breakneck pace of last week, I was glad to see Episode 6 slow down some. I’m a little worried, though, about how interesting the reality show aspect will be, since I’m not sure I can care about any of the new characters. Also, we already know where Jae-hoon’s heart lies — I have no worries about him suddenly falling for Ji-yeon along the way. It’s Yeo-reum that has to decide to move on with Jae-hoon (or not). Is there enough real tension here? Will the reality show manufacture some drama — as reality shows do? I’m so hooked on Love is for Suckers, I’m curious to see how Kingdom of Love will surprise me.

I love this show!!

H*~%|!s^% That confession. Can he be any more smooth!! Girl, grab him. Grab him NOW!

I gotta say, I came to this show for Lee Da hee. I love her. But I am impressed with Siwon. He is just effortlessly swoony here.

Need more Kang PD!
Also, how awesome is the hoobae! The way he handled Kang PD and politely said ‘we aren’t that close’ was cheer worthy. I hope Kang PD sees value in people and makes some friends along the way.

Kang PD is in desperate need of friends and validation from real people rather than engaging in ratings wars and ignoring the shame and pain she causes as acceptable collateral damage.

I have long been a fan of both Lee Da-hee and Siwon (ever since he played the second lead in SHE WAS PRETTY). Lee Da-hee gave a truly bravura performance in SEARCH: WWW and I think she is turning in another one on this show as well. I was really excited to hear that they would pair off in this show.

The Hoobae is really awesome.

And Kang PD is awesome too.

Lee Da Hee is just amazing and excited to see more of her in future.

Hard agree on all the above. Watching this show is SUCH a joy! I don't usually expect dramas to be relatable so it's hitting all the right notes to see such a healthy friendship and realistic struggles.

And that CONFESSION. I actually had to rewind just to re-appreciate it. "Understated and highly effective" is so on the nose.

This is my first time watching Lee Da Hee act--I actually got to know and love her from her appearances in Running Man, but hadn't watched any of her dramas. Absolutely going to fix that now!

Thank you for the recap @dramaddictally. I am actually surprised at myself since I am looking forward to the reality show hi-jinks. Only because I hope the social commentary stays and to see how it affects the relationship between our two friends.
I kind of adore our second female lead and I saw a side of PD that makes me think of Seo Do Yoen from IHYV (who was, in a funny coincidence, played by Lee Da Hee). Both actress are doing a brilliant job of making their characters likable even sympathetic, which is a tough job since usually the female character types of Love Rival and Professional Antagonist have been long been two dimensional roles.

Most of all though, I am a happy drama watcher because I can relate to BOTH leads and they are endearing to boot!

I LOVE Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon and how they take care of each other. I HATE ‘Kingdom of Love.’ Dating shows are gross and I’m finding this one as hard to watch as I feared. I don’t know how I’m going to continue, since the show-within-the-show is integral to the development of the plot and the love geometry - maybe by treating it as a sociological study of how decent people deal with awful people in tight quarters? I do have to admire the pretexts for showcasing the highest concentration of bare male torsos I’ve seen in a kdrama. And Siwon in the Fright Wig of Emotional Breakdown was both sad and hilarious.

Secondary female characters who at first appeared sympathetic are getting less so for me. NY Woman didn’t tell In-woo about her pregnancy in good time because of her pride - so she gets to keep her pride at the expense of YR’s, even though YR is completely innocent and ignorant. I know NYW is in a hard situation, but that makes her seem nearly as self-centered as In-woo. And maybe I'm in a minority but I’m rapidly losing sympathy for Ji-yeon. She’s more deceptive and manipulative than she first appeared and doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer - in stark contrast to Jae-hoon, who takes 'no' for an answer far too well. It’s a bad combination.

JH's confession was the extremely rare triple-twist understatement with forward swoon. High degree of difficulty, maximum points, 10/10.

No, you are not alone I am in the camp with you. From the time Jiyeon turned up at Jaehoon’s clinic for a consultation I knew she was dodgy. I didn’t like Jiyeon’s inability to accept Jaehoon’s clear message he wasn’t interested and continually put him in a situation of feeling obligated to meet up with her.

Yes actually I really liked when she made him realize that standing her up on the date wasn't good but then she again went after him. I did give her the leeway of being a go getter but no longer when she publicly announced her and JH's situation.

