News bites: August 3, 2022

Do Sang-woo, Shin Jae-ha, Cha Eun-woo
Do Sang-woo, Shin Jae-ha, Cha Eun-woo

  • tvN’s Alchemy of Souls has started filming for Part 2 and Do Sang-woo (The One and Only) has been added to the lineup. Who wants to bet he’s a baddie? Most of the cast will be reprising their roles, except Jung So-min, who was only contracted for the first part of the series. (Cue: weeping) For Part 2, Go Yoon-jung (the original Nak-su) will be returning to the forefront as our heroine. Production continues under PD Park Joon-hwa and writers Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran. [YTN]
  • Meanwhile, Shin Jae-ha (My Unfamiliar Family) is joining Jeon Do-yeon (Human Disqualification) and Jung Kyung-ho (Hospital Playlist 2) in tvN’s One Time Scandal (roughly translated). Aiming for a 2023 broadcast, PD Yoo Je-won (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) is at the helm, with writing by Yang Hee-seung (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju). [Osen]
  • Cha Eun-woo (True Beauty) has been offered a new romance called This Relationship is Uncontrollable (roughly translated), playing a lawyer — dramaland’s favorite job this year. He will be facing some unprecedented challenges, though, involving a Joseon-era curse and a 300-year-old forbidden text. A broadcaster has not yet been announced, but PD Nam Ki-hoon (Kiss Sixth Sense) is attached to direct with Noh Ji-seol (100 Days My Prince) penning the scripts. [Sports Chosun]

if you wish upon me poster

  • Over on KBS, another poster has come out for If You Wish Upon Me, starring Ji Chang-wook (The Sound of Magic), Sung Dong-il (Ghost Doctor), and Sooyoung (Run On). The melodrama will be coming to our screens next week, starting August 10 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [KBS]
  • A new poster has dropped for seezn’s upcoming Another Record: Lee Je-hoon. As a quasi-documentary, the story will be weaving in aspects of the real-life actor  Lee Je-hoon (Move to Heaven) amidst an imagined reality. Directed by Yoon Dan-bi (Moving On), the film will be launching August 18 on seezn. [SBS]

  • Ahead of its premiere in just a few days, another trailer has been put out for the Netflix film Carter. Starring Joo-won (Alice) and directed by Jung Byung-gil (The Gray Man, The Villainess), the action blockbuster releases this week on August 5. [Yonhap News]
  • More stills have been released for KBS’s Love According to Law, featuring our story’s main friend group: Lee Seung-gi (Mouse), Lee Se-young’s (The Red Sleeve Cuff), Kim Seul-gi (Find Me in Your Memory) and Oh Dong-min (Memorials). With the start date now pushed back by a week (cue: more weeping), the romance will be airing September 5 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [News1 (1), (2), Newsis]

Loving the pictures they are putting out but I am becoming aware that they add clues to the posters so will be studying them in detail before assuming it will be a light and fluffy drama. Not bitter, not bitter at all….

Carter: Thank goodness it's a movie instead of another binge-from-hell-Friday series as I try to catch up for What We're Watching on Saturday.

Elsewhere: Kim Seul-gi!! Naksu!

@tccolb: So the production team has now come out and confirmed as opposed to the previous “please understand we can’t say anything” dodge that JSM won’t be around for Part 2? Makes me really cross. I suppose I better ‘grow up’ and get over it, right?

i thought "part 2" was the last 10 episodes... but it is an actual Season 2 of another 20 episodes?? i'm so confused, but still MAD cuz they spoiled the story to some extent saying Jung So Min isn't featured in the second season...
grrrrrrr.... i'm loving this drama, but now i'm going to hate it?

I don’t think Part 2 is going to be 20 eps. They previously said 10 and they haven’t contradicted that. In any case, it is such a pity that JSM is out.
Btw, the Korean article says that the new male character is going to be Yul’s relative, maybe an uncle? My Korean isn’t fluent as yet so I think that’s the role but am not certain.

They're pulling an "Arthdal", one show/season split into 2 parts (or "three" in Arthdal's case but not actually), air the first 2/3rds, air another show, air the last third, and then call it "seasons" for some reason, and confuse all the viewers.

(oh and then in Arthdal's case announce an ACTUAL second season months/years later.)

This is different because they said it from the beginning that they are considering a second season and actually started shooting it midway while the first airs. I also think it is a good strategy for this show as they are changing leads and want people to let ho of the first FL over time. It somehow worked in Yumi's cells.

