[Drama chat] Your fastest drama binge

With such a fast-paced and non-stop airing schedule, it’s often hard to go back and watch dramas you missed — whether they’re from last month, last year, or a decade ago. Even so, there’s nothing quite like having an entire drama right at your fingertips. You can cancel your plans and watch it straight through, or you know, sleep two hours when you should be sleeping eight. All’s fair in dramaland.

My fastest binge to date is probably Happiness, which I finished in maybe 4 or 5 days? But, it’s only 12 episodes, and I was sick, so that’s my excuse. Definitely had nothing to do with the well-plotted story or the dreamiest hero I’ve seen in a while. Nope.

What’s your fastest drama binge to date? What did you watch, and how long (or, uh, not long) did it take?

Let the chatting begin!

I have three fastest, and they all star Kim Sun-a: 𝗠𝘆 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗼𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗗𝗼, 𝗜 𝗗𝗼. I’m not a particularly huge KSA fan, it just turned out that way. Where I live, summers are miserably hot. Like now. Unless you’re somewhere near a body of water, most people stay inside in the heat of the day. That’s when I binge. I start on Saturday and usually finish on Tuesday.

I used to be an adept k-drama-binger (at least some 4-5 years ago). I usually binge-watched a 16 eps drama in less than a week. Especially when it's easy-to-digest romcom, or hard-to-put-down suspenseful thriller. 4 days would be more than enough to finish those kind of dramas.

So, the official answer to that question is: most of old school romcoms and OCN's gritty crime-thrillers.

Nowadays, though, I found myself "binge-ing" drama in a much, much slower pace than I would spend watching it live. My current binge-watch, C-drama Sword Snow Stride, has been ongoing for 6 months with no quick finish line in sight. I'm almost resigned to it. 🤷‍♀️

When I first started watching k-dramas, I finished dozens of 16-episode dramas in 1-2 days each. I'd watch one and if I liked it, I'd look up other dramas of the actors and watch those. Rinse, repeat 😬.

My very first BOF. It took me 2 full days and 2 half days to complete it, making it roundabout 3 days for 25 episodes. The break came because I inevitably got sick. This was my first time watching a series, let alone binge watching it and I just could not stop because BOF was so addictive. But I vowed to never be that careless again, or so I thought lol. I have never binge watched anything that way again. I usually live watch and if the show is already complete I will maximum watch 2, 3 episodes in a day. I remember breaking that rule for Kill Me heal Me where I watched 8 episodes in a day. Recently I binge watched Legally Romance and it was quite addictive and fun, but never crossed 4 episodes of 40 minutes each in a day. I genuinely feel sick and bad whenever I binge watch, as if I'm wasting my time that should be spent on more productive things. But honestly I don't have anything other to do anyway. So I only binge watch a show when I was late to the party and if I really want to watch it, otherwise if I missed it live there is a hard chance I'll check it again. Also whenever binge watching I try to not watch beyond 2 episodes in a day, cdramas can go upto 4 or 5.

BoF was my second drama ever and I watched it in...I want to say 2 days and 2 hours. With a 10 hour break to go to work, work, and go home again. That Tuesday delightful gal A introduced me to coffee prince and I watched 3 eps that night, 4 the next and 4 the next and finished the rest that night at work. And that night I watched the first ep and a half of BoF. Even though I got off work at 4, made it home around 4:45 and had to be at work at 8:30 I finished the ep. Came home from work, took a power nap and didn't move from my chair until I had to go to work where I watched the last episode. I still remember all of my student workers laughing at me. The final episode is SO DRAMATIC! At one point I threw a computer and straight snatched a checklist from a student worker and said I was doing their job. Came back. Sat down and BURST into tears. At that point I was the evenings entertainment as everyone turned around in the chairs to watch me watch the last bit of the last episode as I kept yelling at everyone that the lunch box TASTES DIFFERENT.
It was then I knew I had a kdrama problem.

I am not a binger. It can take me over a month to watch a drama, even a drama I really like, especially when I’m also jugging currently-airing shows.

But I have a very specific instance where the weekend before an organic chemistry exam, my least favorite class in the history of the world that made me feel like an idiot and gave me ridiculous amounts of stress, I started watching Shut Up: Flower Boy Band. I finished all 16 episodes within 24 hours, only stopping to sleep, basically.