She quickly went from 'persistent' and 'go-getter' to 'the girl who can't take a hint' or 'the one who can't take no for an answer.' After a point, it's simply clingy, and I would hope, for the sake of her own self-preservation, she can stop.
It's almost like she has a 'I will be the one to change this man' kind of a complex.
Sis, he won't change. And you won't be the one doing it, even if he does.

I especially didn't like when she was reflecting on it but the other contestant told her she was cool. Lol no. She does realize it's a stupid move but what not that it puts JH in a bad light. You can make stupid moves and forgive yourself for that because you're in love but it leaves an impact on the other person, who is going to rectify that?

Frankly, it didn't sit well that she came to tell Yoo-reum minutes to her wedding. But I sort of see reasons with her. Somewhere along her lines she said something like she wanted Yoo-reum to know what she was getting into. It's a life-altering moment to get married. Everything changes when you're married. You'll be forced and expected to forgive him for getting someone pregnant once you're both married.
I think that along with her selfish interests, she wanted Yoo-reum to make an informed decision on whether or not she wanted to go ahead with the marriage spend the rest of her married life with someone like New York In-woo, not necessarily that In-woo was manipulative in not telling Yoo-reum earlier. I think there's more to it than In-woo being dishonest, there's something he did during his trust with NYW that NYW wants to spare Yoo-reum from experiencing, or at least be aware of.

I agree with this - it feels like there was more than a simple (potentially drunken?) one-nighter between these two. He probably manipulated her too, he's good at that - and now that she's left literally bearing the consequences of that and he has rejected her by running back to Korea to marry his ex... she wants a little retribution. I can't blame her much for that, even if her timing was terrifically awful. And with marriage and divorce being such heavy things in a culture like Korea's, she knows that Yeo Reum should know about the tryst/baby so she can make an informed decision about something that big. She isn't trying to steal In Woo away - although, in my opinion, she can have him if she wants, we have no further use for the guy. She's just using the information she has in the most personally gratifying and (to her anyway) responsible way possible.

If the subtitles for NY Woman’s explanation to In-woo and his to YR were accurate (always a big if), the timing was:
- NYW got pregnant during a one-night stand and didn’t tell In-woo because of her pride. She intended to go through with the pregnancy and raise the child on her own.
- In-woo left NY in ignorance and got engaged to YR.
- NYW heard about his engagement, realized he and YR both should know about the pregnancy, came to Seoul, and told In-woo ‘a few days’ before the wedding.
- In-woo panicked and didn’t tell YR during those few days.
- NYW somehow (how?) figured out that YR still didn’t know and came to the wedding to tell her.

I completely agree that YR should have been informed and that NYW wasn’t wrong to tell her, terrible timing or no, since In-woo didn't. It does look like the show gives both NYW and In-woo a share of blame for the timing: NYW for not telling In-woo about the pregnancy until very close to his wedding, and In-woo for being a deceitful coward. No rejection or running off has been explicitly shown yet, but I’d be completely unsurprised if you’re right and In-woo was manipulative and a liar-by-omission to NYW as well. Why wouldn't she have told him earlier? Show wants me to be more sympathetic to him than I can manage. I hope (but doubt) we've seen the last of both of them.

A pregnant woman chooses when to tell the man who impregnated her (or not tell him, as the case may be). She makes that decision after however long it takes her to reach it. In this woman's case she decided to say nothing and raise the child alone because of her "pride" but then flies from NY to Korea to tell him after all, and then hangs around to disrupt his wedding. What happened to her pride? What happened to her common sense, assuming she has any? She's every bit as bad as In-woo for withholding information until it suits her to disclose it. He should have married her when YR walked out on the wedding and then they could have lived happily ever after hiding things from each other and picking the worst possible moment to divulge.

I am someone who won’t touch a reality show with a long pole. This is cringe to watch for me. But I am seeing it in a detached manner and more focused on characters. I helps that we are seeing the BTS version and not the edited one.

Ji Heon (art lady) is digging a deep hole for herself. She got a clear rejection. But seeing him again on the show is making her do crazy things. She is just going to get hurt in a much higher magnitude and she only has herself to blame.