1

@wapzy
I think it feels similar to me because it sounds like the second season is just run on/continuous, rather than a fully new story like Yumi, and releasing sooner rather than later? I might be wrong though, I'm not caught up on all the information regarding it, that was just my impression.
Also Arthdal was said to be 18 episodes from the beginning and "3 parts" too, but it was the confusion around what those parts meant Vs actual seasons, along with other promotional issues, that threw viewers off.
They still list Arthdal in said 3 parts ln MDL for example, as if they really were 3 mini seasons lol.
Hence my comparison.

2

@sicarius oh you're right. I totally forgot about the 3 parts thing with arthdal. But then again I think it was worth forgetting lol.

1

@wapzy definitely worth forgetting 😂😅

DB does not mention speculations in news bites, but I read in other forums that JSM switched agency recently which might be one reason for not signing up for S2. Another said the director felt the story couldnt be fit into 20 episodes because it was rich with too many characters so S2 will be spinoff of side characters.

I wasn't able to find any other recent articles, but that seems to be the case... Although, I'm still hoping it's wrong :(

I am suddenly reminded of how Do Sang-woo's character in The One and Only just up and flat out disappeared and was completely written out midshow... when he was supposed to be supporting. Would love to know what happened there lmao.

anyway, Love According to Law please, please be watchable. Ideally, be GOOD, but I will take ok, and watchable or average- like the bar is LOW ok, I lowered it so far for you Lee Seung Gi, please... (also SEUL GI! Still a crime you're not getting leads but I'll take it)

Oh, yeah, it was weird. It's like the writer didn't know what doing with his character. But the whole story was weird...

I mean yeah, the writer didn't know what to do with the whole show hahaha I liked the first six episodes though.
But for me is disappearance was like more than just the writer not knowing what to do.

ITA. It wasn't a writing issue, imo. He was a key part of the plot for roughly half the show, and they were clearly setting the groundwork for . . . something with his character, lol. It seemed obvious something happened suddenly behind the scenes, although it's a shame. His character was really interesting.

Yeah it was definitely sus. He had that whole thing where he had history with and knew the shady boyfriend/"villain" and then- poof! Ah the things that show could've been.

I’m confident Love According to the Law (which I think is going by The Law Cafe in English, neither of which is a great title) is going to not be terrible. Good would be ideal but Im trying to keep my expectations in check.

They won't air the next 2 episodes of Alchemy of Souls on the 6th and 7th August. They're taking one week break.

The production of this drama is kinda messy.

They need an extra week to figure out how to move us from Mu Deok to Naksu without fans coming at them with flaming pitchforks.

@bbstl: This is why Yul’s intended ‘taking’ of Mukseon to the fortress is so ominous. As @elinor mentioned in a different thread, IIRC, in episode 8, Yul foreshadowed his willingness to kill ‘monsters’ to protect their world (even if it makes him even more sorrowful given his depth of feelings).

1. Ten bucks say he’s a villain - or at least a piece of shit. I don’t know how I feel about more characters in an already overstuffed setting. The production behind Alchemy of Souls is a mess; the unceremonious firing of Park Hae-eun; the leak of Jung So-min’s departure. If there is going to be a shocking/sad finale plot twist of Naksu returning to her original body, then it should’ve stayed firmly behind wraps. This is beyond incompetent.

2. Yes to more Shin Jae-ha! I’m so glad his career didn’t lose momentum post-enlistment. Anybody who was in My Unfamiliar Family deserves a long and successful career.

3. Sorry, but I DO NOT buy pretty boy Cha Eun-woo as a serious, working lawyer. I feel like I would burst out laughing if the drama tries to present him as some geeenius law prodigy (what else would a ML be??). I do like forbidden texts though, that might be fun.

4. Next week? Man, that’s a lot of dramas to follow concurrently.

5. Love Lee Je-hoon and this sounds interesting. I just hope this project isn’t overly self-indulgent as some actor documentaries tend to be.

6. Has the vibe of something I’d enjoy binging with a group of friends and immediately forget about.

7. That is the EXACT same reaction I’d have to Kim Seul-gi in front of me in a wedding dress (I would go comatose if she were my fiancée). You deserve every female lead role in the world, my queen ❤️. Every single one.
Also I definitely buy Lee Seung-gi as a pretty boy lawyer more than Cha Eun-woo. Oh god why did the premiere date have to be delayed??
