Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 16-22, 2022

While it’s gratifying to see some dramas finally pulling in more viewers (Red Heart and My Liberation Notes), Tomorrow and The Killer’s Shopping List end without much fanfare at all. All in all, the ratings continue to feel topsy turvy, with truly deserving dramas not getting much attention, and other dramas stealing it all away.

1.1 more like T_T 😭

Sad about ratings but giving up at this point - Disney+ is to blame for the lower overall viewership numbers too I'm sure but I'm glad there's still a considerable troop of us loving this show with everything we've got!!

It may not seem like it but for a weekender IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW is actually struggling in terms of ratings.

OUR BLUES is getting the love it deserves.

While it is not doing badly, I would have thought that WOORI THE VIRGIN would do a little bit better.

Yeah, by this point weekenders are usually pulling high 20's and have hit 30 percent. I like It's Beautiful Now more than the last couple of weekenders, but I can kind of see why it's struggling. The younger cast lacks the spark of someone like Lee Se-hee from Young Lady and Gentleman or Lee Sang-yi from Once Again.

Extraordinary care was taken in casting the titular Young Lady in YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN. Lee Se-hee was one of five hundred actresses who auditioned for the role. It is obvious that the casting people got it right because she was positively luminous as our Young Lady.

While I really like all three of our future sisters-in-law they do not have that same spark, just as you said.

Perhaps ppl are exhausted from all the crises of Young Lady and Gentleman! Loved the drama, but too many insane roadblocks for the OTP.

Agreed- the second amnesia was definitely at least one too many- but the show kept on getting high ratings. So apparently the home audience likes it that way.

IBN deserves so much better.
I think the problem is that no one is dying, have amnesia or go around slapping people. Our characters are too nice and healthy.

I think we're getting higher ratings when the birth secret comes out.

I agree- up to now what we mostly had had is a sort of three couple romcom but not a lot of real family issues as such. That is about to change and the birth secret will be a part of that.

There are articles about Yoon Shi Yoon's hair was constantly changing in the drama. In one scene, his hair was short and in another, it was a longer hairstyle with completely different look. Lack of continuity and i feel dumbfounded to see it in a drama headlining KBS weekend.

His hair has been very distracting for me. The different lengths between scene cuts was very sloppy work.

I was thinking about starting it. I have zero experience in watching a weekender. Tried watching Young Lady and a Gentleman (I like the ML) but gave up after the amnesia track. So do you think I should give this a try?

Yours cautiously optimistic!

A weekender is a different experience from shorter K-dramas. What you would find is that there may be parts of an episode which seem like filler (and may be) so the FF button is sometimes of some use. The greatest weekenders keep things moving along at a steady pace: ONCE AGAIN and MY FATHER IS STRANGE did this, and for the most part so did the popular YOUNG LADY AND GENLEMAN despite its other flaws- too much dependence on Amnesia being the primary one which ultimately distorted the story. I certainly understand where you are coming from. The popularity of the show in the ROK can really be explained not by the story but by the fabulous performances of the ML (who got a Daesang for it) and the FL (Best New Actress for her).

I would try it and see- but if weekenders are not to your taste then that is simply something you have learned. One of the differences with IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW is how relatively normal the characters are. So far the most charming aspect of the show is our three future sisters-in-law. I am basically in love with all three. I am now warming up to the older two brothers but less charmed by the youngest.

Weekenders are always about family, and so far IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW has been slow to fully engage the families. But that is changing now.

To be honest, I do not know if weekenders are to my taste. Not all of them are makjang. Young Lady and the gentleman was not really a makjang (in spite of the histrionics of a few screaming ahjummas.) The whole age gap part and the children made it really cute.

I think I am going to try it. "One of the differences with IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW is how relatively normal the characters are." This line of yours helped me make up my mind!

Thanks!

I think for those who lasted, TOMORROW will be one of those dramas you either loved or hated with maybe no one in between. I am in the loved it camp. Yes it could have been better.
Due to the subject matter it was never going to be a big ratings draw.
Although the ratings were not great I think it is fortunate to have aired in this era of depressed (if you will) ratings. It could well have suffered a episodes cut not too long ago.

agreed! definitely one of the more polarising ones, and I too fell in the camp of loving it despite its flaws - lowkey also surprised it got the ratings it got considering how divisive it was and also when other more well recieved dramas are doing worse but I'm wondering if the streaming platform plays into that at all

I got the impression people were disapointed because they didn't get that they were expecting. But since the beginning, the drama was very clear about its genre (cleary not a romance).

I feel like I landed somewhere in the middle but that's because there are some episodes/moments that I hated and some that I loved. It was a strange watch in that way.

Suicide as a subject matter for a series is tricky to handle for writers and viewers. I remember when Thirteen Reasons Why first aired and there was a ton of controversy over of how suicide was portrayed and handled and good arguments on both sides.

I enjoeyd it a lot. I liked how it did not try to be western-y or woke + the online fan content was decent too since thankfully the drama was not popular in the west (foreign western fans make everything about 'correctness'). It was a nice conservative and simple drama. Wish they had explored the GRxPJG relationship a bit more.

As for the ratings, the weekend is soo packed with dramas, it's a bit unfair to judge any drama's lack of ratings since some of them, like Tomorrow, can be rewatched on Netflix or other streaming platforms. I hope the next batch of dramas is not all parked on the weekend.