One of the massive themes in this show in general is motivation.

Ji Yeon is motivated by her clingy desire to attache herself to Jae Hoon. She self-deludes in saying she will be a "friend" to him and let him use her on the show, claiming her motivation as not wanting to be the unwanted woman on television. B.S. She is plotting to overthrow his emotional involvement with Yae Reum, even if he keeps telling her (and we can see in his face and actions) that doing so is impossible.

In Woo is motivated by his need to "win." He probably does love Yeo Reum, in whatever capacity he is actually capable of, but at this point he is just hurting from the rejection and desperate to not be the loser. He cannot step back and acknowledge his own part in the problem.

Yeo Reum's motivation is her need to find calm, happy, loving stability. She wants to step into the next phase of her life, although she is learning some hard lessons about leaping before looking which tempers her spontaneity. She is a vivacious person with a warm heart, though, so she will come out of it eventually.

Jae Hoon is motivated mostly by his love and concern for Yeo Reum. He is laser focused on her right now, and hopefully patient enough to ride out her current emotional storm. He's being open about it with others, though, which is admirable - he has not led on Ji Yeon, even if she is not hearing him when he speaks. He even told Yeo Reum where he stands. You could see the kind of sad expression on his face when she chose "friend" over "man," but he's strong enough to wait for her.

I understand @elinor and I have some of the same concerns about Kingdom of Love reality dating show. I am hoping Yeo Reum will be a softening influence and the second season will be more heartwarming than the lowest common denominator content of season 1 under PD Chae Ri. Also, that the lens will lean toward social commentary, or sociological study as you say.

Completely agree on everything you say, although I have never watched a dating reality show so it has some interest, especially where the ghastly preeners like John Jang are concerned. I look forward to their antics being exposed in contrast to Jae-Hoon's thoughtful behaviour (and I include Ji-Yeon's manipulations in the antics - she is sly and setting a trap for Hae-Hoon to fall into). I noticed his hesitation for more than a few seconds before jumping in the pool to rescue her and his face had a look of resignation. I think he sees through her all too well but his innate decency demanded he rescue her. I think Jae-Hoon and the webtoon writer lady are going to show everyone else up, just by being their real selves, something that will come back to bite all the other extreme show-offs who won't expect to be beaten by simple decency. However, bring on the wrestling men stripped to the waist. I'll be ready with sliced potatoes for any sunburn casualties.

@dramaddictally thank you for the weecap. This show is on point every week and has me desperately waiting for the weecap to discuss the content.

Quote of this week was Chaeri’s pep talk ‘Do you want to be Cinderella or an unloved carcus’😱 Chaeri is so manipulative she would get gold if it was an Olympic sport. When she said to Yeoreum that she was finally back to her old self. I realised she was not the cold harsh woman she likes to present herself as but was helping a sister out by providing an outlet for her to rant at to prevent Yeoreum falling into the depths of despair. From the vomiting scene I knew Chaeri had been deeply effected by her strained relationship with her mother figure so clearly has a soft side she keeps uncover by presenting as uncaring.

I loved the venue for the reality show with the night sounds of the crickets it presents as a holiday destination. I can’t believe Jiyeon’s character would choose to be on a show like that and then start to worry about the public humiliation of being rejected. Seriously, who goes on a show like that expecting to find a real life date. Anyone who signed up to that show after watching season one knew exactly what they were getting into, unlike the unsuspecting candidates from season one.

Is the chef John Jang so ego driven that he can’t handle any challenge to his number one status. He is the most experienced at being mic’d yet still didn’t think to turn it off for his chat with his female counterpart. Has he seriously forgotten that the reason he got into the war with Jaehoon was because he was caught on the mic chatting derogatorily about Yeoreum?

The blatant ‘get your abs out’ was just priceless. It reminded me of the fan service shower scenes heated discussion we had in the ‘unpopular K drama opinions’ post. I also loved the true to life women’s reaction when they were taken to the water dunking game😬

This show is doing a great job of showing real characters. Yeoreum’s parents’ genuine love for her and Sangwoo’s loyalty and care for his PD were spot on. The stages of Jaehoon’s depression were realistically portrayed and it was lovely to see how a true friend gets the balance right by standing alongside (knowing when to talk and when to listen and helping with basic human needs).