A large part of that anomaly was definitely me wishing to completely ignore reality and the fact that I really should be studying for my exam or else I will definitely fail, but I’m sure another part of it was just that teenage rocker angst. It’s addictive.

To date it is the only drama I’ve finished in a day.

The only time I finished a standard 16-episode K-drama within a day was when I binged-watched Forest of Secrets Season 1. At 11pm on a Friday, I decided I'd take a look at ep1 of a show that I'd heard so much about. At 6am I was still glued to my laptop.

I think it was Yumi’s cells and it was finished over a weekend but as I binge watch most of my dramas it’s hard to remember if there was one I did before that quicker. Some like Hospital playlist I wanted to eek out so only watched a couple of episodes at a time. I wake up at stupid o’clock most days so I can easily watch 2-3 episodes and still have plenty of time before work especially if I am working from home.

I finished "Someday or One Day" is three days, which is a record for me. I try to limit my episode consumption to just two per day because I find that if I go over that, I'm not truly enjoying everything the drama has to offer even if I really love it. But with "Someday or One Day," before I knew it I had watched five episodes over the course of one day, and had to keep going at that pace because I simply needed to know how everything would turn out. I also had successfully avoided spoilers but was afraid my willpower to do so would wane, so that fueled the binge as well.

I was a serial binge watcher until I started live-watching last year. I would watch 16 episodes drama in 1 day (average 1- 2 days) because what's sleep when you have a Kdrama 😂😂😂.

Now that I watch upto 7 live dramas it can take me 1-2 weeks to binge a drama except on weekends where I can still binge in a day or 2

Netflix originals indeed are made for bingeing. Just binged Stranger Things 4 Vol 1 yesterday, for example (7 episodes straight!). For Kdramas - my fastest watch would be the first 4 from your list too - Sweet Home, Move to Heaven, D.P, and Squid Game. The rest though , it took me sometime to finish (and I never went beyond Ep 1 of The Silent Sea).

Not necessarily my fastest, but certainly my most memorable binge: You Who Came from the Stars.

I binged the entire the weekend before I was supposed to take the national ethics exam to practice law. I had already taken ethics, so I really just needed to review what was being tested, but I literally had forgotten I signed up to take the exam until two weeks before it was administered. I had not touched the materials for the exam and planned to study them over the weekend since the exam was eight days away.

Enter Kim Soo-hyun. I didn't touch the books until Sunday night, and that was mostly to print out the outlines. I ended up watching the lectures on double speed (a blessing in disguise because the lecturer was incredibly obnoxious). I remember sitting in my car after the exam and thinking that even if I needed to retake it, I did not regret my actions. Somehow, I passed with flying colors.

I'm not saying to follow my example, but sometimes I think our brains need that kind of rest before something big. There are worse things you could do than watch an alien fall in love with the absolutely fabulous Cheon Song-yi, who remains one of my favorite drama characters to this day. I like to think I walked into that exam channeling a little bit of her attitude.

For me that would be either GOBLIN, THE GREAT AND LONELY GOD or perhaps MARRIAGE NOT DATING. Of course, whether or not I can binge watching anything is in part a function of my work and whether or not my wife is also interested in the same show (she binges with me then). And I watch many currently airing shows so obviously that would be the opposite of binge-watching.

My fastest was a Chinese drama over a weekend, Qing Luo. This drama is so satisfying and I believe a testament of good storytelling. An FL and ML who are competent, very little noble idiocy, fast-paced story (it helps that it's not 50 freaking episodes long!), and the couple doesn't get boring after actually coupling.
I wish all dramas could be formatted this way!

Fastest... I guess anything that was 10 episodes in a day?
Let me see if I have any specific details in my Master Watched List...

Circle- day and a half, depending on how you measure a day.
Okay that's the fastest (by rate of episodes) I have on record- I think I started it the evening before and then binged the rest of the show the entire next day.
So like what, max 11 episodes in a waking day? Yeah.

I used to binge dramas a lot more the first year and a half after getting into them- as I primarily watched dramas that had already aired. I don't remember at what rate this happened.

Now, I have eased off on the bingeing a lot more- as I find it difficult to watch much more than 3 episodes of the same thing in a day, and probably 5 in total, and my brain gets over stimulated, (cue: headaches and dreaming in Korean when you do not Speak Korean...)