Hyun Jae, Showtime and Stars deserve better. Those shows are so cute and fun.

So happy to see the rising numbers for My Liberation Notes. If there’s any drama in this list that deserves this, it’s this one.

Bloody Heart is also gradually doing better. Hopefully it can maintain the upward momentum. Always good to see quality sageuks doing well.

It’s Beautiful Now deserves better. This is quite low by weekender standards. I guess everything’s too normal and healthy to interest domestic audiences. The lack of breakout stars is not helping either.

Showtime Begins! also deserves better, but I’m not surprised by the low numbers. It’s a mix of several eclectic elements and some people might be confused by that.

3-4% seems about right for Woori the Virgin. The show’s alright, but lacks the Business Proposal-like addictiveness or the overwhelming charm of its source material.

Love All Play is the true underdog of the season. At this point, I just hope the show finds an audience somewhere one day.

Forgot to write about Shooting Star, but I think last week’s long discourse on it was enough words. I think this is a combination of bad air-time (should’ve been a Monday-Tuesday show), lack of star power, and mixed reception. I think it’s a bit more popular internationally, but nowhere near as much as it could’ve been because of its own relentless racism. But still, 1% is low.

Yeah I really enjoy Shooting Stars and agree that it should have been a Monday-Tuesday drama. Sticking it in the crowded weekend slot with dramas that have either strong, plot-driven stories or were written by writers whose names are more known to the public... I can see this drama as something people may pick up and watch after it has finished airing.

I guess that's the good thing about streaming, the dramas can still catch new viewers later on!

I personally thought Tomorrow was a mediocre (at best) drama, so the lower ratings don't surprise me. I'm thrilled MLN and RH are doing well. I *am* surprised that Shooting Stars isn't at around 4%--that seems like a drama that would have a lot of general appeal, and it's so easy to watch.

As always, I feel bad for everyone involved with Love All Play. They're all doing great work but hardly anyone is watching :( Show, I love you!

Tomorrow did pretty well on Netflix in Korea. Since the weekend is so packed with dramas, I'm pretty sure people leave dramas like this to stream later if they're available on such platforms.

I’m actually enjoying Shooting Stars. Too bad the ratings are low. It hasn’t recovered from the faux pas of the initial episode.

Sh**ting Stars has its issues, but apart from those I thoroughly enjoy it. I’m now at ep6 I think, and it’s doing the thing for me. So addicting and easy to watch. That is why I’m surprised it doesn’t get higher ratings. It’s a bit sad because it’s such a fun and light rom-com I thought it would be somewhat a hit.

Yes, that’s my only reason to watch dramas. I don’t know why there seem to be fewer dramas of this type these days: I never understand why we need more sad, melo, violent dramas than the more happy and light ones. I know some like it (well, I like some of these, too), but I would wish we had more uplifting, bright dramas than this.

It's my fave these days. Has the vibes and 'tropes' of older kdramas that western fans hate lol. I like how it doesn't seem to be that popular amongst the western fans as most of the content i see is from asian fans. Reminds me of older kdrama days when every drama wasn't trying so hard to be cool or whatever lol.

I think it’s cool because it doesn’t try so hard! It has all the elements that I love in Kdramas. It is a fun right after all. I don’t wanna say this (out loud) but to me this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than The Sound of Music which I didn’t even know what was the message of the drama (not including all the issues that the drama failed to deal with properly, and accurately in some cases).

I'm not watching this show but your comment, "Reminds me of older kdrama days when every drama wasn't trying so hard to be cool..." also reminds me of those writers who insist on casting big stars thinking their names will be cool for the production and cover for the flaws in the writing of their story and their characters. Kim Eun Sook is one such writer that comes to mind. Recently, there is also Kwon Do Eun.

Coincidentally, the latter used to be the former's assistant screenwriter. And not surprisingly, using the same tactics in her most recent drama with Kim Tae Ri and Nam Joo Hyuk. In this case, the writer must be thinking that huge Star power or acting prowess can make the drama look "cool" and cover for the creepiness with which the FL character behaved and acted after she got married. I have never seen a married FL giving such tribute to her first love in this creepy way. This headstrong female lead opened up questionable moral backbone due to details in FL's characterization. Without fine tuning such details, the writer ended up degrading the main Female Lead character, making her look stupid and insensitive and also at the same time mocking the viewers. It's still shocking to me that there are some viewers who are blinded and ignoring such details because of the actress playing behind the character and the drama being lauded as one based on "realism".

I did not watch that drama because it gave me the vibes of a try-hard show that was trying to be all deep and woke and whatever. Anything that gets popular amongst western fans is something I tend to avoid coz I never end up liking it. Plus when I heard it had a......spoiler ahead i guess.........sad ending, I was definitely not going to watch it. Very often, in Asian and Western dramas both, the "headstrong" female character is always terrible done. Writers think they can write the characters like woke twitter and tumblr posts and make a modern character but it always ends up being an annoying stupid character. I don't care if FLs are degraded just coz of their gender. If a character is stupid, it is stupid.

I'm a bit bummed about the low ratings for From Now, Showtime! It's not perfect but it's lighthearted fun that I look forward to it each week. I hope they don't forget about our ghost crew while they delve into the backstory of our leads.