They do have issues and in anyother situation I'll stick by what you said. But seeing these two and knowing how taking no action will put JH back in a rut like he was 2 years ago seems like he needs to act first and then see the result. Its risky, I know but he is the kind of person who waits for life to sort out itself so maybe theu can sort out those issues together. (This may just be a totally dysfunctional approach as well haha).

Real life issues will always exist. There is no perfect time to find love.
I agree that ML is someone who was avoiding facing his situation. But he is willing to take that chance for her. He didn’t worry about losing the friendship and acting more hesitant. I liked that about him. He was confident a knot being her friend even if she rejected him.
And FL made a wrong choice. Her career needs a shake up but I don’t think she has emotional issues.

While I'm not sure if really broken people should go the marriage route before looking into themselves, these two are individuals who can get over their implications. Their self esteem and depression will take time, a lot of it. And thinking that once you're healed you should only then find love pushes the happy ever after narrative that doesn't really exist. As you said, there will always be problems in life. (But tbh I too in rl feel that these are reasons enough to stay away from commitment-I'm like Jae Hoon 😂, but I don't see that for the characters).

So I'm in a love-hate relationship with Chae-ri. I love how good she is at her job and her midas touch on the ratings each week but her methods...I like her methods but don't like that she doesn't have a stop point to it. That's what I see at least. I'm not wanting her to rein it in, just don't go overboard.
Not to add that show of care she gave to Yoo-reum even if it was for a brief moment.

'Don't threaten me with my staff ever again'
I was waiting for when Yoo-reum would say something along this lines and she did. It should be a push and pull not a push and take-it-in. Moving forward, I want her to be more vocal to Chae-ri.

Jae-hoon's confession : I liked it. Understated is perfect to describe it. His consideration by asking her he's going to wait until she's ready, ✅. 'Just know that you have a man standing by to sweep you off your feet', ' I'll be waiting', ' Grieve. I'll wait for you to be done with it '. Another In-woo would have capitalized on it worked their way into Yoo-reum's heart by showering her with love - left, right, and center - but he didn't.

I was expecting some blame game whenever Yoo-reum gets to have the conversation with her parents and I was relieved to see how it turned out.

I like go-getters like In-woo especially when they share my sentiments and viewpoints on issues. But adding manipulation into the mix is a no-no. Not allowed. Honesty is of the essence and you missed it. Did he really bank on Yoo-reum staying with him peradventure his plan went well and he told her post-wedding? You can't change things so you'll have to leave with it. Even without saying it it can be smelt a mile away. For someone who knows what Yoo-reum needed at this stage in her life and offered it up without mincing words, I don't get his dishonesty nor do I understand it.

Is this the time where Yoo-reum is once again seeing Jae-hoon as a man? I don't want her to jump into him just yet. Sort your feelings out. Reciprocating Jae-hoon's feelings properly and without holds can come on later. I'd want to see little sneak peeks though.
And I like her work relationship with her assistant PD. They truly respect each other.

Actually, if you listened carefully to the reason why Yeoreum was place with Cae-ri it was precisely because Chae-ri sometimes goes to far. Yeo-reum is there to keep Chae-ri from going off the rails. Think of Extraordinary Attorney Woo going "Whoa, Whoa" when Chaeri is starting to go too far.

I understand being persistent when you have a goal in mind, but you also have to know when to stop. Ji-yeon is one of those people who just doesn't know. Ji-yeon, dear, Jae-hoon is just not into you! He's made that abundantly clear! Please stop! It doesn't make you look cute, or smart. It's embarrassing.

Another character who I wish could see the error of his ways is In-woo. Does he really think everything's ok and it'll all just blow over?? Ridiculous.

I'm totally into this show though!

I find funny that people are judging Ji-Yeon when she's in the same situation than Jae-Hoon with Yeo-Reum. Both are honest with their feelings, they want to stay with the person and are ok to be used waiting for the possibility of reciprocity.

I wonder and I'm kinda scared by how the past of Jae-Hoon will be made public. How he will live with it.

PD Chae-Ri is really good at doing her job. Sadly I really don't like this kind of show and the tactics used for it are pretty lame.