I still have faster bingeing pockets; I have often binged the back half of a show, 6 or 7 episodes in one sitting (Squid Game, Squad 38, various cdramas) for example, but it's much more common for me to binge a show say, in a week, rather than a few days, and I'm much more likely to watch multiple different things a day to spread everything out.
.
.
.
On the other end of the spectrum, it took me almost exactly a year and 2 months to finish Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, and a year and 5 months to finish Suspicious Partner, both watched in two halves, lmao.

I binge like crazy, tbh. Always.

Some particular events I remember:
In 2017 I watched "What's Wrong With My Family?" in 2 days. That show has 53 episodes LOL. It was crazy.

My brother and I watched "Sweet Home" in one night. And then we watched half of "It's Okay Not To Be Okay". I was tired as hell but I couldn't sleep, it was fun and awful.

My most recent bingewatch is the american drama "Severance". It was last week. Those 9h were worth it, I liked it.

It’s crazy, I know, but with an unseasonably cold weekend on my hands, I just finished 16 eps of I’m Sorry I Love You. So Jib Sub looking youthful scruffy hot and all. But the makjang - one really has to be in the mood to take it all in this drama. I’ve never seen people work so hard at being misunderstood. Yet, with hail pelting my window in June, I’m in awe of how ISILY sucks me in like no other Korean drama for a full-blown tear fest of emotional chaos.

My drama watching is completely dependent of my mood so mostly I watch an episode a week of several dramas or watch a single drama to the exclusion of all other. Two such dramas were Sassy Go Go, which I watched over two days with a minimum of sleep and Scripting Your Destiny, which is so short I fit it in during a single evening/night.

it was my favorite sageuk UNTIL... yes, until park shi hoo fell from grace by making a very dumb decision (his scandal).

i've not binged any other drama since then. it was a fun ride, tho...

I was just sitting there for two afternoons, happy and sobbing and not pushing the button that would stop the next one from playing. And I love LJH so much.

I live in a decently cold-climate area, so over the winter (I've known about/been into dramas for less than a year at this point) I was watching pretty quickly. Maybe a little over a week for a normal 16 episodes? But I blasted through IOTNBO super fast (I want to say it was more like 4 days?) because I was leaving for a trip and wanted to finish it before I left!

For my wife and I, bingeing is a way of life, usually starting when I get off work in the late afternooon--although along with that goes the habit of dropping dramas midway in when I can't stand the inevitable weak episodes. I should be more patient in all respects!

But what I always, always, end up bingeing are chinese rom-coms. I like them fine, but as I get started on them and suddenly realize, at about 6 episodes in, that I still have 24-26 episodes to go, I panic, and start ploughing through them with liberal use of the fast forward button.

My record, though, was for what I think was a fairly well-known one, Love 020. It had some of the worst examples of the Chinese t.v. style of over the top acting I've ever seen. Yang Yang was supposed to be the ultimate heart throb, and therefore posed stiffly looking manly in a hilarious way in every scene. Meanwhile poor Zheng Shuang (who I understand is now blacklisted because of a bizarre surrogacy scandal) widened her eyes in abject terror every time Yang Yang touched her.

I got through 30 episodes of that in about 9 hours on a rainy Sunday. My wife dropped out at the 4 hour mark, swearing never to watch chinese rom-coms with me again.

You could just check out a few episodes to see what I mean. There's a lot of video game dress up, so that takes a little while to get through, though.

The manly pose is something I have great personal experience with--standing with shoulders set, so they look broader then they actually are, crossing the arms to exude toughness, but also to show off the biceps, and if you are shirtless, thrusting the hips a little forward to display your toned abdominals. Not saying that I ever actually stood these ways myself, of course--Never!--I've just observed it.

The problem is, Yang Yang tends to treat her so condescendingly that you want to punch him, speaking of a stereotypically manly reaction.

Um, all of them? 😂

Unless the drama is currently airing (and I'm live watching it), I binge watch everything. I complete most dramas in two days, but the longer ones can take up to four. If it takes me a week, then I'm super busy in real life or I find the drama boring, haha.

I binge watch 2-3 dramas simultaneously so I can switch between them and not get burned out on one story.

These two I have started a saturday and finished the day after. Why these 2 overcame my selfcontrol, I do not know since I prefer to take some time to digest the plot and pictures.