That's interesting. JH did seem to take the rejection better than JY but we'll see if he pushes through as strongly as JY. I think rather than a male, female thing this has a lot to do with how the characters are written and portrayed. I'm watching another show rn, that has the FL and SML do the same wrong thing. It is weirdly easier to forgive the FL but not the SML.

JY pushed only because they're in the same show.

The only difference is the ML and he liked the FL and she's only the second female lead. We are programmed to love the main couple and not accept interference :p

The difference is 1) what she did was in public. She threw another candidates personal history along with hers for everyone to hear without his consent. 2) she doesn’t have a history with JH. they were just strangers who met on a blind date. With friends certain comfort exists to say such things. But with strangers it puts pressure on them.

I had no issues when she wanted to woo him. I applauded her courage. But the moment she disclosed it on the show, I wasn’t sure if she is that innocent anymore.

Anyway I do feel she is digging a deep hole for herself. she is not coming out of this show unscathed.

I don't agree. They saw each other more than once at the blind date. They met and communicated by phone. They're not stranger.

It's a TV show, she acted as well. She didn't force her on him. He can choose other girls. She was just honest about her own feelings.

It was fine to say she liked him. I have no issues with that. But saying he rejected her before (which happened outside the show) made me uncomfortable.
Now every action of his is viewed with that lens.
I also worry that he told her he likes YR and hope it wasn’t a bad choice.

Their entire relationship was one sided. He was just answering her in mono syllables. I still don’t see them as close to each other. But in strange land this is close enough I guess.

And let's not forget JY knows JH likes YR. He has made that clear even before she knew about YR. JH may be persisting for YR despite the rejection (we shall see in the next episode what even happens because this show is deceiving) but he never came between her and In woo. He didn't even confess when he wanted to. JY on the other hand, knowing that full well went ahead with saying that. And yeah they aren't that close and saying publicly puts a spotlight on JH. Not a good one.

9

Jae SWOONY Hoon! That confession goes into the Hall of Fame of Confessions. It was a difficult one but the writer delivered. And there was no better time for it. YR needs to know what JH feels like now that JY is trying to pair up with him.

Speaking of JY, I'm not a fan. But now her and JH are together playing a dangerous game, so I can't blame her entirely.

Kang Chae Ri is vicious but boy is she competent. I can see her climbing the ladder easily and becoming the Variety Departments Head. YR is competent too but in another way. She is so sweet and is full of care. I feel that shows why her shows weren't a hit, she was not focused on making a hit but delivering the right emotion.
Nonetheless, I do not like KCR as much as everyone else here. We do know her sympathetic background but she chose to be mean to YR even if she cared behind her back. It's hard to value her slight care in comparison with her outrightly being mean upfront.

I think the love for KCR comes from the fact that she's entertaining, and not because we'd want her as her colleague. (nope!)

It's quite interesting that the confession happened so early on. Like you said, YR needed to know. I'm sure JH has had his fair share of lady-companions over the years, but this is the first time YR will be seeing a woman with him, *with* the explicit knowledge that he likes her instead. I wonder how she's going to feel with all this hyper-proximity. :P

I know for a fact, that if it were KCR, she would have punched Ji-Yeon's face out of the frame if she tried to plant a kiss... much like Jo Yiseo from Itaewon Class! ^^

I firmly believe the (dating) show-within-a-show concept needed Lee Dahee as their female lead. And that's because Kingdom of Love is meant to be a Single's Inferno parody, and I cannot unsee it!

Man, Kang Chae-Ri is a hoot! Plus, she's great at her job! She's willing to do anything for those ratings, and I'm here for it!
I knew since day 1, Ji-yeon would turn out to be snake. Well, not the cheap villainous Second FL from Makjangs kind, but yeah, her clinginess, and unwillingness to take no for an answer makes me fume. I wish she can get eliminated, if there's a provision for that.
Oh, and can Chae-Ri please insert Yeo-Reum as a wildcard entry because she's bored and suddenly wishes to play cupid between Jae-Hoon and Yeo-Reum? Hahh!

The confession... a part of me thinks a grander one would have swept Yeo-Reum off her feet, and she'd kinda go with the flow and say yes (which is what we want at the end of the day) but then we've already seen how pressured she can feel because of those grand-gestures, and ultimately do something she regrets (In-Woo). So, while the slow-burn is agonizing, but I'll stick with it for now. I loved how her breath quietly hitched at the confession, indicating her heart isn't completely an immovable rock and that she does feel a little something for Jae-hoon, deep down, somehwere! :)

You guys... She. brought back. light. into his life!! Both figuratively and literally 🥺

What a fantastic pair of episodes imo. I loved loved loved the montage at the beggining of ep 5, and seeing YR care so much about her friend really brought tears to my eyes. Whenever she turned up at Jae-hoon's door, YR was bathed in light, so full of vitality and color and smiles - quite opposite of JH, who spends his days in the dark, wearing dark clothes, in his own grief and sadness. He doesn't let her in until she's smothering him with food and love and care, and when he finally does let her into his house, she pulls apart the drapes and lets light into his home. It was equally sweet seeing JH return the favor and care for her, he helped her "disappear" for a while. I love friends-to-lovers stories where the friends actually love and care for each other before they become a couple.

I really liked the confession. 10/10, no notes. I hope YR will heal soon and jump on that man-- uhh i mean the opportunity 😏

The Kingdom of Love stuff is fine for now, I hope it doesn't get too repetitive. Kang Chae-ri continues to be very fun, I like how she cares for YR but acts tough when called out 💃

After episode 4 left me with a slightly bitter aftertaste last week, I approached the two new episodes with some reluctance. But after the first fifteen minutes, I knew I was in for the ride.

I melted away at how Jae-hoon wordlessly followed Yeo-reum and was just there for her as she left her wedding .
In general, Jae-hoon is a gentleman, which the women in the dating show also seem to appreciate.

I found the glimpse behind the reality shows interesting, even though I don't watch them myself.

Ji-yeon is not taking no for an answer, is she? I do not hate her as much as I do In-woo- who is simply despicable, perhaps in part because I can sympathize with her to some extent. Partly because she did not come on the show for Jae-hoon (who was the last minute substitute) and after looking at the other four male contestants she is frankly right in seeing him as the best of the lot. Also, when she explained why she came on the show it rang true.

The two episodes were in stark contrast: Episode five was about what happened to the wedding and what happened in the past. Episode six begins our show within the show.

I know we are supposed to hate Chae-ri but just like Dramatictally I actually like her- to some extent. She may be obnoxious and arrogant, but you can also see that she is truly dedicated to making a truly entertaining show. When John Jang starts to upset the dynamics of her show by talking about his 'Fling" with Yeo-reum, etc. she is genuinely pissed off- and with good reason. Above all she may be cynical but she also believes in being truthful. There are things to dislike about her character but also things to like as well.

But what I really loved was the way Jae-hoon put the romantic ball in motion. "If you need a friend, I can be your friend, if you need a man I can be a man." What a perfect non-confession confession- truly no pressure, but he has now given Yeoreum a very real option for her future. Now the ball is in her court. Given her very vulnerable state that is perfect for her. It would be wrong to try to sweep her off her feet, but it is absolutely right to give her a truly free choice.

This show!!!!!! How can it do this to me???

Ep 5 was such a winner. It felt like a masterclass in how to balance swift plot movement and character development/revelation. So good.

I was very impressed by beanies’ prediction about In Woo not being the one to tell Yeo Reum about the pregnancy - your assessment of his character was spot on. I must confess that in YR’s shoes, I probably would have been swept up by IW’s reappearance and declarations of love, and said yes to his proposal too. I’m not sure I would have had her strength to cancel the wedding like that, but it was absolutely the right choice. How could you trust a cowardly dishonest person like that? Whilst I get why he acted that way, for me, it’s unforgivable.

I’m intrigued by Ji Yeon’s character and the different takes on her here. I think for me, the main difference between her and Jae Hoon is that JY and JH have no history. He is still very much a stranger to her and it’s not yet clear to me what she sees in him that makes her so determined and single-minded. It also doesn’t make sense that she would go on a show like this, and I see her as manipulative in offering to be used, whereas JH offering the same thing is about caring for YR in the way she needs and asks to be cared for. JH may not be awarded for that in the end (as viewers, we know he will, but his character wouldn’t), but he’s willing to put her first in a very honest and open way.

The fact that YR’s parents recognised their own role/influence in what happened with the wedding rather than merely feeling sorry for themselves sealed the deal on this show for me. I cried buckets. I love it when characters don’t just deflect their own role and responsibility in a difficult situation, seeing themselves as victims. Her parents understood and took responsibility for their part, and that is extremely admirable when you’re experiencing so much hurt yourself.

Sang Woo is an adorable and loyal friend - I love that YR keeps teasing him about being in love with her and he’s like, “Nope!”🙅🏻‍♂️🤣 They have a lovely, respectful relationship as colleagues and nascent friends. Chae Ri, on the other hand, continues to walk that fine line between goodie and baddie and I love it. She’s such a well-written multi-dimensional character, and I like how perceptive she is about people and their motivations. That’s why she’s so good at her job, and it’s both scary and impressive. I would run a mile from someone like that in real life, but she’s a fantastic character to have in a drama!😅

The one part of the show I’m struggling to withstand is the reality tv show element. It makes me want to crawl out of my skin, seeing people be blatantly self-serving and opportunistic in order to self-promote.🤢🤮 I can’t imagine being in an environment where there’s basically no one you can trust - this would be hell for me. Also, the horrible dating app developer using our webtoon artist is a disgusting cretin - at least the others are vaguely...

The reality show concept is exactly for characters like the dating app guy and the Chef who both see it as free advertising. That’s why I would never watch it. I watched one season of the Apprentice and loved the harshness of the Interview episode to remind me to stay calm when I attend interviews as I would never have to face anything on that level. It always exposed the all talk and no substance people.

When I watched the first season of Big brother the concept was new and I wanted to see how it would work from a psychological point of view. We used to discuss it as a team of mental health professionals and with my social work friends. After that I didn’t get why anyone would go on the show knowing how it effected people.

This show having lawyers and teachers makes no sense as this would tarnish their reputations and have long term implications for their careers.

I also don’t understand the webtoon artist as she is better off joining a dating agency where they properly matchmake. Whenever they show public opinions on dramas and we have had it confirmed in real life they adopt a judge and reject with minimal facts approach which has a significant impact on the mental health of the victims. Beauty standards being ridiculously high makes everyone vulnerable hence the high number of plastic surgeons so I don’t get why someone who must have been subjected to ridicule as a child would willingly expose themselves to a wider audience of potential bullies by being on tv.

Webtoon lady might not have watched reality shows and is entirely innocent, thinking it might be a similar vibe to politely drinking tea and chatting on a blind date. She could also be on a bit of a research trip to see if self-absorbed vacuous people actually do have any redeeming qualities (or to harvest their over the top personas for use in the next webtoon). Or maybe she's just spent so much time by herself she's ready to bust out and get wild. I've got my eye on her. I think there's more to her than we imagine right now.

I love this show even more this week.
I can't believe Yeo Reum did not go all lovey eyes with that confession. Jae Hoon gave such a smooth and swoony speech!
I too am not worried that Jae Hoon will fall for Ji Yeon. But I am worried that Yeo Reum will not do anyrhing about it and just push JH away.
Chae Ri does have the personality to handle a show like Kingdom of Love. I like that Yeo Reum keeps her in check. But I get a feeling that Chae Ri is a closet fan of YR despite all she says and does.
My heart broke on all YR and her mom scenes. I love them too.
I worry that JH and JY will be the popular OTP of the show which may force their families to push even harder for them to work things out in reality.
Regardless, I wish that YR will not dawdle too much. I applaud her ending things with her ex. I do not particularly want to see In Woo anytime soon. I do look forward to the interrogation of their meddling friends next week.

I love the OTP and their story, but I'm with @elinor when it comes to the reality show aspect the drama. I really hate them IRL, so I found it really off-putting watching it in the drama to the extent that I was FF through a lot of it. If that aspect of the drama is heavily concentrated on in the next few episodes, I can see myself dropping this which is a pity because the main couple are great.
Separately, I loved how the FL dealt with IW and her relationship with her parents, and the confession was perfect. I also have no sympathy with the 2FL, she's way too manipulative.
Hopefully things improve in relation to emphasis on the friendship to relationship aspect of the OTP next week but I'm not optimistic.

I forced myself not to FF for these episodes, but I might have to resort to that to get through the 'reality' parts - which are anything but real, of course. As @mayhemf said, it helps that we're seeing 'Kingdom' mostly from BTS, and its one value is that it makes it clear how scripted and phony such shows are.

The layers of fakery are intriguing, and I do like seeing how the contestants present themselves differently in ‘Kingdom’ vs. ‘Kingdom BTS.’ JH is almost the only one who seems like the same person on- and off-camera, but he’s going along with JY’s secret ‘choose me’ plan so even his on-camera persona is deceptive to the reality-show audience. Ji-wan has been set up as a painfully sincere, authentic person and thus a fish out of water in ‘Kingdom’ - will she show hidden depths, too?

John Jang is such an ass and I can’t wait to see him get his comeuppance again. JH using his name to call out his inauthenticity and pretentiousness, putting him in a headlock, mocking his English, and generally making him look an immature fool was the second-best thing in episode 6.

I honestly would prefer more discretion in any other case but Jae-Hoon's mildly annoyed expression around Ji-Yeon, almost like she gives him a headache, or he's smelt something bad, gives me life. He has that expression when he's on cam for the reality show too, like he couldn't be bothered to disguise it for anything remotely more... pleasant! xD
On the other hand, he positively has googly eyes around Yeo-Reum, ever since ep2 where he caught her asleep, and ~fELt tHInGss~
Haha, i think I swooned more at the 'My type of girl... is someone who loves Dakbal (chicken feet)' more than his 'I can be a friend if you want. I can be your man if you want' confession! :P :P

On that confession -- last week I had thought it would be too soon or in bad taste for our ML to confess right after FL cancels her wedding. I thought the only option was for him to help her through another breakup, like he did the first time Yeo-reum and In-woo broke up. I just didn't see a way out of it.

But show managed to pull it off masterfully. I didn't get any off vibe from it, and I guess Yeo-reum was not totally shocked after seeing Jae-hoon asleep that morning in the beach house. Deep inside she already knew.

Well, I like her response. She chewed it out, in her head. She sat over it, had a good cry too, before answering Jae-Hoon. Something along the lines of 'For now, I would only like you to be a friend, because I need you, as a friend.'. And that offer too, was up for grabs in Jae-Hoon's confession. It isn't a flat out 'No!'. It isn't even a 'Dude, we've been friends forever; you're practically my brother now.'
Nope. None of that. Thank God. Because I don't know how you come back from a rejection like that. Afaik, Yeo-Reum's wasn't even a rejection. She just, in a way, asked for more time. And I'm Soooooo~ excited! <3

I love the confession, no bushing around, no further delays from his side and totally on point. Just realized that this simple confession is thousand times better than the the extravagant ones.

Yoo Reum calling of the wedding and then finally ending with the manipulative In Woo is the best decision she had taken. It was so so so brave of her .

Even though Kang Chaeri seems unapproachable person, but she does seem to care about people in her own way and she is best at her job. She is kinda growing on me and i really cant wait for her backstory.

I am still loving this show, although I hate that Jae Hoon is on this reality show. But it does serve to increase the drama. But I was confused as to what Chae-ri was warning (or threatening) Jae Hoon about. I got lost in that whole scene about the rules etc. Was she warning him not to date Yeo-reum?
Ji-yeon annoys me to no end (as a good second lead woman should). But I couldn't believe she revealed their private backstory on TV. And I wish he didn't believe her that she was okay with being used.

That scene wasn’t too clear to me either. I think I’m her own way she is protecting her team YR. She already knew ChefJohn guy was running his mouth and making it sound like YR was having flings while probably ready to marry another man. And if JH is seen too close to YR the show might be in trouble because he is not serious about finding a partner. Atleast the other participants will see this as an issue and may jeopardize the show.

So she is asking him to stay away from her due to his personal feelings and focus on the show.

Getting staff mixed up won’t bode well for anyone.

I had trouble understanding that warning, too - your take makes sense. I thought Chae-ri might also be concerned that JH would go after John Jang to protect YR, the way he did after Jang was a jerk during the Ramen Chef program, as that incident was part of the transcript she showed JH. I'm sure she'd love conflict between men on the show, but she wants it to be over a woman on the show, not the staff.
